Jason Licht: Bruce Arians Is The Key

August 30th, 2021

Bucs GM lauds Bucs coach.

For Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, there is one big reason why he was able to bring back all 22+1 starters from a Super Bowl-winning team.

And that one reason is Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Last week when Licht appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio during the station’s training camp special with Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller, co-hosts of “Movin’ the Chains,” Miller, a former NFL quarterback, heaped praise on Licht for building a culture where players wanted to return to.

Miller added from his experience in the NFL, that’s a rare occurrence that so many players would pass up other opportunities to stay with the Bucs. Miller said that demonstrates what a special atmosphere and culture Licht has built at One Buc Palace.

Licht refused to take any credit for it. In fact, he said the main creditor is one man. And that is Arians.

“I will give all the credit to Bruce here,” Licht said. “He is the captain of the team, the locker room, the players. He does an amazing job of keeping egos in check and coaches everybody the same whether that is Tom [Brady] or the sixth receiver. Nobody is immune.

“As tough as he is on the team and can be, he also knows when to dial it back and knows how to treat a veteran. And veterans I feel like, the Ndamukong Suhs, the Gronks, the Tom Bradys, he knows when they may not want to take a day off but he knows when to give them a day off. And I think they really appreciate that.

“He’s a great combination of new school and old school. That is the best way that I can describe him.”

You can see how the players have respect for Arians. What may not be as clear is, when players have respect for their coaches, they are much more open-minded and often heed what their coaches tell them.

If a guy has tuned out a coach, it’s hard to coach the guy up. Bucs players are not that way with Arians and his staff. And we’ve seen over the past couple of years how much coaching matters.

And JL deserves credit for coaxing BA out of the booth and back onto the sideline. He cashed in on the relationship they formed while with the Cardinals. The power of two then brought Brady and the rest is history. What a beautiful symphony it has been, when will I wake up?

If you were going to break things down by HC, DC, OC …

HC: Won the Super Bowl, all coaches (-1) and 22 starters returned. That says a lot about the man and the leader.

DC: Bowles deserves the credit for the defense.

OC: We’re unsure how good Leftwich is as a OC. How much is BA, BL, TB12? The good news is it doesn’t matter. The Bucs have all 3so their success will continue.

But I was told the coach wasn’t good. Besides the fact he took the colts on a run. Quick turned the cardinals into a winner. Then quick turned the Bucs into champions. People will trash the team and coaches because a player can’t do his part smh.

Jason Licht is a very humble guy. He never takes credit for what he does. It’s always Arians, Brady or Mike Greenberg. I think they are all a great group of guys.

  5. PSL Bob Says:

Licht reflects positively on the whole organization, from the top on down. TEAM. They largely leave egos at the door and focus on the overall good of the organization. For example, BA is constantly giving credit to BL, Bowles, and other coaches. Talk about a winning culture!

  6. Brian Says:

They truly have seemed to become one hell of an organization. I truly hope this lasts a long time but I’m going to enjoy the hell out of this ride right now.

Makes you sort of pine and miss the Lovie days don’t it?

Jason Licht brought Arians here. Arians brought Bowles and Leftwhich.I think the team Licht put toget here brought Brady here. So Licht definitely deserves accolades for sure. Signing Antonio Brown was brave. Signing Gronk was brave as well.

BA, the best stale biscuit in the NFL baby!

I credit the combination of BA and JL for finishing the job of team building that Licht had begun previously. They emphasized not only talent but character (including the right behavior for you know who last year). They had already set the stage for TB to come on board and complete the culture turn-around and take the franchise to the promised land!

  11. Jason Says:

We know how players improve, by practicing drills and such, but how do coaches improve?
What a great question to ask BA hint, hint. LoL.

Remember when some idiot on this page used to call him “Coach Stale Biscuit?”
