Champions, Yes. Hardly Perfect.

May 16th, 2021

Seeks improvement.

If you think Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians is going to let his players coast through an easy mandatory minicamp and training camp this summer, you have a major surprise coming.

After the second day of Bucs rookie minicamp yesterday, Arians said going through tape of last season’s games, he saw many, many mistakes. Just because the Bucs won the Super Bowl didn’t make him forget them.

“We had to go back and look at all the things that we did wrong as well as the things we did right,” Arians said. “We won a world championship. But we did a lot of really bad things on tape that we had to fix.

“Not necessarily on the field, but mentally.”

So how does Arians across to the players that, hey man, you won a Super Bowl but damn you made mistakes? That might be a tough sell.

It’s a good thing Arians has ever the perfectionist, driving his offense, guys like park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

And there’s Jason Pierre-Paul on defense, who knows all too well that a championship one season means squat a few months later.

Derrick Brooks dives into the Bucs’ schedule.

TAMPA TWO is talkin’ schedule with Brooks and JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman. The brilliant insight is presented by Converged Technology Professionals. More fun from The Identity Tampa Bay & Joe.

I don’t think it’s a tough sell at all. Tell them if we don’t fix these mistakes, we won’t win a second one.

  2. Ash Says:

I don’t think it’s a tough sell every team in the NFL is looking to get better the bucs are not any different even though they won the SB definitely don’t see Tom Brady Mr seven rings saying well last year is good enough

  3. Netwalker Says:

It’s an easy sell. Simply point out to players that if he, Arians, can see the mistakes on film, so too can apposing coaches. If they don’t fix the mistakes, other teams will exploit them. Case closed.

I think it’s easy for guys to rest on their laurels. Having Brady will be the difference maker. Go Bucs!

  5. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

I agree, Brady, JPP, and David all know better; they all know how hard it is to get there. They will be ready to slap the younger players with some reality if they show any signs of relaxing.

I hope these leaders push for the hardest practices that have ever taken place at OBP; with veterans days off of course 😎

  6. August 1976 Buc Says:

Skip Bayless talks about the Psycho Tom side of Brady, well it will be seen more this year, complacency, no do not think so. Let the Magic carpet ride begin, GO BUCS!!!! 20-0!!!!

Brady won’t allow it, forget Arians. It was Brady who got everyone’s act together after the bye. It’ll be Brady they listen to. Arians is a nice cheerleader with a deeply flawed offense. Thankfully for y’all, it’s been fixed.

  8. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Oline did a great job last year protecting Brady. The losses came when Brady was pressured. If Bucs stay healthy in the trenches, they’ll have a shot at another Post season.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Brady will NOT tolerate complacent slackers, even less so that Arians.

  10. Ben green Says:

Pelsbucs61 makes a great point. Running the ball well also takes pressure off Brady. He was one of the best at moving in the pocket. That’s long gone. He now needs near perfect protection to be effective.

This isn’t Mahomes and the 2020 Chiefs thinking they could skate into Tampa for another ring. A post I saw somewhere that said “Run it back was the Chiefs. We’re going to Buc it up!” Lol. I like that.

You have the ability to be all time great is an easy sale.

They know that they have stuff to clean up. I mean as late as the week 15 game at Atlanta during the first half, we did not even look like a playoff team. They surely have room to improve.

  14. Doctor Stroud Says:

As Survivor-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominick would say, the team has to maintain the eye of the tiger. That’s why they can’t hold back in improving, particularly Special Teams. As they defend the title, they need to keep a burning heart. The search is over when the Bucs hoist (and then proceed to toss) another Lombardi trophy.

Tough sell for who? Not Brady. Not Evans. Not Suh. Not JPP. Not AB. Not David. Not Angry Red.

Who is it a tough sell for?

  16. JeffreyLane77 Says:

BA can just show them game tape from the Bears game when they made Trubisky look like a future hall of famer.

Of the five losses last season 2 to Aints, Rims, bears and K.C
Got revenge on Chefs in Super Bowl and the other 3 are on this
seasons schedule… there’s your frigging motivation!

    20-0 GO BUCS GO!

I am not sure that I agree with the point that Brady needs near perfect protection to be effective. Not every play of 40 to 45 drop backs is going to have near perfect protection.

I feel like Jameis Winston wanted and some fans demanded that near perfection offensive line protection in the past. They wanted 3 to 3.5 seconds every drop back.

Instead, Brady told his offensive lineman that it is their job to stop the guy for 2.3 seconds. That is just basic minimum fair protection. During that time, it is his job to make a decision including just getting rid of the ball. That 2.3 seconds should in my opinion work better this year with the addition of Giovanni Bernard.

Brady is effective because of his processing skills. Viva la difference. Let all these teams get these mobile quarterbacks. I love our immobile Brady.
