“Have More Fun”

Tom Brady channels GMC

From the day former Bucs stud Gerald McCoy arrived in Tampa in 2010, he was doomed.

A third-overall draft pick, GMC was supposed to be the next Warren Sapp. With glowing endorsements in their ears, Bucs fans expected if not demanded GMC to play and act just like Sapp.

Sapp would woof — oh, would he woof — and holler and boast and kick over pylons and stomp and snort and go nose-to-nose with coaches who had the balls/stupidity to call him out.

GMC? He helped guys off the ground.

Where Sapp was an in-your-face personality, GMC was more like, “Hey, you feel like watching Batman?” GMC once said, in a less-than-rousing pregame speech, that his teammates should just go have some fun.

And there are Bucs fans who despise GMC to this day for his good-guy, clean-cut, family-man nature, even though he became one of the best defensive tackles in team history, reaching six-straight Pro Bowls.

A reason some fans never warmed to GMC is exactly why park-violating, home-invading quarterback Tom Brady is in Tampa Bay.

Who said? Jay Feely said.

The former NFL and Tampa Bay Storm kicker, and Jesuit High School graduate, is tight with Brady. The two developed a friendship when they played for Michigan and have remained boys since.

Feely also played a full season for Bucco Bruce Arians with the 2013 Arizona Cardinals.

Now a CBS Sports analyst, Feely appeared on “Good Morning Football,” seen and heard on NFL Network on weekday mornings, and he explained Brady came to the Bucs for a variety of reasons. One is to have fun tossing the ball all over the place in Arians’ offense and firing passes to so many strong targets.

“He will be with a guy in Bruce Arians offense who is going to be aggressive, he’s going to go down the field a lot more than [Patriots offensive coordinator] Josh McDaniels did,” said Feely. “I think Tom is probably excited about that. He’s excited about the receivers. It’s the best receiving core he’s had since probably 2007, when you had Randy Moss in his prime and Wes Welker — and maybe it is the best receiving core he’s every had when you look at it cumulatively when you add Gronk to that mix.

“It will be interesting to see how he succeeds down in Tampa and how he and Bruce Arians put that offense together. I think Tom is excited about having some autonomy in that offense — the ability to have a part and a say in that offense.”

Well now, there’s yet another hint that Brady has shot-calling power with the Bucs. This coming from perhaps his best friend.

To Joe, the biggest issue with Brady will be to keep him upright.

Some believe as the weather turned cold last year in New England, Brady’s long-ball arm began to wither. If this is not just a coincidence, then Joe hopes we have a late winter coming.

Also, Joe is curious if Brady will be held to the same standard as GMC for the nerve to have fun?

Oh My why is there a Panther, whoops sorry a Cowboy’s player on a Bucs site?

This guy is gone.. No more …

    Good player Yes

    Great player No

    HOF No

GMC maybe be liked as a good player But Some Fans call him
    Out for his downside

    6 ProBowls. (Popularity contest)

  2. Lamarcus Says:

I won’t. Brady start/starts “acting” like GMC he will be garbage in my books

We don’t need that stuff anymore and I rather put up with Winsterception if this is the case

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Winning is having fun…….in order to have real fun, you have to win. I think GMC simply didn’t realize that.

  4. Bruce Blahak Says:

Pro Bowls define him as all timer for Bucs? Baloney. They vote on sacks and stats. A loser who led in losing and infested every team with is lackadaisical approach. Selmon was a nice guy too but played hard and had grit. This fraud is not even close to people like David Logan, Dave Pear, even Culpepper.

  5. Bruce Blahak Says:

Again. Find some new stories on actual Bucs! WinSTUNNED, Mr Softy, WinSTUNNED, Ice Cream Man, rinse and repeat….

  6. JP09 Says:

When you have a .774 career win percent after 20 years you can have all the “Fun” you want. Can’t wait to watch Brady and the Bucs have “Fun” lighting up the scoreboard and stack W’s! Go Bucs

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

I get all the interest in the who is “really calling the plays and offense” but IMO it’s not all that complicated and it happens everyday in America in organizations from major Corps to family businesses.

I suspect we have all worked for “organizations” although some here may have been self employed or owned the business most have been in group efforts.

The top dog…the shot caller…eventually has to step down. That process can be orderly or messy but it usually just happens gradually. And so top dog continues to groom his successor dogs and along the way starts giving them more and more power and autonomy. This is Bowles and BL. The only difference with TB12 is he will be ON THE FIELD…that’s it! Since he’s the guy who is touching the ball that’s not an insignificant difference. LMAO He’ll be as “independent” as HE feels he needs to be to WIN!!! NOTHING will knowingly get between Tom Brady and WINNING.

He will have EARNED his place at the table with BA and BL. It will be a Triumvirate. But at the end of the day I still believe that BA will be Caesar!
But Caesar will need to be careful about the Ides of Brady. Et Tu Tom Brady?

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Bruce Blahak…the articles not about GMC at all, it’s about Brady and fun.

    You peeps amaze me.

    Nobody MAKES you come here.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

STFU after all this time and your still clueless why fans had a problem with Geraldine. But anyway it’s funny how the panthers had the same run defense we did when he was here. Dude is an average football player

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

I bet Tom looks stunning in a kimono.

  11. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Theres a difference between having fun and being soft. GMC is the epitome of soft.

  12. Durango95 Says:

I’ve seen this Sapp/ McCoy comparison argument before. Just can’t buy it. To me it’s a bit of a canard. I know I’ve never spoken to anyone that compared the two nor expect the same on field presence.

  13. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

Basement NFC South titles aren’t fun at all. They suck.

  14. Ship Thief Says:

I always liked GMC and still do.

He was a damn good player here.

Sapp was possibly the best to ever play his position, but I don’t have any idea what this has to do with GMC. I really don’t.

Did Tony Dorset suck because Emmitt Smith was better?

Did Steve Young suck because he was so different than Joe Montana?

Do you only view Aaron Rodgers as a successor to Favre?

    I don’t really get it.

But, I will say this… It pissed me off when he went to the Kittens.

    I hate that squad.

  15. Matt Says:

Betaboy McCoy is one of the most overrated players in the history of the league. All of his sacks are meaningless and I lost count of how many crucial penalties he had. He is a cancer wherever he goes. He should just go be a father and buy his son a participation trophy every time he cleans his plate or brushes his teeth and teach him all about mediocrity.

  16. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ^^^^^
    That is a great nickname!

  17. Matt Says:

Wait I figured it out! Betaboy McCoy was sent to us from the football Gods to get Tom Brady to feel so sorry for us that he leaves the Patriots to come here to turn our franchise around forever. Genius I tell you! Then he leaves to go to the Panthers to get Rivera fired and force their owner to hire a gimmick college coach. Guys we must start a GoFundMe next page to build a shrine of mediocrity for Betaboy McCoy. All most know that all along McCoy was sucking up all that cap space and making stupid penalties to tank us into the cellar slowly but surely making our defense so weak and pathetic that a great defensive coordinator like Todd Bowles would come here because he knew a defensive couldn’t possibly get any worse and there was only one way to go up.

  18. Ship Thief Says:

    Good lord Matt,
    Get a grip.

  19. DrunkInYbor Says:

I agree he was doomed and it’s not his fault the organization put such super high expectations. They should have marketed him differently. I personally didn’t like his demeanor and I can look past that. It also hurt him that he was nowhere near being a great as Sapp and again not his fault. I’m not trying to sound like a old man but It just seems these younger men are way way more sensitive and nice and when we fans feel like we have more passion than a player it’s game over. Just can’t square it, we all wish we could play for our favorite teams. Just can’t understand why players make millions and millions but appear to lack supreme passion and aggressiveness. While we I absolutely HATE the Steelers taints panthers and so on. We see him smiling after games hugging the opposing players after games and he’s just smiling away. For Christ’s sake the apology to Ben made me feel like I was in the twighlight zone.

  20. Darin Says:

I can’t recall McCoy ever ripping anyone a new one. Brady will do it often. Then when they win he has fun. We all do

  22. Swampbuc Says:

Geraldine made one game changing play in his career, he grabbed Matt Ryan’s ankle on 4th down and helped cause an incompletion. Otherwise he was nowhere in the 4th quarter of close games. He was a good player but not great. Good riddance to the snowcone boy. Suh is a beretter player in one year. Geraldine might not even start for Dallas.

  23. SB Says:

I have enjoyed your site for about 8 years now Joes.
This said you are showing true idiocy with the ‘home invading’ moniker.
You called JW3 Pro Bowler, America’s QB. He was actually a Pro bowl ALTERNATE and everyone outside of Tampa rooted for him to fail.
Yet you call the Greatest of all time a Felon!
    Flippin’ really.
I have a great deal of respect for the business you built for yourself. That respect is fading every time I read that moniker

  24. BringBucsBack Says:

I assure you that, if the Bucs are losing or have a losing record, Tom’s message to his teammates will not be; “…let’s go have some fun.”.

Drunk, well put! If folks think that your attitude makes you too old then, they’re too young and inexperienced. The sweetness that players like Gerald exhibits can kill a competitive sport and has largely done so to the NBA. (Rigged refs. & Jordan-esque one on one, isolation offensive plays further crushed a great league, IMHO.). Many of today’s NBA players meet at half court before the games & hug and kiss each other like reunited family members at the airport. Often Bird, Magic, Jordan, Barkley, Malone etc. would struggle to even acknowledge there opponent before games because, they wanted to step on their throats!

I am all for sportsmanship & it must be maintained but, does kissing (or apologizing to) your opponent put a player in the frame of mind to truly want to defeat his opposition, especially in a contact sport?

  25. TheBradyBunch Says:

Other than this site I have never once heard anyone state that fans expected him to be as good as Sapp. Fans simply wanted a good tackle and GMC was very good. I also don’t think it was because he wasn’t an a-hole like Sapp. Sapp is a generational talent and probably is the best ever at his position. I think all the hatred toward him is because winning didn’t seem that important to him. I loved what GMC did while he was here in his prime but man I will never forget him yucking it up with Cousins after an excruciating loss to the Redskins. I was pissed for a couple hours after the game and here he was, our best player unfazed that the team had just embarrassed themselves and let the Skins come from behind for a win.

  26. Howard Cosell Says:

The whole McCoy saga is a perfect example of Glazerism:
They kept paying McCoy through like 20 coaching staffs simply
because he was good in the community and had the respect of
his peers for his “great 1st step”……no one ever questioned the
fact that he had no fire to win and loved dolls

  27. Beej Says:

I think Sapp was the recipient of a LOT of steroids in his first 4-5 years. Huge dropoff after that, which was about the time they started cracking down

  28. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Well if this doesn’t draw the legendary troll from under his bridge then I believe he’s moved on.

  29. Howard Cosell Says:

Go in the bathroom. turn off the light. Look in the mirror and say
“Who’s afraid of tmax?” three times and he’ll appear

  30. Howard Cosell Says:

    @Beej
I think you may be exactly right. That would explain Sapps demeanor

  31. 2002WasALongTimeAgo Says:

Brady will have some fun throwing to his upgraded weapons while ha ing one of the easiest schedules against pass defenders this year. I hope he and the skill guys are in Montana getting a bit of prep work in.

  32. Tampabuscsbro Says:

McCoy is proof Pro bowls area popularity contests.

  33. Hodad Says:

I don’t see Brady showing up to camp wearing a Japanese girls robe, or a Batman outfit. Brady, and McCoy are nothing alike. One’s a winner, ones a loser who plays with superhero dolls.

  34. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Now this is the disconnect I could give a sh!t less what someones hobbies are. I don’t get why that is held against him. I more so don’t like it cause he is not a real leader he doesn’t play with ferocity and his run defense skills are bad. we needed an edge and a new mentality. Also he was too nice on the field. there are plenty of guys who are incredible good nice guys that play with ferocity and nastiness but McCoy let that spill to the field.

Look what happened when McCoy was gone. Lavonte went from the quiet lead by example player to the leader of the defense barking orders at them and pumping up everyone around him while outright balling doing everything he needs to do at a high level. McIce cream would always beat a guard a few times get a sack but usually be a ghost for the majority of the game

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

GMC the most unavailable D tackle in Bucs’ history. Always hurt or on IR. His stats and game results but him in the Average group, drafted too high and paid too much. Bust

  36. Ship Thief Says:

    Tampabaybucsbro,
McCoy might be the least popular player here of the last decade…
So you assertion that he got to multiple pro bowls because of a popularity contest make zero sense whatsoever.

And you helped me prove this.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

Ya’ll “bangin’ ” on GMC are missing the point of the story.
    WINNING!
WINNING is what makes football fun. That’s what Brady brings.
Standing around the water cooler as a Bucs fan, sans a few short seasons, has been embarrassing. And not because of GMC, it’s because we lost. You guys with this GMC talk! A DT does not effect a team’s ability to win or lose games nearly as much as a QB.
This is a different team. GMC is long gone. Expect better.

  38. Tampabuscsbro Says:

LOL Ship Thief I didn’t know this websites comment section represents most of bucs if not NFL fans.

    Jesus

  39. Bobbo Says:

GMC was a good guy, the kind of guy who will be all smiles and handshakes after losing his 200th round at a board game. Eventually we need someone to get pissed about losing so much.

  40. Bucnjim Says:

We are missing the Gerald McCoy Monikers so popular with this site. Let me add a few: Gerald McCoy side line crying, on field whining, Bat Man Dreaming, bench riding scheming, down by 20 dancing with glee, high fiving the losing team, helping up our opponents, giving up to our opponents, losing with a wide smile, losing by a mile, thinking Batman and Superman would take over the NFL world, finding out they weren’t relevant in the NFL or even in the fantasy world.

  41. Bradybru Says:

    Yes win go bucs

  42. sincethebeginning Says:

The way MaCoy and Brady go about having fun on a football field couldn’t be more opposite. We have all seen plenty enough examples from both of these players to understand what I mean.

McCoy’s idea of fun on a football field is to “play hard and whatever happens happens, win or lose, and at the end of the day ain’t no big deal I don’t care about football all that much compared with all these other things I’ve got interested in my life”.

Meanwhile, Tom Brady is the freaking Michael Jordan of football. If y’all ain’t been watching the Jordan documentary that’s been going on then you might not know what I mean. But Brady’s a dog who has Fun by dominating his sport. That is how the man has fun. He cares about dominating in his sport. McCoy never gave a rat’s ass about that.

  43. lowercaseg Says:

    Good guy, Bum player

  44. SB Says:

Great guy! Above average player. Lacked a ‘winning drive’ inside.
    Just My opinion!

  45. ItzOK Says:

GMC was an average player at best who never and I mean never could make a play when you needed one. Stop bringing him up. Whats next constant articles about Chris Conte and how he was really good just played with a bad team? McCoy lacks any killer instinct and makes two run stops every game getting lucky shooting gaps. The rest of the game he was always out of the play creating big holes for teams to run through.

  46. Cobraboy Says:

McCoy was a good player. Not great. Just good.

His problem is he never lived up to the hype that he, himself, believed, and he tried to build himself a legend on the hype and not the on-field performance.

He is not Sapp, not because of personality, but because of his on-field performance, and I don’t mean helping opponents up. He was never the disruptive force Sapp was, and it took one season of Suh to expose that fact.

  47. ClodHopper Says:

“And there are Bucs fans who despise GMC to this day for his good-guy, clean-cut, family-man nature,”

That’s exactly how one would describe Shaq yet those same fans love Shaq. It’s almost as if it’s something different than that
