Baker Mayfield Flexes Arm Strength

June 18th, 2025

There were a couple of high-profile “Hail Mary” completions in the NFL last season.

One came from the master of that pass himself, Aaron Rodgers, and the other was from rookie phenom Jayden Daniels.

The Rodgers throw just before halftime of a Jets-Bills game traveled 63 yards in the air. The Daniels’ play rocked the NFL world for days — 65 yards in the air and a game-winning touchdown to beat the Bears after a deflection.

So what kind of arm does Baker Mayfield have when it comes to these kinds of throws?

This came to Joe’s mind seeing the official Buccaneers video of Mayfield hanging out with kids at a youth camp.

(For those enticed by the Slide home insurance ad on that page, Joe will refer you to Moore Resources Insurance, a stellar local company owned and operated for decades by former Bucs tight end Dave Moore. Hey Bucs, it sure would be cool for the team to promote legit businesses owned by ex-players.)

In that video, Mayfield is egged on by kids to see how far he can throw a football. The Pro Bowl quarterback gives in and throws a 70-yard rope down the middle of the turf inside the Glazer Shed.

With the Browns, Mayfield uncorked a last-second touchdown bomb about 64 yards in the air. There’s also video of him throwing a 70-plus yarder outside the back of the end zone during his Cleveland days.

Joe’s mostly typing this up hoping the video gets to Todd Bowles’ desk. It could serve as a great reminder that every late-game Detroit second matters.

He had an absurdly long try last year that went out the back of the end zone and was uncatchable

  2. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I don’t think there’s any question that Baker has a really live arm; probably top 10 in the league.

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Raises the question: who probably has the strongest arm in the league? Maybe Richardson but he would miss everything. Who else is in the conversation?

  4. Aqualung Says:

    Results matter. Coaching matters.

Just rewatched the Eagles/Bucs 2002 Championship Game on YouTube. Man Ronde was all over the field that day. Plan to rewatch the Super Bowl too. It’s on YouTube too.

There was an article about quarterbacks throwing at the combine. Josh Allen threw it 62mph. Baker Mayfield was 61mph. Lamar Jackson 49mph. Josh Allen has the record at 62mph. Mahomes threw 55, Brady 61, Deshaun Watson 45. Just interesting

  7. Truth be Told Says:

Yes, Game Management and That Putrid Pass Defense are areas this team can improve upon. Kinda nice having a Franchise QB (long term) for the first time in Franchise history huh Buc fans? Later former Baker Haters. Let’s Bake. Go Bucs!!

Dont throw your shoulder out please. SB this year.

Dew, I do the same thing every couple of years

Very interesting. I mean I like to see comparisons of Baker with other QBs, current and past. I see him as our franchise guy also.

    Go Bucs!!

Mayfield holds the NFL record for longest pass in the air.
    That answer any doubters?

  12. August 1976 Buc Says:

Feb 10, 2025 — The record for longest NFL pass is currently owned by Baker Mayfield, who an astounding 70.5 yard hail mary against the Baltimore Ravens in 2020.

    Alvin Scissors Harper,

You must be on crack like your ex-teammate Michael Irvin. Baker’s arm is no less than Top-3 in the league.

Good one! And couldn’t agree more!

I remember when the Bucs drafted QB Doug Williams. John McKay was asked why he selected him. McKay said, “Because he can throw the ball 70+ yards”.The reporter said, “There are a lot of QB’s who can do that.” To which McKay replied, “Yes, but not 3 feet off the ground.” One of the first passes Dougie threw was a bomb to speedster Isaac Hagins that was slightly over thrown. The crowd cheered wildly. Not much to cheer about in those days.

    Scubog—

Remember that well as a diehard boy fan. It was a preseason game, and Doug’s first appearance. With the likes of Gary Huff, an aging Steve Spurrier, Parnell Dickenson, et al proceeding him, it was truly amazing to see the Bucs finally have a QB who could throw the ball over 20 yards!
Hyperbole? Perhaps, but it was a good feeling nonetheless.
Too bad the parsimonious Culverhouse let Doug walk a few years later. I could write a few more deleterious adjectives describing Culverhouse, but they would not be permitted here.

I will settle for precise throws to dudes in Pewter and Red please.

Bombs (am I dating myself) are great but would much rather not need them. Arm stength is imortant when you need to zip one between LBs and corners in a tough spot, or when CG is open across the middle.

    Go Bucs!

  18. Marky mark Says:

But he has to be healthy. Baker is a full body thrower. Even his non throwing shoulder effects his accuracy and distance.

  19. J Says:

Williams used to come out before Bucs games and throw from end zone to end zone. The only other arm I’ve ever known to be as strong were Marino and Culpepper.

Being a loyal Bucs fan since the beginning, I just don’t watch other teams play. I have researched longest completed pass in the NFL, but only found incomplete passes. Throwing the longest pass gets a pat on the back. But it really needs to be a completed pass IMO. Unfortunately, I could not find a consensus among my internet only search, with Baker in a Browns jersey hitting the goal post, with no named receiver, no score noted. Can anyone find that answer for me? Who has thrown the longest completed pass in NFL history, and who was the receiver, and what team were they on? Got a correct answer anyone? Love to all Bucs qbs, but M1k3 is the is the all around best. Sorry Rhonde.

No one can throw a football 100 yards. I’m sorry but that is just ridiculous
