“Bitter” Loss To Rams Fueled Unretirement For Tom Brady

April 19th, 2022

Loss motivates return.

It seems Tom Brady may have stayed retired if the Bucs had gotten blown out by the Rams, or the Bucs won the Super Bowl.

In a sitdown with BSPN, Brady tells Tom VanHaaren the way the Bucs came back to tie the playoff game against the Rams only to choke it away peeved him off to the point that he could not have that be his lasting football memory to millions worldwide.

“And last year was a very bitter ending to a season and we’ve got to make a lot of corrections to try to improve and put ourselves in a better position to succeed moving forward.”

Brady also added that his body told him he could still play and that he has a fire to win still burning in his soul.

Joe found it funny when Brady said that he believed he was physically fit enough to return. You mean his body didn’t change during the 40 (?) days of retirement?

Still, Joe is beyond happy Brady is back. Look how close the Bucs were to peering into the abyss and launching the Blaine Gabbert era of BucsBall.

I watched this game on youtube yesterday. We should have won that game, to many penalties and mistakes early in the game cost us.

  2. tampabayallday Says:

Running the ball more would’ve won us that game. Lenny was on fire the first two plays and they just abandoned the run after that. We struggled the rest of the game.

  3. Steven007 Says:

Well, he retired first. So it would seem that the bitter loss to the Rams fueled his retirement initially. And then that same bitter loss fueled his unretirement? I mean I understand the narrative of it fueling his unretirement, I guess I just don’t understand why that same bitter ending would have also fueled his initial retirement.

  4. DmanTX Says:

That Rams game went ugly pretty fast and I had a very difficult time watching it the first time thru. No way I want to relive it. That being said, the Bucs should watch that tape for sure and learn from it hopefully next time we are better prepared and healthier and beat the snot out of them.

  5. godlovesbucs Says:

The Rams game was rough. We were lucky to even be in it at the end. We

  6. Buczilla Says:

Cool, I’m just happy he’s back and that I can put my musings of Trask having an unexpectedly good year to bed for another year.

  7. Iistnfrmafar Says:

Steven, the answer to your question, BA us gone. That was a poorly coached game on both sides of the ball oh and let’s not forget the special teams debacle. That wasn’t the week to go to the movies.

  8. Dooley Says:

Good because our offense stunk up the place the entire first half against the Rams and those 40 second drives that dont move the ball and puts our defense back on the field too fast isn’t complimentary football. Also, what I’d love to see under Bowles is a dedication to the run game, no matter the score because there have been wins & losses where we completely assisted opposing defenses render our offense 1 dimensionally. Can’t key/lock in on anything as a defender if you’ve got to account for everything.

  9. SPARKY Says:

Brady was upset at Bowles and Leftwich because they spend the week of the Rams game talking to their agents and other teams about head coaching jobs instead of the football game. It wasn’t hard to see in the first half that neither the offense or defense were ready to go. And the defense was really screwed up at the end.

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Blitzing Stafford had not worked well all game, so what did we do, with the game on the line ?
That loss really hurt because not only were we at home, but we fought our way back into the game, only to leave the best receiver in the NFL one on one, with the game on the line.

  11. Casual Observer Says:

Sparky and Chris. You both make great points. That long pass play was a plain botch. It is true that the O bumbled a bit and the D helped change things in the second half. And TB was spectacular in the comeback. I had forgotten about the lost time interviewing for jobs. May well have been a factor. This year we have a chance to “get it right” – again.

  12. 2022 Year of the GOAT RETURN Says:

OMG we cant allow ourselves to be out coached, the necessary adjustments need to be made during the game…. we need to beat the saints and the rams…. hopefully ourt coaching will be up to it…. they have had our number.

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

Funny! I seem to recall a highly ineffective offense putting up 3 points through one half of football.
One play did not make that game.
There was a missed FG, a kick out of bounds, and more than one fumble by the Rams as they were certain to score.
A valiant effort to come back and a disappointing play that allowed LA to get in FG range. Would we have won in OT? Who knows? We didn’t lose because of that ONE play.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Steven007

Exactly…I think the way we lost to the Rams fueled both his retirement and unretiremenrt……

Nevertheless, he is back and he is, as always, motivated.

  15. Trey Long Says:

Passing defense was a problem last year.
That has got to be better.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

I’d love to hear what Brady had / has to say about the way he called the defense and the way his defense “played” during the final 30 second sequence. Hey Todd — ever heard of Cooper Kupp? For one of the smartest men in the NFL, that was surely a dumbtarded moment.

  17. Buc_Da_World Says:

Everyone keeps talking about that last defensive play. How about we were missing Wirfs, Godwin, and AB. This seems to have been forgotten. That was a significant blow our offense and we still could have one the game.

  18. teacherman777 Says:

If Lenny ran the ball 20 times we would have won.

    Bottom line.

Bruce screaming at Brady was the last straw for Bruce.

Thank God we chose Tom over Bruce.

Now we just need a mauling LG. Ask Marpet to stay in shape in case we have O-line injuries during the season.

We need to get Honey Badger too.

    Go Bucs!

  19. SB~LV Says:

Bitter failed scheme to be involved with the Dolphins

  20. Pewter941 Says:

Our receiving core was depleted, if we had Brown or Godwin, we would have won that game. Thats why I think we still need to draft another receiver, the addition of Gage isnt enough.

  21. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I hope one of the areas the Bucs fix is the defense. In the Rams game, our offense really struggled in the first half, but I am less concerned about them. Our defense needs to stand tall when the game is on the line. I was at that game and knew in my gut the Rams were going to go down the field and score. I know Brady realizes the importance of a good defense. We have the bullets on the offensive side of the ball. We need more playmakers and depth on defense. I know you can’t count on rookies to make a big impact in their first season, but they can make a big difference later in the year after they’ve gained some experience. With all that said, I hope this draft is heavy on defensive players. Coach them up and have them ready for the playoffs.

  22. Duane Says:

That game had Playoff Lenny written all over it. He had a few games to rest and was ready to go. He could have helped us control the clock better, and he is a better option running for his life that TB12.

  23. brooks Says:

    Brady hates to lose

  24. LOL Says:

Thank goodness we dont have to roll with Gabbert and Trashk this year.

  25. GOB Says:

They clearly weren’t ready to go. You could see it all over Brady’s face. As was said before, it was bad comp football. Don’t bellyache about injuries. I didn’t hear anyone on here lamenting the fact that KC started an arena league O line in the superbowl. Brady didn’t play well until desperation time. Gronk played like crap, and the backup wide outs couldn’t step up. The way Brady acted during the game, screamed a bad week of practice. That’s on the dear departed leader. Others are correct also about inexplicably abandoning the run. I’m not sure if BL panicked, or Brady just continued to check out of running calls. Brady, and the offensive approach are as much to blame as the defense.

  26. SufferingSince76 Says:

Thank God the draft is next week. Maybe we can focus on something else. And maybe, just maybe, the NE and NO fans will go back to their team’s site and nauseate them with their drivel for a while.

  27. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

    Bucsfanman Says:
“One play did not make that game.”
    .
    .

You are correct there. Bowles blitzed like crazy for the first quarter and a half, against the quarterback known to be the best at countering the blitz, and the Rams jumped out to a huge lead. There were a bunch of plays involved.

Also would have been nice to score a TD in the first half, also. It is a team game.

  28. Steven M. Says:

Could they won won with the run game, better play in the 1st
half against the Rams yes. These are all what ifs.
But the realty was the game was possibly ost from that one important play. The game was tied. If you didn’t allow the Rams to score you would at least had a chance. Either of the 2 scenarios which occured I’m told with the largest coaching staff in the NFL in unacceptable.
Either single covering Cooper Kupp or as BA said there was a “miscommunication and 2 people that were supposed to blitz didn’t”.

  29. Mackey Says:

The Bucs lost to the Rams in the playoffs because of the lousy defensive plan by their defensive co-ordinator. That defensive co-ordinator is now the Bucs head coach. Oh, the irony.

  30. John Collins Says:

Lot of good insight here and with Brady it usually comes to the end of the game sometimes with a wtf play like the perfect season ending play

  31. Jerry Says:

That… and the Miami deal blowing up.

  32. Esteban85 Says:

Have to agree with the sentiment of running the dadgum football. Under Arians we never seemed to grasp the need to run the ball to give our D a breather. Yes it is great to score quick and pile up points but it sure does suck when that doesn’t work and we hand the ball over with a gassed D.

  33. Esteban85 Says:

But I do not want to watch that Rams game ever again. I watched the last few minutes of it and it was gut wrenching

  34. Listnfrmafar Says:

The Bucs had success running early and continued to try, the Rams quickly adjusted and shut it down, go back and watch. The game is 60 minutes long and the teams most prepared to play 60 min usually win. Everything that happened prior to the final series is irrelevant. In that situation it came down to which team was more prepared. McVay saw confusion and went hurry up, the rest is history. Not the week to GO TO THE MOVIES! The underlined problem Brady recognized. No one knows if Bucs would win in OT but they sure as heck had the momentum on their side. Belichick teams play 60 min and beyond, they won 6 SB’s proving that. The team wasn’t prepared in ALL 3 phases. FYI Pinion kicked 2 out of bounds and Brady was beaten like a Persian rug that game.

  35. Brent Clark Says:

Four issues with that game, first Tristan Wirfs out of the game, second missed field goal, third 3 unwarranted IMHO 15 yard PF’s and one possession! So yeah TB12 is right we really got another shot at the ring in 22 LFG !!!!

  36. vinny from vermont Says:

    Question of the Day:

If we could somehow manage to win the SB this year,
might Brady return for a forth year just for the oppurtunity to win SB’s Back to Back?

  37. Vadertime Says:

I watched that whole, gut-wrenching game and it wasn’t the offense. Just too many penalties and stupid mistakes. In the end the defense was unable to stop the Rams. Just a heart-breaking game.

  38. Armen Says:

The Rams fumbled 4 times and missed a FG. Otherwise, it’s a blowout.
