BSPN: Bucs One Of Four Teams After Marshall

April 14th, 2010

Nice little bombshell dropped by BSPN’s Ed Werder via Adam Schefter.

Directly conflicting information posted a short while ago by Stephen Holder of the St. Peterburg Times, it appears the Bucs were one of the final four teams to make a play for troubled Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall, so reports BSPN.

Marshall was shipped to the Dolphins this morning for two second round draft picks.

The BSPN.com piece is written by Schefter but the information about the final four teams attributed to Werder.

Miami was hot after Marshall, as was Seattle. Tampa Bay showed some interest, and even the Jets considered making a play for Marshall before making their deal for Holmes, according to sources.

Well now. Holder — who Joe has absolutely nothing against; he seems like a fine fellow — channeled his colleague The Mad Twitterer and all but scolded fans in his earlier post that there was no way the Bucs would make a play for Marshall, even invoking the phrase “told you.”

Either Werder got conned or whoever Holder’s source is at One Buc Palace played him terribly.

we are one of the best teams at almost getting good players if that counts for anything

Our front office consists of one dung eater after another!

Joe is working his phone trying to get a sense of who is accurate. Here’s what Joe knows:

    1) Bucs have every reason to deny interest (blows their theory of building through the draft).

    2) Why would the Broncos lie about the teams they talked to?

Feel free to do the math there folks.

I can just hear them now: “We’re not cheap, we tried to get Marshall. We even offered Denver more compensation. …Really, we did!” Blah, blah, blah — sounds just like what they said about “almost” getting Hainesworth.

Im not sure it blows their plan as stated, since Dom recently said he would not hesitate to pull the trigger on a trade if it would help the team. I think only FA is totally forbidden, except for low costs scrubs.

If they were going to trade for an older player, that would blow the theory. Not Marshall though. Or Holmes.

Since our second is much higher that the Dolphins, the deal should have been easier for the bucs. Most likely they did contact Denver, found out what they wanted, then gagged on the 47 million dollar contract.

Its not that it is contrary to the stated plan, rather its contrary to the real unstated and denied plan – i.e to spend as little as possible.

Bucs are really good at just missing out on good players. It’s ok… not acquiring good players IS the plan.

    Joe,

A tad off topic but just throwing it out there. Would you agree with packaging a pick and Ruud to move up into the 1st round and take Weatherspoon? Making the first 3 selections a possibility of Suh/McCoy, Waetherspoon and Thomas/Benn?

At this point, it doesn’t matter anymore.
    Come on draft…

Not sure if other teams view Ruud as highly as the Bucs do.

Not picking up Marshall officially confirms letting AB go was a huge mistake….no doubt we will now be using one of our first 3 picks on WR

  11. TJ TIllman Says:

There is no one at one Bucs place that know what they are doing at all Please bring in new coaches and GM and Owners that is what I want for Christmas

  12. bucfanjeff Says:

It was a given that the Bucs were going to address the WR position with one of the two 2nd round picks. You may see both go for WR now and I think at the least, one 2nd and the 3rd.

I’m so dissappointed we didn’t get Marshall. He is a top 3 WR in the league. A 2nd this year was fine. But a 2nd next year might have been too much. I don’t think so, but who knows what their thinking is at One Buc Place. If it is only because we didn’t want to pay him the contract. That is sad. It shames me to be a fan of Tampa, if we had a chance to get him and refused to pay him top money, considering he is a top WR. Thats weak and they better have an amazing draft to make up for their loses this offseason!!!

  14. big007hed Says:

The Bucs front office screwed the pooch on not getting Marshall, using “the plan” as an excuse for not going after one of the best WRs in the league is unbelievably stupid!!!! They have 2 2nd round picks this year and could’ve done the same package as the Dolphins but still have a 2nd round pick this year since it is such a “deep” draft…. I have backed most of their plays until this week by missing on Holmes and Marshall……

Denying being in the mix allows them to:
    1) Avoid being viewed as hypocritical in that out of one side of the mouth they say build through the draft and out of the other lets sign a high profile veteran reciever.
*2) allows them to avoid the appearance of being incompetent in trade and free agent negotiations adding another swing and a miss or close but no cigar to their list of accomplishemnts.
