Baker Mayfield No. 9 In Annual QB Ranking

June 9th, 2025

Baker Mayfield is movin’ on up.

A second consecutive standout season has Mayfield landing at No. 9 overall in the annual detailed quarterback breakdown delivered by ex-Bucs QB Chris Simms.

Last summer, Mayfield took the No. 15 spot.

Super Bowl QB Jalen Hurts? He checked in at No. 10 behind Mayfield. Ahead of the 30-year-old Bucs signal caller is Chargers QB Justin Herbert at No. 8, whose accomplishments fall short of Mayfield’s.

“Pocket passer with a rocket arm,” Simms said of Mayfield, noting he makes a high percentage of highlight throws, sees the field great and makes the difficult throws with ease.

Simms added that Mayfield adjusts his arm angles and his lone negative is sometimes forcing throws he shouldn’t.

“All in all, one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the game right now,” Simms said, adding that Mayfield’s confidence, attitude and leadership are elite.

Joe will add that Mayfield having by far a career year running the ball last season makes him even more deserving of top-10 quarterback status. Overall, Joe thinks Simms’ No. 9 ranking is appropriate.

  1. Bucs4Ever Says:

I think that is pretty fair, TBH. Too many picks. I bet he’d be higher if he got those into the single digits. Let’s Bake!

  2. Buc1987 Says:

Keep that chip on your shoulder Baker…

  3. gofortheface30 Says:

Bucs4Ever – agreed, although I would say a 41:16 ratio is pretty elite. But yes, be that as it may – you’d like that 16 to be 8-10. Especially in today’s game where receivers and quarterbacks are given every advantage, along with play design being less downfield and risk averse. If he does that, and has a similar yr as last yr then give that man 300 million

  4. JimBobBuc Says:

Simms’ take seems balanced and fair. Unlike a bunch of media idiots, he’s played the game and actually breaks down tape.

Bake will boost his solid rep when he and the Bucs start winning the big night games.

  5. Fred Says:

    Nah Bake Top 5!

  6. Oneilbuc Says:

Yeah go ahead Baker just put up good stats because that’s all most of the people care about on this site. You don’t have to win nothing to please these fans. You can choke in every big moments but as long as you’re stats are good they will celebrate you!!!

  7. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Bake’s scrambling ability is beyond what I envisioned . Keep the turn overs low and he’ll be around top 5.

  8. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Oh Oneil – go back to bed. Captain downer. Nothing productive, just troll garbage as always.

  9. Stpetematt Says:

Baker has an elite arm. There’s no doubt about that. I think to reach the next level he needs to talk to Tom Brady and gain his “step on your opponent’s throat and never let up” level of competitiveness that Tom has. Also learn more about his enhanced focus early in games and in the fourth quarter. Bucs statistics in the early 1st quarter with Tom were outrageously good. Lots of first possession touchdowns. We need that again! Playing with a lead makes defense a whole lot easier. Let’s get the lead and never let up ALL SEASON!

LFGo Bucs! And O’Neill crawl back into whatever cave you came from and take Bucs off your name. Saints fan or something?

  10. dls5492 Says:

He’s a football player that plays quarterback. Blocking down field in the Giants game was awesome to see. Not many pretty boy quarterbacks would do that.

  11. Oneilbuc Says:

    74. I know I want championships you want good stats I get it!!

  12. ATRAIN Says:

Baker is the All around BEST in NFL right now.

    Makes his passes
    Is smart with ball
    Tough as Heck
    Throws blocks
    LEADS HIS TEAM

NO ONE ELSE IS THIS TOUGH

    #1.

  13. Gipper Says:

Interceptions are something to talk about for fans who lack perspective. How many games did Bucs lose because of Mayfield interceptions in 2025? In fact, Baker and Bucs mauled New Orleans 51-24 in a game where Mayfield had 3 INT’s. I have said it before that even the Brady the Magnificent, in his first 7 complete years threw 14 INT’s 3x. Haven’t heard anyone then or now complain about that. In the Stupidity Department there are those who believe that Brady won those Super Bowls all by himself. He didn’t need an O line or a Belichick defense, or wide receivers, it was Tommy the Goat against 22 on the other side.

  14. Oscar Says:

Oneilbuc, One question for you. Did Brady ever win a Super Bowl with a below average defense. Or any other qb in history for that matter

  15. Oneilbuc Says:

Stepete. You need to put Baker Mayfield next to your name and I will keep bucs next to mine because I want championships you want stats that’s the difference between me and you. I want to dominate the division and the NFL and become the best franchise in the NFL and that’s a dynasty. I don’t care about stats take over the game and will us to a victory in the playoffs when needed that’s what I want from Baker Mayfield as a quarterback. Stats means nothing look at Dak and Justin Herbert and others good stats with no Superbowl. Romo did the same thing and the cowboys wasted Zeke Elliott, Bryan and Jason Witten and also that good offensive line. I don’t want that for my bucs. Just like Alex Smith and the Chiefs were winning 12 and 13 games and then lost in the first or second round in the playoffs. As well as the other quarterbacks I named and they all made the pro bowl.

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

Oscar. When it was Brady time to put the team on his back in big moments he stepped up. That’s what I’m talking about our defense gave up 20 points against Washington and 7 of those points came when Baker fumble the ball.

  17. Davyboy Says:

Ol’ Money Baker, is movin up in the rankings, slowly but surely. What was it Sims said, something about elite wasn’t it?? Yes, I double checked, it was the elite word he used. This will be the year Baker puts all the boys that hate him in their place, the losers column. It is inevitable. The cream always rises to the top 😋 and the team with him. Get ready for one of the best years we have ever had, led by the head coach maker!!!

  18. JustVisiting Says:

Improved pass defense -> less need for offensive heroics > fewer pics. It’s going to be a good year.

  19. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Bake is definitely Top-5. Hands down

  20. Bucswin Says:

I blame el serpentine for putting our players in bad positions. Glad he is gone. Our new oc with fix that right away. Go Bowles!

  21. Davyboy Says:

Onei, I hate to tell you this but a quarterback isn’t a god. He can’t just make things happen just because you want him to. The rest of the team has to be in place for your wishes to actually materialize. In 2023 you people used to point out Bakers stats from 2021 when he was hurt but played through it and say oh look he’s no good but now that he’s playing at this high level, where the stats are actually top 5, the stats don’t matter. I can’t wait to see what you people come up with when we win a superbowl with Baker as our qb. I can hear it now, “yeah but without that smelling salt there is no way he could have won”!!

Bucemup We need to draft a quarterback no more 40 year old quarterback . Stop being played by the owners with bringing in popular players to sale tickets .

Jamies went to a organization waaaaay better than ours and if he gets a chance to start he will be killing us for years to come .

  23. Kenton Smith Says:

Haven’t looked at the 8 QBs in front of him. They don’t matter to him. It’s the 52 players who are with him. I’m sure he doesn’t give a rats a$$ about where he’s ranked. He and the Bucs gonna continue playing with that chip on their shoulder. I’m thinking they’re going to be playing especially “chippy” this year. As talented as we’re becoming combined with that”chip” is going to be flat out hard to beat. Baker, combined with these vets with Super Bowl rings, and this massive trove of young talent, is going to take the NFL by storm this year. Top Ten defense combined with what I’m predicting might be the most productive offense in NFL history, is what I’m seeing. Stop laughing. No, keep laughing. The chippier, the better!

  24. Gipper Says:

    geno711,

Thank you. Oneilbuc is a guy who needs to read his own press clippings. Sorry, Oneilbuc, but even you can’t make a kitty cat walk backwards.

  25. Oscar Says:

Oneilbuc, In the 2020 divisional round the defense intercepted Brees 3 times and got 4 total turnovers. Brady barely completed 50% of his throws and averaged 6 yards per attempt. So I would say the defense carried the day against the Saints. In the championship game against the Packers, Brady threw 3 picks but the defense came up big after all 3 to stymie the Packers. So how exactly did he put the team on his back in those big moments ? He needed the help of his defense to come up big. And they did and the rest is history as the Bucs go on to beat the Chiefs for their second ring. Tom Brady is one of the best ever and has put his team on his back many times. But he’s never done it by himself.

  26. VOT Says:

Bake has been nothing short of spectacular in taking the torch from the GOAT

His kryptonite is forcing throws when he feels like he has to produce – it’s a gunslingers curse

I’ll take it, as the D gets better he won’t feel the added pressure of the the past two seasons

  27. Oneilbuc Says:

Oscar. That’s my point exactly Brady has done it Baker Mayfield hasn’t!!

  28. Jmarkbuc Says:

Ironic how Oneillbuc thinks stats aren’t what’s important…

Check yo sheets Oneill, the only thing Jaboo ever had was stats, and not all of them good.

Now he’s on his fourth team and nowhere near a starting job.

    Get over yourself, it’s embarrassing.

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

Geno 711 . Before Jamies got hurt he was tearing our defense apart so who knew he would get hurt lol 🤣🤣. And yes we still need to draft a quarterback this year if Baker Mayfield doesn’t get us to the NFC Championship I stand 10 toes down on that. Now that you pull all of that up now go and pull up the 2023 training camp and show who should have been out starer at the time. Lol 🤣🤣 you ain’t going to do that. I wish I knew how so I can show you!!

  30. Oneilbuc Says:

Kenton Smith. I like your take because at least you want Superbowls and you have the confidence that we can win a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield. I’m more on the side of proving it by at least getting to the NFC Championship game this year it don’t have to be a Superbowl this season. If we get to the NFC Championship I will have more faith that we can get to a Superbowl with Baker Mayfield as our staring quarterback.

  31. Oneilbuc Says:

Davyboy. I don’t have no problem with your take and I can agree with you about it being a team game. I probably believe it’s about the team more than most people on here. All I’m saying is when it’s time to put the team on your shoulders in cruiser moments in big games just will us to a victory that’s all I’m saying. I don’t know why people act like Baker Mayfield is exempt from criticism. And again I don’t want to be the cowboys with Romo or Dak!!

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Bucs4Ever Says
“I think that is pretty fair, TBH. Too many picks.”

He only had 16 picks last year. I know that was tied for the most with Cousins, but it still seems okay to me…the year before though, he only had 10.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

WR injuries could have contributed to the picks I suppose.

  34. David Says:

Completely disagree. If you’re objective and go by the play of the quarterback over the 1-2 years… Baker should be # 4 or 5.
Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow are definitely ahead of him.
Patrick Mahomes may or may not be. You can make a case Baker’s been better.
Patrick has a Super Bowl in those two years though.

  35. Vanessa Anne Says:

I think 9th is a little bit too low.

Passing yards, TDs, passer rating, all in the top 5 for last year.

Plus all the intangibles… running downfield to throw blocks for Bucky, stiff-arming what’s-his-name while running toward the sideline and still completing the pass.

You don’t see too many QBs who do that.

I get why Chris Simms might ding Baker a bit for the 16 INTs.

I haven’t looked at the list, but I also know I don’t believe Justin Herbert should rank higher than Baker.

I’d bump Baker up a notch or two, maybe as much as 2 to 4 notches.

  36. Larrd Says:

Fine with Baker at 9 but the Hurts ranking seems low to me at this point.

  37. Let em Bake Says:

One could’ve predicted his numbers last year. We knew Liam was gonna open up the downfield attack beyond what Canales did. Ill take a repeat of Baker’s line. If the defense even improves marginally, that 10-7 turns to 12-5.

  38. Davyboy Says:

Onei, there is nobody on this site that thinks Baker is above criticism. Just make it deserving criticism. No one thinks Baker is perfect but be real about it. The fumble is a good example. Even if it was Bakers fault it isn’t what lost the game. Baker only getting 50% of his normal attempts to score is what lost the game. We got out coached. Washington controlled every bit of that game. It was a great game plan. Back to the criticism sorry, there are thousands of examples/proof of how to correctly run a jet sweep on you tube and thousand more on Google but you people who do not particularly like Baker refuse to look at them and admit that McMillan was too deep when anyone above 2 years old can “see” the reality. Looking back at 2024 games McMillan made a lot of costly mistakes. That sure wasnt his only one. That is what we can’t abide by. You people act like you don’t have eyes that connect to your brain or you dont think we do. That’s the problem. Keep the criticism real and there would be very little disagreements. But the few won’t do that because they have ulterior motives. Like Baker planted an OU flag at their 50 yard line 😢 or he still does the horns down sign when in Norman 🤔

  39. Davyboy Says:

So you few keep telling your twisted versions of reality and we will continue to set the record straight.☺️

  40. Obvious One Says:

Vanessa I think Baker IS getting Pluses and Negatives for his Intangibles ….

    “INTANGIBLE PLUSES”

The Pluses, as you point out :
1: WILLING TO THROW A BLOCK FOR THE TEAM! “LOVE IT!” And so does EVERYBODY…
2: Baker Mayfield WILL STIFF ARM YOU! “LOVE IT!” And so does EVERYBODY ELSE!
3: Baker is a Unique Leader… He can Rally Support and STIR UP “EXCITED FIRE” from “BOTH” the Offense AND the Defense! (See numbers 1 and 2)

And MUCH MORE to help Climb Up the QB rankings

    “NEGATIVE INTANGIBLES”

1: He WILL put himself in DANGER!
1A: HE WILL THROW A BLOCK that leaves ALL COACHES as well as Jason Licht holding their Hearts like Fred Sanford and Proclaiming to his pasted along wife “Elizabeth” I’M COMING BABY!

2: Baker WILL THROW A STIFF ARM “WITH” His THROWING ARM! And In Turn, He puts the ENTIRETY of ALL Of Our Season At RISK!

3: And Probably the one that Cost Him a Spot or Two in that QB Ranking….

TIED FOR THE “MOST” INTERCEPTIONS IN THE LEAGUE LAST SEASON!

Probably cost him at least 2 spots on the chart.

But I believe they ARE considering the intangibles.. Some raised his score, some lowered it BUT There is NOBODY that can call the man BORING!

I for one am “now” grateful to have him LEADING THE CHARGE! I SURELY DID NOT Start Out feeling that way. I Wanted a Home Grown and Drafted by US guy..

In a Very Real Sence, Baker actually Qualified but you COULD NOT Convince Me of it in the beginning of this AWESOME RIDE.

Now in the strangest way I kinda DO “feel” like we drafted him. MORE THAN THAT, WE TOOK A CHANCE ON HIM WHEN IT SEEMED HIS WHOLE EVERYTHING WAS LOST… He Was REBORN Right Here in Tampa Bay to the TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS and I found an Appreciation, was Pleasantly Surprised, and HE “EARNED EVERY OUNCE of MY RESPECT For Him Because the Man IS a “GENUINE FOOTBALL PLAYER” of an Old School! HE’S A GUN SLINGING, NO APOLOGIES, GUSTO FUELED, SHOOTER THAT RARELY MISSES! I KNOW that if he has the ball, WE HAVE A CHANCE!

Baker, really no differently than Brady, Saved our QB room and I Believe with ALL MY HEART that if Licht gives Baker a FULL AND ESPECIALLY “PROPERLY TRAINED” Offense AND Defense, Well I BELIEVE that Baker Mayfield CAN AND WILL WIN US AT LEAST ONE SUPER BOWL..!

I know I’m rambling but it’s ALL True and I guess I just couldn’t help myself. BUT.. I DO Understand where O’Neil is coming from Because I at one time felt EXACTLY like he does now. But I gotta say I’m a little surprised that O’Neil doesn’t give Baker at least some credit for how well we’ve hung in there after Brady, thanks to those “intangibles” he brings AND BROUGHT! Baker’s Your Guy too O’Neil. Enjoy him for as long as possible.

    There’s some Intangibles For Ya….

  41. Davyboy Says:

Oh I almost forgot. The best twisted version of reality is told by our favorite troll, that Baker is a choker a bum in big moments like the playoffs. When in reality Baker has the best playoff passer rating of all time. Of ALLTIME. It’s impossible to have the best passer rating and be a bum. But that’s what we are dealing with, someone who can’t admit to reality. They don’t like it so they make up their own version. It’s florid delusion at its best.

Oh I almost forgot. The best twisted version of reality is told by our favorite troll, that Baker is a choker a bum in big moments like the playoffs. When in reality Baker has the best playoff passer rating of all time. Of ALLTIME.

    ———

Yeah, Tom Brady has nothing on Baker because of the old out of date passer rating stat — that’s what is important, not the fact Baker has choked in the 4th quarter of his last two playoff games.

Meanwhile, what’s Baker’s QBR – where does he rank? That number actually takes into account when you do what, like if you’re throwing an INT with less than 2 minutes left in a playoff game when you’re down by one score – and it even pentalizies you if you fumble in the 4th quarter of a playoff game when you got the ball and you could go up by 2 scores and put the game away.

I have no issues with Baker at #9 on the list, sounds about right. But delionsial Baker Boi(s) claiming Baker is a more clutch playoff QB than Tom Brady, you’re literally retarded.

  43. garro Says:

    Simms?!?

Please! Spare me his opinion on anything Bucs related.

    Go Bucs!

  44. Davyboy Says:

Yeah I wasn’t going to mention your name RODNEY, only to save you the embarrassment but since you finally reared your ugly head, there is a reason the NFL won’t use the QBR. No one knows the whole story on it. ESPN will not divulge what all goes into making up that metric. I wonder why? But since Baker doesn’t do as good in it as he does the NFL’S tried and true metric, the passer rating, it is automatically the best one huh Rodney? Just because you say it’s outdated doesn’t mean it’s outdated. I said nothing about Tom Brady, where did that come from, never mind I don’t want to know. You act like Baker having the best playoff passer rating of all time is a bad thing, a lie, a fabrication. I knew that would get 😀 you. You do realize Baker had a passer rating of 146 in the playoffs this year, right? That was the highest again for your information. Just because it goes against your narrative, that one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL is a bum, it doesn’t make it a bad metric my expert friend. And how does a qb that is #9 rate as a bum? You sound really confused Rodney. Hes a bum, no i agree hes a #9, no no hes a bum. Which is it?? Need I remind you that you have been wrong about Baker over 20 times? You have been wrong about Baker more than anyone. And now you cant decide if you think he is a bum or ranks #9. I’m not sure you have ever been right about Baker. And you are the world’s worst about ignoring the facts. The fumble was all McMillan and NFL coaches on PFF admitted it and so did the “experts” on PFF but Rodney knows better doesn’t he?? Well if you had not been wrong about everything Mayfield your comments might carry some weight but you haven’t been, so… there’s that. To finish up, since I haven’t been wrong about Baker yet and you have been wrong constantly, who is retarded?
Concerning the fact that you have “no issues with Baker at #9”. You do realize being #9 is getting awfully close to being elite. In fact, there are those that would argue being inside the top 10 IS elite Rodney. Now are you admitting you were wrong Rodney?? Because you have argued and argued for over 2 years now that Baker was not elite and never would be elite. Hes barely average you said, middling is the word i believe you used. But now you think #9 is right? So, once and for all Rodney, which is it:
    A) hes a bum, B)hes middling or C) he ranks #9? Im even confused about where you stand. Is this another time that you were wrong pray tell?? That would be over 21 times Rodney. Well??

  45. Beeej Says:

In years past, it was all about td to interception ratio, regardless of the totals. As long as it was better than 2:1 it was ok

  46. MelvinJunior Says:

To give ‘THAT BIG’ of a darn (prob 20 full posts defending) about ANY NFL QB or player, as an adult especially, is mind-blowing to me.

  47. Vanessa Anne Says:

    @ObviousOne

Excellent points about both sides of Baker’s intangibles.

The same things that make him such a firebrand are also the things that could get him hurt or cost us a win.

I was like you. My mouth hit the floor when I first read he was joining us a couple of years ago.

I’ve done a complete turn around. Baker isn’t perfect, but very few could argue that he isn’t out there “proving it’ every day.

  48. Smarter than Joe Says:

10-15 range for Baker is fair and accurate.

I’m not gonna bang on the INT’s mainly because, he’s having to drag the whole team with how bad the defense has been the two years he’s been here. when you can’t trust the other side of the ball to get stops it puts pressure on the other side of the team.

Until Todd fixes the pass defense this team is not realistically going to hang with the top teams

Can win the South and maybe make a 1st round playoff game a challenge but that’s it

  49. Davyboy Says:

Melvin Melvin Melvin just because you’ve never had a friend, doesn’t mean someone else can’t.
If you folks don’t like it, stop lying about our quarterback. It REALLY is that simple. We have had this discussion before. And the 3 Baker haters were told to stop lying and trying to drag the team down and we would stop setting the record straight. But you won’t, so we won’t. It’s up to you….

  50. Davyboy Says:

Just read an article titled “Former Rams Gunslinger Expected to Reset the quarterback Market”. Its about our very own middling Quarterback, B. Mayfield. It says if he has another good year like 2024 he will reset the quarterback market. It is of the opinion that what cost us the game against Washington was the fact that we couldn’t stop them on 4th down. If we would have stopped them just 1 time we would have moved on to the divisional round they wrote. It’s funny how, in their opinion, the loss had nothing to do with a certain fumble. It was the fact that the defense couldn’t stop them on 4th down. Mmm
I didn’t realize middling quarterbacks reset markets??
