“He Has Everything At His Discretion Underneath”

May 16th, 2020

“Byron, just let Tommy read.”

A Hall of Fame running back weighed in this week on the changes coming to the Buccaneers’ offense with savvy legend Tom Brady replacing a turnover-happy backup in Tampa.

LaDanian Tomlinson was yapping a lot of Xs and Os about the Bucs on NFL Network and was adamant that lost offseason time will eliminate of lot of what would have been Brady teaching Bucs players and coaches what he likes to run — and how it looks on the field. However, Tomlinson said there’s nothing to fear with having Brady in Bucco Bruce Arians’ deep-ball, vertical system.

Why? Because he’ll understand the reads and what the offensive gives him.

“It’s really predicated on the quarterback a lot of the times. You know, quarterbacks read high to low in vertical system offenses. And with Tom Brady, he’s smart enough to know that a lot of times those vertical passing lanes, they’re just clearing people out of there. Those receivers are running clearing people out and he has everything at his discretion underneath. And that’s how Tom has played a lot of the time throughout his career.”

Joe’s real curious to see with whom Brady has chemistry. That kind of thing can be instant — or it can take time.

With this short offseason, it’s very hard to predict Brady’s favorite target outside of Rob Gronkowski. It could be anyone. Heck, if it’s Justin Watson in training camp, then you better believe you’ll see a lot of Watson on the field. Remember how Arians said Brady will be picking his receivers.

As for QBs reading high-to-low with Arians, as Tomlinson noted, Trent Dilfer gave a great explanation of what Brady will deal with.

Why is it that I think Brady would have absolutely loved Adam Humphries……

Strange if his new favorite target becomes Scotty Miller…..

  2. Youngbucs Says:

Thank you LT some common sense!!!!!!

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

Justin Watson will be lucky to make the team

  4. SOEbuc Says:

Brady not being able to work with the QB whisperer system is the dumbest thing that I hear all the time. You think Brady and BA, BL, and Tom aren’t face timing all day creating a way to work out a sick passing scheme.

  5. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

I imagine Brady and his offensive coaches are selecting plays for them to work on as soon as there is a training camp (or an open park) so he can work through any technical issues with the receivers. Being able to signal changes at the line will be what makes Brady the most dangerous as long as our receivers end up where they were supposed to be.

  6. SOEbuc Says:

I don’t know what the NFL rules are. I have a feeling he’s been throwing with our receiver’s, just some place not a public park.

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

SOE, same here. Rule number 1 in covid-19 training. No cell phones. No social media.

  8. Pewter Power Says:

I can tell you it doesn’t matter if they have one week of training camp to get on same page as receivers, it took Winston 2 years to get on page with d jack

Evans never had an issue with Glennon, mccown or Winston he won’t have one with Brady and neither will Godwin, he’s not an amateur like Winston and thrown to enough receivers to know how to adjust quickly

    Dewey Selmon

That’s rediculous about viral. I highly doubt Goodell and all the NFL owners are gonna stop players and the NFL market cus they couldn’t stand to lose a nickel. Brady in the park was just a huge media bang. F-you Jane.

This was the glaringly OBVIOUS weakness in the previous starter’s game.
The notion that Brady will struggle with Arian’s offense is such a patently weak argument. A 20-year veteran, multiple SB, MVP winning QB is going to have a hard time finding open receivers? Really?! Oh, and with his favorite TE target for the previous 8 seasons?!
    Stop with the nonsense!

Brady’s new favorite “underneath” target will Tyler Johnson. I doubt Scotty Miller makes the 53 cut unless can contribute more on special teams.

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

Why are people saying Scotty Miller and Justin Watson wont make the team? Lol. Who is taking their spot? Do you think the Bucs will only carry 3 WRs?

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Hah. Yeah don’t know if Scotty’s even gonna step a foot on the field. Am looking for Tom to make Tyler Johnson into Godwin 2.0 in the slot.

  14. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

Miller, when he’s healthy was in the punt returner rotation and Watson was a gunner on punts and kickoffs. Laugh as you may, but punt gunner kept both Watson and Ryan Smith employed last year and they actually were pretty decent.

  15. Sumosam Says:

Scotty Miller is the new Wes Welker. Just watch and see. He was drafted here for that reason.

  16. Brandon Says:

Wow. Such stupidity. Scotty Miller must be the new Humphries or Welker because he’s a small white guy. What brutal ignorance on whomever says that’s part. For those that don’t see anything passed skin color or size, Miller is nothing like Humphries or Welker. He is a speed receiver that keeps a D honest, not a tough, gritty, slower slot receiver. If you had to compare him to anyone it would that he is a DeSean Jackson-type. Undersized and can fly. Why can’t we stop with the stupid racial stereotyping? How hard would that be?

Brady won’t have to be told repeatedly “You never go broke putting money in the bank”, he’s mastered that. Montana has been open for 2 weeks, just sayin’…

It’s going to be a thing Joe, we all can’t wait to see who atom gels with.

  19. TOM Says:

    Edelman!

  20. Daniel Says:

I would believe as training camp approaches and travel restrictions are lifted we’ll see at least a few more free agent signings.

  21. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Scotty Miller has killer speed. We will see how durable he is. I can’t wait for this season!!! Watson & Miller both will make the team. They could be x factors especially if any WR’s get hurt,,,
