Todd Bowles Says Kyle Trask Would Make A Good Coach

June 2nd, 2025

“Just soak it all in, Kyle.”

Might Kyle Trask become the next Tampa Bay offensive coordinator?

The fifth-year veteran is coach material, says Todd Bowles.

Asked to name who on his roster he thinks would be a good future coach, Bowles fired off a short list that included his popular backup quarterback.

“I think Lavonte [David] can coach if he wants to coach because he’s very bright and he has a bright football mind on both sides of the ball,” Bowles told the Pewter Report podcast. “I think Kyle Trask would be a good football coach. Kyle has a very broad mind, both sides of the ball and he understands the game very well from that standpoint. The other guy that’s a very sharp player, Nelson, Anthony Nelson is a very polished guy. He could coach ball if he wants to because he’s a very good technician and he understands what to do and how to relay it all the time. Vita [Vea], if he wanted to really be a coach, he could be a coach. Because he’s played offense in high school and he understands the game very well.”

Joe never looked at Trask as the next Kevin O’Connell or Frank Reich, but perhaps that’s exactly what he is.

Trask certainly has been around a basket full of standout coaches, plus two stud quarterbacks and two high-octane offenses in his first four seasons.

Interesting! Has anyone ever gone from backup QB to OC? He would probably start off as a qb coach or passing game coordinator. I would think that Thad Lewis will get the nod one of these times.

Seems like you didn’t read the article. Awfully hostile, don’t you think?–Joe

Jason Garrett went pretty quickly up the ladder from QB to coach.

    True that!!!

    So did Kellen Moore?

  6. buc4evr Says:

Think he could be a good QB coach and possibly be an OC at some point. However,I would really like to see him get some playing time this year, especially if the Bucs have a big lead going into the 4th quarter of a game.

I hope one day we’ll get to hear the real story of why they drafted Trask in the 2nd round when they did. Was it really to learn behind Brady and eventually be a starter?

  8. Aqualung Says:

    Vita!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude can really kind of do everything.

  9. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Trask will make a great second string head coach someday!

  10. SlyPirate Says:

Trask learned from TB12 and Baker. He’s seen three different OC styles — One horrible, one okay, and one really good. Now he gets a 4th.

He definitely has a garnered a lot of experience during his time in Tampa.

  11. adam from ny Says:

if he really is qualified to be a coach, we probably do have the right guy in at backup qb, and ready to go in case of an emergency…

even tho people think he hasn’t yet gotten enough reps for them to rest their minds

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jon Gruden

  13. TDTB Says:

Wasn’t the book on Kyle that he was slow to learn the playbook? I don’t have any basis to either believe or discredit that view…I just know that was being reported when he was a third stringer behind TB. I would not expect slow learners to make good play callers. Constant in game analysis and adjustments would seem to DQ a slow learner.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Part of me wouldn’t mind seeing him I’m a game someday. Maybe if we have nothing to gain in week 17 or 18.

  15. Trask To The Future Says:

He’ll be the starter for the Bucs before going into coaching.

  16. Hodad Says:

People still complain about drafting Trask . They didn’t get it than, and still wonder why he was resigned. Now you know. We don’t see what he does behind the scenes. Why do you think rookies like J Mac did so well? Part of the reason is Trask would help them whenever they ask. He’d give his own time after practice helping get these young players get up to speed. He’s a selfless teammate, good dude, and his true value is lost on fans. I have know doubt if called upon, he won’t let us down.

  17. garro Says:

    Oh Nooo!

Just when you thought the Trask haters were finally satisfied….Here we go again!

    Go Bucs!

  18. heyjude Says:

Yes possibly Lavonte and Vita. I actually could see Trask as a high school coach to start off with, moving up years later. We don’t see all that the coaches see and know on the field. Baker has been around many coaches and play-callers. I could see him as a coach too.

  19. Aqualung Says:

I have a feeling we will see him thrown into the fire because of a dirty hit on Baker. Bowles needs to have his retaliatory plan in place in that event, unlike letting Roquan Smith walk out of the stadium unscathed when he took Chris out with the career threatening injury. It needs to be more than an eye for an eye, too.

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

The Bucs need to give Trask snaps in the regular season when they have the game in hand (not when Bake gets hurt). Trask needs experience before Bake goes down. I don’t know how he’ll play and if Bowles was honest, he and Grizz don’t know how Trask would do.

  21. Robbie lyon Says:

Hodad you said it perfectly but I also have the fact they didn’t even let Kyle hit free agency before resigning him, there had to be something in that contract more beneficial to kyle than money like guaranteed back up to Mayfield and some guaranteed playing time so we can all see what direction his career is going. I know he can play football, they just have to give him some snaps GOD please give him some snaps!!

  22. Marky mark Says:

Backhanded compliment. Truth is u suck as a player.
