Were The Bucs Among Teams Lobbying The NFL To Change The Trade Deadline?

November 6th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

General manager Jason Licht had a huge decision to make after Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett went down 11 days ago with a season-ending Achilles injury.

The Bucs don’t have a guy on the roster to replace Shaq’s ability and all-around play. Few teams do.

The Bucs, in what’s allegedly an all-in season with Tom Brady in a crappy NFC South, could have made a bold play to replace Shaq. Instead, they stood pat at the Nov. 1 trade deadline and will roll with Anthony Nelson versus, say, Bradley Chubb.

Perhaps a reason for the Bucs passing on a trade is their 3-5 record. Maybe they would have added firepower (and mortgaged a bit of the future) if they were 5-3, or if they had more time to make a decision.

Adam Schefter, the BSPN super insider, wrote today that some teams were asking the NFL last week to move back the trade deadline.

Apparently, that’ll be hot topic for owners this offseason and they may approve a later deadline. It’s great for fan interest. However, a too-late deadline isn’t the fairest option, but Joe thinks allowing a few more weeks works well.

Joe would bet a few bucks Licht was one GM asking for more time. Joe hates typing it, but perhaps Licht was thinking, ‘lose to the Rams and we sell’ as much as he was contemplating, ‘win and we buy.’

Lol! Clowns! THIS WAS YOUR LAST CHANCE, JASON! Brady’s gone in 2023 and another lost decade draweth neigh. I get it, though. You know your club has no chance due to the Byron of Leftwhich, lord of the 1st down run.

  2. richbucsfan Says:

The lack of interest by the FO mirrors the lack of interest on the field. Rams 38- Bucs 12. 3-14 season is what you get with bored players, incompetent coaches, and a FO that makes such obvious misjudgments on talent, i.e. #67.

  3. Listnfrmafar Says:

Save the money, Aaron Donald retires Brady today.

    LET’S GO!!!!

1st & 10 forced run up the middle, Lenny 2yd loss.

2nd play action short screen right broken up by Ramsey

3rd & 12 Brady drops back, Donald blows over Gotecke or Leviette for a sack, he slams him down but no call, Brady concussion protocol.

    Game Over!!!

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

    This is just depressing.

  5. HC Grover Says:

+1st play either a bomb or up the gut.

  6. FrontFour Says:

Not worth trading the future at this point. So many holes one player won’t make a difference. I like bringing back Tyler Johnson and putting Gage and do nothing while I cash big checks Julio Jones on the bench or on the street.

  7. Dooley Says:

This is not a team that’s “one player/trade away” from winning games

  8. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

The Bucs-Rams game is going to be ugly. Two teams going down the same road in the wrong direction. Who wins? I don’t wins this ugly game. Who really cares? I don’t because neither one deserves to win.

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

This will come down to coaching and like Leftnuts play calling, we know what happens next.

  10. Kentucky Buc Says:

Sheesh. Some of you guys can’t put two words together , let alone two sentences. Hard to take you seriously when you can’t put a coherent thought down in a post.

  11. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Selling of your players for draft picks is stupid. You don’t get better getting rid of good football players. It’s a loser mentality only taken by loser franchises that continually draft in the top ten.

  12. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs are about 3 players away from relevancy and being competitive while Jason Licht does squat-FIRE LICHT because HE STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Marine Buc Says:

Our salary cap situation is not good. We currently have @ $3.5M on hand and LT D. Smith is probably the only contract left to restructure.

We already will have @ $50M of dead cap space next year as we pay players who will be free agents for not playing in Tampa.

    Tom Brady – $35M
    A. Hicks @ $4M
    J. Jones @ $4M
    LVD @ $7M

We need to clear up this cap mess before we continue to pile on more worthless debt…

  14. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Cap Mess was created by poor allocation of funds by GM Jason Licht-Fire him

  15. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Some of you wishing to fire Licht have a short memory. He built a team that won a Super Bowl just two seasons ago, and then he brought the entire team back last season, something that never happens. We would have been legitimate contenders last season if not for some key injuries (and one case of mental illness amongst our WRs).

If he traded for the number of players now to replace Shaq and fill in some other holes he’d have to use so much draft capital. Those of you criticizing him now for now bringing in players would be criticizing him for years to come for mortgaging their future.

To win a Super Bowl you need more than a great roster. You need a bit of luck as well, avoiding key injuries come playoff time. We had it in 2020 but neither 2021 or 2022. Get over it!

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ BFSince96

I agree. I’m not calling for Licht’s head at the moment.

However – Our GM needs to take a bite of this poo-poo pie… The free agents he bought in this year have been a horrid waste of funds.

    A. Hicks?
    J. Jones?
    R. Gage?
    B. Perriman?
    L. Ryan?
    K. Rudolph?

A far cry from the quality FAs he brought in a few years back –

    Suh
    JPP
    AB
    Gronk
    Fornette

When you overpay for older oft injured players – this is what you get… 3-5.

  17. D-Rome Says:

    BucsFanSince1996,

I agree with you. Firing Licht doesn’t do anything. Firing coaches doesn’t do anything either for that matter. All it does is make the organization look worse. It makes the person that does the firing look terrible unless it’s the owners decision.

Look at Detroit. Dan Campbell has fired two assistants in his tenure. Did that team get better? Who looks worse now, the assistants or Dan Campbell?

  18. BucsFanSince76 Says:

No , what makes you look real bad is when you have your LAST legitimate shot at a Super Bowl with the GOAT and you cannot even wallow in mediocrity , because mediocrity is ABOVE you.
Bucs say they are ALL IN for THIS YEAR , but when their weaknesses are exposed and well documented-worst rushing attack in FIFTY FREAKING YEARS and a Dline that cannot STOP ANYONE. If you are ALL IN as they say , make the necessary moves to get it done-Sign Tretter,Sign Suh, Trade for Chubb and fill some gaping holes.
Please do not talk about the future at all , cuz the Bucs say they are all in.

  19. Kentucky Buc Says:

Who do u fire? The Coach who sucks or the guy who hired him. Still think Todd came into this season with a ground and pound, win with defense plan. When that blew up it threw the offense for a loop. They’re trying to change horses in the middle of the race. Hard to do when you put all your efforts into playing one way and have to change. The poor play calling is hurting bad. Not necessarily the plays themselves but when they’re used. I know everyone hates the run on first down. Likewise but the one that kills me more is the run on second and short. Perfect time for play action but what do they do? You guessed it. #RUNFORNONE

  20. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@ Marine Buc, Yeah, no question he brought in some guys that were busts, at least up to this point. I’m sure Licht knew more than anyone the risks he was taking. I liked that he brought in Jones though, even though it hasn’t worked out up to this point, and it never may. If the Bucs somehow stumble into the playoffs and Jones can play even at 80% it would be amazing. He’s one of the greatest WRs of his generation and it was worth taking that risk IMO.

With Gage, I’m not going to pass judgment on that acquisition until the end of the season. Our defense couldn’t cover him during the preseason. But since then he’s had difficulty getting separation. I suspect that his injury is more severe than the team is letting on. If it’s only a hamstring they should sit him until it heals, however long as it takes. We need him healthy if we get into the playoffs. (I realize that that is a big IF at this point). We need our WRs healthy though and Jensen back in order for the offense to be competitive once again.

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    @ BFSince96

I agree on Gage. He has certainly been hampered by a bad hamstring injury and has still had some minor contributions.

But I don’t agree with you on Julio Jones… Look what he did in Tenn last season. About the same as he has done with us this season.

At very least we should have received a deeper discount or at least a contract that had a more incentive based pay scale.

Overpaying for often injured players who are over 30 is not very smart.

  22. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@D-Rome, Licht was probably on pretty thin ice before bringing in Arians, but since then he’s had some great drafts, helped build a Super Bowl winner, and brought that team back for a second year. No way the Glazers are going to part ways with him now.

The Bucs are in need of some rebuilding and Licht has shown he’s as competent as anyone IMO to do that. His biggest challenge going forward will be to obtain a QB to take us to the promised land once Brady departs.

  23. Ash Says:

No one or two players were going to fix what’s wrong the bucs so I’m good not trading away more of the future they have who they have hopefully it works it if it doesn’t they don’t need to mortgage what’s left of the future to still not fix anything.

  24. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

@ Marine Buc, yeah, the Jones acquisition looks really bad now, but hindsight IS 20/20 after all. I’m sure the Bucs worked him out and he looked good so they felt it was worth the risk despite his recent history. It will be easier to evaluate that move after the season.

It’s difficult to know in advance how all those types of acquisitions will work out. I was strongly opposed to the acquisition of AB during the 2020 season because of his past history. But I gladly at an extra large serving of crow after he played a large role in helping us win a Super Bowl. With Jones, we’re really not going to be able to evaluate it until the end of the year. If we somehow manage to get into the playoffs and he helps us win a game or two then we’ll feel very differently about it at that point.

  25. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

^^^^^^I gladly ATE an extra large serving of crow…”

(I wish this platform had an edit feature!)

  26. Conte Piscatelli Says:

I don’t think extending the trading deadline is a good idea, unless you want a ton of roster turnover. If it were extended, say 2 weeks for example if we lose the next two games we would be sellers but right now we are a game out of being in the playoffs. Right now we could have been buyers or sellers really. In two weeks more teams I think would become sellers as their dwindling playoff chances diminish.

  27. Buczilla Says:

Licht’s 2022 free agent hall has turned out to be epically bad, but he had been golden for 3 years prior and right up until this disaster. I still trust him, but he’s got to rid us of these horrible coaches and do a bit of a player purge after the season unless by some miracle we make the playoffs. It’s apparently easy to forget that without Licht, there is no Arians, no Brady, and most definitely no kicking the chiefs a$$es in superbowl 55.

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

@Dooley hit the nail on the head when he posted that this team is not one player away from going to the Super Bowl.
So, I am glad Licht did not mortgage the future any more than it already is, by going for an expensive pass rusher.
This is not a Super Bowl Team. It just isn’t. I know it is Brady’s last year, but we will be doing well to even make the playoffs.
Only because we are in a very weak division are the playoffs even a topic of mention.
And, if we do manage somehow to get into the playoffs, anything can happen, and who knows ? But I just can not see us going all the way this year, can you ?
I think the Eagles will win the NFC and Buffalo will win the AFC.
I see no team to challenge the Eagles in the NFC, but Kansas City could very well beat Buffalo, but I would not put money on it.

  29. Da Bucs Guy Says:

It was the Glazer boys who were asking, as after the next two losses they could start the fire sale early.

  30. DungyDance Says:

    Saving money for Gronk?

  31. Kentucky Buc Says:

Should’ve went all in on some trades. What part of the last decade makes you think they’re going to rebuild and have a quality team ? Chances are slim at best. This was your last shot for awhile.

  32. Dreambig Says:

Joe, did you ever hear anyone from Buccaneer leadership saying this was an all in year? I ask because this feels the opposite and I expect there are some behind the scenes executive strategic decisions at play here. Hiring Bowles, not attempting to replace Brady while he was retired, releasing Suh and JPP, and not seriously trying to rebuild the Oline or Dline. This just seems like a intentional coast this year. Maybe not, but there is no evidence anyone in this organization is all in.

  33. Carl L Says:

Oh good . Winfield is out for the Rams. He can’t let cooper Kulp run past him with 20 seconds to go in the game this time.

  34. RSJCheapSeats Says:

We are in cap hell – I suspect that was a major reason for the lack of deals.
If you don’t think Licht has had a great run you know nothing about football.

  35. Beeej Says:

    “A. Hicks?

Fournette aside, that second group is every bit as old as the FIRST group, (serval MUCH older) we just got luckier with them

  36. Redeemer Says:

Asking price was crazy high for anyone worth getting. Rams offered two first future rounders and a third for Burns. Wasn’t enough I guess. GB also tried to pry Waller from the Raiders. I am in favor of pushing the deadline ahead a week. They added on another game after all.

  37. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Beeej

    You missed the plot buddy…

It’s not just the “age”… Read my comment one more time…

“When you overpay for older oft injured players – this is what you get”

    I said – Old and OFT INJURED…

Jones, Hicks, Perriman, Ryan, Rudolph – have all had injury issues the past season or two…

Suh has never missed a game…
JPP missed very little action during his career (even after he blew his hand off)
AB – the only injury history was his brain.
Gronk – again. had some injuries but was always a warrior.
Fornette – was in the prime of his career and mainly had attitude issues at the Jags…

  38. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Suh would play the rest of the season for 3 million and an apology.

Tretter would play for 2 million and an apology.

So it would be very simple to sign these 2 players and you would see resulting improvement immediately , or just keep embarassing yourself and looking stupid Jason Licht.

  39. Defense Rules Says:

BA’s Red Pen … ‘Selling of your players for draft picks is stupid. You don’t get better getting rid of good football players.’

Normally I’d agree with you, but there is 1 exception IMO: when you’re in such terrible salary CAP position for the coming years that you know you could never afford to re-sign certain players whose contracts will be up. Some of the players who got traded by other teams this year fell into that precise category.

I’m convinced that most JBFers have turned a blind eye towards how bad our 2023 salary CAP situation already is. Bucs currently rank #31 for 2023; the only team below us is the New Orleans Saints. Just for reference, Bucs are over TWICE as bad off as the #30 team, the Jags. Spotrac estimates that the Bucs adjusted 2023 salary CAP (includes 2022 rollover) will be $221,057,584 … say $221.1 mil (they’re usually pretty close). Unfortunately, we already owe $269.7 mil for 2023 contracts. Add in a tiny bit of Dead CAP ($0.3 mil) and it turns out that we’re ALREADY $49.0 mil OVER next year’s salary CAP.

But wait, that was THE GOOD NEWS. Now for the BAD NEWS. First, that MINUS $49.0 mil is for ONLY 37 players (active roster now calls for 55, but the salary CAP is computed on the Top-51 contracts, so we still have to pay for another 14 to figure out how far behind we REALLY are). The REAL number is anyone’s guess at this point, but it’s a lot worse than what we’re seeing right now.

And now for the REALLY BAD NEWS. Of those 37 players, FIVE really won’t be playing for us next year because their contracts are up this season, but we’ll STILL be paying for them … because of salary CAP shenanigans (Void contracts).

o Tom Brady … $35.1 mil owed next season
o Lavonte David … $6.9 mil owed next season
o Akiem Hicks … $4.9 mil owed next season
o Julio Jones … $3.5 mil owed next season
o Will Gholston … $2.4 mil owed next season

Add all those together, and they total to $52.8 mil … money owed for THIS YEAR’s performances. More bad news BTW is that most of the remaining 32 players who will be here have already had their contracts ‘renegotiated’ so we won’t get any relief there. And yes BA’s Red Pen, we could have a fire sale of some of those who are under contract, but the odds are very high that we’d have to eat much of their contract before shipping them on to another team.

So ya, for all those who’ve been enamored with JL’s negotiating prowess, wait until next year. There’s also a very good chance that Todd Bowles will still be our HC, because no top coach (like Sean Payton) is gonna touch this team with a 10-foot pole.

  40. LakelandSteve Says:

To hell with when the trade deadline is. The Bucs brain trust isn’t all in so why should the players be? The Bucs could have made a move for a player that could have helped us but didn’t. That tells you everything you need to know.

  41. BucsFanSince76 Says:

But we must also remember that the salary cap increase is tied to club revenues at around 48% to create the cap. Revenues are way up in the NFL by any metric this year , so you could easily see the Cap increase by 30 million or more next season.

  42. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

    Agreed.

The only contract left to restructure is LT – D. Smith…

    The party is over.

  43. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … The fact that Donovan’s contract wasn’t renegotiated actually has me concerned. Was it because (1) Bucs refused to renegotiate it because they want to move on from Donovan as quickly as they can; (2) Donovan decided that he’s had enough (especially with his buddy Marpet gone) and he refused to renegotiate; or (3) the 2 sides just couldn’t agree on numbers. Smith & his agent may not see a future here, or may have decided that they can get a much better contract elsewhere.

  44. Defense Rules Says:

BucsFanSince76 … ‘you could easily see the Cap increase by 30 million or more next season.’

I love optimists. Keep hope alive, whether it’s warranted or not.

  45. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

I believe the Bucs are hedging their bets…

If they restructure D. Smith they are stuck with a very expensive LT that is slightly below average and aging quickly.

They would be wise to just ride out the current contract and use another high draft pick to replace him soon…

  46. Listnfrmafar Says:

Kentucky, not only do they run on second & short, they run a reverse to the gimpy J. Jones!
