Why Not Ted Ginn?

February 27th, 2015

ted ginn

For a variety of reasons, the return game of the Bucs has been anemic since “Run Micheal Run” Spurlock left the team. Historically, the Bucs have been impotent in scoring touchdowns on kickoff returns.

One player dangling out there is Ted Ginn, Jr.

No, Ginn should never been confused with Vincent Jackson. Or Mike Evans. But the guy is a decent No. 3 receiver (nothing more). As a return guy, Ginn in top shelf. Always has been.

Once the free agency dinner bell rings in less than two weeks, Joe sure hopes Bucs general manager Jason Licht has Ginn’s agent on speed dial.

You want to make an immediate impact on the return game? Sign Ginn. (Bucs could have had him in free agency last year) After going 2-14, Bucs coach Lovie Smith needs all the impact he can get.

Ginn would be a good return man. A few teams have reached out to him already. As we all know a good return man is essential in Lovie’s grand scheme of things

  2. BirdDoggers Says:

Ginn is one of the better options available. He can offer some shiftiness as a slot receiver, but more importantly, he would be a big upgrade for the return game. Lovie was on a constant search for a return man last season. Ginn has to be on his radar.

  3. bucs4lyfe Says:

If you cant find a good return man in the draft then something is wrong with your scouting department. keep bringing up players that have been on 3-4 different teams without asking themselves why…….i would be worried if ted ginn was on speed dial and if you ask why, so was josh mccown. they need to stop jumping into free agency on day one overpaying for average players. if your a good player chances are you don’t make it to free agency until your salary outweighs your talent

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

The draft is suppose to be as deep with receivers as last year. The Bucs don’t need scraps. They need to find playmakers!!!

  5. Maxx Says:

Or…Jacoby Jones? Bigger money but does he still have gas left in the tank, ya think?

  6. Yungry Says:

Is there any reason why Charles Sims couldn’t return kicks? He has the best hands on the team and is very fast…

  7. bucco brice Says:

    @The Buc Realist
    yeah, no retreads….Nelson Agholor…

  8. LargoBuc Says:

Maybe bring in Ginn or Harry Douglas or even Torey Smith. After VJax and Evans there is a steep decline in talent. Louis Murphy’s OK but we need depth and talent at receiver. If you can bring in Ginn who’s also a return man which we really need stability at then great.

  9. bucs4lyfe Says:

bucs fans just don’t get it at all…..every year begging for other teams scraps but rag on lovie for picking up Michael Johnson and oneil cousins and Anthony Collins. do you really think jacoby jones, harry douglas and ted ginn are going to have any bigger of an impact than those guys i mean honestly? fantasy football is ruining football, draft players and let them make a name for themselves. how man fans in the world can say they followed jacoby jones career? he came into the league and returned kicks with speed and style and was electric to a point but he’s not that guy anymore and not worth the money he’ll want

  10. robert 9 Says:

normally i would agree with no retreads, but in the returner category we tried everything in the book last year. just shows it is a real specialty. in this case, whether its ginn or jacoby jones, i would be fine with either. we can’t afford to go into this year and cross our fingers like last year at the returner position.

  11. al121976 Says:

    Jacoby Jones is available

  12. Jameis Winston Says:

Excerpt from my movie gang! I am getting advice from my buddy Bill Clinton! I did not have sexual relations with that woman!!

“Kinsman says that the man ignored the roommate’s pleas, and took her to the bathroom, which could be locked from the inside. There, he pinned her head against the tiled floor with his hand, and continued to rape her. When he finished, the man allegedly said, “You can leave now.”

Lightheaded and with no idea where she was, Kinsman says she let the man drop her off on his scooter at a recognizable intersection—because she didn’t want him to know where she lived. Kinsman reported the rape, and was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare where a rape kit was performed. Semen was found on the woman’s body.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ginn makes more sense than Douglas…..if we bring in a WR…..he must also be a PR/KR…..

  14. Skyline Crew Says:

You’re stupid Jameis Winston. Why even bring up that crap in this thread.

  15. jabba Says:

    Jacoby Jones. That is all.

  16. Skyline Crew Says:

If we can get him cheap then I don’t have a problem with it. I would rather see Sims as the return man as I don’t see him as our RB anytime soon. Rainey was better than both RBs last year and who is to say Martin can’t do it either. Whomever the #3 RB is should have a part in returning. Same as our #4-6 receivers.

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

In the draft you have J.J. Nelson who ran a 4.28 and you have Phillip Dorsett who ran a 4.33

  18. Arealbucsfan Says:

So the Fins jus released Brian Hartline. Good receiver that can play the slot

  19. Skyline Crew Says:

Here is a question. What do you guys think about getting Justin Houston as an OLB? He is only 26. That is if the Chiefs don’t apply a franchise tag to him.

  20. Skyline Crew Says:

Also, I wouldn’t mind getting Bryan Bulaga either. He is 25 and can start at RT instantly.

  21. Jacko101 Says:

Because he’s going home like Lebron to Cleveland.

    The amazing double standard:

If Lovie does nothing, he gets ragged on for not trying.
If he does something but it doesn’t work out, he gets ragged on for not knowing what he’s doing.

You’ve just joined the list, along with “Ray Rice” and “Greg Schiano” of people whose comments I don’t even read.

Its obvious (to most, at least) that you’re not really that person, so why even pretend?

In the draft you have J.J. Nelson who ran a 4.28 and you have Phillip Dorsett who ran a 4.33

Jeff Demps also ran track and was the fastest player on the team….

Here is a question. What do you guys think about getting Justin Houston as an OLB? He is only 26. That is if the Chiefs don’t apply a franchise tag to him.

He also has only played in a 3-4 his whole career… So why would you want him to come here and play completely different role than he’s never played?

If he did come here and didn’t have success, would you then label him as a bust or blame Lovie for not picking the right people for his scheme?

Also, I wouldn’t mind getting Bryan Bulaga either. He is 25 and can start at RT instantly.

    Translation:

I know that name, I hope he plays for my team.

fantasy football is ruining football, draft players and let them make a name for themselves.

AS a Fantasy Football player, I couldn’t agree more with your statement.

  23. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Celly

This is a thread about return men. In the draft those are two fastest guys. They aren’t good for anything else because they probably aren’t going to make it as receivers. Sorry that putting logic first makes you hate the comments section.

Also, I had never heard of Bulaga until I was reading through the FA list on NFL.com and saw how young he was and that he could start instantly. I don’t follow other teams so don’t know other teams players that well. Especially Linemen. You really are full of yourself though today aren’t ya?

  24. 911bucs Says:

I’m not so sure Ginn is the answer, averaged 19 yards on kick returns and virtually invisible in the receiving game for AZ Cards plus fumbled a costly kickoff in the wildcard game.

  25. bucrightoff Says:

Always be known as the guy who got hurt celebrating a TD in the national title game. He’s a luxury player cause all he can do is return kicks, terrible receiver and blocker. So unless he’s dirt cheap, no thanks.

  26. Skyline Crew Says:

ALso, I didn’t realize that by Houston couldn’t play in other defensive systems. If you are one dimensional in the NFL that isn’t a good thing. If he can’t be an edge rusher in other schemes then no I wouldn’t want him. If he couldn’t adapt and play in a 4-3 then yes I would say he was a bust at that position. Obviously he is a one dimensional player if he can’t play a 4-3. An edge rusher is an edge rusher. What happens if the Chiefs get a new DC and they go with a 4-3. I guess Houston is out of a job because he isn’t a professional and doesn’t know how to adapt? Good to know.

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

Here you go Celly, the supposed top 6 4-3 OLBs.

You might see the Falcons cut loose of Lovie’s ex player as well. Falcons have a lot of cap space but they might think the guy is overpaid and with a new coach, there are no ties there.

  30. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

Ginn is a good depth player. I would rather go after Jacoby Jones or even Devin Hester is ATL releases him as well. Ginn Jr dropped a lot of passes. In a perfect world Lovie would bring Randall Cobb here promising to either have Mariotta or Winston throwing to him but I somehow see that as being just toooooo good to become a reality.

  31. Skyline Crew Says:

Cobb could get the franchise tag.

  32. LargoBuc Says:

Ginn provides depth at receiver(which we lack. If Evans or VJax get hurt we’re screwed.) And can also be a return man which we never established last year.

  33. Another J Says:

I think Ginn would be a good pickup as a return specialist, and an emergency receiver.

  34. Cody Says:

Tyler Lockett frm K State…all time leading receiver at K state and a really good return man…I saw someone mention Bulaga, he’s decent but often injured… has he played a full season yet??

    @Celly

This is a thread about return men. In the draft those are two fastest guys.

Valid statement. Now, I ask you, have you done done any research to see if any of those 2 guys have ever returned kicks before or fielded a punt? Straight line speed in shorts an a t-shirt does not equate to a good returner.

As an example, Michael Spurlock ran a 4.41 40 at his pro-day (per rotoworld) and Clifton Smith averaged a ~4.56 40 (per nfldraftscout). Those are probably the 2 best returners in recent Buc history.

Would you have discredited them before giving them a shot due to their 40 times?

Also, I had never heard of Bulaga until I was reading through the FA list on NFL.com and saw how young he was and that he could start instantly.

So, you’ve never seen him play before and didn’t know about him before seeing the list, but you determine that you want him…

Did you also want Michael Johnson last year? He was on the list as well…

    Per NFL.com – Top 101 NFL Free Agents 2014:

    3) Michael Johnson, DE, Cincinnati Bengals: Johnson’s sacks took a dip in 2013, but disruption still counts as production. In addition to providing stout run defense, Johnson was among the leading defensive ends in batted passes and quarter hurries.

    45) Anthony Collins, OT, Cincinnati Bengals: Perhaps the NFL’s premier swing tackle over the past half-decade, Collins has flashed plus pass protection every time he’s gotten a shot at extended playing time.

Things that make you go, “hmm”

You really are full of yourself though today aren’t ya?

    Not just today…

ALso, I didn’t realize that by Houston couldn’t play in other defensive systems. If you are one dimensional in the NFL that isn’t a good thing. If he can’t be an edge rusher in other schemes then no I wouldn’t want him. If he couldn’t adapt and play in a 4-3 then yes I would say he was a bust at that position. I guess Houston is out of a job because he isn’t a professional and doesn’t know how to adapt? Good to know.

    1. No one said he couldn’t play in any other system. The FACTS show, though, that he has only played in one system his entire career. Why take the chance on someone and HOPE that they pan out for your system. Also, you never said, “lets get Justin Houston as an edge rusher”. Your specific statement was, “What do you think about getting Justin Houston as an OLB?”. A 3-4 OLB and a 4-3 OLB have 2 completely different roles.

    2. “An edge rusher is an edge rusher”. You can’t really be serious with that statement.

Here you go Celly, the supposed top 6 4-3 OLBs.

    Sean Weatherspoon
    Akeem Ayers

    Brandon Marshall

Now, that’s putting some research into your post. Well done.

Of those 6 people you mentioned, Bruce Carter would be the ideal option, given his familiarity with the scheme we run here and his success IN that scheme.

If you really want my email address, you can click my name and fill out the contact form. It’s more of a frustration with the comment section versus being upset at it. So much misinformation being spread and proclaimed as truth.

You do know that Cobb is looking for ~$9M/yr, right?

    Skyline Crew Says:
    February 27th, 2015 at 3:54 pm

Cobb could get the franchise tag.

Per CBSsports, the projected franchise tag for WR is expected to be around $12.31M (based on the salary cap at $141M). Given the majority of his work being in the slot and as a returner, I don’t envision Ted Thompson giving up that much money for him.

Could it happen? Of course. But I don’t see it as likely.

Trade Goldson and Collins to Atlanta straight up for Devin Hester. (include some $ if needed to sweeten the pot – he -he). That would improve the team 3X with 1 move. 🙂

Valid statement. Now, I ask you, have you done done any research to see if any of those 2 guys have ever returned kicks before or fielded a punt? Straight line speed in shorts an a t-shirt does not equate to a good returner.
    *********
Yes, which is why I mentioned their names.

“Dorsett said several have talked to him about being a return man immediately when he gets into the NFL.” – NFL.com

As for J.J. Nelson “His 38.3 yards per kick return and four kick returns for touchdowns were tops in the nation. ”

Both have done the job and that is what I envision them doing early on in their career. I don’t think J.J. can become a WR unless he puts on weight. Dorsett could become a potential slot receiver.

  39. Brandon Says:

Tyler Lockett of K State and Jamison Crowder of Duke are far younger and cheaper options and have perhaps far better potential. Both should be available into the 3rd round with Crowder looking more like a 4th rounder.

  40. Brandon Says:

Damn, Celly! I clicked on your name and your website/resume is awesome. Freaking on point! That’s better and smoother than 99% of the web sites I’ve ever been to… great job. I wish I was the head of a company because I’d hire you in a second.

  41. Not ...... "The Kevin" Says:

We do still have the rookie from last year Herron. He was a ROOKIE thrown into that mess. Jury is still out on him.

  42. Skyline Crew Says:

How many Locketts from KEY do we have to draft?

  43. Skyline Crew Says:

    KSU*

  44. MadMax Says:

JJ Nelson, especially if we can get him with a 5th.

  45. bucfaninaz Says:

I live in Arizona and can say that Ginn did not live up to expectations here on the Cardinals and that is why he was let go. I really see no reason to be excited about him or to pursue him in free agency.

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Ted Ginn is NOT the answer. Just because it is suggested, that doesn’t make it the right move.

Yeah we could have had him last year…with his 196 yards, no touchdowns and 2 fumbles.

Good lord, at least make good suggestions. Ginn turns 30 in a month or so. For a productive WR, that would be okay. For a kick returner that has been so-so at best? No so much.

His fumbling issue alone should rule him out…but at least look at the results he gets…which is ZERO.

  47. Phillip Says:

    @celly

What you conveniently forget to add with the Cobb potential deal is that we do have an aging receiver with little to no guaranteed money as what Cobb is asking for who might I add is a pr/kr and deadly in the slot and can play the outside wr position as well.. So you can also ask yourself did you study the people before speaking? Coming on here and quoting people to just them down doesn’t make you cool dude.

What fans want on here doesn’t matter as its their OPINION and they can express it all they want. Fact of the matter is none of us choose who the Bucs sign, draft, cut, or trade. But you know what the Bucs will do right?
