Bucs Seize Third Place, Change Draft Position

November 24th, 2013

The Atlanta Falcons are now in the Bucs’ rearview mirror in the NFC South. Tampa Bay is 3-8 and rising; Atlanta is 2-9 and sinking.

The Redskins also have three wins but play this week on Monday night at home against San Francisco (6-4.)

Regardless of what happens in that game, the Bucs will be sitting with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 draft, if the season ended this week. The Jags, Texans, Vikings and Falcons all have two wins.

Of course, the Bucs’ season has five games to go. Is Tampa Bay officially eliminated from the 2013 playoffs yet? Perhaps that’s a better question.

Admittedly, I’ve been guilty of hoping for draft position vs a win. But beating teams like Atlanta and the Cryin’ Lions is kinda worth it.

  2. WalkdaPlank Says:

    PLAYOFFS?!

  3. stanglassman Says:

It’s alright ATL won’t pick a QB and we better.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

I would love to have a high pick in the draft. What fan doesnt want that? But I would much rather see my team win and continue to win.

  5. Jerry Says:

The way Glennon is playing….Schiano will return, and we won’t be picking a QB with that #1 pick.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This winning thing is kinda fun…..screw the draft pick…lets beat the “stinking” Panthers…and knock them off stride…
Just think…if we drop down far enough, we may pick Watkins or Matthews…..not too bad….you can forget QB in round 1….there will be so many QBs chosen in this draft it will open up many in FA……or cheap trades…

  7. Gus Says:

    first to worse for atlanta.

  8. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“It’s alright ATL won’t pick a QB and we better.”

Which means we have less than a 50% chance of finding a starting Q.B.

Again go back to the Glennon post and see the list of 1st round draft picks at Q.B. it’s not really a pretty sight.

If you go from 2011 back five years there are very few who have played even as well as Glennon.

Football is still a team sport. I concede Q.B. is the most important position but again it’s defense that wins championships. I’d just as soon trade down and get some multiple choices and hope we can find another Levonte David in the 2nd or 3rd round.

We need a possession receiver. A Wesley Walker, Jordy Nelson type. I love Vjax but he’s not a possession receiver with his shaky hands…ditto for Mike Williams. A great tight end could fill that position although I have been impressed with the recent development of Wright.

I want defense and more defense. If you guys need to break the bank forget about shooting for a Q.B. and hope we can somehow get Clowney. I’d love to see Clowney next to Gmac.

    More depth at linebacker..defensive back.

This team is actually getting pretty good. We just need more depth.

  9. buc4lyfe Says:

would rather see my team be competitive on gameday than competing for a top pick in the draft. no one thought we were a playoff team in the offseason but no one believed we would be in the running for a top 5 pick in the draft….lavonte david, doug martin, mike glennon, mike williams, mike james, jonathan banks, erik lorig, akeem spence, mason foster are all playing big boy ball for us and their not 1st round picks, danny gorrer is so much better than leonard johson who is too small to play outside and to slow to play slot.

If you think you have a playoff ready team and schiano is our guy, I would love to see bucs be bold and go the julio jones route for an impact defensive end since we draft better in later rounds than in the first…

  10. Ed Says:

Glennon is playing well. Having another QB would help but it’s not as much of a position of need as-

    Offensive tackle

    Defensive End

    Cornerbacks

    Tight Ends

    Receivers

  11. Pyrda Says:

Is it even possible for tampa to make it to the playoffs?

  12. WalkdaPlank Says:

Well the Bucs have 5 games left. 2 against losing teams, 3 against winning teams. Seeing as how only 6 teams per conference make the playoffs each year, and it is impossible for the Bucs to pull a 2010 Seattle move since the Saints have 9 wins and the Bucs can only get 8 at the max, the playoffs are all but a pipe dream. 12 teams in the NFC have more wins than the Bucs (3), and 3 of those teams have 8+ wins. That really only leaves the Bucs with 3 spots to aim for. 5 teams have 6 wins, with Arizona about to get it’s 7th win and San Fran plays a poor Washington team tomorrow. There are 5 games left to the season.

So not only would the Bucs have to win every game they have left, they would have to hope that San Fran doesn’t get 1 more win (unless the Bucs beat San Fran and own the tiebreaker at 8 wins), hope Chicago doesn’t get two or more wins, and hope that Philly and Arizona get less than two wins because they own tiebreakers over the Bucs. If Detroit finishes 8-8 then Tampa Bay owns the tiebreaker over them, but if they win 3 more games it won’t matter. So if any of those 5 teams get 3 wins with only 5 games left, that takes a spot away from the Bucs and the Bucs only have a shot at 3 spots since there are 3 teams with 8+ wins and 8 win Carolina would probably get the division tiebreaker over the Bucs. Then of course there are the 4 teams that have 4 or 5 wins that are ahead of the Bucs in the standings.

So TECHNICALLY, the Bucs are not out of it yet Joe, and our chances went from none to slim these past 3 weeks. IMO though, it’s all about job security at this point. Job security for Schiano and his college of coaches, and job security for Mike Glennon being the starting QB of 2014.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

On second thought…maybe it would be wise to draft Johnny M…..after all, almost all of the hits on him could be to his helmet……How about trying to hit Glennon’s helmet…not so easy…. just kidding!

  14. WalkdaPlank Says:

Scratch that, the Bucs only have a shot at 2 of the 6 playoff spots. 4 spots go to the division leaders, and we already know it’s literally impossible for the Bucs to win the NFC South, and 2 spots are for Wild Card teams.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @TBBF – I see what you did there 😉

  16. mark2001 Says:

TBBF…you just made Doug Flutie mad.

  17. Captain Stagger Says:

Clowney/Barr in the first, Amaro/Eborn/Jenkins in the second.

If you think Wright looks good now, pair him up with an elite TE and we will have our own Gronk/Hernandez….

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Imagine if Flutie were playing today….can’t hit him low….can’t hit him high…….15 yds and a 1st down..

I’m waiting for he NFL to add Roughing The Passer penalties to the QB Rating….& stats.

  19. Evan Says:

Sadly it looks like we just lost out on Clowney unless some crazy sort of events happen (I.e lose the next 5/ teams ahead of us win out/ clowney character issues scares teams away from making him a top 4 pick/ teams ahead have too much of a pressing need at QB or T over DE). I’d love to land a franchise QB but I’d also love to settle for Clowney. Whatever, as long as ATL doesn’t land him. Though they really need a T. Anything is possible from now until May.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We don’t hold the 3rd pick position. We have 4 teams going before us at present. Jags, Texans, Falcons and Vikings at this moment.

So that gives us the 5th pick, not the 3rd.

  21. SKelly Says:

If we don’t need a QB, which it looks like we don’t in the first at least, then there will be plenty of sick players (DE, OL) available for us in the top 5 or 6. Honestly though, hopefully we win out and end up in the middle of the draft. That will bode better for next year than a pick will.

  22. gotbbucs Says:

3rd in the nfc south bonzai, not 3rd pick in the draft.

  23. Espo Says:

    Playoffs? You’re talkin about playoffs?

  24. gotbbucs Says:

At pick #5 I’m taking Mike Evans. Evans and Vincent Jackson are identical size, what a matchup nightmare for opposing secondaries.

  25. Mikeck Says:

Heck, what makes anyone think that Manziel, Bridgewater or the Oregon guy will be better than glennon? I mean, the guy is completing 66% of his passes for about 230 a game and has like 13 tds for 4 int’s. If there was an Andrew Luck in the draft, I would say do it, but as we have seen, the read-option QB isn’t all we thought it was after last season. You need a guy who can throw.

We have a guy who now tall, has nice arm strength, is accurate, doesn’t seem to get flustered, is intelligent and doesn’t seem to have any personality issues. Not sure how much better we do in the draft

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Get Glennon an O-lineman in the draft. Then go get him some weapons damn it. It’s all about #8 from now on. Mike Glennon with weapons equals “winnin with Glennon”. Build him a line and bring him a good TE it doesn’t have to be a great one either, and a 3rd wr. Then get a FA veteran backup QB and kick Danny O to the curb.

Draft Oline and DL, pick up another FA DB (if available) to compliment Revis and bring the other DB’s back as backups. Johnson and Banks can play backup roles next season.

I don’t call shots but that’s what I’d do. If they even come close to doing stuff like that in the offseason. I’ll be happy. 3-8 keep winning, show that you can come back from adversity. This team is full of young scrappers and I like it. They will not quit on the season or their coach.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

What Mikeck said too. Well said sir.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Glennon, Glennon, Glennon. Glennon almost out-dueled Russell Wilson. Then out-dueled Tannehill, Matt Ryan, and Stafford.

C’mon man….what’s a guy gotta do for your team?

It’s all about number 8 now.

Does he have to out-duel Cam next week?

Will that do it for you fans?

There is no one in this draft that is coming out that is going to be better in the short term than Glennon. There are no slam dunk QB’s coming out. No Lucks, No Winston’s.

Start the dispute then. What QB that’s coming out, is going to be better than what number 8 is doing right now and why?

  29. sho-nuff Says:

no problem…IMO our QB is Glennan…next

  30. ed Says:

Check the record of this team after the last five games that will determine if the buc’s need to draft a quarterback, which i think they need.

  31. Capt. Tim Says:

Winning is better than high draft picks. And Glennon has earned the Starting QB job.

A TE, some OLine help, this team could make moves next season- if it continues to progress the way it has the last 4 games.

  32. Tnew Says:

I don’t understand the residual Freeman love/Glennon hate. Kid seems to really want this opportunity and is more than willing to work to make sure he sticks. If we pretend he was drafted in the first round can we give him a chance? Russell Wilson was drafted in the third and is doing pretty good. Btw….he transferred from n.c. State because of….

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Yes ed and they can get one in FA..a nice back up veteran QB to back up Mikey in 2014. Go O-line please and get Mike some weapons too. He’s working with junk right. Williams comes back healthy next season and pick up a few more weapons for Mikey before then.

Maybe get a new DC or OC or both. Schiano just has to keep winning. I say 6-10 and he stays.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Tnew…I’m already sold on Glennon obviously. So it’s geek boy for me. I vote for Pedro and Napolean.

  35. Jordan Says:

Why draft a “potential Andrew Luck”, when Glennon is playing better than Luck. The numbers don’t lie. Glennon’s numbers are not only better than Luck’s successful rookie season, they are better than Luck’s current season.

  36. BamBamBuc Says:

I wouldn’t go that far. Luck was 5-3 after his first 8 games, led his team to the playoffs and had less talent. Rookies Ballard @ RB and Fleener @ TE. Donnie Avery as a #2 WR. 4 4th quarter comebacks and 7 game winning drives that season. Be careful about crowning this guy based on high comp% and TD/INT ratio. That doesn’t always equate to wins and that is what this is all about.

  37. Buc1987 Says:

BamBam….your really reaching now, to try and pull something negative out of this rookie’s performance and that’s just silliness. Wins and losses in the middle of this sh*tstorm of a season. It is a team game right. It’s not Glennon’s win/loss record…it’s the teams win/loss record. Such silliness man. I’m not saying he’s better than Luck, but to knock his high completion % and td/int ratio as if he sucks or will never be any good. Or it’s nothing to base how good he really is, is pathetic.

  38. BamBamBuc Says:

Oh, but it is Glennon’s win/loss record. The QB bears that burden… Or so it’s been said the past year or so around here. If we should compare, Luck, Wilson, RGIII, Kaepernick, even Tannehill did not lose their first 5 games started. I don’t think any of them even had a 5 game losing streak at any point.

I gave the kid, Glennon, his props for a decent game today and progression rather than regression. I’m just opposed to crowning him anything more than adequate QB at this point. He’s won 3 games, 2 w/ great rushing efforts, all 3 with solid defensive efforts.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    BamBam…okay then. Stay tuned.

  40. Patrick in VA Says:

I’ve changed my position on this issue. I wanted to lose out, dump the coach and get a great draft spot. What I’ve seen the last few weeks has changed my mind about how our coaches coach and our talent level. Somehow schiano figured out how to coach all of a sudden. We’re not embarrassing to watch anymore. That’s bit to say that there doesn’t need to be changes to the staff. Sheridan is a boob. Sullivan is questionable. That said, i’m fine with sliding down the draft slots if it means this team its learning how to play together and win. If we head in to next year on a roll and maintain most of our roster and supplement with solid draft choices, wherever we end up on the board, and stock the shelves with quality veteran depth in FA I think we’ll be pretty stout next year

  41. bucthis Says:

Hey Evan, sorry man, like a said a while ago, Clowney WILL be in an Atlanta uniform – so I’ll say again, Buc’s need to draft Mattews with their pick because Penn won’t be able to handle HIM!!!

  42. []_[]Buc Says:

    BamBam shhhh

Your the guy that has spent “years” making excuses for Free Free as to why he was our guy.

    Bitter isn’t better buddy 😉

  43. BucNasty!!! Says:

Bam bam dont worry buddy i hear u loud an clear im just letting the mob have there moment. Like I said he isnt the worst but he’s not the next commin of manning or brady but everyone loves to compare brcause he won 3 games I can elaborate but y the mob will do jothin but refute it but bam bam said it all perfectly so dont hop on ky meet screammin free or anything else like that stay humble say blennon doing good but he needs to show more as far as im concerned he still hasnt earned the starting job he’s earned a chance to show more beciase he’s shown broght spots hut he still needs work 1 on point deep ball to underwood dont excuse the last 6 bad deep 1’s to v jax

  44. Chris Says:

Get Matthews. She’d Penns salary. Sign Greg Hardy from the panthers. Get Austin S. Jenkins in round 2. BOOM

  45. stevek Says:

    Bambam,

Thanks for your honesty, and we did hear a lot of excuses for JF5.

Good to see Glennon developing into a stud NFL QB.

  46. Amarti190711 Says:
