Cody Mauch May Be Among NFL’s Best

July 13th, 2025

Reason to smile.

It may be time for Bucs right guard Cody Mauch to get some love.

And not just for his toothless grin.

A chart by the Twitter handle @fball_insights broke down players on offense responsible for pressures, or the percentage of pressures each position allowed.

Mauch was one of the more dominant right guards in the game if you believe this chart, for his efforts keeping Baker Mayfield’s uniform clean.

Mauch last year played 99 percent of the offensive snaps (1,133). Per @fball_insights, of those 1,133 snaps, 13.1 percent, or 148 snaps, Mauch was at least partially responsible for allowing a pressure.

Only Denver quarterback Bo Nix and Las Vegas quarterback Gardner Minshew saw a lower percentage of pressures come from their right guards.

Not factored in was Mauch playing next to a rookie. So you have to figure Mauch may have allowed some pressures while he was trying to help center Graham Barton.

Given this information, and earlier this offseason Tristan Wirfs saying he’s never seen a player recover as well as Mauch does from making an initial mistake to still make a play on the same snap (Joe had Wirfs’ intel corroborated by Bucs types), maybe it’s about time we start looking at Mauch as one of the game’s better right guards?

Percentage of allowed pressures per offensive line position. (Note on the graphic below: Skule played for both Luke Goedeke and Wirfs, so the percentages for Bucs’ tackles likely could have been lower.)

I was saying all of last year that Cody Mauch was balling out

  2. LakelandBuc Says:

Cody Mauch was getting a lot of blame early last season from the fans. But it was because he was playing between Justin Skule and Graham Barton. And they were taking a beating like a ragdoll. Especially in the Detroit game, Cody Mauch had to help them both, and contain the DE.

  3. RagingBrisket Says:

He also may be overrated. I’ll wait on another season or two before crowning him.

  4. Teacherman Says:

I have re-watched the entire season the last 2 weeks.

Brederson got beat a lot. I hope only the first year of his deal his guaranteed.

Because we need to pay Goedeke.

We can draft an elite LG in the 2nd round next year.

    Brederson is decent. He’s serviceable.

    But he’s not a mauler.

  5. Beeej Says:

Was not Opeta beating him in camp prior to the injury?

  6. Jeffs grandpa Says:

So LG seems to be the problem

  7. Stpetematt Says:

Opeta could still beat him this year but it would be pretty incredible after the payday. Brederson did seem to get better over time and they probably see a lot of improvement now.

  8. JimBobBuc Says:

Mauch had only 2 penalties called on him last year, 1 holding and 1 false start. That’s tied for the least in the NFL among starters. Pretty darn good to me.

  9. ModHairKen Says:

This is Mauch’s year to be elite and be recognized as elite. The size and strength are there. The recovery is there. And he will have a much more confident C and a fully healthy RT.

  10. KABucs Says:

This chart definitely backs up with everybody has said, that Bredeson is the weakest link on an outstanding line. If he improves his game in camp and such this season, will show what kind of coach we have in Carberry. I expect improvement from Barton just with experience & immaturity.

I am hoping for elite and unrecognized enough that the Bucs can afford a second contract. $5 x $10 million per year is more money than most of us will see, but still salary cap friendly. Elite money is going to break the bank or dig a salary cap hole.

I remember watching a replay of a run where he instantly struck to the right to help the tackle, bounced backed to the left to help the center, and then leaped up field to block at the second level ahead of the running back! I had to replay it several times and just kept saying, “Wow!”

  12. David Says:

The tackles and right guard were great. Left guard should be improved as should Barton at center.
Going to be fun to watch!

  13. Vanessa Anne Says:

Cody doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

Those are darn good numbers when you compare them to the other RGs.

And, he’s still on his rookie contract.

Plus, Graham has a year under his belt now.

Cody won’t have to worry about shifting over to help out in coverage so much.

I see him as getting better and growing more in his position this year.

  14. Pickgrin Says:

Man – Bredeson allowed pressure almost 25% of the time… 3rd worst LG in the league…. woof

I honestly never thought his play last year was worthy of the contract the Bucs gave him. And it basically locks him in as the starter at LG for the next 2 years – either that or we will have the league’s most expensive back up Guard…..

Cody on the other hand is coming along nicely. Looking damn solid in just his 2nd year in the league! He’s got Pro Bowl potential – all of our highly drafted OLine players do….. Goedeke is there if he notches up 1 more level this year. Barton will get there quickly I’m betting – this year or next.

    ============

I saw this early in the year after watching the ALL22. Cody was getting heat as people thought he was blowing blocks, but watching the ALL22, the Bucs had their offensive lineman moving a ton, and there was clearly times where Cody was supposed to pass on someone to Barton (either releasing or just letting them go by) who wasn’t in the proper place. I remember people claiming Cody was really playing poorly, but that wasn’t the case.

I said last year after the season, when people were down on Cody, that his only issue was playing strength – he always seemed to be in the right place but was getting moved by defenders and he needed to bulk up over the offseason – and apparently that happened. The game that sold me on that was the game vs the Eagles where he was repeatedly in one-on-one situations with Jalen Carter and was just manhandling him.

In any case, I think I’m higher on Cody than most but I wouldn’t put him in that top tier yet. I hope he gets there, but that top tier would be an Ali Marpet type of player. Right now I think he’s more like a better version of Alex Cappa with more of an upside, so perhaps he gets to that Marpet level.

Nuts on Joe! This dude battles hard in the middle. He gets extra credit from this fan for actually preferring a toothless grin. LOL

    Go Bucs!
