“I’m Calling 2,000 Scrimmage Yards For You”

May 19th, 2025

Chats with Bucky Irving.

Bucky Irving doesn’t like to target numbers, unless it’s numbers of wins.

In a recent interview with Kay Adams of FanDuel TV, Adams tried to pry from Bucky his personal goals for rushing, after hitting 1,122 yards on the ground last year.

Bucky basically said he’s not worried about stats. Seemingly surprised Bucky would go there, Adams tried again. “I’m calling 2,000 scrimmage yards for you, does that feel right?”

Bucky seemed flattered.

“Yeah, that feels right,” Bucky said. But he wouldn’t talk numbers and Adams wanted to know why.

In a roundabout way, Bucky seemed to suggest the Bucs had bigger fish to fry.

“No, I don’t really go out there and think like, ‘I gotta get this certain amount of yards [or] I gotta do this, this season,'” Bucky said. “I pretty much just live in the moment.

“Whatever I gotta do to help my team, and we come out with a win, I’m happy once we got the win.”

That’s a pretty unselfish way to look at goals. Joe’s pretty impressed.

Joe hears a lot about how the Bucs have a great locker room and outsiders note that the Bucs are always looking for a certain type of player. Joe guesses that Bucky is one of those guys.

Usually, running backs want to eat and have statistical goals in mind. If Bucky does, he certainly doesn’t let anyone in on them. — aside from the fact he wants wins over stats.

He might have generated 2000 yards from scrimmage last year if he had started all of the games. The room will be much better this season because White isn’t going to just let the starting go without a fight. Right now he’s probably working his tail off to win his job back in camp.

Young dude with his head screwed on right. Refreshing.

  3. Jeff Says:

Folks, Bucky won’t play more than 10 games. He has a chronic toe injury that will never fully heal. He had it in college. He’s a fun player, but he should only play part time. Try to make him the starter and the Bucs will Lose him.

  4. Fred McNeil Says:

Well, I guess an idiot like you would know, Jeff.

  5. NLK@boston Says:

2000 yds is too much of a load to put on him. balanced attack with white and tucker is the best strategy. he’ not built for that. keep the number around 1500 and pray all 3 are health for the playoffs.

Where’s his Grandpa to set things straight?

I wouldn’t want Bucky to carry the ball 80% of the time anyhow. I want him to get the most touches for sure but I’d like to spread it around a little. Give White the second most carries and then definitely give Tucker I higher percentage than he saw last season. Don’t want to burn out a guy Bucky’s size.

Jeff, I’m glad one of us is privy to more of the medicals on Irving than the scouts were, whew! Joe knows that Jason reads this, so hopefully soon Jason will relay this to the medical staff and they can start preparing him for part-time work. I wonder if your your grandfather will corroborate this special Intel?

you can print all of joe’s kay adams pics and wallpaper your entire house

Tucker might be Jim Brown at this point and we might never find out. I really need more cowbell. If he’s as good as he looks, damn son.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

Bucky cares about wins, so he’s probably working in the weight room and his pass pro. I hope Joe will find out if Bucky had toe surgery in the offseason. Skip Peete needs to improve Tuck’s pass pro so he can get more snaps.

    2024 Scrimmage Yard Leaders

    Barkley 2283
    Henry 2114
    Gibbs 1929
    Robinson 1887

If all 17 were against the 2024 Panthers then yes I can see it. Good Teams shut that RB safety valve off when they played the Bucs just like the Commanders in the playoffs. If they are throwing to a back then they are not using their weapons ion the outside.

Bucs ran the ball 480 times last season. take away Mayfield’s 60 and that leaves 420. Irving had 207 of those. That’s half. Run that up to 300 and that’s 6th in attempts in 2024,

Henry is 247# and Barkley is 235# and the Bucs are going to use their 195# RB more than half the time or use their WR weapons less.

That makes no sense but then Kay rarely does either

I don’t see it. Bucky isn’t built for that kind of pounding. I’d like to see them mix in Tucker more, and keep White productive. I’d like to keep Bucky fresh so he’s got something in the tank (and he’s not injured) later in the year and in the playoffs when they’ll need him most.

  14. Bee Says:

Nah. Have him split time with Tucker. Keep Bucky fresh.

  15. Stpetematt Says:

Having a guy like Tucker with 4.3 speed means the moment he hits a big hole he’s gone. We need that on the field quite often- especially with this excellent offensive line. I like Bee’s plan. Can have White on the field for obvious passing plays.

    Too much pancake make up

  17. FortMyersDave Says:

I just hope Bucky makes some explosive plays, builds on last year’s success and helps the Bucs win double digit games. If the Bucs have a comfortable lead maybe the Bucs let Tucker get some touches. Rashaad White is in a contract year, maybe he will play like he wants to stay a Buc and spells Bucky enough to keep Bucky fresh while also helping the Bucs matriculate that pigskin down the field and rack up some yards and points.

  18. David Says:

Do not overuse him, they have a lot of weapons

  19. Vanessa Anne Says:

I agree with others about not overusing Bucky.

We have a three-headed monster in our RB room and we should use all three.

Sean showed what he could do when Rachaad missed a game last season. We need to get him more snaps.

Rachaad is clearly the best at pass protection/blocking and catching out of the backfield, but he can run the ball as well. Maybe not as good as Bucky, but he can still run it. I wouldn’t limit him to strictly passing downs. Mix it up a little bit and make opposing defenses wonder what we’re doing.

Bucky is still our No. 1 RB, but the few extra snaps Sean and Rachaad get will benefit us, not hurt us.

2000 yards? I’d love to see it, but that’s a bit of a leap. Makes for good clickbait though, lol.

  20. geno711 Says:

I hope I am wrong but the love for Tucker seems higher than it should be.

I see regression as just as likely on his yards per carry as him maintaining the success he had last year (that seems based upon 2 or 3 games) and he is still the least effective pass blocker on the team.

    But we will see.
