Todd Bowles Doesn’t Believe David Walker Is A One-Trick Pony

High on David Walker.
Bucs fans are noticeably excited about edge rusher David Walker getting back on the field and in pads.
The Bucs haven’t tried to hide their enthusiasm. And his debut with the Bucs was delayed a year because Walker basically had his rookie season robbed by blowing out his knee in last summer’s first padded practice.
Bucs fans, like Joe, would just love to see Walker splash quarterbacks. He comes from a small school, perhaps rushing the passer from the edge is his calling — a designated pass rusher.
Bowles thinks that’s pigeonholing the youngster from Central Arkansas.
“I think he can do almost everything,” Bowles said. “Height-wise, he’s probably the shortest of the bunch, but everybody forgets he’s still 260-something. He plays with great leverage and power.
“I think he can play both sides. He’s probably a good inside picker as well, off the ball, doing some things like that. So, when he gets in pads [today] and we decipher it [throughout] this week, we’ll figure it out.”
Joe’s rooting for Walker. He seems like a good dude and Lord knows the Bucs need another edge rusher.
If Rueben Bain really is him and Walker lives up to the hype, that’s a helluva upgrade at a defense’s most important position.

Rookie DBs dont have enough on their plate, gotta learn 3 positions.
Bain and Walker and Diaby all have LB attached to their name and position so they gotta learn to cover RBs and TEs as well as rush the passer.
As usual, Bowles is training the men perfectly for his D. Jack of all trades, master of none.

I just can’t wait to see these guys play. Around this time of year I get a little tired of speculation and coaches getting too cute with “secrets” that are painfully obvious.
What would be really great though, would be if our defensive ends weren’t in coverage all of the time… if our pass rushers, could just rush the passer… that would be great.
imagine if in 2001, Simeon Rice was chasing Randy Moss instead of putting Culpepper into the dirt. that would’ve crazy.
I think we should all, as Bucs fans, play a drinking game where we do a shot or shotgun a beer every time Diaby or Bain drop into coverage. That way we will at least drown our sorrows in booze.

I still think this DEFENSE can be pretty good this year! Im pretty ‘bullish’ on it being a Top-15 group (at least)… As long as Bowles can stay out of his own way! I expected to get A LOT MORE outta Winfield Junior last season though, after coming back from ‘injuries’ and having a down year. And, why wouldn’t I had!? Hell, he literally SAVED Baker’s AND Bowles’ JOBS the season before, when HE morphed into Ed Frickin REED. We’ll see what happens!? I still believe THAT “OFFENSE” will look awfully ROUGH AGAIN, if Chris Godwin is not “CHRIS GODWIN” AGAIN. They ONLY thing continuing to save this team, is the NFC SOUTH.

I don’t know if I can take another 9-8 or 8-9 season.
Either suck or be good. Even NE is ahead of us now because they sucked first.
That’s why Bowles isn’t the right coach.
He has ALWAYS been a .500 coach.

I always want the Bucs to have a winning season. With that said, I’m really getting tired of Todd. I honestly want to see Mike Tomlin come back to his roots. That’s going to be a complicated situation with him being under contract with Pittsburgh. One can wish.

Our defense has steadily regressed as Lavante has fallen off and no suitable replacement for White. BOTH of those things have been addressed, I’m feeling good about it

Yeah Todd dont let the guy do what hes best at primarily. Let’s let him rush the passer occasionally so its a surprise and stop the run the rest of the time.

I’d settle for that one trick being completing padded practices, at this point. Once he gets that one trick down, we can start talking about the second and third tricks, and build from there.

Heh I just said this in the first David Walker article towards the end. Walker was Godzilla in Tokyo whenever he was on the field whether it was a run or a pass in school. So he may be a 3 down player here down the road. His size is virtually identical to Bain and he’s super quick and a strong tackler.

I believe you have to actually play a game to be assessed on your level of talent.
So far it’s less than zero for Walker. Anything to the contrary is just Polly positive ramblings.
Bowles is asleep at the wheel as usual.
