“What Idiot Would Pay Dashon Goldson?”

January 28th, 2015
Former NFL safety and current NBC Sports analyst Rodney Harrison blasted Bucs S Dashon Goldson.

Former NFL safety and current NBC Sports analyst Rodney Harrison blasted Dashon Goldson.

Among the many NFL national media types and former NFL players Joe talked to yesterday – over 30 at last count – was former Chargers and Patriots safety Rodney Harrison.

The NBC Sunday Night Football analyst will, of course, be part of the Peacock Network’s hosting of pregame and postgame talent Sunday. And Harrison loves to talk defense, including safety play.

When Joe got a chance to ask Harrison about Bucs safety Dashon Goldson, Harrison leaned back in his chair, took a deep breath, looked around as not to offend anyone, and unloaded.

Harrison made it perfectly clear he is no fan of Goldson, who he believes should have his picture pasted on walls in post offices for sticking up Team Glazer.

“When they paid him that money, I just shook my head,” Harrison said as he began his tirade. “You see the problem is – I will tell you what the problem is – these personnel people, they go off of what is popular. What idiot would pay Dashon Goldson seven-, eight-, nine-million dollars a year? Are you kidding me? Because he made a couple of hits?

“It’s just that ‘I’m trying to appease the fans. I’m trying to make a splash in free agency. I’m trying to do something to get the fans excited. So we overpaid for a guy.’

“Look at the Miami Dolphins and what they did with [Mike Wallace]. Who the heck gives him $15 million? Those are the types of things that really set your franchise back. Because you are spending money on these guys that are overrated. [Goldson] was surrounded by a lot of talent [in San Francisco]. He can’t get it done when you’re ‘The Man.’“

Joe understands where Harrison is coming from. The Bucs even have much worse examples than Goldson, namely left tackle Anthony Collins and ghostly defensive end Michael Johnson.

Yeah, the Bucs won free agency last year. And the only thing that got them was winning the Chase for Jameis and a Leeman Bennett-like season.

  2. Dick2111 Says:

Harrison’s right. And the Bucs have done that time and time and time again over the years.

Trying to constantly ‘buy talent’ through free agency instead of drafting intelligently and then developing talent through good coaching is a prescription for … oh ya, getting a high draft choice year after year after year.

  3. Johnny Dejay Says:

    @Buc’n Enough Says: Rockstar=Idiot

I second those sentiments. Mark Dominick destroyed this franchise with bad personnel decisions. Imagine a Defensive Line of Claiborne, Sheldon Richardson or Star Lotulelei, Gerald McCoy, and Michael Bennett! Instead, we got Dashon and Revis in the secondary. (And don’t even get me started on Mark Barron.)

  4. Kalind Says:

So far, I’m not too shot in the a$$ with Licht. His first draft was a giant ‘meh’ after Evans. Looks a lot like the McCoy draft so far. AND bonus: even if he is a good talent evaluator, and good cap manager, and good team builder, he’s had his…important bits hacked off by that half-wit head coach.

  5. SteveK Says:

Dominick also drafted Josh Freeman. We are still feeling the effect from that.

I hope we cut Michael Johnson, Anthony Collins and The Hawk. We can pay Donkey Kong Suh to come here in FA.

  6. Buc-O's 82 Says:

And its not only Rock star responsible for making these decisions in the past, but also Our current GM for carrying on that legacy of filling our current team with the overrated.

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

Hopefully “The Hawk” will just fly away. go somewhere else and bilk some other team out of its money.

  8. Lunchbag Al Says:

I remember ‘dough boy’ Shaun King; the Bucs Quarterback that couldn’t score enough points against the Rams which held to only 11 in the 99 NFC Championship game. He went off after the Bucs signed The Hawk. He was not happy with the money spent on him. He predicted this. Credit where credit is due.

  9. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Another “big” name used to try and please the fans. You know what would please us the fans, WINS! Let him go, take that money and resign LVD, #54 deserves the raise.

  10. BucNasty!!! Says:

Justin Houston!!!! Pay the man. And while you till got alil cash left pay the kraken on a 1 to 2 year flier low Mon ey high incentives get him from suspension half way thru the season our defense is golden

  11. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Without reaching all the way back to Freddie (Phil) Krueger there were problems with all our Gm’s. McKay was a cap killer. Bruce (All Mighty) Allen was Jon Gruden’s lap dog. Mark (Jock star) Dominik had all kinds of problems. Take your pick.
I don’t remember us ever having a GREAT Gm. Owner either for that matter. (Sorry Mr. Glazer. You fleeced all of Tampa. Not just us fans)
I have an idea! Why don’t we surround The Hawk with a bunch of talent then maybe he will shine like he did with the Niners. Nah! That wouldn’t work would it?
It’s not my money. Spend the sh*t out of it! We need a winner! Now!

  12. BucFanForever Says:

I can answer his question(even though it was rhetorical):

A team that is desperate after coming within a few yards of setting an all time record for passing yards allowed during a season.

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

I at this point, it is amazing if anyone thinks that Mark Dominick did a good job. He has been exposed! And I still say that if he did not get over-bid for Abert Haynsworth by Washington, Dominick would have secured the crown as ” The worst GM in NFL History”!

  14. ddneast Says:

Can’t understand why Lovie can’t motivate all these high paid superstars to become All Pros again by delivering some Knute Rockne type half time speeches or by slapping them around ala George Patton.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have changed Goldson’s nickname from Hawk to “Squawk” because he has been all talk…
I wouldn’t even offer a restructure…just move on. We have guys like Wright & McDougald that outperform him regularly.

As for Dominick, the record is crystal clear and should go without argument….he was an utter failure as a GM….we have the spoils to show for it.

I am unimpressed with Licht so far…..but don’t know how much authority he has. I also am willing to wait to see how this draft class turns out. A couple of the free agents may turn out to be OK…..I look for Michael Johnson & Brandon Meyers to improve their play next year.

  16. Joseph Mamma Says:

Of course Rodney is saying it’s a dumb move now, it didn’t pay off a few years down the road. But I didn’t here anyone saying it was a dumb move at the time. I did hear that we overpaid him, but the consensus was that we were signing a star in his prime. Of course it looks like a dumb move now and any idiot with a microphone can chime in. So I say brilliant insight Harrison.

  17. nybucsfan424 Says:

yea, what is the deal why hasn’t Lvd been resign yet? wtf? lets get it done and give the fans some hope ” some”

  18. JFF Says:

    Keepin it real Rodney!

  19. HolyBuc Says:

Can’t resign LVD till the new year starts in March.

  20. BrianDorry55 Says:

Hated this deal when we made it….you don’t pay $8 million a year for a safety unless he can do everything.

  21. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Rodney Harrison is a solid analyst who helps keep Father Dungy in line on the Sunday night broadcasts.

I think he brings a special perspective to this particular conversation. Not just because he played the same position but because he did it with New England.

We may all hate Bill Belicheat but you have to give the man props for how he has managed all the winning depressing his draft order yet still manages to keep a talented team.

It’s because as Harrison has just pointed out, Belicheat does not ever get suckered into stupid contracts overpaying free agents and he seems to never lose in a trade. Of course that’s from a Buc’s fan’s perspective and he’s basically raped us over the years.

Harrison knows what he is talking about. He’s seen how it’s supposed to be done in New England.

  22. OB Says:

If the GM is picking, he must have input from the HC, if the HC is the dominant one, he must have input from the GM and staff, so none of these are one man alone and the SCOUTS have to bear some of the blame also.

What ////Harrison said about being surround by good players to make you shine is so true of any team, any position. While we think GMC is great now, wait until he is surrounded by good players on the DL and then watch LVD if he is surrounded by good LBs, same with Banks, and the receivers, backs, with a new OL and QB. Then we all think the owners, GM, and HC are geniuses like when we won the Super Bowl.

  23. nybucsfan424 Says:

@ holybuc thanks wasn’t aware of that. Just don’t wanna see him leave !!

  24. Bobby M. Says:

So the “RockStar” let our most productive DE walk, overpaid for Goldson…Next article “where is Josh freeman now”…

  25. Eric Says:

I’m not a big rock star fan but that Freeman pick looked good for a long time until the melt down

I can’t say he should have anticipated such a thing.

    Hindsight is sooooooo easy.

  26. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Just curious Eric. If the Bucs pick Jameis and he melts down or does something stupid off the field will we look back and say we have the benefit of hindsight?

    Just askin’?

  27. Pickgrin Says:

It’s unfortunate that Goldson has not been able to play on Sundays like he is paid. 2 full years now and he has shown so little. I can’t really even remember 1 great play that he’s made in 2 years aside from a few big hits – some of which drew penalties.
I heard numerous references from coaches this past year about what a good “leader” he is and how he teaches the younger players what to do and how to carry themselves in the NFL – but if he’s starting and not making plays during games – then what good is his advice to younger players?

Reminds me of the McCown as a “good” bridge to a rookie QB idea I keep hearing tossed around – what’s he gonna say? Do as I say – not as I play….

  28. Jordan Says:

Don’t Expect Bucs to Cut Michael Johnson as he is guaranteed 7 of his 9 million dollars next year. Cutting McCown, Collins, Goldson and Vjax(after june 1) and Koenen will give the Bucs 51.1 million dollars in Cap space.

  29. JVNootz Says:

Yet another reason the Bucs won’t take as many big risks down the road. Be it through drafting potential character messes, headcases, or signing players to fat contracts based on one or two seasons of decent play. You live and you learn. Goldson has not been THAT bad. One has to believe that his hits over the middle made teams and players think twice on passes between the hash marks. But $8 mill for an enforcer was too much. Godson’s play improved some when Barron was traded tho. Lol

  30. Eric Says:

    @stpete,

yep, that is what hindsight means.

Just like if we drafted Mariota and he was unable to convert his talents to the NFL. At that point we would have actual data rather than supposition.

    hindsight is 100%

  31. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

I fully agree with Harrison. I want Goldson gone.

  32. Patrickbucs Says:

Bucs are pretty much forced to overpay free agents to hit the newly agree upon CBA salary cap minimum. We have drafted so poorly we rarely if ever sign our own guys to big deals outside if McCoy and soon to be David.

If Revis isn’t worth $16 million how is he worth $8 million? I can’t believe I’m actually looking forward to the cuts.

  33. biff barker Says:

A 2-14 perennial basement dweller will always overpay for FA’s.

We need to be able to find more of the Lansanah and Jack Smith types.

So I’m guessing the players that worked out for us were the doing of Schiano, right?

    /sarcasm

Dominick also drafted Josh Freeman. We are still feeling the effect from that.

I hope we cut Michael Johnson, Anthony Collins and The Hawk. We can pay Donkey Kong Suh to come here in FA.

Freeman led us to a winning season PLUS put up franchise numbers, only to have his head coach draft a guy he’s been horny for since highschool just to have him take 50% of the snaps in the offseason.

If we’re feeling the effect from anything, its from the almight “talent evaluator” that everyone loves so much, for some reason…the same guy whos overall career win percentage is still worse than Lovie’s and who is currently out of football right now.

Also, how much sense would it make to cut guys when its clear we’re lacking depth. I’m guessing you’re just looking for another reason to blame Lovie if we do bad next year. “He cut all those guys, we could’ve used the depth”.

AND….you complain about bringing in name guys, yet you want a guy that is going to want GMC money?
You complain that the Glazers never spend money, then you expect them to tie up THAT much money in 2 positions?

    Please, make up your mind.

And I still say that if he did not get over-bid for Abert Haynsworth by Washington, Dominick would have secured the crown as ” The worst GM in NFL History”!

A “Realist” would come to the realization that (HAS BEEN STATED OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again) that the Bucs offered more money but Albert chose Washington because of the market and the team.

Albert has stated this numerous times before….but I guess we’ll just call him a liar because it makes your case look better against Dominick.

  35. The Buc Realist Says:

    @celly

Washington offered more guaranteed money in the contract. Dominick’s offer was more, but had more funny money at the end of the contract. I was abbreviating the point because most already know this and understand this.

Albert also said that he selected Washington over The Bucs because if he came to Tampa he would always be on his boat!
    https://www.joebucsfan.com/?p=57153

Also, I do not need my case against Dominick too look better, I will let his work stand on its own!

  36. biff barker Says:

Time to lick our wounds and move on folks. Tandy should be up for the job by now.

McCown and Collins should also be sent down the road too. Johnson, probably the worst FA signing since Derek Ward, will get another paid year off as a rotation guy.

  37. SteveK Says:

    Oh Celly,

    Thanks for the response!

If we are going to pay GMC type money to a DT, it might as well be Suh. Suh is right bejhind JJ Watt on my list of interior D-Linemen. GMC needs help.

My dream scenario: Suh, GMC and Leonard Williams on the same D-Line. Hello pass rush!

    Dominick was terrible.

  38. ddneast Says:

Let’s not forget how Dummynick overpaid Quincy Black and Mike Williams as well.
We were so lucky to unload Williams and his salary cap on Buffalo last year.
L n L get hit pretty heavy, as they should, for their mistakes in FA, but they should also get credit when they do something right and getting rid of Williams before he totally tanked was one of them.

  39. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He will be cut before his cap hit goes into effect. No way they pay him that much. There is some really good Safeties the the FA class this year. We can sign way better players for equal or less value. Good riddance!

  40. Joe Says:

Let’s not forget how Dummynick overpaid Quincy Black

Dominik turned out to be right on Quincy Black. Once he got coached up (Bryan Cox) Black was a decent player.

    —————————————————————————

Barely decent. Yea – I know – it’s not Dom’s fault Quincy got hurt – but who pays $6M per year to a “decent” SAM LBer anyway?

Your ongoing defense of the terrible job Marc Dominik did is laughable Joe. We have sucked since Gruden was fired and Dom (who was the 1 common thread) is largely responsible. We are still dealing with the repercussions of Dom’s many bad decisions and will be for at least a couple more years…

  42. iamkingsu Says:

What makes it 10 times worst is that they tried to pair him with Barron lolololol. That was the knock on him in san Fran. is that he couldn’t defend the deep pass smh. We all know what the knock on Barron his rookie year was smh. That was supposed to be our last line of defense you’ll!!! How do these idiots get these type of jobs??

  43. Mike10 Says:

Mr. Rodney Harrison, sir, man, you’re DOB… dead on (fully inflated of all 13 oz) balls!

Don’t stop there tho bro, keep preachin’!! Go back to after we found our wallets (aka we traded Christiano across the pond)… We have overpaid everyone based on market hype!

What you call that Corner we got from the Browns Joe – the other aderrall junkie? Or the RB from the Giants (Ward?), or Mike Clayton, or the LB we resigned because of his size (Black), or how about even McCoy (who’s contract makes no sense considering the top DL in the league is getting paid less and will be named MVP).

I’d rather have Yzerman in charge after reading a “football for dummies” than a smile-first guy like Rockstar or Licht…

… However, perfect case, we restructure Goldson’s contract and he stays here – I’m over the shipping out talent routine when the “next man up” shBLOWS

  44. White Tiger Says:

Well, Dashon can’t be held against either of the current talent evaluators – but Michael Johnson certainly is on Lovie…easy to believe Schiano could be taken in by Goldson – but how do you fool the ONE guy everyone says, KNOWS what he was doing on defense?!
