Lovie: “Mike Has Played Two Great Games”

October 6th, 2014

mike glennon 0929bLovie Smith still won’t name Mike Glennon his No. 1 quarterback, and he’s not a big fan of the question.

Lovie was hit with the Glennon-McCown depth chart query this afternoon at One Buc Palace.

“You know, I don’t know why we have to go there, you know, right now,” Lovie said. “This is what I’ll say about Mike has played two great games. And my odds are Mike will start for us this week. And then, again, he’s hard two opportunities to play, and he’s played well.

“I love. I could talk about Mike the rest of the time. Been just excited about everything he’s done. But we go from day to day. Right now we need to get our football team better. The quarterback position isn’t one that I’m really concerned about.”

Lovie later gave a short answer when asked about the problems with the offense: “running the football.”

  1. LUE0615 Says:

Glennon is actually playing pretty good for a 2nd year man not elite but above average. our Defense has to start playing better that is one thing i’m certain of.

  2. DallasBuc Says:

Of all the awful off season decisions by do-no-wrong Lovie and his lapdog GM throwing $5mil at Josh effing McCown and naming his sorry ass a starter back in March has to be the worst!

  3. Rob Says:

Running the football, and defense – the two things Lovie wants to do more than anything else are the two things this team is terrible at.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

    “We’re on to Baltimore…”

    “We’re on to Baltimore…”

    “We’re on to Baltimore…”

    Any more questions?

    “We’re on to Baltimore…”

  5. gulfcoast Says:

Can we not read between the lines? He does NOT want DCs running to the Glennon game film when they could be running to the Glennon films AND the McClown film as well. Its a coaching tactic. Successful, unnecessary? Who knows but Lovie knows who the starter is – you and I do to.

  6. NewTampaChris Says:

Yes, on the lengthy list of Bucs’ problems, Glennon’s play is not near the top.

  7. BucFanInArkansas Says:

@Rob: you just nailed it, sir.

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Pinning down Lovie on the starter QB question aint gonna happen. We have two starting QB’s, they are interchangeable according to their performance on the field in live games.

  9. 1Gr8Buc Says:

The Big Douche just stated Glennon is going to be his new Dilfer. Anyone remember what kind of a hard on he had for Dilfer? Sometime I think he is just a character because no way someone can be that…….. ignorant? I’ve lost adjectives to think of to describe that guy.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

Glennon is the reason that we’re even in the games to begin with, not Lovie’s D.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

@1Gr8Buc …ha ha ha ha great post.

  12. stevek Says:

TheBigDawggie needs to recongnize that Glennon is the real deal. He can proclaim him “Opey”, or “not as good as Freeman”, or even “Dilfer-like”…. That is ok, some people are color blind. BDawggie is just flat out talent blind, specifically at the QB position.

    Great post 1Gr8Buc!

  13. 1Gr8Buc Says:

@Buc1987 I just sit here scratching my head and laughing listening to this guy for the past couple years. I have tried to figure him out but I just can’t. Most of his callers who call in and agree with everything he says usually sound like drunk retirees.

@Joe I have gained a whole new level of respect for you, for sitting in a room with that guy for any period of time.

  14. lightningbuc Says:

    1gr8buc,

It’s all a schtick. I have no idea why you guys subject yourself to him. I don’t even listen when Joe is on – not going to support the Lil Pup in any fashion.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

If I see Lovie put McClown back in as starter I will be convinced that he is trying to railroad this franchise.

  16. bucrightoff Says:

The McCown Game Film= Avoid watching his 5 game run at starter as Bears last year, assume preparation for career backup. Seems simple enough

  17. 1Gr8Buc Says:

@lightningbuc I look at it more as a comedy routine than anything else. I can only take about 15 minutes than I’m done.

  18. RastaMon Says:

There is intelligent sports CONVERSATION…on FM

  19. 1Gr8Buc Says:

@RastaMon, I can handle Booger but last time I listened the guy that was on there with him had the most ANNOYING voice. Almost like a poor mans Seinfeld.

  20. buccanAy Says:

I’ve got real concerns Lovie is to stubborn to do what’s best for this team, rather it be naming Glennon the starter, though he was quick to name McCown without competition, or changing this run first conservative offense, or running LESS cover-2. Just don’t know if he’s willing to make changes, if his way is not working.

He’s certainly not on the “cutting edge” of today’s NFL.

  21. Hawk Says:

    @ lightningbuc +1

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

This team still hasn’t figured out how to win. The best team did not win on Sunday. No I do not blame the refs or any bad luck, I blame the superior team which found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

These guys are playing better. They are not yet winners. A winner would have clearly figured out a way to get the W yesterday. Obviously they can’t start with the “stupid”! The penalties. They can tighten up defensively in their coverages.
They may yet be a good team by the end of the season, depending on health.

I was not a huge Mason Foster guy but perhaps I’ve underestimated his influence. Fletcher is not getting it done physically. Get Goldson and Foster health…Sims…o line continues to gel. It’s not really a stretch to have hope for this team. Nobody’s talking playoffs…just a competitive entertaining team during the latter half of the season. We’ll be spoilers.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

1Gr8Buc…I get in trouble on JBF if I talk about that guy, so let’s just leave it at that. I always have to laugh when I see people saying worse than me about him.

But oh well the past is the past and I can choose who I want to listen to so I won’t get annoyed anymore.

  24. Mumbles Says:

Stop bashing Lovie. He is the reason Glennon is still here. He had offers to trade him and refused. Called him the QB of the future. The future is now!

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 87

By all means….stay of trouble with Joe….we don’t want to miss you again!!!

As for naming Glennon starter…..Lovie loves secrets……remember Schiano naming Freeman starter on Monday…..then benching him and trying to trade him on Tuesday?….not going to happen with Lovie.

All those calling for Lovie’s head are misguided…..there is no way the Glazers are going to pay for three coaches at one time. He is here to stay at least 3 years….I suspect he will eventually be successful.

Keep in mind that we don’t have Tedford…..and I suspect our running game will improve when the coaches learn that the worst time for us to run is 1st & 10.

  26. BucIt941 Says:

Let Mike “Golden Arm” Glennon keep it flying!

Right now he is the least of our worries or change needed moving forward!

  27. Ike Turner Says:

man I love me some MG. I’f I wuz white I wanna be like mike.

my boyz a st8 up pimp. I bet he got game with the backhand 2!

  28. BucIt941 Says:

Hey Dilfer has a ring….So it wasn’t like he was horribly wrong on him …..

Hahaha I couldn’t even say that with a straight face.

  29. Ike Turner Says:

you know lovie aint kippin it real. he aint OG, he aint a playa.

he’s a str8 up lame as, jive talkin, no game wanna be

  30. billy buckaroo Says:

Lets see Glennon start calling some audibles at the line and make the defense re-adjust to him.
    He’s ready!

  31. RastaMon Says:

How many “Great Games” did McCown play L&L ?

  32. Nybucsfan Says:

The whole team needs to get better. I’m am not on the Glennon train but I can see that he isn’t the only problem. But the saints had the ball for 11 mins more than us and we had what three turnovers sounds like Glennon and the O didn’t help them. The saints have one int and safety on the year who did they get them from.

  33. rayjay1122 Says:

Glennon has not been the reason we are 1-1 since he became the interim starter but he is the reason we are not 0-2. Our best case scenario for the teams future is for Glennon to continue to improve and if some of the men being paid good money to catch the ball started doing their jobs, Glennon would have had over 300 yards passing and maybe one more TD. Yes the Steelers and Saints are not world beaters on defense but is Atlanta? I strongly concur with starting Glennon the reminder of the season and lets see if he can continue to mature and take over this team. We have so many needs to address next offseason and if we can get away with not using our 1st round pick on a QB that face it will take at least a year to learn and become the starter when we have so many other needs. The sad part is that before the season it was a foregone conclusion that our Defense would be just fine. How many of us were wrong about that? Me included! 🙁 Poor LVD. He is a man amongst boys other than GMC. Maybe next season we will be drafting all defense?

  34. Nybucsfan Says:

I don’t wanna start josh again that’s for sure but people make Glennon sound great he has been average at best playing teams with bad D he has a losing record as a starter. If that’s what you want in a QB fine but I would like a QB that wins and makes plays to win the game not take a safety. In pop warner you learn to throw the ball away not to take a safety

  35. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

    Draft needs

    1.FS (Goldson is getting released)
2.DE (We need more pass rushers)
    3.MLB (Fletcher sucks!)

  36. rayjay1122 Says:

I still can’t figure out why the Bucs did not go after Brees when he left the Chargers. That has come back to bite us in the ass a few times. As well as Sproles. IMO

  37. Barry Says:

The local sports talk is really bad IMO. I mean the guy on at 3 week days on 620 is supposed to be King.Think about that, it’s bad.

  38. Flmike Says:

McClown has a big pink cast on his hand, he’s not starting another game, unless by some miracle his thumb ligaments magically reattach themselves and allow him to grip the ball….

  39. BoJim Says:

    Nybucsfan Said:

“I don’t wanna start josh again that’s for sure but people make Glennon sound great he has been average at best playing teams with bad D he has a losing record as a starter. If that’s what you want”
    ________________________________________________________

So you’re blaming Glennon? Offense=11. Defense=11. Glennon=1. So how you figure? Give him a running game? How bout the D stopping a few plays? Hmmm., Kinda like last year.

  40. Bucnjim Says:

For two years in a row Glennon has been handed the keys to a car that has already been totaled. Teams that start 0-3 have about a 5% chance of making the playoffs. (might as well be zero) Big money players are already in the mind set of oh well better not get hurt and ruin my pay day. Young players that are from winning programs have no idea on how to pull out of the funk and everyone else on the team is just going through the motions. If you don’t see players on the Bucs who are just going through the motions then you aren’t paying attention. Glennon, McCoy & LVD are playing their hearts out though and it’s at least fun watching the intensity these guys bring.

  41. bucrightoff Says:

Nybucsfan you also learn in Pop Warner that throwing the ball away in the end zone under pressure results in a safety anyways, so thanks for playing “I Hate Mike Glennon, can we please bring back Freeman”.

  42. "TheKevin" Says:

Yeah afternoon radio on am station is horrid. I can’t believe he has a job. I can take literally about 5 minutes.

He’s just an angry old man and it’s obvious to everyone except every other old man. Just think he knows everything and if you disagree your an idiot.

    Seems very narcissistic to me.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    bucrightoff ..LMAO…Classic!

  44. Buc1987 Says:

Kevin it has to be an act….to rile the fans. Extremely fake.

  45. Nybucsfan Says:

You could roll out than throw it way I think we all know that they would be after him in that situation. All I’m saying in a QB driven League he is what 5-11 as a starter with one come back win. As a I die hard fan that doesn’t excite me.

  46. SteveK Says:

Glennon is a boss in the making.

  47. SteveK Says:

    Nybucsfan,

Glennon is only getting better. Patience, and you will have your franchise QB.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

I’m throwing OUT everything Glennon did last year. Why? Because it was his rookie season. I don’t call the shots on this team, and all I can do is root for my teams QB. I suggest some of the rest of you do the same.

YOU don’t call the shots. Lovie does. If Lovie says he’s our QB then he has 100% support from me. Unlike some of you I support my starting QB. Some of you root against him, because you (the average fan)knows more than Lovie does about football. Blah blah blah you don’t know jack shyte about football compared to Lovie. That goes for Schiano as well.

I’m not singling anyone out either, but I don’t know what the kid has to do for you people to be impressed. Escaping the rush and running to his left he throws a great pass to Vincent Jackson for a first down on 2nd and 20.

This team makes a lot of mistakes, especially on offense. Glennon’s NOT one of them. If anything the offense makes it harder on Glennon with all the damned penalties and mistakes. Wake up people. That loss was NOT on Glennon at all.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

Was it Glennon’s fault that he was in the position to have to take a safety? Or was it the center’s fault that snapped the ball away from Glennon? I say it was the centers fault. We should have NEVER even been in the back of our end zone in the first place.

Just blame Mike. It’s easier that way. Whatever.

  50. SteveK Says:

Glennon is winning over the Bucs’ brass, his teammates and the fans. I am pleased to watch MG8 develop into our franchise QB.

  51. BucFan20 Says:

It was a toss up anyway. Handoff to Martin odds were he got caught for the safety anyway. He damn near did before. Glennon did not give up an 11 point lead.

  52. BucFan20 Says:

Glennon is also not our punter.

  53. Destinjohnny Says:

On the road in Nola and at Pitt is no easy task. – don’t forget 1st and 2nd game in new offense with a guy that had never called a game. You have to take thT into account. Also o line is not even average. Well done mike

  54. Zam Says:

Oh to have had the Josh McCown money spent on some other quality players and drafted a QB to backup / replace Mike Glennon some day.

I don’t think 90% of the fans in Tampa Bay would have signed McCown. Shouldn’t the coach be smarter than the general public?

  55. Phillip Says:

We were in the games against the Panthers and Rams also so whoever is saying Glennon is the reason for being in the games didn’t notice or has blinders on as to why we were in the games all season(aside from the ATL game)…

Has the defense been a disaster? Yes

Is it still a team game? Yes

Not one single player can win a FOOTBALL game by themself so quit giving Glennon all the credit(and NONE of the Blame)… If the line was still crap he wouldn’t have time to throw the ball.. If the receivers don’t catch the ball then guess what they would be incompletions…

Yes be excited Glennon has played good/decent against 3 crap defenses much better than McCown has done.. I hope the kid continues to start the rest of the season(as I’ve stated since week 1 of the season) as I want to see him against the Bengals D then the next week against the Lions D

Tap the brakes MGM.. Just a little 🙂

  56. frog Says:

Lovey doesn’t like the question because it exposes his stubborn ass. That’s right Lovey, keep listening too and swallowing Duemigs advise, He’s a real expert.
