Not “A Whole Lot Open”

December 16th, 2013

Xs and Os guru Dave Moore, the former Bucs tight end and current Buccaneers Radio Network game analyst, weighed in on all things Bucs-Niners this morning on WDAE-AM 620.

Moore talked a lot about the Bucs bad tackling and about how he could see Mike Glennon going through his progressions and not seeing “a whole lot open.”

Well, that’s what happens when your No. 3 receiver got cut for ineptitude, and your No. 2 receiver had hamstring surgery. There’s plenty more in the interview below. Moore also explains how the legitimate-threat status of Tim Wright should help the passing game in various ways for years to come.

I think that Wright developing in to a legitimate threat is a bit more against Sullivan. With Wright being one of the few weapons that we have one offense then it doesn’t do us any good to have an offensive system that doesn’t use the TE often

  2. DHutch Says:

Or he could just fine ways to use him. All systems can adjust to talent.

  3. mark2001 Says:

Patrick…you can always use a good TE.

Like I said earlier…these are critical times for Glennon’s development, and the coaches have to be careful….we just don’t have the receiving weapons for him. Draft at least two receivers…who can plug and play relatively rapidly, including a top notch speed guy, and then we will know what Glennon really has. Thanks for the article, Joe.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to pick up a top WR…either through FA or the Draft…..Sammy Watkins may still be there when we pick. Also, another TE…..I’d rather see us with two TEs than with a FB. We are carrying 4 FBs and yesterday we didn’t complete one single pass to a FB…..no runs…..what a waste!!!

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

we’ve already seen how well that adjusting thing works

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This is getting ridiculous. So are you telling me Underwood wasn’t wide open on third down on the first drive. You know, the one where he forced it in to Leonard who was covered with a safety about to light him up. Underwood was ridiculously open, only about 5 yards away from Leonard. So Vincent Jackson wasn’t open on 3rd and short in the third quarter? There was no defender within 5 yards of him, yet he holds onto the ball too long and gets his pass batted down.

Look, Glennon is short weapons. We all know that. He doesn’t have the benefit of good playcalling. That’s pretty obvious. But it’s absolutely insane to ignore the fact that Glennon is routinely missing guys that are wide open. Chalk it up to him being a rookie, that’s fine, but please don’t exclude him from the blame.

  7. bigpoppabuc Says:

Defenses have adjusted to Glennon and either he, or the coaching, or both aren’t adjusting back. Glennon needs to see when he’s being baited into the check down. I’m going to put it in the “rookie mistakes” category and see how he plays against the rams.
sad that he showed much more poise and accuracy three weeks ago, only to regress to true rookie form. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have what it takes, he’s just running out if time to make his case for starter next season.

  8. mvermulm Says:

Hawaiian, the receivers aren’t consistently open enough either though. Glennon is a rookie, so he’s going to hold onto the ball too long sometimes, and miss open guys occasionally. However, the receivers could help him by getting open on downs not named third when the pass rush is coming quicker too.

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @mvermulm,

That’s fine, and I can accept that. I just don’t like the fact that some people (not you) are making as if he’s carrying the team, but it’s all everyone else’s fault. He has a share in the blame. I personally don’t see an excess of talent from Glennon. I believe he’s a very smart, hard worker, but not overflowing with talent. That’s my opinion, and I sincerely hope I’m wrong.

  10. SKelly Says:

I have said before and I’ll say it again. Name me on team that has less weapons on offense than we do. I’ll wait. Glennon is playing ok. If you go back and watch the game though he was balling out when we were in the no huddle and thats all him. Kid can play, jury is still out though whether we can do better and we have as little talent as any team in the league on offense. Summary of the BUCS 2013 offense…..

  11. Patrickbucs Says:

    @mark2001

Look at all of the high picks besides Allen for the Chargers at wr, it’s rare for them to do well their 1st year unless they are can’t miss like an AJ Green. We do need a lot more fast options either way though.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Jacksonville, Buffalo, St. Louis, Atlanta (this year), Washington, and Tennessee all have less weapons, or at least as little weapons as us. And if I remember correctly, Freeman had his moments in no huddle. Don’t get confused between having moments versus “balling”.

  13. Bobby Says:

Listen, how did Drew Brees do with no rushing game yesterday against a good defense? If a HOF QB can’t carry a team without a balanced attack against a good defense, why should we expect Mike Glennon to? The amazing thing is we held the game to a six point difference into the 4th quarter. Everything went the 49’rs way yesterday. The throw to Vernon Davis that was an absolute perfect pass, the conversion on 3rd and 12 to extend the drive that made it a 9 pt deficit…they are just a better team right now. Not a lot better but better in the sense they have more weapons and execute better.

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Now we are comparing him to Drew Freaking Brees. Brees has had tins of games he’s played phenomenal with no running game. I’m out of this conversation. This is just stupid.

  15. skelly Says:

Hawaiian – 2 long td drives, with 90% competition in like 4 minutes is balling. For the possessions, he looked great. stop whining and saying he didn’t. As far as other offenses,

Jacksonville, ST Louis and Buffalo (maybe), are as understaffed currently as we are.

Atlanta, Washington and Tennessee?????? Sorry, your on crack…Maybe when we get Mike Williams and Doug Martin back we are as good as those offenses. ATL and TEN have talent all over the place. Washington went to playoffs last year.

  16. tha truth is ... Says:

Glennon is in between a rock and a razor blade. Lack of starters, speed and scheme isn’t helping much. Not 2 mention that tha players with speed ( Underwood & Owusu) are wet behind tha ears or simply aren’t consistent enough 2 cut it. Teams blitz all game and squat on routes because tha lack of speed puts no fear in anybody hearts 2 get beat deep or get much YAC from short throw and runs. Far as im concerned ill be fine with drafting Watkins, letting Wright continue 2 develop and spend a late round draft pick with burners

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

So if you look good for 2 possessions you are balling, even if you total 11 yards on the rest of the possessions? Uh, ok buddy, whatever you say. Josh Freeman was balling too I guess by those standards. All it takes is 14 points and you are balling now. Good to know.

You apparently can’t read well. I said Atlanta this year. Regardless, it doesn’t matter. You are madly in love with Glennon, and you believe he’s the answer. That’s fine, I hope I end up being the idiot. At some point, he’s not going to have any more excuses and he’s going to have to perform. I went through this for 4 years with Freeman, I’m done with excuses.

  18. SKelly Says:

Must be nice to talk to yourself Hawaiian. read my post. Glennon can play at this level, it is unknown yet whether he is the answer (since when did 10 games become enough time to evaluate a dude), and we are severly below avg. in the talent department at skill positions.

BTW – I read it exactly as you meant it the first time, I just disagree. ATL is playing like crap but they are only missing 1 WR. The rest of their offense is intact. White, Gonzalez, Steven Jackson, Douglas is a more talented group than ours. They are not winning. But the conversation was talent.

Im as mad at our organization as you are bro. Just trying to stay grounded. If Cam Netwon, Luck, RGIII, etc etc etc were available for us this year, I would pull the trigger in a second. But I don’t think a player of that quality will be there. AND YES….We can play semantics all day long around Glennon’s play. Its not good enough but he does FLASH talent. And usually, in the NFL, a Rookie QB who flashes but is inconsistent means he gets another year of development.
