Jacob Parrish Draws Special Commendation
August 2nd, 2025
Bucs rookie cornerback Jacob Parrish.
So what’s the highest praise Todd Bowles could drop on a young defensive back?
He might have done it today.
Bowles threw rookie second-round pick Benjamin Morrison some love Friday on NFL Network, noting how he’s special the way he reads and covers receivers at the top of their routes. He also had good things to say there about fellow rookies Emeka Egbuka (Round 1) and cornerback Jacob Parrish (Round 3).
But today Bowles seemed almost in awe of Parrish for how sharp he’s been so early in his career.
“It’s hard to say he’s grown because he’s been good since the first day he’s gotten here,” Bowles said of Parrish after practice. “You know, we correct him very little, and that’s a scary thing, especially for me. We don’t say his name much because he’s always doing the right thing.
“His preparation and toughness and ready-to-play, you tell him something one time and he’s got it. He loves to compete. He goes outside. He goes inside. He plays special teams. He’s a joy to be around.”
Joe is fired up. Bucs officials gush and gush and gush about Egbuka, Morrison and Parrish. If just one of those guys is as special as management thinks, just one, the Bucs will be a significantly better team this season.
If two are true rookie ballers, Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manger Jason Licht might need another raise.

Love it. Obviously, dude must have an IQ > 180 to go along with all the athletic attributes. Way to go Jason.

Trade Dean before he hurts himself. Not a question of if with him, it’s a question of when. Miami lost a starting corner, and so did another AFC team. getting a second round pick for a guy they won’t resign would be pretty sweet.

It seems like most of the Bucs Corners are having a great Camp
I hope it carry over to the regular season

We seem to need a full stable of secondary with TB as HC/DC, because it hasn’t proven to be a real hardy group over his tenure. Which seems consistent when you’re relying on guys <200 lbs as your main rushing/sack attack. I'd be curious to know the last DB/S to play a full season. The more the merrier; the deeper the better

Or just cut Dean and save the 13 mil and invest in another edge. Edge will be the group that determines how far Bucs go this season.

Sounds good.
I wonder – what would the Dolphins give us in a trade for J. Dean?
2nd round pick?
We got a 3rd round pick for C. Davis and the Phins have already lost 2 DBs for the season…
August 2nd, 2025 at 2:23 pm
Dean would make a great safety in 3 rd and long , Oh Ya , my bad , he can’t catch !!
Never Mind !!
August 2nd, 2025 at 3:20 pm
We would be very lucky to get a 4th round pick for Dean, definitely not a 2nd

@ Enkd
It’s a seller’s market.
Supply and demand…
Ever take an economics course?
LOL.
We got a 3rd round pick for C. Davis and J. Dean is the better of the two.

Parrish and Morrison on outside, Zyon at nickle might be best. The two rookies might be best in man to man already, sounds like. Zyon likes to hit and has good size so maybe better against the run, and better matchup on tight ends or big slots, which seems to be the trend.

Dean is still here?

Beginning to think that a lot of JBFers don’t appreciate Jamel Dean & what he brings to the Bucs. Just a hunch, just a feeling, but nonetheless.
For kicks went back into the 2019 NFL draft looking JUST at CBs, and specifically those 10 CBs who were drafted BEFORE Jamel was drafted in the 3rd round.
1 – Deandre Baker (Giants): 3 yrs – 26 games – 0 INT – 10 PD – 1226 def snaps (out of football after 2021 season)
2 – Byron Murphy (Cards): 6 yrs – 87 games – 14 INT – 61 PD – 5428 def snaps (6 of his INTs came last year with Vikings)
3 – Rock Ya-Sin (Colts): 6 yrs – 79 games – 2 INT – 31 PD – 2998 def snaps (part-timer with 49ers last year)
4 – Sean Murphy-Bunting (Bucs): 6 yrs – 82 games – 11 INT – 34 PD – 4027 def snaps (with Cards last year)
5 – Trayvon Mullen (Raiders): 4 yrs – 46 games – 4 INT – 29 PD -1995 def snaps (out of football after 2022 season)
6 – Joejuan Williams (Pats): 4 yrs – 42 games – 0 INT – 10 PD – 561 def snaps (out of football after 2023 season)
7 – Greedy Williams (Browns): 3 yrs – 39 games – 2 INT – 12 PD – 1375 def snaps (out of football after 2022 season)
8 – Lonnie Johnson (Texans): 6 yrs – 83 games – 4 INT – 15 PD – 2073 def snaps (with Panthers last year)
9 – David Long (Rams): 6 yrs – 79 games – 1 INT – 8 PD – 1228 def snaps (with Colts last year)
10 – Justin Lane (Steelers): 4 yrs – 52 games – 0 INT – 1 PD – 156 def snaps (out of football after 2022 season)
11 – Jamel Dean (Bucs): 6 yrs – 82 games – 8 INT – 52 PD – 4057 def snaps
o The ONLY ONE of the top 11 CB picks in the 2019 draft still with the same team. And oh ya, 5 of those 10 drafted before Jamel are now out of football.
o Dean’s 82 games rank him 3rd behind Byron Murphy (87 games) & Lonnie Johnson (83 games)
o Jamel’s 8 INTs rank him 3rd behind Byron Murphy (14 INTs) & SMB (11 INTs).
o Dean’s 52 PDs rank him 2nd to Byron Murphy (61 PDs)
o Jamel’s 4057 def snaps rank him 2nd to Byron Murphy (5428 def snaps).
And just for the record, Byron Murphy has a 3-year contract with the Vikings for $54 mil ($18 mil average per year). Jamel Dean has a 4-year contract with the Bucs for $52 mil ($13 mil average per year). And oh ya, Byron Murphy was the 33rd pick taken in the 2019 draft (the 2nd CB), while Jamel Dean was the 94th pick (the 11th CB).
Personally I’d say that the Bucs have gotten more than their money’s worth in drafting Jamel Dean back 6 years ago.
August 2nd, 2025 at 4:31 pm
He only dropped 2 rounds because of 2 inches.
We finally have our Ronde Barber 2.0.
LVD was a God-send after Derrick Brooks.
We finally have our spiritual replacement for Ronde Barber: The 5-9 Ironman.
August 2nd, 2025 at 4:40 pm
Defense Rules,
That was a weak draft for Corners
August 2nd, 2025 at 4:42 pm
@ DR
I appreciate J. Dean and would be fine keeping him.
But we seem to have a plethora of quality DBs at the moment.
However, this might change as we move through the preseason.
If we can’t get a 2nd round pick for JD I would pass.
But it if I were the GM it would be hard to pass up the opportunity to score a top 50 pick in 2026 for the oft injured Dean.
August 2nd, 2025 at 5:13 pm
Marine Buc … ‘But we seem to have a plethora of quality DBs at the moment.’
Yes … QUALITY DBs. And that’s exactly why I wouldn’t trade any of them. If one of them goes down, we’ve got someone just as good waiting to take his place.
Last year I’m convinced that Jamel Dean played hurt much of the time, because the guy waiting to take his place wasn’t as good as an ‘80% Dean’. This year? Ain’t gonna happen. After what happened last year, I’ll bet you that Bowles won’t hesitate to put CB#2 into the starting rotation if CB#1 is not 100%. Matter of fact, I’ll bet that ALL of our CBs get a hefty number of defensive snaps this year. Rookies in particular need a baptism by fire; you can’t learn by sitting on the bench.
August 2nd, 2025 at 6:52 pm
DR nails it. The rookies are undemonstrated in live action. Dean has shown when on the field, he can play. After the last two seasons, exaggerate DB depth as much as possible. For sure.
Dean’s not going anywhere, pilgrims.

Ok Defense Rules–your comment was the best, lol, we need more of that kind of commentary on here. Excellent analysis using stats not just feelings.
August 2nd, 2025 at 9:23 pm
That’s interesting DR….
Looks like in 2019 – There were only 3 out of 11 CBs drafted on day 1 and 2 that amounted to much of anything….
…and the Bucs drafted 2 of the 3… in the middle 2nd and late 3rd rounds.
Crappy CB draft – yet Licht pulled 2 semi-gems out of the coal mine….
Bowles has been consistent with his more-than-normal praise of Parrish ever since he got here – and if you’ll notice – every time he talks about Parrish, Todd mentions that he plays well outside…..
If Morrison turns out to be as good as I think he will – Bucs just solved their “CB problem” in 1 draft – again with late 2nd and 3rd round picks….
August 2nd, 2025 at 9:25 pm
Another great comment Defense Rules!
August 2nd, 2025 at 9:30 pm
Rotate Parrish and Zyan in the slot based on size of the receiver. Both have great speed. Zyan is much bigger. Get Morrison in when Zyan moves inside. I can’t remember when we’ve had better talent at DB overall.
Go Bucs!!!
August 2nd, 2025 at 9:46 pm
Oh Man, We are going to have some aggressive man to man old fashioned bump and run defense going on! The more the merrier! Don’t dare trade any of these talented dudes! McCollum, Izien, Tykee, Antoine, Bryce Hall, and Dean and now Parrish and Morrison! Now that’s what I’m talking about! Please give me a call if you’re having trouble coaching these guys. I’d be happy to help out with that!
August 2nd, 2025 at 10:50 pm
Well done DR – thanks!
Bucs certainly got good value from Dean and he is good at times. Just seems to play soft off coverage too much imo and is routinely hurt, to the point of counting on it. If he plays man to man or at least tight coverage, he’s solid. Never understood playing 10 yards off to where he’s barely on the tv screen. Is that his call or Bowles? Either way – that crap needs to end.
August 2nd, 2025 at 10:52 pm
I don’t think many fans realize just how well the Bucs have drafted overall the last 5 years. People get so caught up in the fact that they didn’t pick a player they had their heart set on or the position they expected. I have noticed that all of the teams are drafting better but the Bucs have had exceptional drafts lately. Gone are the days of the raiders picking some day 3 guy in the 1st round just because he runs a 4.2. A guy like Keith McCants wouldn’t even be on Jason’s draft board nowadays.
August 2nd, 2025 at 10:57 pm
Last year was an eye opener for DB injuries and a lesson in not wanting to be caught with the trousers down syndrome, but someone also wrote about having quality back ups which is certainly needed, any warm body won’t do. And that goes for every position, we just got hammered there last year, every week a replacement was going down. To that end I was thinking back on the draft and comparing how it played out to what Joe is reporting from camp. A lot of people didn’t understand or like the first pick, I didn’t understand it either, but I made the mistake of listening to too many talking heads and not thinking, and/or not maybe trusting the brain trust that is the HC and GM & staff. Look at the way it’s played out:
CG unknown timetable but able to withstand that because of 1st pick EE.
CB needs: see 2nd and 3rd pick plus udfa’s
Line play and edge rusher: Reddick as advertised and then some, Walker injury bummer, Braswell looking good so far, Yaya balling? and others yet to be seen. Kancey staying healthy so far.
Looking back, if things play out as well as they seem to so far going forward, a lot of folks will have to start acknowledging this team and it’s staff as one of the best run, smartest, forward thinking teams in all of sports.

Kenton Smith – they need you!
