Bucs Add Another Name To The Offensive Coordinator Search

February 8th, 2023

The Bucs sure are searching and searching and searching for an offensive coordinator.

Yet another name has emerged on the public Bucs interview list. (Joe can only imagine who is on the private list.) Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Bucs will next meet with Seahawks quarterbacks coach Dave Canales.

Canales, 41, has been working with Seattle in various capacities on the offensive side of the ball since 2010. He has never been an offensive coordinator. Canales has been working with Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll since his days at the University of Southern California.

Joe is almost surprised it’s taking so long for the Bucs to find a playcaller they want. Is money and issue? And if so, why?

If cash is no factor, then wasn’t there a Todd Bowles wish list in place months ago, four or five names deep? Byron Leftwich was fired three weeks ago.

  1. Go Bucs Go Says:

Now, this is pure desperation personified in action.
Not liking where this search effort is headed.
Let’s start looking at basic and long term solution, tempering expectations for upcoming season.
Build the team from the ground up. I don’t mind fire sales to let some key old players go. Glazers need to meet up with HC Todd Bowles to discuss his job security in maneuvering such moves.
I feel like we are putting too much meaningless conditions and strings to make any move forward at this point.

    Go Bucs!

  2. Da Bucs Guy Says:

The problem is that everyone knows it will be a 1 year job. Bowles will get blown out after next season and all coaches.

  3. gp Says:

**wasn’t there a Todd Bowles wish list**

Based on the experience of the majority of the names we’re hearing, I wonder if Bowles is looking for someone who WON’T be an option to take over when the losses start stacking up.

So far, only Monken has OC experience. The rest are assistants of assistants.

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I read that the Bucs scheduled a second interview with Pitcher from Cincinnati, and I would be ok with him, IF he will come here.
It appears Monken was merely going through the motions so he can squeeze Georgia for even more money!
I can not see him leaving Georgia, except for a NFL Head Coaching job.
Georgia is a dynasty, and if they win a 3rd national championship next year, Monken can get a head coaching job. + He makes 2 million a year at Georgia, so tell me why he would leave ?

Eric Bienemy is Andy Reid’s Byron Leftwich, LOL

  5. richbucsfan Says:

Seems like the Bucs don’t know what they want in an OC. Too many interviewed is as bad as not enough.

  6. DFW Buc Says:

As I wrote two weeks ago the Bucs will dink around until any candidate worth their weight is gone. They also just might have a head coach issue that no one trusts working with him.

  7. Kalind Says:

Again. This is why you had to can them both. Keeping Bowles was and is a mistake. As this coaching search is proving….painfully.

  8. BrianBucs Says:

    Joe
Have your sources told you anything about who all is sitting in on these OC interviews?
Obviously Licht and Bowles, but do you know who else?
    The Glazers? Arians? etc

  9. Jp09 Says:

The Bucs are showing respect to the Eagles and Chiefs by not interviewing their assistants while they prep for the biggest game of the year. Bucs new OC will come from one of the two teams playing Sunday

  10. sasquatch Says:

Kevin Patullo, passing game coordinator of the Eagles, could be on the list. Went to USF and was on Bowles’ staff in NY.

  11. steele Says:

When you don’t have an attractive job, this is what you get. Assistants who just want a shot. No sage architects of offense. No one who would threaten Bowles’ absolute authority.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Toad Bowles can’t even make up his mind on this. People probably don’t want to work for him especially if his plan vision foe the type of team he wants is stupid

  13. R.O. Says:

As the great Bill Murray once said. Its hard to win an argument with a smart person, but its damn near impossible to win an argument with a stupid person. Canales just had a 2nd interview with the Ravens. Whats the problem with interviewing a wide range of candidates? Furthermore, these are just the ones that have leaked out. We want a youg dynamic Offensive coach to get the best out of the young QBs who will hoepfully be on our roster the next season or 2. Trask, Hendon Hooker maybe.

  14. Tim Says:

Even though most coaches acknowledge this may well be a one year gig, for the position coaches it’s a year of their offense on their resume. I’m sure all things considered, there are still quite a few coaches that would be happy to give it a go.

  15. kgh4life Says:

No one wants the job, simple as that.

  16. kgh4life Says:

Another factor could be the holdovers from the previous staff. Goodwin, Moore and Gilbert are still on the team interestingly enough. Usually, an offensive coordinator hires his own guys.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

Top guys with track records don’t want to be near this coaching train wreck.

Just desperate young guys who will take anything.

That is the Bucs offensive future.

  18. SED14 Says:

We continue getting the JV squad of OC candidates and it’s not gonna change as long as low energy no fight no fire no passion Bowles is still here. I’m assuming the Glazers see this plain as day like the rest of us but at this point who knows?

One thing I do know is that I got a call today from my season ticket representative and I told her I have no intention of renewing my tickets as long as Mr Low Energy and Listless himself is standing emotionless on the sidelines with the same deer in the headlights look week after week. I’m sorry but I just can’t give another penny of my hard earned money to this organization who is forcing us to watch Mr Low Energy steer our rudderless ship into the rocks while being outcoached and underprepared week in and week out.

  19. ClwJB Says:

No one in their right mind is coming to work for this dead man walking HC

One and done with a big fat 12 loss season is their immediate future and everyone knows it

We end up with some offensive quality control assistant that last called plays in pop Warner at this point

Article hits a key point – we all knew Leftwich was toast well prior to the bye week and this is the result of months and months of preparation??????

Either the front office completely dropped the ball or no one wants to work for sucky Todd Bowles

    Which sounds more plausible????

  20. MDFree Says:

If this guy had a hand in anyway of reviving geno smiths career this could be a good hire. Russ was a rookie too while he was there so they know how to develop qbs over there.

  21. Goatfarmer Says:

At this point we might as well have Simple Jack as offensive coordinator. We already have Bowelszo as headless coich.

    Ruined,

    Toad.

  22. BucsFan81 Says:

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if Bowles finds a way to call the offense and then promote someone to call the defensive plays lol

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Cobraboy…good grief I hope you’re wrong….I fear you’re not.

  24. Tye Says:

If they look hard enough, maybe the Bucs will find another team’s ball boy willing to be the OC for Toilet Todd!

  25. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

I like Dan Pitcher. I read an article about how Zac Taylor had him studying offenses around the league to gain useful information for situational play calling. He helped Burrow become an elite QB, and understands analytics. I hope we give him a shot, although I wonder what would happen if he is good and Bowels gets fired regardless.

  26. Slickrick Says:

Bowels job should be safe as long as he finds a decent OC. Whoever comes here better be confident they can run a good offense. Otherwise they’re out along with Bowels next season

  27. westernbuc Says:

Leave no stone unturned. I’d rather Licht and co dig deep than get a flashy name just to see everyone lose their jobs next year

  28. TheRealDrew Says:

I figured they were waiting on the super bowl to hire the guy from the Eagles, and just interviewing others in the meantime.

  29. Goatfarmer Says:

Based on everything…..Bucs will announce 107 year old Tom Moore as the new Offensive Coordinator.

  30. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

LOL is Mike Alstott coming out of retirement?

Hey I know how to solve the Bucs offensive woes – let’s run the ball on 1st 2nd and 3rd down

F it – let’s run a high school offense. Hey why not? Maybe we can get fancy and run some counters.

  31. Drew Says:

Tampa pulled the trigger on their OC too quick to get rid of blame for a bad season that ended #12 career. There should have been some changes on the O and D team coaches and players. If not so already they will regret firing the OC.
    There isn’t that much available…

  32. Firethecannons Says:

Joe, the bucks are searching so much because the Buccaneers outfit is such a dumpster fire with Todd bowls. Who in their right mind would want to work for that man he’s just gonna lose more and more games.

  33. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles wants someone who isn’t a threat to take over….that’s where his mind is at. He’s positioning for when he’s failed again.

  34. Joe Swanson Says:

Surprised they haven’t interviewed Dirk K.?

  35. Craig Says:

No well resumed OC will come here, unless they see a coup and a run for HC a year down the road.

Bucs need to find a well connected younger guy with some fresh ideas. Gimmick plays might be the key to next season.

  36. mark2001 Says:

Said it was going to go this way on day one. It isn’t even about football. It is about moving along in your career and wanting to position yourself for the future. Simply put, we aren’t going to get a good, experienced OC under Todd Bowles. You may get a guy in his late 30’s/40’s who has been a QB coach or clip board holder. But it may very well be a one year job. Still, if a candidate is looking for a shot into a OC promotion and a chance to improve your resume in your career from a position coach elsewhere, it might be a good opportunity and with luck, you might just find a hidden gem. Longshot, but we have been there since the day we decided to retain Bowles. He isn’t even like Dungy was in a position to win, working under a great HC. Bowles hasn’t proven that.

  37. SB~LV Says:

    Lol….
    Free Beer Tomorrow
Maybe the Bucs will be the first team to use real time AI to call plays

  38. Capece is Kaput Says:

Bring back Jeff Jagodzinski!! This is right up there in terms of most embarrassing moments in Buc History….or maybe top 20… there are so many to chose from.
Per Wiki (and verified by my own brain because unfortunately, I remember it well) – On September 3, 2009, the day before the team’s final preseason game, the Buccaneers announced that they had dismissed Jagodzinski from his role and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Greg Olson. The firing came due to concerns about Jagodzinski’s ability to communicate plays in a timely manner. He had been asked by the head coach to provide details to the team’s offensive play calling, however he was unable to provide familiarity with the Tampa Bay playbook, (deferring to a subordinate to answer questions), thus exposing his over reliance on subordinates.
As they say: “those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it”.

  39. PSK Buc Fan Says:

It’s very simple, NO ONE WANTS THE JOB!

  40. mark2001 Says:

PSK.. I wouldn’t say no one. I explained why no one with experience and a proven track record would.

  41. mark2001 Says:

I think O’Neil would take the job, if he could also bring back Jameis…LOL.

  42. HC Grover Says:

Does not matter who they hire. Still Coach Bozo game plans and system.

  43. NutterBuccer Says:

Baltimore Ravens and bucs seem to be interviewing alot of the same coaches. Ravens are a very good franchise so I’m good with us doing the same as them.

  44. A Bucs Fan Says:

I’d like Pitcher or Monken. Let’s not forget that seven other teams have openings at OC as well so there is lots of competition. Take that with the Bucs not having the greatest team, without a QB, and a defensive coach who hasn’t stuck with an OC for more than one year at a time.

It’s a difficult sell at this point.

  45. Allbuccedup Says:

Can’t find an OC that wants to run the ball 75% of the time. If you do your going to need a stable full of backs.

  46. gbobucsfan Says:

Is Al Bundy available? He is out of Polk High School.

  47. Bosch Says:

This is not complicated. By not pinching the Bowel movement Bucs have left themselves in a no win situation. If they continue this path they wil have to settle for an OC that is somewhere between below average and outright unqualified. Their salary cap issue leaves them with NO leverage In FA.

The better path would be to jettison Bowels now (will cost the owners severance $$$, but the can afford it); hire Monken as HC and let him build the future coaching staff. Meanwhile, fix the salary cap while doing the best you can to retain a younger nucleus to build around. A 3 win season is a near certainty for 2023 (and a top 3 draft pick for 2024) no matter which path is chosen. The question is do you just let it happen and then start open or do you start building your future now.

  48. Old black man Says:

No one wants the job…. They interviewed didn’t they? Take your fake fan @sses someplace else. Lesson from pops! You’re welcome.
