Baseball Strong Or Baseball Weak?

July 21st, 2015

JameisbaseballAmerica’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was a baseball standout at Florida State cranking out 95 miles-per-hour fastballs.

Did playing baseball help Jameis’ arm by limiting his football throwing when it wasn’t football season, or did it hurt his football arm, because he was wearing it out and not developing football strength?

The topic of rookie QBs coming down with a “dead arm” was discussed by Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud on WDAE-AM 620 recently.

Stroud and radio running mate Tom Jones, a noted Joe basher, noted Blake Bortles had a weak arm issue with the Jaguars last year, and Stroud referenced that Brad Johnson took practices off during his Bucs days.

So what about Jameis? The optimist in Joe says Jameis will unveil his strongest arm yet in 2015. The watchful spring care of the Bucs’ strength staff, and the normal physical progression of a young 21-year-old, should do the trick, right?

It’s a tough question. There are few, if any, guys with the physical history of Jameis, especially with that much juice on his fastball. Remember, there was a question about his shoulder at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Hopefully, the Bucs will be able to run the damn football for a change, which should make the endurance of Jameis’ 2015 arm a moot point.

Didn’t seem to effect Elway too much. May not be the same situation but ….

  2. Buccfan37 Says:

A 21 year old arm should not take that long to recover. Winston will be fine. Tom Jones is left in the dust with that generic moniker, what’s new pussycat?

  3. Kalind Says:

Joe. Wear that Tom Jones criticism like a badge of honor. That dude is a tool.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

Tom Jones did sing that, it was a big hit played on the radio. Probably his best song.

  5. Buc-A-New Says:

I wonder what kind of article Joe will do on the heels of Sando ranking JW as a 4th tier QB at 26th overall behind Mariota.

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

A dead arm should not be a problem.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ceasing with the pitching can’t hurt him….hopefully it’s not only the arm strength but 52week concentration on football physically & mentally will also help.

Ya. Not the same situation because Elway played in the outfield. He wasn’t pitching throwing 95 mph heat

  9. Seminole Bill Says:

He’s young and should not have any trouble throwing. Plus, the throwing motion of a football and a baseball are much different.

  10. Buc-A-New Says:

Where are all my Bucs homies?

  11. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

Please elaborate on Tom Jones’ beef? 🙂

Jones wanted to give Freeman $100 million dollars, and you were not for it. You were right, and that is all.

  12. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Wow it must be July and a couple of weeks from training camp. The story well is about to run out.

This is simply a non story. The number of NFL QB’s who were good enough players to be selected by MLB is long indeed. My first thought was just like WS99 Elway. But since we’ve decided to eliminate outfielders…a list that included Michael Vick, Jake Locker and Russell Wilson…how about Tom Brady a catcher…mostly lobs back to the pitcher but some throws to second? OK if we’re only talking pitchers…lets’ just toss out a few recent examples.

Colin Kaepernick, QB, 49ers (pitcher, Cubs, 43rd round, No. 1,310 overall, 2009)

Brandon Weeden, QB, Browns (pitcher, Yankees, 2nd round, No. 71 overall, 2002).

Matt Cassel, QB, Vikings (pitcher, Athletics, 36th round, No. 1087 overall, 2004).

Are these guys known for their “dead arms”?

  13. BuccaneEric75 Says:

The fact that Winston isn’t throwing baseballs will only help his mechanics and lessen the wear on his shoulder. I would only be worried if he was still pitching. The more time spent this offseason on football should make him better than we saw him at FSU.

  14. WS99 Says:

    Dougy

I should have know Jameis is in a class by himself.

  15. Harry Says:

People like to be controversial, and I think some in the media do even more so to draw attention to what they write. How can anyone with half a brain not think that Mariota is going to struggle more than Jameis, at least in the beginning?! Unless one of them is Dan Marino reincarnated, they are rookies and will have to learn to play in the NFL. Then, when you combine that with the fact Mariota is learning how to run a Pro offense, COME ON MAN! F-King STUPID.

  16. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Harry, does this mean the Bucs win or lose week 1 2-0?

  17. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Both QBs will have ups and downs. I just hope Winston has more ups and less downs! Lol

  18. Joe Says:

@SteveK — You can read about Joe and Tom Jones’ nonsense here. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2010/11/joebucsfan-com-will-respond-before-midnight/

@St.PeteBucsFan — You are reading things that aren’t here and comparing apples to oranges. Jameis’ college pitcher-to-starting-NFL-QB-situation is nowhere near the same as the guys you mentioned.

  19. Bucco Says:

Tom Jones is a clown, almost as bad as Ian Beckles.

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Joe

Jameis’ college pitcher-to-starting-NFL-QB-situation is nowhere near the same as the guys you mentioned.

Really? I totally do not understand why. Now if you give me some more detailed analysis that shows Fameis pitched way more innings than Kaepernik or Weeden or Cassell that would certainly be a factor.

I was under the impression that Fameis was a relief pitcher and not throwing that heat consistently but I could be mistaken.

I do agree with TBBF that giving up pitching is a positive. It enables Fameis to concentrate on football and he won’t be struggling with mechanics because of baseball but arm strength..meh.

  21. Buc-A-New Says:

Guys……let’s just let Koetter work with JW. Can we do that? Kid threw a bunch of picks last yr that were unwarranted. Let’s just accept that he is a rookie and needs work and experience before he is going to be Elite if he can reach that status.

  22. WS99 Says:

Frankly, I wasn’t calling Wingo a racist at all; just keeping it real.

As you always do!!! And props to Hawaiibuc and Capt Tim for being on that post. #lifers

  23. Buc-A-New Says:

Sup DB?! You hanging out here tonight?

  24. WS99 Says:

Yes I’ll be back in a few. time to read some books and tuck the princess in. I’ll be back.

  25. Buc-A-New Says:

You take care of that Princess and absolutely Smother here with love!! Catch you in a bit

  26. Buc1987 Says:

    We skrong den.

  27. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Wow, Capt.Tim and Hawaiian Buc are the only names from now that are on that 2010 comment page. That’s crazy. And yes, I know mine isn’t on there either! Lol

  28. Fsuking Says:

This is it Joe. This marks the end of anything that can be considered news for the 2015 off-season. But I would argue that taking the ball out of the hands of a phenom and placing it into the hands of a mediocre running back(s) behind an o-line that grades (?) on PFF is not the way to win. Dirk would back me up on that

  29. Buc-A-New Says:

Sup 87 and BuccaneEric? Hope all is good in your worlds

  30. Buc1987 Says:

@BuccaneEric75…there’s many names from that thread that are still on here. It’s just the offseason right now. Mr Lucky and BigmacAttack will mostly be back when the season starts up Architek as well, Many many more. I saw all kinds of names I recognized.

@Joe…I’m sure you’ve heard me bash Jones more than once. I can’t effin tand that punk. Yes I would say it to his face all 6ft 180 pounds of dripping skinniness. Someone needs put that guy in his place. I hope to run into him one day, I really do and I’m a lover not a fighter. But man do I despise that scumbag more than anyone else in the Tampa area media.

@Buc…fine and dandy this evening family is back home from their vacation to Seattle. It’s tremendously louder around my house again. No need to crank up music for it to get loud in here right now. Kids running all around and mom yelling that them left and right. Total chaos. Now I’m just counting down the days until their next vacation w/o me. lol

  31. Eric Says:

He threw more passes than anyone at the pro day.

Two years of relief pitching shouldn’t have destroyed his arm.

A whimper of ado about nothing,

  32. Buc-A-New Says:

Hey 87. If you dig down, you will understand that the chaos of family life is actually what you live for and enjoy the most. A week without them is cool for a week. Any longer than that and there should be separation anxiety.

  33. Buccfan37 Says:

I read the November 2010 piece and comments, man that was long, enjoyed it though. It showed me how popular this site is on controversial topics, especially when the Bucs are winning. I also was checking out which posters are commenting still.

  34. BucsFan85 Says:

wasn’t here in ’10, but I have always been a fan. I live in Lake County, FL and bucs fans are few and far between. Love coming on here with fellow die hards.

  35. BucsFan85 Says:

Also sucks because when bucs and jags play, I get jags games. Have Dish not direct tv, so no Sunday ticket. I used to catch the games on wiziwig, now I dont know what to do.

The way u feel about jones is the way I feel about Sander Phillips. I don’t even know what that dude is talking about half the time ie Louis Murphy equal or greater than Reggie Wayne! Come on man! I know meth and crack are legal in the Netherlands or wherever that itch is from but lay off the pipe dude. Are the bucs a dynasty? Are you stupid? JFC that dude really grinds my gears.

    Buc
It’s all about family. I’m lucky my house is calm and quiet. Plus my baby is hilarious, truth is I’m a total sapp. Lol get it sapp.

  37. Buc-A-New Says:

Yeah, I just checked the comment section and HawaiianBuc, Capt. Tim, and Matt were the only ones I recognize that still comment today with the possible exception of “Doneykat” which may be today’s “Owlykat”
I didn’t find this place until early 2012

I wonder what jaboo doing right now? Hopefully he put his girl to bed 😉 turned on nfln, grabbed his iPad and is putting in work.

  39. Buc-A-New Says:

Your humor is off the charts bro! Not really but I still luv ya despite your Nole status. Keepin it real is something that only true fans understand.

  40. WS99 Says:

Man I’ve been here less than a year and it feels like home. Love the joes and their pov. Soooo much better than what’s out there. NFL, br (for the tweets) and JBF is all I need.

  41. BucsFan85 Says:

I hear you 99, this is real, those other sites I just don’t know. Love how they always quote JBF

  42. bucsbedabest Says:

The chosen one, AQB, has a 95 MPH fastball with a 1.94 ERA. I hear a lot that throwing a baseball has nothing to do with throwing a football. That being drafted by a MLB team has nothing to do with success in the NFL? Hogwash. Every player I have heard that was drafted by a MLB team was successful in the NFL. It takes talent to play two sports. His provocative charismatic nature and his play for keeps divine righteous talent is electrifying for all to observe. His arm is fine.

  43. Buc-A-New Says:

How does one choose if he only has one angle to make his selection from??

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Buc..it depends on if you’re an ass man or a breast man I guess. lol

    G’night!

Sorry I got caught up in them damned political blogs once again…

  47. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Seminole Bill Says
“He’s young and should not have any trouble throwing.”

Well…I could argue that he already has trouble throwing…and I would be right. Even he agreed at his pro day. His throwing needs a lot of work. His throwing speed needs a lot of work.

And, as he said at his pro day, he needs to learn to NOT stare down his target (which I pointed out for months but people just didn’t want to accept it. Heck, even after Winston admitted to it they don’t accept it!)

I would like to see him improve in the following areas this year:

    – move fast, make faster decisions, but wise ones.
    – get out of the habit of staring down WRs or operate in a no huddle, fast paced system so it doesn’t matter (Koetter does this style anyway)
    – Improved footwork. He tends to trip over himself. Defensnse will thrive on this if he doesn’t get it under control.
    – Ball placement. Regardless of the so-called “experts” doing youtube promotional reviews for Winston, he doesn’t have good ball placement on the sidelines. He throws behind and inside…which is the prime interception zone. Defenders in the NFL will feed of that! He needs to place the ball slightly ahead and to the outside shoulder, where it cannot be picked off.

If he can show growth in those areas and stay out of trouble, I will totally buy in.

Still won’t buy jerseys though. But not because of him. I just hate the new jerseys.

  48. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’ll say this though…he won’t have a chance behind the offensive line as it is right now. They are going to have to run the ball a LOT, and the offensive line is going to have to learn to run block before it can pass block well enough.

Defenses are going to blitz Winston like any other rookie to see if it flusters him. With a good offensive line, it wouldn’t matter, but we don’t have that.

EVEN IF the two rookies turn out to be great, it’s going to take time. It won’t come in an instant.

So fast passes and a lot of running and Winston will have a great year.

  49. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

I can’t believe JOE and Tom Jones don’t get along. They have so much in common. Especially since they both have solid positions in the absolute lowest tier of Tampa Bay area sports writing. Especially funny to find in JOE’s 2010 comments that JOE feels Jones provides “spin-filled” writing in his efforts. Glaring example of the pot calling the kettle black.
