Backfield Beast Emerges?

September 26th, 2010

Joe can’t wait to see LeGarrette Blount get the rock again. Damn, it’s not for another two weeks after next Sunday’s bye.

The undrafted rookie running back showed up against what might be the NFL’s top defense. He runs hard. And, frankly, he was getting it done where Cadillac Williams couldn’t find any space. That’s not coincidence. Joe loves Williams, but he’s a below average running back in the NFL at this point.

Blount led the team today with six carries for 27 yards and a hard-fought touchdown, flashing some angry effort and great will. Caddy had six carries for 13 yards.

Joe’s really pulling for Blount. In the grand scheme of the Bucs’ rebuilding plan, it would be glorious if they’ve found a gem here and won’t have to draft a running back in 2011, especially now that they probably have to grab a safety.

But screw next season. The Bucs are 2-1, and Joe would love to see Blount run downhill on the Bengals on Oct. 10.

Let me be the LAST to say that I was wrong about the shortcomings of run game falling solely on the shoulders of the O-line. I’ve been defending Cadillac for weeks but I can’t do it anymore. Our o-line can only open slivers of holes and Blount burst through them. I’ve been rooting for Caddy but it’s over for him after this year.

  2. Dew Says:

Yep. Blount was the one bright spot today. I hope Rah makes a move and starts Blount over Caddy. And also Huggy. Today was just not our day. Looked bad on both sides of the ball. Ugly loss.

  3. MTM Says:

Blount was the only bright spot for the Bucs today. I am tired of the Steelers imposing their will on the Bucs. The Bucs did not show up today.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

Agree with ya Joe, Blount earned another look. He got his yardage during trash time, but he did run with purpose! I thought Benn looked dynamic on his grabs , too. Stroughter gave the steelers a TD with his patty cake act

  5. Capt.Tim Says:

Would love to find out we already have a great young back on this team!!oh, Falcons just defeated saints- we are in a 3 way tie for first place in NFC south

  6. troxell8t8 Says:

I’ve been a big Caddy fan also. However, everyone is correct, he is a platoon back at best. Blount showed some good burst and real power. He has to get more playing time against Cincy and I’m sure he will.

  7. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

The loss of Tanard Jackson broke our backs. Grimm gave up an easy TD to Wallace, and it was downhill after that. Talib was beat, and tipped the ball for a TD Catch. Blount was the one bright spot that emerged today. He needs to be playing the rest of the season.
Once we fell so far behind the Steelers, they knew we had to pass. It was embarassing to be a Tampa fan at this game. There were more Steeler fans then Tampa Fans. It was almost like a home game for them.

  8. Bucnjim Says:

This team is better than that! Sometimes the ball does not bounce your way and today was one of those days. Once the Steelers get a lead like that they’re too good to give it up. Bucs must do a better job of grabbing a lead early! Our punting situation gave up momentum right away. The Steelers punter kicks one 62 yards to pin us back and we punt it 30 to give them the ball in Bucs territory. It’s all history after that exchage of events. If the Bucs cannot get some decent punts off this year it will unravel quickly.

    Joe here,

Capt. Tim – Blount got most of his carries with the Bucs trailing 7-3. That was not “trash time.” That’s what made it most exciting. You must have missed something.

  10. eric Says:

Our wins are against teams that havent won a single game. Destroyed by a decent team today with fourth string QB. Imagine if big ben had played?

Blount was playing at garbage time.

Time to face facts. Very little improvement from last year.

  11. Bucnjim Says:

Eric; good to have you back (NOT)

  12. Bucnjim Says:

Whatever you say; it’s still good to be 2-1 and tied for first with the Saints and Falcons.

  13. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Eric – The game was 7-3 and Blount came in and ran for 12 yards, 4 yards, 2 yards and 8 yards, and the Bucs came a way with a field goal. How is that garbage time??

  14. Aldo Says:

eric, get a life!! go with miami tunas, or atlanta dixie chicks, why to be bucs fan if u still thrashing all things huh?? cmon man if ur not a bucs fan GET OUT!!!

  15. eric Says:

The whole game was garbage time!

  16. Javier n Wimauma Says:

Blount was a beast today. I watched the game via _______ and Blount was hammering the Steelers linebackers and even getting extra yards on strong second efforts.

There was one play where Troy Poly hit Blount and then got dragged a few extra yards. I mean you gotta love a young stud that can drag the strongest of strong safeties in the league.

Blount is another Alstott but with a shimmy shake and some speed to boot. If their is anyone to get excited about, its finally, we might have a real NFL HB that can gain 4 yds per carry on average and always fall forward. Hey didn’t Graham used to do that?

  17. JDouble Says:

Anyone who is still hating on Blount is just ridiculous. He has a temper problem. So what. Untill he screws up here in Tampa you need to root for him because he is a beast. He prooved that today against the #1 run defense in the league.

It doesn’t matter how nice of a guy Caddie is, he is not a starting caliber RB. It’s time to move on. It’s time for Blount and Huggins to get thier turn and let us know now wether we need to draft a RB early next year.

  18. Javier n Wimauma Says:

Speaking of Blunts… I’ll be right back! 🙂

  19. Pete Dutcher Says:

On blount, I liked what I saw…but let’s not get too exited. It was his first and only game so far, and he likely came into the game stoked up. Let’s see what he does after a few games.

I disagree that Blount was the one good thing we saw today though.

In the first few minutes, the Bucs came out agressive. One reciever was blocking and knocked a defender down three times…in one play. He owned that defensive player.

  20. Pete Dutcher Says:

    exited = excited 😛

  21. Tommy Boy Says:

I was screaming my head off to give him the ball back. I too am excited about this kid.

  22. Jamie Says:

If you’re looking for another headcase to add to our collection, including Tanard Jackson, Jerramy Stevens, and Aqib Talib, look no further than LeGarrette Blount. Watching him celebrate angrily after scoring that meaningless garbage time TD gave me some scary flashbacks to his sucker punch against Boise St.

At least Talib and Jackson are talented.

  23. Bucnjim Says:

No offense, but we need some angry players on this team. Now if we can only find us an angry MLB we would be doing something.

  24. d-money Says:

“Speaking of Blunts… I’ll be right back!”

Now we know why Javier is always spewing incoherent nonsense.

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

Blount was a pleasant surprise today. He is a big strong back. 1 game = 1 loss and that is all.

  26. will the beast Says:

This was a typical it aint going to happen day every team has them murphy’s law. Blount object up the Gut is the new chant even if only 15,000 fans show up to shout it out. This is the new war cry. Blount object up the Gut I had a good feeling about this cat he has something to prove and he’s going to make it happen

  27. Paul Says:

Blount is a beast! On that TD he got so low on the initial contact that he was able to bounce it off for the score. That’s good to see from a power runner and I haven’t seen it here since Alstott.

  28. Capt.Tim Says:

Joe- I was thinking of his touchdown at the end. I’m with ya! I hope this guy brings some excitement to the running game. Wanna see this Lumpkin kid too! If they are good enough, start getting them some experience now! Again, I thought Benn looked great with the ball in his hands , too! Let’s see him getting some more playing time! This is the year!

  29. Paul Says:

eric, it wasn’t garbage time. I loved seeing Blount drag Polamalu across the 1st down marker.
