Jameis Watch: “Elite NFL Player”

November 4th, 2014

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s regular nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

How good do some think Florida State uber-quarterback Jameis Winston will be on the NFL level? One SEC honk believes Winston will be a big-time NFL quarterback.

As we all know, those in the tank for the SEC believe no one can ever play football better than a player in the SEC. Why, asks the SEC mouthpiece, would a stud player ever play for anyone else because they don’t play football in those other conferences.

So it surprised Joe that CBS SEC analyst Gary Danielson, who is completely and totally in the tank for SEC teams and players, came racing Monday to prop up Winston. The former NFL quarterback made his weekly appearance with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on the station that bears the host’s name, “Mad Dog Radio,” part of the family of sports channels heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio, and spoke so highly of Winston he dared invoke Dan Marino’s name.

“I think [Winston] will be an elite NFL player,” Danielson boasted.

Russo was taken aback and immediately asked about Winston’s notorious off-field scrapes with the law and Danielson waved them off.

“Dan Marino had the same things talked about him when he was coming out of college,” Danielson said. “Teams that passed on him regretted it for 15 years.”

Danielson does have a point. Marino was thought to be too much of a party hound and there were strong rumors that Marino was fond of the nose candy, an allegation he has adamantly denounced to this day. As a result, Marino, arguably the best quarterback in that draft, fell all the way to the Dolphins.

Evan his quarterback-needy, hometown Pittsburgh Steelers passed on him which did nothing but fan the flames of the rumors.

    Jail Bird….

  2. BucFanForever Says:

Touchdown Machine Winston, or what was the point of losing seven of the last eight?

ME13 + Winston = Job security for the head coach.

  3. WalkdaPlank Says:

    #inFAMOUSforJAMEIS

  4. bucrightoff Says:

Didn’t he say the same thing about Manziel and Tebow?

  5. bucbucbuc Says:

Has BUST written all over him. Marino’s issues were not the same – being a partyhound is one thing, but doing all the dumb things Jameis has done is another. Name a successful QB in the NFL who has had the same type of track record off the field as Jameis. We’re better off getting Mariota or nabbing a QB in the second round.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

    bucrightoff,

Took the words out of my mouth. Danielson was a big Tebow honk!

  7. Terry4505 Says:

I came away from the Louisville game decidedly unimpressed.

  8. OneLove Says:

He’s gonna be a BUST! Just like Jemarcus Russell!!

  9. Pvine Says:

Best QB in college football. He is a winner, for sure. Pro ball is another story.

  10. OB Says:

    Joe

Couple of thoughts, who did what Jameis did at the same age, so the “opportunities to fail” may not have been there, also are their backgrounds the same?

I think he is a great QB, but a risky person who requires someone to mentor and lead him, just like all of the thousand like him that joined the service. Most made great trooper some did not.

It is a crap shoot but so is life.

  11. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

    Winston, nuff said…………………………………

  12. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Going to laugh when Winston proves all the doubters wrong.

    Don’t Winston 4 Jameis!!

  13. Kodaslc Says:

Winston is immature ! But he is what 20 years old ,with the It factor !!! Even with him being in the news , and off field problems come sat when the big lights come on he doesn’t “Shrink” in the moment I’ve been watching the Bucs Since 92 and we have never had a QB with the It factor !! Also being a huge FSU fan only Qb that when he’s down big I believe he can come back and he does weekly .The Bucs get down by 3 and we don’t think we can come back !And he is a lot brighter than he looks or acts . Kid has been able to read defense and knows where to go with the ball since he was an 8th grader . He has been training to be an Elite QB his entire life !

  14. JBuc Says:

BucBucBuc, please tell us the awful things he has done that spell bust to you? 21 straight games won as a freshman and sophomore, all academic ACC, 1 Heisman Trophy, starter for top ranked baseball team. Never been accused of alcohol or drug abuse even with all the scrutiny. I don’t see how people can’t just respect his ability.

I get it if you’re a Gator or from Auburn and hate all things FSU a, but to not respect his talent is just stupid.

  15. Mr. Patrick Says:

Jameis will be the MVP of the Florida Prison League

  16. SuperSam Says:

Nah, pass oh him. Take Marriotta.

  17. Jon Says:

Mariota is the second coming of RG3. He may be a bit better than RG3 but as a bucs fan I would rather see someone like Jameis. All of his off the field issues since the assault accusation and shoplifting are blown out of proportion. A college kid would say the things he said and get away with it but since hes under the microscope he is scrutinized.

  18. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston is flipping fantastic. All the doubters hate FSU or are simply jealous of his talent. All of his supposed crimes are just figments of wild imaginations. If you don’t swoon over Winston’s athletic prowess, then you are just dumb. As dumb as everything I just said above.

  19. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

A black boy in Florida killed for wearing a hoodie but the culprit is not even mentioned anymore. A black boy in St. Louis was shot and killed in the middle of the street (IN FRONT OF A BLACK COMMUNITY) and the officer in question was hidden for his protection, oh my. About 40 black people were killed over a weekend in Chicago and it is not even talked about (imagine if it were 40 white people). Black folks lives are not valued in this world like the lives of any other nationality and that is fact not just race card rhetoric from me. Television portrays a different version of the Black and White dynamic today a better more commercial version but in reality it is false advertisement. Alas, all I can do is be a good citizen and father and hope that I am never in a situation where its my word against a white persons word. Because I’d be found guilty every time regardless if I did it or not, that just the way it is.

  20. Doc Says:

How many of you guy’s every met Winston or Mariota. Would be hard to form an opinion on someone you never met.

  21. Mr. Patrick Says:

So despite his on-field talent, is this really the kind of guy that you want to be the face of your franchise? The guy has Ryan Leaf written all over him

  22. bucbucbuc Says:

    @JBuc

There’s no questioning what he’s done in college, but keep in mind he has been surrounded by elite talent at FSU (I’m not an FSU hater, I’m a UCLA alum). Sure he’s only 20, but there is a level of maturity and composure OFF the field that elite quarterbacks typically possess. I just don’t see it from him and I don’t think it’s all of a sudden going to change when he goes to the NFL. If he was groomed behind a veteran for a couple of years maybe, but we all know he will start from Day 1.

  23. JBuc Says:

its a good thing social media wasn’t around when the likes of Peyton Manning and Dan Marino were going through the draft process. Do a quick google search on Manning and his treatment of a trainer while at Tennessee and ask yourself if you would you hold him to the same standard as Jameis. If your answer is no then you might np be a ra its red neck.

  24. Buc1987ForJameis Says:

    The Black Tom Brady!

  25. Brent Says:

Jamiies or mariotta whoever is better we gotta take. Then load up on o-linemen. If l&l don’t take one of these guys it’s time to show up at one buc place and run these guys out of town. Media up here in NYC says jets grabbing one of them for sure..

  26. Skyline Crew Says:

After his hearing we will see if he is still playing.

  27. Buc1987ForJameis Says:

Newbucsfan!!!….there’s 10 times more black on black crime than white on black crime in this country and it never gets reported.

  28. Buc1987ForJameis Says:

Wait….there’s a hearing? Please do post the link…

  29. Brent Says:

@newbucsfan, those Chicago killings have been highly publicized for several years. I lived in berwyn suburb in 2004 and 2005. Cops fear for their lives going in those communities. Situation will never change unless people like you stop blaming the media and cops and blame the real culprits — the uneducated law breaking scumbag thugs terrorizing those neighborhoods.

  30. David Says:

@Newbuc….not to mention, the alleged victim was white. He is being labeled a thug for saying a meme that was started by a white guy. Lol. Some people are just hypocrites. I’m not, I don’t necessarily care wat his freaking race is I have black friends, white friends and I’m married to mixed asian/white woman. So i have Filipino family and friends. All I care about is treating people with respect and demand the same.

  31. Greg Says:

Winston for sure. Fsu doesn’t have the talent it did a year ago and there still undefeated. The man knows how to win. He may not b the the guy u want ur daughter to marry but he’s a winner something we haven’t had n a long time. Mariaota is like a kap and Vick clone and more about his legs and we all have seen how many super bowls they have won. Dez Bryant had concerns coming out of college and he’s done pretty good so far

  32. Rrsrq Says:

I have never been a fan of FSU, I am a Bucs fan, nobody truly knows if a player will be a bust or not, but when I look at the stats of Andrew Luck and Jameis Winston, they are very comparable. I would take my chances on the kid, he has the ability as long as he has the availability.

  33. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Congratulations, maybe all is well in the world and it was all my imagination.

  34. Skyline Crew Says:

Here you go 87′. It is scheduled for the Week of Nov. 17. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/1182824/florida-state-officials-inform-jameis-winston-student-conduct-code-hearing-week-november-17

  35. Lunchbag AL Says:

Didn’t cam Newton have a suspect maturity issue coming out of Florida and then Auburn?

  36. Mr. Patrick Says:

FSU brought in Bo Jackson, Charlie Ward and Herschel Walker to mentor Jameis and each said he was hopeless and there was nothing they could do

  37. Jonny 2.3 Says:

@Mr. Patrick: And our very own Derrick Brooks said Jameis listens to him and follows what he preaches, post-FHRITPgate.

  38. Buckin' Round Says:

    Do not want.

  39. Buc1987ForJameis Says:

Skyline Crew …Oh I thought you meant an actual hearing…like in a court of law.

That thing is going to be a complete dog and pony show. Nothing’s going to come of it. Write that down who told you that first.

  40. Todd Says:

come on bucs and mccown tank for winston

  41. UCF BCS Says:

The next Jamarcus Russel, buy wayyyyyyyy dumber. This dumb shite will weigh 476lbs and doing a bid upstate in 4-5 years.

  42. Chris Says:

Taking Mariota over Winston would be a huge mistake. Who in the hell thinks that Mariota is better than Winston? Jameis is smarter, makes better on the field decisions and will be completely fine off the field when he gets out of college. He is a college kid, which of you who went to college didn’t do the same sh*t or worse?

  43. JBuc Says:

Mr. Patrick, please get your facts straight and maybe do some reading about Jameis and FSU. They DID NOT bring in Bo Jackson and Hershal Walker to work with Jameis. Bo said he tried to offer advice to him on his own since they are both from Bessemer, Alabama. He did not say what the advice was but said he felt that it wasn’t taken. Funny thing is Bo is an Auburn alum and apparently never had talked to Jameis before though they are from the same very small town.

Hershal was critical of Jameis as a Heisman winner and a vote holder for future Heisman trophy awards. He was not brought in by FSU.

Charlie Ward has and continues to work with Jameis. He has expressed some frustration with his lack of maturity but says he is a very smart and likable kid that is making progress. They are said to have a good relationship.

However, I know your comments fit the narrative that he’s a stupid ass so let’s just make things up.

  44. phil Says:

We should do everything we can to get Jameis Winston. If we are able to do that he will become the best quarterback we have ever had. This kid will be way better than Cam Newton. And with Mike Evans, ASJ, & VJ to throw to we would light up the scoreboard like never before in franchise history.

  45. Chef Paul Says:

WOW what a bunch a racist pig bigots.

Racism will NEVER die as long as people like newbucsfan and loggedontosay are spouting their nonsense.

  46. Skyline Crew Says:

    Mariota>Winston>Prescott

  47. Buctebow Says:

Whatever QB they pick could bust, that is just the way it is, it could be the franchise, it could fail, or could end up to be a journeyman game manager. My concern is whether they actually will draft a QB in the first round. I do not have any faith that they will.

  48. Loggedontosay Says:

    Chef Paul,

I hate to respond to you on this site about this issue, but I am; then I will be done with this issue period on Joe’s site. The man deserves better. However, he does have a lot of racist responding on his site. Racism will never stop as long as you are a racist. If you stop being a racist and the million like you, racism will end. I understand that you do not understand all of the salient that defines racism, but I careless if racism does or does not end.

  49. Chef Paul Says:

Whatever you want to say. I make it a point not to argue with racist bigots. So have a nice day.
