Inexpensive help?

The thought that three potential Hall of Fame quarterbacks will line up against the Bucs an expected total of six times this year with a defensive line led by Will Gholston, Carl Nassib and rookie Anthony Nelson is frightening.

But a typist for CBS Sports believes the Bucs could be looking for help, albeit cheap help, which may actually be an upgrade over a Bucs veteran.

With the Bucs in salary cap hell, the idea that the Bucs could land Jadeveon Clowney is silly. So with the 49ers loading up on defensive linemen, John Breech of CBS Sports thinks the Bucs just might be able to land defensive end Solomon Thomas.

As the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Thomas definitely hasn’t lived up to expectations and he’s now in a situation in San Francisco where a change of scenery might be for the best. On the Bucs’ end, they’d only have to pay him $645,000 for the 2019 season and $735,000 for the 2020 season, which are numbers that even the Bucs could afford at this point.

Breech thinks Thomas could be had for a fifth-round pick.

Joe would bump up the ante. Joe would make it a fifth-round pick and a conditional draft pick if Thomas meets performance goals.

While Thomas is not living up to his draft status, he’s an upgrade over Gholston.

Now Gholston is supposed to be so good against the run. Well, if Gholston is that good and Thomas is supposed to be so awful, how is it in the last two years Gholston, playing in 30 games, has five tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits while Thomas, playing in the same number of games, has 13 tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits?

Hell yes,  Joe would cough up a fifth-round pick for Thomas.

The biggest problem the Bucs may have in trading for Thomas is that he and 49ers general manager John Lynch are supposed to be tight because both are Stanford guys.

Like it or not, this is the time of year Licht has done well. We will get some help and if it starts here so be it.

The big question is… Does this guy fit Bowles scheme? I’ll leave that for my fellow JBF posters/analysts to answer.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

I would not let licht weight trade any draft picks away from the Next GM!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. BigMacAttack Says:

Not a bad idea, but please put the panic button down. I think it’s safe to say that Todd Bowles can evaluate the players he has or needs for his defense. We finally have a DC who knows what he’s doing. I like Leftwitch but Bowles should be the heir apparent to BA. Relax, have a cold one and let things unfold. I really think they got this.

  5. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Living, breathing proof that every pass rusher selected in the Top 10 isn’t necessarily Canton-worthy.

Its like… Hey I remember that guy’s name… might want to check the film.

  7. BucsBandit Says:

    2-14.

  8. BucsBandit Says:

@BigMacAttack – what leads you to believe Bowles can evaluate talent at all?

All this BOWLES HYPE is so overblown. Bucs fans are just trying to grab onto any excitement for the upcoming season because the coaches changed.

FACT: Todd Bowles is 26-41 as a head coach. He had ONE winning season as a head coach. As a Defensive Coordinator he had a couple of decent years with Arizona (whose Offense got hot before they returned to being a bad team under Arians) and before that he had a decent pass defense when he took over the Eagles but was ranked 23rd in Run Defense.

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

BB, I don’t care what you think. He’s the DC right now and not the HC. The Jets’ management hung him out dry. If you hate him that’s on you, but I think he’s the best DC we’ve had since Kiff, and by far. One of us will be proven wrong very soon, but I say again, I don’t care what you or anyone else thinks. This defense is going to be much better than anything we’ve seen for the last decade in Tampa. I know that’s really not saying much short of Schiano’s D.

  10. Buc believer Says:

Hell yeah make that trade.. all it would take is one failed kicker. That’s worth it.

  11. ben Says:

No money and still a bottom feeder in the league …Fire Licht yesterday !!!

  12. Smashsquatch Says:

Giving away Thomas for a 5th rounder and a box of chocolates would be equally reckless to signing Kwon to a $54 mil 4 year contract, so yes, this is a possibility.

Jean Lafitte Says: April 25th, 2019 at 3:33 pm … The 49ers are shopping Solomon Thomas. So I’ll say it again, trade Gerald McCoy to San Francisco for Solomon Thomas.

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

Maybe Lynch will wait until after week 1 since we open against them?

  15. Sherman Perigo Says:

Let’s hope Light makes the right decision. I know this sounds cruel but they now have been carrying Kendall Beckwith for two years. Jason Licht gave Vernon Hargraves a nine million fourth year and he has only played five games in two years. So what would you think he will do with Jason Pierre Paul? Looks pretty obvious, cut Gerald Mccoy. The bright spot is Devin White will lead the league in tackles because they have nobody else that can tackle. They will have no one to rush the quarterback that will make defensive backs look bad. Then next year they will draft more defensive backs. They will get the number one pick in the draft and God help us if they pick a kicker HAHA.

  16. Sherman Perigo Says:

Trade Paul for Thomas keep Mccoy.

  17. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Yeah…30 other teams are doing the same math in their heads too…..
without making Ndog’s head explode again…serious BIG picture scenarios need to be explored and one is moving on from good old men McCoy and JPP…humming Bob Marley…”none but ourselves can free our minds”……

  18. Eric y Says:

Let’s keep getting garbage players yup … love it

  19. Costa Rica John Says:

I don’t think Lynch will give up on Thomas. At that salary he can keep him for two years and allow him to enter free agency. Some team will pay him big money and a compensatory pick will be San Francisco’s. Some of these players are like stock pics. You just need to hold on a little longer and you will get most of you investment back.

  20. Jackwagon Says:

Given Thomas’ 2019 & 2020 ultra low salaries….looking at this objectively, has no else wondered why other, scratch that, rather why the smart GM’s in Indy/Philly/Cleveland/NE/LA both/Pittsburgh….on and on…HAVEN’T already obtained Thomas??!! Especially since Lynch was shopping Thomas during the draft?!

Likely because a 5th rounder and a future conditional pick….won’t get it done. They’re likely foolishly looking for a minimum of 4th rounder conditional to 3rd if mutually agreeable playing terms end up being met. Save face from prior first round pick. Stanford ties, neah.

Imagine what kind of coaching job NE could do with Thomas, Philly, Rams, Chargers.

It woulda been done already, they want too much.

That dude from CBS…well, he’s…that dude.

  21. donuts Says:

If this happens then Lynch doesnt understand value…who would give up a 1st round pick in midst of rookie deal for a 5th next year unless player was obvious bust or had off field issues (which is not the case here).

  22. THETRUTH Says:

Gholston is terrible we been waiting for enough years to see his potential play out and nothing.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

2020 2nd round pick for Leonard Williams

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Release Jason Pierre Paul
    Release or Trade Gerald McCoy

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Aaah yes, the Speculation Choo-Choo has run amok yet again, with Joe as the engineer.

  26. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Get guys in here early.
So they can be acclimated with everything.
Don’t wait until the last minute to do so.

  27. JGhoti86 Says:

Completely agree! I’d happily give up a 5th rounder for Mr. Solomon Thomas.

  28. Buchead588 Says:

3rd overall pick in 2017 an there going to trade him for a 5th

  29. Buchead588 Says:

Yes please kid just a late bloomer ppl act like these young kids rap DL are supposed to come in an dominate let them develop make it happen

  30. westernbuc Says:

The Bucs aren’t in salary cap hell. They can easily clear space.

  31. BucsBandit Says:

@BigMacAttack – he’s going to be one of the best DCs we’ve ever had yet he wasn’t for any other teams in his career yet?

    Umm… okay.

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

Like I’ve said, The season is not lost because of JPP’s injury. There are several players yet to be released by teams. And there are a couple of Nassir’s out there. Do you job Licht! Find us a pass rusher.

  33. NOSBOS Says:

    What LUV said at 1:13pm..

  34. Destinjohnny Says:

We trade for him and still go 5-11
We will need our pics to land tua

  35. TOM Says:

The way Licht screws up the draft they may as well trade there picks. I say give the niners a 3rd or 4th. What the hell difference does it make?

  36. FireJasonLicht Says:

I would just like to know what @BucsRealist believes in his delusional mind constitutes a “Real Bucs Fan”

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

Let me get this straight…Bucs fans cry for a week straight that we wasted a “valuable” 5th Round pick on a kicker…Same Bucs fans want to give up a 5th Round pick for a guy that’s averaged 2 sacks a year? We already have Will Gholston to get us 2 sacks per year.

  38. Fed up with fans Says:

For the love of God, enough of the kicker references. It’s so old. Do you really want to live your lives like a Hillary supporter ? Save yourselves and move on.

  39. Anthony Dickson Says:

How’s about a trade including GMC and Gholston with the 49ers for Thomas, the 49ers are almost $50 million under the cap and would help the Bucs shave about $17 million off their cap, whilst getting good talent in return.
