Koetter Cursed With Inconsistent Kickers

October 14th, 2018

Painted Bucs into a corner.

Ever since Dirk Koetter came to Tampa Bay to serve as offensive coordinator in 2015, Bucs kickers have done more for antacid sales than any local doctor.

This nonsense continued today when Chandler Catanzaro missed an extra point. It meant the Bucs had to chase points and that ended up killing the Bucs in the end.

The Bucs had to go for two in the second half to make up for that missed extra point and they failed. Had the Bucs gotten that two-point conversion, or if Catanzaro makes two extra points (one wasn’t attempted due to the two-point try), the Bucs would have only needed a field goal at the end of regulation instead of using a trick play to try to win.

And America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had the Bucs in easy field goal range.

Joe asked Koetter after the game to speak to the kicking woes of the Bucs. They have been a thorn in his side all four seasons he has been in Tampa Bay.

“No one feels worse than Chandler,” Koetter said, but admitted chasing points due to Catanzaro’s gaffe put the Bucs in a pinch.

The irony of it all is that it was ageless Matt Bryant who booted the field goal to secure the win for the Dixie Chicks with a 59-yard field goal for what proved to be the final score.

The Bucs have had a virtual non-stop revolving door at kicker since then-Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik decided to nickel-and-dime Bryant, who owns the Bucs record for longest field goal.

Bryant was cut in 2009. Ever since, he has been a rock for the Dixie Chicks. Aside from two or three years with basketball-playing Connor Barth, who blew out an Achilles in a charity hoops game and never recovered fully, the Bucs kicking game has been anything but steady since being cheap with Bryant.

Bryant is partially why Joe is adamant the Bucs keep Jameis. This team has a rich history of getting rid of good players at every position for one silly or stupid reason or another. And fans wonder why the Bucs can’t win.

Quit getting rid of good players!

Once the Bucs stop this downright dumb practice, and Bryant is Exhibit-A, this team will continue to be a punchline for NFL jokes and reside in Buccaneers Cove, last place in the NFC South.

    Don’t care. The Team lost.

  2. Frank Pillow Says:

I bet Chandler’s middle name is Roberto

  3. Geno Says:

Maybe the bucs knew that Matt Bryant would pull his hamstring at age 43 and that is why they did not want him any longer.

  4. Sweeptheleg Says:

This whole organization is cursed. From the owners down to the backup of the backups.

Other than 7-8 years this franchise is a dumpster fire. It’s pathetic. I bet they will lose to the browns.

Mayfield will look like Montana next week.

  5. Geno Says:

And so starts Joes talk about Jameis. By the end of the week, he will look at the statistics and say we can win a super bowl with him.

    The curse is bad coaches.

  7. Buc4life24 Says:

We have lost a lot of games due to our incompetent kickers…this is not one of them! Our Defense is the primary reason we lost and will not make a playoff run in 2018.

  8. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

the curse is the worst gm in pro football

  9. Chris in WA Says:

The problem is that Jamies isn’t a good player. He isn’t bad per se but look at the QB’s who have been drafted in 2016, 2017, or 2018 after him.

  10. Buc Neckid Says:

    is Mariota > than Jameis???
The other guy was not the answer either

Hind sight is 20/20 and it is easier to be a Morning After GM

  11. BuccoDav Says:

No. this is not on Catanzaro alone.
Yes it sucks he missed an extra point but there were plenty of opportunities for the offense to take this game over in the second half.
If you are going to demonize Catanzaro for his missed opportunity, then you have to demonize Winston for the 2 picks with scoring opportunity.

  12. Season Is Over Says:

Maybe if Koetter didn’t think he was going to outsmart the world and move players like Marpet to four different positions in four years he would have more success. No one is feeling sorry for Koetter. We all watched it happen and him do nothing about it.

  13. Not there yet Says:

Wow we’re actually blaming him for missing the extra point, is this how pathetic things are, is the sun really affecting people’s brains. I remember us being down 21-6. Were actually blaming the kicker for missing a point like. 2 minutes into the game lol wow🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 that’s pathetic

  14. Troy Says:

Browns will beat this team next week because they have a winner at QB and actually care. Hopefully McCoy’s boo-boo is OK. Maybe his mom can kiss it for him.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

Hope it’s hotter than hell next week and the Browns melt down.

  16. Buc believer Says:

Troy no his Dad went to kiss it for him. I sat right behind him at the game and as soon as Geraldine got hurt pops was up and out of his seat going to the sidelines to check on his baby boy.

  17. NPRSageBoy Says:

Ever since Gruden sent Bryant packing, we have sucked

  18. unbelievable Says:

It wasn’t Gruden, it was the pop star dummynick.

I called out how terrible of a move that was at the time, and I have been screaming about it every week every year since.

So so dumb. Like almost everything else this franchise does.

  19. LakeLand Says:

He made a 62 yard FG to beat the Eagles

    The Bucs don’t want winners

  20. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

But but but what about the defense GIVING UP 30 POINTS BEFORE HALF?!?!?

Speaking of Roberto, I forget which team he was trying out for, but he had a perfect training camp and preseason according to a few sources I read. Even though that team’s incumbent kicker did worse, they still cut the kid.

    I feel for him.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s funny, because as I recall it, most of the commenters here thought cutting Bryant was a good idea because he “had a weak leg” and couldn’t even do kickoffs.

The funny part is how they now claim they were against it back then. Guess what? My name is the same now as it was then. Look up my comments at the time. It’s too bad about 75% of the commenters here cannot do that because they switch names so much.

As to Chandler Catanzaro, I hated the signing and length of commitment. Patrick Murray came in after game four and played his tail off. Field Goals and XPs were competitive with Chandler Catanzaro.

The least they could have done is let Murray compete. Instead they let him walk and brought in a scrub.

All the while, on of the SEC’s most clutch kickers (Austin MacGinnis) went undrafted in 2018 & cannot seem to get a NFL tryout. http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/stats/_/id/551105/austin-macginnis
