Did Jason Licht Punt On A Vita Vea Trade?

October 29th, 2026

Buccaneers GM Jason Licht.

The NFL landscape is rumbling this morning after a trade was announced between the Titans and Bears.

Chicago will land stud 29-year-old defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and a 2028 fifth-round pick from Tennessee. The Titans get two first-round picks in return (2027 and 2028) plus a Bears fourth-round pick in 2027.

That’s a huge ransom given up by the all-in Bears. And it makes Joe wonder if Chicago had called Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht asking about stud Bucs defensive tackle Vita Vea.

Simmons earns about $35 million per year. He had a career high 11 sacks last year and is on pace for another strong year. Vea, 31, was gifted a 2026 raise and a $30 million salary for 2027 by the Bucs after asking to be traded this summer. His contract was due to expire after this season.

Given the Bucs’ 2-5 record and Vea’s historic talent and postseason experience (he’s also considered an iconic leader at One Buc Palace), Joe thinks it’s very reasonable to think Chicago was interested in taking Vea off the Bucs’ hands. Perhaps for a second-round pick? Or maybe a third- and a fourth-rounder?

Joe would not have moaned if the Bucs dealt Vea for a reasonable draft haul.

Shedding that salary after a 2-5 start would be logical.

Jason knows what he’s doing. Trading anyone at this point in the season is counter to everything about this team’s culture. There are so many more things than scoreboard and standings that matter.

  2. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

We will now have to deal with Simmons. Let’s hope our Oline is up to the task. Will be much harder to run on the Bears now.

Oh but first – let’s handle the Falcons.

  3. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

McBay with more sarcasm. It would be awesome if it were funnier. You can do it.

  4. 941bucsfan Says:

Or maybe chicago had no interest in trading for guy thay has been unproductive all season. Sometimes we lose sight on this

  5. McBay Says:

There is nothing funny about it.

  6. Jjuice32 Says:

AW should be on the trading block! I’m convinced for whatever reason the D is playing better without him. Have any of you noticed any drop off in the secondary without him?

  7. dan the bucs fan Says:

We are the favorites right now in Vegas to still win the nfc south. Nobody is getting traded. We are finally figuring things out. Defense is actually pretty good the offense has to understand now we are a run first ball club. We will beat Atlanta and if we upset Chicago then Todd Bowles is officially off the hot seat! What a crazy world!

Now if we lose to Atlanta all best are off! Then we will trade everyone. This Atlanta game is Todd Bowles last stand! Lets see what happens!

BWAHAHAHA !! Jason Licht do a trade ? and for one of his draftees ?
I would have cleaned up in the prediction market if there was a bet on whether JL would do a trade – NO NEVER – I would also bet that come November 11 no Bucs trades will have occurred

  10. Fanofdabucs Says:

Simmons is not only a great run stuffer, he also sacks the QB regularly.

As for JL making any of these trades that folks want to keep talking about, nothing will happen until after Sunday.

Bucs win, and they could become buyers. Lose and all hope is officially lost and then all these trade talks should ramp up quickly.

  11. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Except the Bucs are gonna win another 9 games this year because Robinson is going to run a gap scheme and Baker saw Daniels win as a game manager and Todd is finally telling his talented corners to play tight.

It’s the first game in November week
And the Jason Lite , Fraud Bowels team has won
    TWO FREAKING GAMES!
this is the only thing we should be talking about!

    2025 losing streak
    2026 losing streak
Yeah…. Just a little bit longer

  13. ProffeserVonBrainStorm Says:

Licht will never make a bold move at the deadline. He isn’t capable of that any longer. If your IQ is below 60 you won’t understand that.

He’s going to sit on his fat alcohol swollen hands and whistle past the graveyard.

The HC\DC is working on a guaranteed contract and wins no longer are a factor in his employment status.

It’s all on auto pilot. Inept decision making gets you extended with a raise.

“Joe would not have moaned if the Bucs dealt Vea for a reasonable draft haul.”

Yea, nah. Would send the worst message to the locker room and for all that, why not just do it a few months back when Vita “asked” for a trade?

  15. SkunkApe Says:

I don’t think Vea got bumped to 30. I think he got a 30 million extension, which was a 6 million bump this year and a base 24 next year. So he’s at 24mil in ‘26 and ‘27.

  16. HeavyE Says:

We have to get a new GM, HC & QB, next year for this team to move forward and to get back to winning ways, We never do anything to improve the team, during the Year, it’s getting Old……. New Leadership all around!!!!

  17. Ron Potter Says:

I wouldn’t have cried about losing Vea for a good draft haul either, Joe. Love Vea and wish him well and ok with him being still here. But, this Atlanta game might inspire some movement if we lose. “A team with good leaders/captains never loses two games in a row.” – Bruce Arians

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Bucs didn’t win 2 Super Bowls solely by picking good draft picks.
A huge factor was they acquired 2 QB’s that were significant upgrades that contributed heavily to both teams’ success.
If and when Mayfield starts producing in accordance with what he’s being paid, the Bucs will have a team that can realistically compete for a Championship.
Having a fire sale on veterans now will set the team back and dishearten everyone except draft order fanatics.

  19. Jerseybuc Says:

    For two first rounders?!
Absolutely would of traded VV for that

  20. OurYear Says:

We should have never resigned Vita. Paying his “ ransom” before other teams saw how unproductive he is now only diminished his trade value. Should have traded him before he proved he is lazy and faked a back injury. He’s not a leader on this team as Joe seems to report every week.
