Before last night’s Super Bowl, Seahawks guard James Carpenter had started 40+ NFL games over his first four seasons.
So he’s got a feel for tough guys in the NFL trenches.
Joe talked to Carpenter in Phoenix about what kind of leadership effect Buccaneers defensive tackle Clinton McDonald had on him when McDonald played for Seattle.
But the funny thing was Carpenter wouldn’t talk to Joe about leadership.
When it came to McDonald, all Carpenter could do was remember how much trouble McDonald gave him.
“That was a strong dude, man. Really powerful. His main thing was power. He was the strongest dude I pretty much ever blocked,” Carpenter said.
Joe could type more about what Carpenter said, but it all would just revolve around the burst and strength of McDonald, who had five sacks for the Bucs last year.
No wonder McDonald’s old teammates called him “truck driver.”

I like Clinton. I also think Verner will have a much better season next year.

Clinton McDonald is a grade-A badass. Between him, Spence, and McCoy, we don’t have to worry about the interior of our defensive line.

Whats up with people thinking Verner didnt have a good year? He had a pretty good one. Slightly Better than Revis last year

Verner had a good year. Plus, the hidden beauty of Verner is that he has five years of NFL experience and he’s only 26 years old.
Can you even imagine how good Verner is going to be over the next four or five seasons?

Picture Williams with this group and you pretty much can guarantee our D line will be top 5 or higher. One thing I noticed over and over again in last nights game was D line penetration forcing the QB’s to throw faster.
How many times were we winning in the 4th quarter last year, but our D couldnt stop the other team from scoring and winning? Pass rush and Williams can fix that from the beginning of the 2015 season!

Picture Williams sitting at home every year until he hits free-agency and goes elsewhere. We need a QB to get over the hump. Those calling for trades are living in the past.

Verner had a good year? Hmm, okay. Julio Jones and Steve Smith say hello. I really hope your not basing this on garbage as Revis’s 2 Ints. Wow! Revis went back to the AFC East bc there aren’t any receivers in that division. Sammy Watkins and mike Wallace just got there. He got torched in the NFC south but that’s none of my business though.

So you guys think drafting a rookie QB will get us over the “hump”. Know this, that QB wont be starting anytime soon! So we sit a 1st rounder qb, maybe go O line with our 2nd and DE with our 3rd….and we’re probably picking top 5 next draft. Thats not getting over a hump….thats drafting for need and IMO, ANY QB in this draft isnt worth #1 overall!
Na, I’d rather take Williams, maybe pick up another QB later since 3rd and 6th round SB champion qb’s can obviously be found in later rounds, and go with Glennon or sign a QB. Pass rush is the QB KILLER! My opinion is we need that more than a QB who may or may not make it.

Besides, with GMC being injury prone, if he goes down, then that kills our D! Williams can step right in his place. Depth, if anything, has been our most glaring weak point.

Exactly. Put Leonard Williams next to those guys at LDE and then Lovie will start to have the horses that he said recently he needs to run his defense

We can wait and get a DL in the 1st round next year…We have to upgrade of QB position…Yeah Williams is nasty but or QB position is in dire straights…
“Let’s not over think this”… look at our roster, Glennon & McCown are the only 2 QB’s on the roster…We have to Take a QB, preferably Winston…He’s better right now than any QB on our roster…With NFL coaching, a good training camp and preseason I think Winston can easily beat out McCown and Glennon…

Lack of sleep effects thinking. Shameis Loseton and Dorial Beckham are off a lot of teams draft boards. Browns want Shameis and Dorial Beckham to pair with Johnny Rehab.

McDonald was a great FA pick up considering he only makes $3m per year.
I still can’t get over Schiano and Dom just letting Bennett walk away for basically nothing. He signed with Seattle for $5M last year and signed a 4 year deal this year averaging $7.1M. That is seriously underpaid for a guy now considered one of the best DLinemen in the game.

McDonald also missed two games and McCoy missed three. Both MCCoy and Michael Johnson played with broken hands during the season. another starter, Adrian Clayborn, played only one game during the season due to an injury.
Wish there was a way to keep these guys healthy.
McDonald was a FA we hit on, too.

Im not sold on Winston or Mariota. Lovie is a defensive coach and I’m not sure we had anyone on the offensive side (coach wise) that could judge talent. Our o-line is horrendous and we had a kid just out of diapers being OC Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach. I still believe with a good o-line Glennon could be a good option. He has shown the ability to be right on the money with throws when given time. To say Glennon or McCown for that matter are not capable, I would think you would have to put a competent o-line in front of them first. There is not a quarterback in the league who would have had consistent success with our line. History tends to repeat itself. Can someone name a quarterback drafted in the first round who had success here. I hear crickets.
