For those who paid rapt attention to the three worthless preseason games the Bucs played this summer, one will notice the struggles of the second-team offense.
Let’s just say Blaine Gabbert and company are not frightening too many defensive coordinators.
Now some folks really get worked up worrying about the backup quarterback or the reject from a horrible team catching passes out of the backfield or… well, you get the drift.
So late Saturday night after the Bucs beat the Texans to wrap up worthless preseason football season, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians put it all in perspective.
When asked if he is losing sleep over the lack of production from his offensive backups, particularly the second-team offense, Arians quipped, “Not really because I hope they don’t play.”
That’s all that needs to be said.
Now bring on the Cowboys! It’s real football season and Joe is stoked!

The authors of this site should check each others posts or use a word processing program with grammar checking. What does “Let’s just Blaine Gabbert” mean? How about “Let’s just say, Blaine Gabbert”. Since you guys are ex-newspaper men, maybe you counted on your editor. I leave Ira out of this, his pieces are well written.

Basically I’m just pointing this team is about 34 to 38 players deep.
Inserting a back up here and there to play alongside starters is not an issue.
The only thing that sucks is Gabbert.
Track is not ready yet.
But that’s the reality of almost every NFL team if you need to play your back up more than 3 games,
you’re screwed

On the matter of backups. We’ve seen what the backups can do when one of starters goes down. They perform very well. The problem is this is a team sport. In the preseason, when a backup goes in, he’s playing with backups at all the other positions. It’s unlikely during the regular season we’ll have to field an all backup team.

I wonder if the backups on teams with bad starters are better than the ones on good teams because they have a better shot at making the team?

What PSL just said. The fact that that has to be explained is mind boggling. You think Arians is going to shake in his boots if Stinnie has to play? What about if Brate has to start? Or if Lenny has to be the bell cow because ROJo is hurt. The bucs have great depth all across the board so if Johnson has to step in for godwin as he did last year, the bucs will be fine.

To be clear, you should have included an apostrophe (other’s) in the sentence above because it shows ownership. However, in the end I agree with you, but not here. I doubt the two owner/writers have time to monitor each other on a 24/7 job. I’m guessing one writes while the other sleeps.
And yes, Ira is a good writer, but his articles so infrequent they have time to be edited. The number one error with writers is the omission of conjunctions. The brain has a tendency to fill them in when they’re not there.
I do it all time (see). To make matters worse I’ve had editors miss them as well.
Sometimes I read this site for the humorous errors from posters. Makes me wonder if some made it through grammar school, but I always let the Joe twins off the hook.

Truth is Gabbert had zero highlight plays. I cut him a little slack in game three. The center was even worse. But Gabbert as the starter is a scary thought. Trask looks like a very good future #2. But backing up Tom is the teams biggest weakness by far. Coach and GM should be watching the waiver wire or trade for a respectable experienced #2. If Brady goes down season over.

Ideally Trask gets a lot of learning from Brady & the coaches & he isn’t forced into position until then. As far as the rest of teams second & third stringers you better get better quick because they will be additional cuts & pickups will be taken where other teams have let more seasoned players go.

To all of you that keep calling Trask a backup quarterback shows me yall don’t know football. What give you the idea or the proof that he’s a backup quarterback at best that’s what I want to know ??? We don’t know how Trask will look if he plays with the starters. He played better than all of the top 5 picks and he played against better teams with lesser talent the only players he had was Pitts and a average receiver with a below average running game. I guess yall looking for legends on other teams and than try to claim them as a buc lol 😆 !! If the bucs don’t develop Trask then Tampa is where young quarterbacks careers come and die , and all yall will have to apologize to Jamies, Freeman, King, Dilfer, Testaverde, no excuses. If Brady goes down we have enough talent to win regardless who the quarterback is . That’s when you have to be a good coach like what the eagles did when Wentz went down!!!

who appreciated preseason: JTS gotta a chance to knock of the rust, Tyler Johnson got a chance to redeem himself. Kyle Trask proved he was better than Grif, etc. etc., etc.
