Props To Jameis

October 10th, 2017

The right way.

In a way, former Bucs scout and Jets player personnel director Pat Kirwan felt bad for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

After the loss to the Belicheats, Jameis came under fire from many for a bad game and for his hero worship of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

One contention by fans has merit, Kirwan said. The Brady issue, Kirwan believes that is just hogwash.

Speaking on his excellent show “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Kirwan said how Jameis looks up to Brady demonstrates Jameis has respect for the game and is doing things the right way.

“The guy so badly wants to be great,” Kirwan said. “He is trying to do everything. And I think the respect he showed for Brady afterwards just shows a little insight about how much he cares about doing it the right way.

“The guy at practice wants to be the leader. He is trying real hard to do that the right way. He stays after practice, he is working — he took O.J. Howard the day I was there and said, ‘Look, I can tell you what to do but I think it’s better to get Cameron Brate here to demonstrate it. You go after him. We will take two reps at each new play. Cameron will go and then you will go.’ And I’m sitting there going, ‘This guy is half a coach.'”

Kirwan noted he felt bad for Jameis that a guy with his passion and work ethic wasn’t able to get the final play completed and add to his legacy.

Kirwan later went on to say that the Bucs are an “OK team.”

Exactly they are OK. And that’s fine. Next few years will be very telling

  2. firethecannons Says:

Yeah Bucs are ok, especially after we kick cardinal ass, we need to go in there, no friendly, no none of that bs, methodically execute on offense, defense and special team and coaching, we need to focus and get fully dialed in, we need to finish the the game and leave them in the same shape they left us last year. Remember Arians saying he thought his team didn’t massacre enough–he thought it should of been worse than what it was. I don’t want to see C Palmer or B Arians after this season–let us make it happen. I live here(Scottsdale) and believe me on the radio they are talking about tanking for QB already after their last loss to Eagles.

  3. Oj "I Got The Juice" Howard Says:

Many young QBs are excelling this year, many of whom are rookies and 2nd year guys. At this point I’m totally convinced that this coaching staff has no clue how to unlock the potential of Jameis Winston.

Kirwan is correct. The NFC South is a very strong division and the Bucs simply are not strong enough as a team. Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees are playing like MVPs. Jameis isn’t there yet and fan favorite Dirk Koetter is not doing the team any favors with his play calling and decision making.

Anything less than 10 wins and Jason Licht should be fired. He’s made some good decisions with draft picks but his repeated gaffes with the kicker position, repeatedly missing the mark in free agency, and his inability to build up the D-Line is too much for the team to overcome this season.

The denizens of this site frequently blamed Lovie Smith for all personnel decisions, one of which was signing and letting go of Patrick Murray. Is re-signing someone that didn’t work out the first time around going to be Lovie’s fault too?

  5. Maze Says:

You know you’re in trouble when you’re defending Lovie Smith 😅

  6. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

I am a koetter supporter and I do not get to see the coach’s tapes to see if it is the offense or jameis or both but there seems to be some creative OCs out there that are maximizing the talent on their team and getting the hands into their playmakers with greater frequency than I have seen here, not sure why the jailbreak screens and things arent going to Djax….and also want to know if Jameis has the power to audible out of bad plays or into a quick throw or audible into better areas, it seemed the other night the pats were bringing everyone one play right to where the bucs ran the ball and jameis should have seen it and imstead ran it right into the blitz

  7. D-Rome Says:

You know you’re in trouble when you’re defending Lovie Smith

I’m not defending Lovie Smith. I’m pointing out that for a long time the narrative around here was every pick or free agent signing that worked out was Jason Licht’s decision and every one that didn’t work out it was because of Lovie Smith used his authoritar! The mouth-breathers around here no longer have their punching bag to blame and haven’t been nearly as quick to be critical of the GM’s gaffes.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Look….I am a Jameis supporter as I am for every player on our roster…..Jameis works very hard and is a great leader…..I’m sure he is doing his absolute best….he needs to be more accurate and Koetter needs to design an offense for his strengths….and that is not downfield.
Let’s have more of what we saw with Djax and his YAC…..more Sims….commitment to running.

  9. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Maze

Excellent point there sir. People seem to have forgotten how truly, truly awful Lovie Smith was in his time here.

Gotta love how people think the season’s over already despite having 3/4’s of the schedule remaining.

Jameis is gonna hit that Mid season stride here pretty soon, like he has done in the past, and the defense ( outside of #28 ) showed some signs of life vs old man Brady.

Cam is one hit away from being back on the bench. Falcons are already showing signs of choking away their season. Don’t be shocked if this Bucs team goes 11-5 and gets to the playoffs now haters.

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

D Rome well said…bucs do not have a playoff team because playoff teams have strong defenses and good special teams that can go into any playing condition and display that….

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

We could go 6-10 (not that I think we would) and I’d think it’d be stupid to fire Light. Look at the talent he’s added in 3-4 years vs anything the past 2 GMs ever did. Look around the league in general and he’s been more successful than most.

Grade on a curve or you’re not going to set realistic expectations.

  12. Wausa Says:

It took Lovie 16 games to win 2 games.

  13. RayJameisStadium Says:

I still say by the time we play our divisional games our defense will own them. Also by that time the Winston to DJax chemistry will be clicking. All is right on track.

At worst we will get into the playoffs by winning the division.

These are not your old Bucs folks!!!!

    Expect different!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  14. Morahdin Says:

I’m just waiting for a real Fameis Jameis game! That’s what we drafted, right? 35 and still counting the waiting is getting hard.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If the Glazers fire yet another coach after this year, I’m done.

Heck, if they fire Jason Licht I’ll seriously consider being done.

Because this team will NEVER amount to a hill of beans with the constant turnover in staff. Fans that want Licht gone are total idiots. Take Aguayo out of the picture and you would not feel that way…and NO coach should be fired of the kicking position regardless.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    No GM I mean.

Wtf are you waiting for? Did you miss his 5 TD performance vs the Eagles in 2015 halfway through his rookie season lol?

    Wtf are your expectations?

Currently the leading nominee for most moronic JBF comments statement of the month.

  19. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

^Thanks for beating me to it lord C.

Plus I’d say he had a really good game last week against the Giants. Oh and Week 1 against Atlanta last year. 4 TD’s 281 yards and 1 Int is great as well.

  20. JJBucFan Says:

^^^Koetter is still afraid of him, almost coaching the aggression out of him. He is going to make mistakes just get out of his way. P Manning threw more INTs at this point in his career and when they got out of his way, look at the results. Of course Jameis is not Manning so don’t start with that crap haters, just a comparison. BTW at FSU he was great at the run pass option, getting him on the move and the QB sneak, has anyone seen this out of our offense? How about the no huddle (consistently) and Letting Jameis make adjustments at the line. I like Koetter but my patience is wearing thin. In case you don’t know Dirk, JW3 will be here long after you are so you might as well jump on his back and set him free, he may carry you a long way.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

The AZ Cardinal game is a very winnable game for us guys. But we gotta be all straight up business out there. The Cardinals are mad and wounded. They have great fans and a very loud arena. We gotta jump on’em and stay on’em. Carson Palmer has got to feel our Defense. He hurries under pressure bigtime. But like any vet QB, give him lots of time, and he looks likr the 2nd coming. HE does not handle pressure well. Get after him and stay on his A..!!

  22. LakeLand Says:

    Add to his legacy?

  23. AlteredEgo Says:

“Many young QBs are excelling this year, many of whom are rookies and 2nd year guys. At this point I’m totally convinced that this coaching staff has no clue how to unlock the potential of Jameis Winston.”…..yeah…the coaching staff is coaching him to throw the football where his receivers can’t catch them…”close”…horseshoes and hand grenades ….and media….I hope Jameis CAN…but until he does I am not going to call it any other way than it IS !

  24. 1sparkybuc Says:

Take Mike Evans out of the equation and we’re not having such high expectations for Jameis, and we can’t blame Dirk Koetter for poor excecution. The OL is doing their job and the experts have raved about our weapons. Maybe Jameis isn’t quite where we expect him to be just yet. Maybe he will never be elite. He’s still the best we have ever had. Patience people. He’s doing the best he can.

  25. AlteredEgo Says:

I have plenty of patience…I only respond to the gloss over media

  26. D-Rome Says:

    Pickgrin,

You may feel that way but I know I’m not alone in that sentiment. If the Bucs go 8-8 or 9-7 then the team has taken a step backward after all the addition in personnel in the off-season. That’s unacceptable and someone will get fired. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to Ira. Listen to others. Key people on this staff will not be here if the Bucs win less than 10 games. You’re not very smart if you think there won’t be changes if the Bucs don’t win 10.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

My sentiment is that Koetter doesn’t “feel” the game. The Pats bludgeoned us with the same play over and over. Why? IT WORKED! You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every possession or every down. It’s about winning games not appeasing diva WRs or fans. If the run-game is working, well um, you run the ball.
I’m sorry, but Jameis should not be putting the ball in the air 40+ times, ESPECIALLY when the running game is working. I put this on coaching as much as the kicking. Although, he really could use some touch on the long ball. How long should that take?!

  28. CitruscountyBUC Says:

Everyone is wanting to fire Licht. And, Dirk all of a sudden sucks as a coach after 3 games. You what all the great franchises have in common? Continuity. They don’t go firing guys after a handful of years. Let Licht and Dirk work through it and we will be a better franchise for it.

  29. Pick6 Says:

too much expectation on this team this year. they need to at least match last year’s win total but it seems like every week besides the bears game there’s an undercurrent of “should we break up the team?” just because they aren’t looking like a vintage Patriots squad.

aside from a minnesota game where injuries and illness had the defense down to like 3 or 4 opening day starters, the D is playing near late 2016 levels –
especially when you adjust for injuries to guys like kwon and lavonte for 2+ games. i don’t see the bucs suddenly becoming elite vs the pass but i don’t see them putting up many more stinkers like the minnesota game if our stars stay healthy

on offense you’ve got a new center (snapping has clearly been an issue and even drive killer at times), 3 new high-quality targets that necessitate more chemistry and an evolving pecking order, and a backfield that is way worse without doug martin.

It would be awesome to see Jameis and his pass catchers executing better, but the bucs are still finding their way and anybody who assumes they are close to their best offensive football just needs to look back one season and see how the team looked before and after the defense found itself. similar phenomenon at play on offense right now

  30. 813bucboi Says:

    @drome…I agree….heads will roll if we don’t win 10games….

@lc….drome has a pint….how can you do less with more talent than the bucs have had in years!!!…one can debate licht….but dirk..nawl…he and Winston are tied to the hip…Winston hasn’t improved the way everyone expected him to….we know he’s a hard worker…a leader…team first type of guy…dirk was hired to develop Winston and get the most out of him….dirk has failed in that regard and makes questionable coaching decision seems like every other week….GO BUCS!!!

  31. notabucsfan Says:

Trade Jameis today and your problem will be gone. There are 31 teams not named the bucs that would love to deal for him today. Make sure they throw in another TE and safety that can’t play and a deal is done.

There is a reason that bucs have always been a joke of a pro team. I just never knew the fans were as ignorant as the management, but this site proves they are.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

“Trade Jameis today and your problem will be gone.”

Right, I definitely read that somewhere here! At least bring something to the table. Or, are you too good for us Buc fans?!
Go be a “notabucsfan” somewhere else! Buh-bye!

  33. Destinjohnny Says:

    Love 3.
    Worry about his accuracy

  34. ndog Says:

Just for some perspective Jameis currently is 3rd in the league in yards per game, is tied for 7th in the league in TD passes (with one less game played than most others) and has thrown less picks than 16 other QB’s in the league (again with one less game played than most). I think for some he will have to be at #1 in each of the above categories for them to be happy.

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

    To much “Madden” atttitude
You can add every All Pro”Weapon” in the league, but the team wont go 16-0.
    Why?
Because they are people, not computer Avatars.
It takes time to work these new “weapons” in to the offense. Thats the problem right now. Most ofvour first half struggles, were trying to force throws to Jackson. I dont know if its Koetter determined to intergrate him, or Desean in Jameis ear too much.
It wasDesean trying to adjust to Jameis- and Visa versa, that was throwing them off. Plus they kept going for the home run.

Not the best way to develop chemistry. Hit the short to midrange. Homeruns will come.

It is hoing to take Desean, Howard, and Godwin time to adjust to playing with their teammates.
If you dont understand that, and that is the early issues,
    Then stick to Madden.

  36. Pick6 Says:

also, if we end this season with the sense that Jameis underperformed, Jameis’ status as our Franchise QB will still be as secure as at was when the bucs started the season. Likewise, Koetter and Licht won’t be jettisoned either unless this team finishes with 6 wins or less.

The guy on the chopping block will be Mike Bajakian. The position coach should take the majority of responsibility for a star QB’s improvement or regression, especially when your head coach is also your playcaller and de facto OC. Koetter has more on his plate than just worrying about Jameis’ mechanics or mastery of certain concepts, he’s got 53 guys to worry about and he and the QBs need to believe in the position coach’s ability to get them ready and make them better

  37. Pickgrin Says:

    D-Rome says:
“You’re not very smart if you think there won’t be changes if the Bucs don’t win 10.”

If Bucs go 6-10 then MAYBE I could see the Glazers get antsy and perhaps fire a coach if one side of the ball has grossly underperformed all season. Still highly unlikely after all the turnover the past few years. Koetter would have to have two sub .500 years in a row to get fired at this juncture IMO.

But Jason Licht? No way. Licht is going nowhere anytime soon. He’s done a great job loading this team up with young talent.
