Sean Tucker Uncertainty From Todd Bowles

After the 2024 season and during the 2025 season, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles spoke openly about wanting/needing to get running back Sean Tucker the ball more often.
In limited work last year, Tucker had 8 touchdowns.
Today, however, Bowles said Tucker is in a back-and-forth battle for the No. 3 running back job with second-year man Josh Williams, whose rookie campaign stood out only for his six-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs.
The Bucs’ 53-man roster must be filed with the NFL by 6 p.m. on Sunday.
“That’s a tough battle. It kind of went back and forth every game,” Bowles said today of the alleged Tucker-Williams war. “Both of them can run the ball. Both of them return kicks, obviously. Both of them try to tackle on kickoff and punt team. … That’ll be a tough call because they’re both good football players.”
Tucker opened last night’s preseason finale with two punishing runs totaling 10 yards. First down, Bucs! Twice, however, he showed questionable pass blocking. Williams finished with 8 carries for a sad 21 yards behind the Bucs’ shaky second- and third-team offensive lines. Neither returned a kick.
Joe understands Tucker is due $3.5 million if he’s on the Week 1 roster, so the Bucs could keep both players on this weekend’s 53-man roster and still have time to squeeze Tucker into taking a pay cut. Joe suspects that’s what is going on and Bowles is on script.
Losing a 24-year-old productive and durable running back seems to be the last thing the Bucs should be doing.

In a previous thread, I wondered why the Bucs gave Tucker a relatively generous contract. I guess it was to play mind games with him by concocting “competition” for him so that they could renegotiate for a lower salary with the threat of a cheaper player available.

Seems like cut both. If a 3rd is needed in a game, use Kieft and Sharp. At least they can block. I’m sure one of the RBs, if not both, will make it to the practice squad if Bucky or Gainwell get injured.

Look at our 4 RBs: average 5’9 1/2″ & 202 lbs
1 – Gainwell … 5’9″ & 200 lbs
2 – Irving … 5’10” & 195 lbs
3 – Tucker … 5’10” & 205 lbs
4 – Williams … 5’9″ & 210 lbs
Now look at our QBs: average 6’1″ & 214 lbs
1 – Mayfield … 6’1″ & 215 lbs
2 – Browning … 6’2″ & 209 lbs
3 – Daniels … 6’1″ & 219 lbs
I’m surprised that any of our QBs or RBs can see over our OLine. We desperately need one THUMPER (along the lines of a Mike Alstott?) so that we can have ‘Thunder & Lightning’ instead of just ‘Lightning & more Lightning’.
Just for kicks, I looked at the QBs & RBs for our first opponent, the Bengals:

Now I know that QBs don’t play QBs, and RBs don’t play RBs, but we seem to be favoring smaller guys in the backfield. Gotta give the Bucs one thing though … at least they’re all shifty. Still, it’d be nice to have a bruiser or two in there.

Tucker has proven to be a better runningback than Bucky but again if Bowles likes a player they’re gonna start regardless. Tucker has dominated games and he’s on the verge of being cut ? That’s crazy Tucker has dominated good teams when they gave him a significant amount of reps in those games go watch the Bills game . Baker played good because of how Tucker played . This is the main problem with this franchise !!!

That’s why I’ve always said I don’t want 6-5 guards. I want 6-3 guards that are more stout.
And guards that Baker can see over.

Tucker is proven, Williams is not. Hate to lose Tucker over for the NFL a small sum of 3.5 in pay. It appears both players not great blockers or ST players. I say keep 2 QB’s and 4 RB. Neither Irving or Gainwell are very big. Tucker prove. In short yardage. I see nothing special at all in Browning

I thought Tucker did a good job on Special Teams last night. I thought maybe they were playing Tucker more to get some film out there for trade bait. The Bucs still don’t have any depth at cornerback. I don’t think there is much comparison between Tucker and Williams though. Tucker looks like the better player and he has already proven himself in regular season games.

Agreed DR, there is no substitute for flat out power. We don’t have it at RB. There aren’t any FB’s in the NFL anymore. Think Alstott was a dying breed at like 248 pounds. If we had a guy like that the Bucs could actually convert 3rd and short or 4th and 1.

A thumper is best run out of a 2 back set like Czonk and Kiik with a speedy guy like Mercury on the side.. See the perfect season. It is still viable. But Bowles is no Shula. I doubt Tampa will have a Bowles Steak House.

I think Tucker has proven enough to make the team as the 3rd down back. But im not going cry, whine and bitch if the team believes going in a nothing direction is best.
I’m more intrigued by Pyburn and what they decide to do with him. The kid is just a ball player and brings much needed energy to the defense. Really excited about this young, rebuilt defense. Might take half a season with all the new faces, but the Bucs are in such a better place defensively then they were last year at this time.

Tucker has had some good games and they seem to forget about him. He has breakaway speed and he is due to break out this season. Always have a good feeling about him being on the field to protect the ball and could break a long one any time. Hate to say it but, never been suspended or any kind of trouble. Hope they hold on to him!

Tucker could be a great wide zone back (when the blocking is perfect) but hes not shifty or elusive enough imo. Speed is, by far, his greatest asset.

Cards just traded Corey Kiner to New England for a 7th rounder. That’s the comp you get in today’s’ NFL for an RB at the back of the depth chart because it’s a devalued position.

Again, any team could have signed him to an offer sheet this summer and it wouldn’t have cost them a pick or anything, he was free if they wanted to pay for him, and no team did so. He is obviously not an NFL starter, or someone would have done so.
He’s a basic north/south runner who has very limited vision, does a great Michael Pittman impression in that he just runs up the back of his blockers, and rarely makes a cutback. He’s had 2 good games in 3 years, and those good games were vs a Saints team that had completely quit, and vs the Bills, who had the 30th ranked rushing defense. Outside of those two games, he’s rarely done anything worth note – other than blow blocks and almost get Baker killed.
Last night, with perhaps his career on the line, he rushed the ball 5 times for 15 yards vs a bunch of 3rd and 4th stringers. He didn’t get much blocking, but he also didn’t do anything with his carries. Much worse than that, he got ran over pass blocking and got his QB sacked. Then, later, on special teams, he misses a pretty routine tackle on a punt return.
I think Tucker is fine as a 3rd RB, but the idea he’s anything more than that is pretty ridiculous and just based on people watching highlights, and not watching the other 99% of the time when he gets the ball and doesn’t do anything, misses wide open holes, or just runs with his head down right into his lineman never giving the play time to develop.
With that said, the Bucs should keep him if they can, but that extra $2.4M makes him a target. Maybe he takes a cut to stay, or perhaps the Bucs can trade him for like a conditional 6th or maybe a 7th to some GM who only watches YouTube highlights.
Also I’m not sold on Williams by any means. He seems to have good vision and some nice moves, but it’s all been vs 3rd and 4th teamers, so hard to know if it will translate or not. But, as I’ve always said and continue to say, RBs are a dime a dozen, certainly for backups, so if I’m the Bucs, I’m looking at the waivers to see if any big backs become available.

I guess I would say he has not had much opportunity, but had great success in two games he did have opportunity, albeit against poor defenses. I would have liked to see more opportunities before signing Gainwell. If the offensive line can open holes like it used to he could break a lot of runs. He is fast.

Cutting Tucker would be reductive or just flat stoopid. WHEN (not if) Bucky gets hurt…love the guy, but he’s not exactly Mr. Availability…are we going to go to “good guy” Kenny Gainwell??
Gainwell is here on a $7M per contract because (a) he can catch a ball and just had a banner season (for Kenny) with Aaron Rodgers and few receiving options and worse RB options, and (b) he’s a 25% of his touches 1st down guy. Great, but give him the ball on 1st and 2nd and he’s highly unlikely to sniff a first or even threaten to do so. Tucker is the only guy in that backfield aside from Bucky to be reliable to not just give you 2nd and choice or 3rd and manageable, but also, every time he touches the ball, to go the house. That last bit is actually more likely than when, even St. Bucky, touches the ball because he has a great jump cut but doesn’t have the same speed.
ST was a steal of a UDFA because of injury concerns coming out of college. Injury concerns which haven’t been concerns since he came out of college.
If we need to pair off $3.5M of salary cap next year to sign a Mauch or a Yaya or to afford Bake’s franchise tag, sobeit. Cutting ST coming into a season with a starter who managed a 4 game and 5 game run, not all of those with full availability, as the starter last season is meaningful. Especially when the next best backup is a guy who can’t tote the rock for meaningful gain on 1st and 2nd and an unproven UDFA without the aforementioned speed (or jump cut).
Maybe the earlier sentiment of “do him a favor” is correct, but this is largely a no brainer.

That was a big win for Christopher Columbus High School. Here in Las Vegas…Bishop Gorman may be more popular than the Raiders. Gorman made it interesting at the end. It’s still crazy to me that high school teams travel from NV to FL for example. No Nevada team will play Bishop Gorman any longer.

Tucker has proven he can produce in real games. “He needs more touches” Bowles said. So, now he’s on the chopping block because…..he’s not a great tackler on special teams? He’s a running back. They’re supposed to run with the football, and catch it then run with it. He’s proven he can do that well. Maybe the thirst for versatility that has dominated defensive player decisions now is there for offense too?
Whatever. I no longer have neighbors with a pool, but I see something floating in the community pool so I’m going to check that out.

Cantankeris. Agree that we should keep Tucker. But I’m thinking Gainwell brings more to the table than “because he can catch a ball”. I think his football IQ and his veteran experience and leadership qualities will help our backfield. But I sure agree on keeping Tucker. I think he had a heart murmur or something coming out of Syracuse.

Gainwell has never been and will never be a home run hitter. I don’t dislike him but he’s x2 Tuckers salary and if Bucky goes down, which seems likely, we are fickened if KG is the first option.
There’s also the corollary, which is that if Bucky doesn’t go down and it’s Bucky AND Sean Tucker we have two backs who can break your back anytime they want to. Given the s*** show that is Zach Robinson’s offense I think that’s probably a good thing to have.

I do want the Bucs to keep and use Tucker but we just got a good look at his limitations, particularly his lack of development as a blocker. If they are going to pay him half as much as Gainwell, give him half as many touches as well.
Both Gainwell and Tucker are natural red zone role players and could be deadly in two back sets together or with Irving. Both Gainwell and Tucker scored 8 TDs in 2025. Gainwell reached that total on 187 touches. Tucker hit 8 on only 91 touches. Like in Gainwell’s first two and highest scoring years in the league, almost all of Tucker’s touches in his first two years of use came in the red zone, hence the high TD to touch ratio. Over his third and fourth seasons in Philly Gainwell lost his goal line touches to Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley and his TD total evaporated but his skills did not.
The difference in compensation for these two backs who each scored 8 TDs in 2025 comes down to the difference in their blitz pick-up ability. Gainwell is too small to stonewall anyone but he never loses discipline or misses even the sneakiest of blitzes. Whether coming from the A gap or the edge again well is almost always in perfect position and uses perfect technique to effectively catch block rushers. The awareness Gainwell brings is truly rare and he is getting paid for it. Well.
Tucker’s home run potential is something Gainwell lacks and is worth paying well for too, so I’m hoping Robinson can give all three backs work in appropriate parts of the field. I’d rather use Tucker proactively to keep the mileage low on the backs ahead of him on the depth chart rather than hold him as insurance only to be released if someone gets injured. I’d prefer RBs with wounded egoes to RBs on the injury report.
I’d like Bucky Irving to shine like he did in 2024 but it would be great if he could do it on 100 less touches. The Bucs have the horses and I’m pumped to see them run all of them.
