Not Enough Want-To

October 14th, 2018

Offensive line coach George Warhop dropped a very telling line about his unit after last season.

Warhop made it very clear that the line’s effort (keyword: effort) was unacceptable until Week 10 against the Jets.

The Bucs were already 2-6 and effectively out of the playoff chase.

It picked up from there, Warhop said. “We started to turn the corner in terms of mentality of how we want to go about our business. And I thought that helped us. So we just had to shake it up a little bit. And then it doesn’t matter who plays. It really doesn’t matter who’s playing. It’s just a matter of how you want to go about playing.

“More finish, more get on-your-guy, more sustain, and give our backs a better chance, so, it’s just a little bit more grind.”

Joe brings this up today because there are way too many Bucs offensive linemen not playing to the whistle. That’s fundamental football at its simplest. Give it your all for five, maybe even 10 seconds, and repeat.

Yeah, Joe’s looking at you, Donovan Smith. It’s all right there on the TV copy of today’s game for all to see.

So many times Smith isn’t finishing. And there are others, though not as glaring. Ryan Jensen certainly plays the hardest of the bunch.

When is this going to stop? Will the Bucs go into another offseason saying/believing they need another “nasty” lineman to rub off on his teammates?

The O-line has done some great pass blocking this season, and the running game got going today. Joe’s only typing here about effort. The Bucs need it to be better, especially to overcompensate for this team’s atrocious defense.

Yeah but the defense is still giving up 30 points before half

  2. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Maybe if we had a right side of the line instead of turnstiles.

  3. Kalind Says:

It’s up to Warhop now. Make them run. Tomorrow. 3-4 miles should send the message.

  4. EA Says:

It will stop when the bucs hire a disciplinary coach that chews their arses and hold everyone accountable.

  5. BucThis Says:

Get rid of Smith. Ever since that article of him not wanting to turn down his music when asked to repeatedly, I lost respect for him. Cut him and draft or sign anothei

    Winning requires a defense coordinator.

You’ve said that twice. What game did you watch today???

  9. ATLBucsFan Says:

It’s in the culture. Been that way for years. Won’t accomplish much with this attitude. Oh, ya…fire coaches now. Don’t care about consequences. Give me coaches that can coach and TEACH and players that give 100% every play.

  10. Frank Pillow Says:

Benenoch’s nickename should be ‘El Matador’. He has no business starting for an NFL team right now. Go watch the tape- he was absolutely brutal.

  11. Geno Says:

Looked like good effort from the o line to me including Donovan Smith. Of course Joe may have already looked at the actual game film and if he did, I will defer to him.

We are a passing offense. Did Donovan give up any pressures or sacks?

  12. Dooshlarue Says:

    I’m impressed Logical Joe.
That’s exactly what I see when I watch Donovan Smith.
I would not give him big money.

  13. Buc Neckid Says:

Evidence that the Offensive Line is not Nasty or finishing the play,
123 yards rushing (and 31 of that is by a running for his life QB)

  14. Buc believer Says:

I was sitting right behind the O line during today’s game and their body language except for Jensen didn’t look like they even wanted to be there. Bennonoch had both arms draped across the beach everytime he was there just like he was waiting for a bus. Sad everything about this team sucks.

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Nick Saban next HC………warhop sux as OL coach and then the GM has zero clue as evident by letting an alleged franchise qb get protected by benenoch and dotson

  16. Gobucs Says:

    Nick Saban?

    Are you plain stupid?

Wow that’s the absolute dumbest thing I’ve heard this week.

That has to be a joke

  17. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

NO NICK SABAN the 2nd best coach in all of football only to belichek, are you stupid or have no clue on football turn on cbs at 330 and watch that rool tide squad dominate with better NFL players than what the bucs have, saban has done all he can in college he wants back in the NFL to show he can win there, you are a doofus on jason licht level to dismiss saban……you ever hear of jimmy johnson?

  18. firethecannons Says:

Benenoch sucks–dude is bad every game–wtf?

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Dusthty … Nick Saban makes a helluva lot more coaching Bama than he’d ever make coaching the Bucs. Plus he’s revered up in Alabama … don’t think that’d be the case in Bucsville. Besides, he tried the NFL, remember? Didn’t even last 1 season as I recall.

  20. Not there yet Says:

Our tackles are trash for different reasons, demar just isn’t good this year, Donovan has always been average and his motor was the knock coming out of college probably because he’s so fat. This team is full of weak minded individuals and it won’t change as long as they aren’t being challenged to compete for the right to play. Benenoch is a classic example, do they think he is playing so much better than anyone else? Bench him and find out. Can’t wait sit to get these amateur coaches outta here.

  21. Big Z Says:

Josh McDaniels, But thats going to require a savvy GM. …. forget it.

  22. NPRSageBoy Says:

Benanch has no business being on the field. There’s got to be better RG walking the street

  23. teacherman777 Says:

    @frankpillow

Benenoch is being forced into the starting lineup because he was a 5th round draft pick.

Licht is forcing his draft picks onto the field.

Benenoch is no better than Omameh or Larsen or Pamphile or Sweezy.

RG was a NEED in the 2nd round.

    Instead,

    Lich dtafted to 4.6 CB’s!!

MJ Stewart is a good tackler, but he is SLOW!

I thought we learned our lesson when we drafted Jonathan Banks and started Leonard Johnson!

You cant have CB’s that run 4.6 in the NFL!!!

    I told @joe

Donte Jackson and Perry Nickerson were the picks!!

Both are Southern Spirits and both run 4.3!!

  24. TBTemojin Says:

Several plays were Dotson or Bennonoch don’t even put hands on anyone…… fourth quarter sack in the red zone and Dotson is literally standing there with his hands down by hips as Bennonoch gets ripped through and the DE stunts inside….. Just unacceptable O line play from the right side.
