Bucs Training Camp 2026 Day 9 Practice Notes

Bucs tight ends coach Justin Peelle watches his tight ends in blocking drills Sunday, the final Bucs training camp practice at home this summer open to the public.
And then there were none.
Bucs practices open to the public in New Jersey this week and at Jacksonville later this month are sold out. And yesterday was the final practice open to Bucs fans in Tampa. The next Bucs training camp practice that fans can watch won’t be until next summer.
What fans did see Sunday at One Buc Palace was perhaps the third Bucs rookie beginning to blossom and show off a complete game.
No special guests were at practice on Sunday other than Vita Vea.
* The Bucs decided to start 11-on-11 with a bang. Following a nondescript run, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield uncorked a bomb deep down the left seam that Chris Godwin caught effortlessly. Zyon McCollum was looking for Vaseline to treat his burns.
* Godwin on a run (per Bucs media relations protocol, Joe cannot offer further details of the play).
* Godwin catches a Mayfield pass over the middle on a medium-long throw.
* Mayfield throws to the right side for Emeka Egbuka in double coverage, incomplete. Ball went off Egbuka’s hands.
* Godwin catches a screen pass on the left side.
* Bauer Sharp catches a medium-long pass over the middle from Jake Browning.
* Sean Tucker runs through a massive hole to the left of center.
* Garrett Greene had Damarion Williams beat down the left side and a huge bomb was there if the pass was on the mark. Browning’s pass was not on the mark. Short actually.
* Tucker takes a screen pass on the left side from Browning.
* Browning tries to connect with Dean Patterson to the right side and cornerback Ayden Garnes slams the ball to the turf. You could hear the pop of Garnes’ hand hitting the ball all the way across the field.
* Bucky Irvin runs right and cuts back for a nice gain.
* Mayfield rolls left and he throws on the run for Payne Durham who makes a fingertip catch. That may be the best catch Joe has seen from Durham.
* Mayfield tries for Ted Hurts down the right sideline and it is incomplete as Hurst was well-defended on the play.
* Kenny Gainwell catches a pass from Mayfield in the left flat for a big gain.
* Mayfield dirts the ball. Tykee Smith was in the backfield.
* Browning throws to Patterson to the right with a short pass.
* Chris Braswell (!) “sacks” Browning. Joe is curious to see how Braswell plays up in New Jersey this week. Joe swears nearly every practice Braswell makes a play (against the second team offense). In his two previous seasons, you had to check the roster to make sure he was still on the team. Can Braswell carry this momentum to the Garden State?
* Browning with a short, quick pass to Hurst along the right sideline for a short touchdown.
* Same play, this time to the right and the receiver was Patterson who scores.
* Jalon Daniels launches a ball down the right sideline to Greene who drops it. Joe swears this Greene, a former West Virginia quarterback, drops more passes than he catches. Many more. Unless he is a practice squad quarterback, in a few weeks, you’ll see Greene when he brings your DoorDash order to your crib.
* Bucky is wide ass open on a crossing pattern from the left and Mayfield hits him for a huge gain.
* Mayfield tries for Cade Otton down the right seam and it is broken up by Jacob Parrish. Joe thought perhaps Otton didn’t turn around looking for the ball quick enough.
* Godwin catches a Mayfield pass down the right sideline.
* Joe just noticed the Bucs are in “shells” today, which is half-pads. Helmet and shoulder pads. No leg pads. Some players are wearing shorts.
* Bucky runs to the right.
* Browning tries for Dennis Houston down the left sideline. Linebacker Nick Jackson hung with Houston and fought for the ball, preventing Houston from grabbing it.
* Browning throws to the right for Patterson. The ball was about cock-high, which proved to be too low for Patterson.
* Browning throws to Patterson to the right sideline and Patterson shows some wiggle to shake loose and get a few yards.
* Sharp skies to catch a pass from Browning down the left seam.
* Mayfield rolls left and hits Bucky down the left sideline on the run. Pretty play.
* Gainwell goes up the middle and he is swallowed up by Calijah Kancey.
* Bucky catches a Mayfield pass short to the right.
* Mayfield with a quick throw to Godwin to the left.
* Jump pass by Mayfield to the right flat for Gainwell who gets good yardage out of the play.
* Egbuka goes down the right sideline and has to come back for a ball from Mayfield but he comes up with the catch.
* Joe may be nuts, but he swears Egbuka had a better rookie camp than he’s having this year.
* Mayfield throws behind Egbuka near the left sideline who damn near made a one-handed catch anyway. Egbuka reached back with one hand and nearly pulled that ball in. Josh Hayes had decent coverage.
* This was the first splash catch by Hurst. Joe described it in this story. You can see the catch here and here.
* Mayfield is flushed to his right and he misses Godwin down the right seam.
* Houston catches a Browning pass down the left sideline. Williams was in coverage.
* Travis Shaw (Texas) gets a sack. Browning faked a handoff but no one was open.
* Eric Rivers catches a short Browning pass down the left seam. Williams in coverage.
* Browning aims for Rivers, who gets a step on Tykee Smith and Williams down the right sideline but Rivers doesn’t like the ball in his hands. Drop.
* Browning rolls right and throws for Greene down the right seam, incomplete.
* Browning throws to Kadarius Calloway (New Mexico State) at the right sideline.
* Browning tries for Greene again, incomplete again.
Goal line
* Godwin catches a pass along the left sideline from Mayfield.
* Hurst has his second splash play of the day. Caught a touchdown against Hayes where Hurst sort of Mossed Jacob Parrish. The ball was probably too tall for Parrish to make a play on it but he did have good coverage. Joe described the play here. You can see it here.
* Rivers looked like he had a touchdown from Browning along the left sideline but Rivers bobbled the ball.
* Browning to Houston in the back of the end zone to the right, touchdown!
* Daniels rolls to the right and connects with Greene for a touchdown in the back of the end zone to the right. Greene finally catches a ball.
And that’s all she wrote for the final Bucs training camp practice at One Buc Palace open to the public this summer. Today, the Bucs don’t practice as they travel to New Jersey with two practices against the Jets and a worthless regular season game on Friday night.

Egbuka lost his confidence last year because he kept dropping balls, and hopefully he gets his mojo back because we need him to be good Egbuka and not bad Egbuka.
I also lost confidence in him until he earns it back by catching the ball consistently.

I found this training camp schedule from 2001, all practices open to the public. Interesting to compare that era, which was already toned down from the Ray Perkins 3-a-day era, to the modern Camp Cupcake era. That’s not a dig at Bowles, it’s a dig at the NFLPA who wants all these soft practices, since it leads to more injuries (which is a fact – look it up, more injuries now than ever), and every new player signed to the roster has to pay dues to the NFLPA in addition to the injured players paying dues. And as we know, there’s a lot of single mothers dancing in strip clubs that are relying on the NFLPA executes.

Joe, thank you for the notes.
Baker connecting on those deep throws to Chris, etc., is good to see. We know he has a cannon for an arm. We just need an OC and offensive scheme that unleashes it. Accuracy on his part helps, lol. But, I’m hoping our offense is a little more aggressive this year when it comes to stretching the field.
It’s either good or bad that we’re seeing defenders in the backfield a lot more, depending on how you look at it. Sacks and TFLs keep the other team from scoring. But, is this an O-line/blocking issue? Or, is our revamped D that much better and playing much more aggressively?

Good see how this team does against a better offense and defense. Bake won’t be throwing against Zion all season. The scrimmages against the Jets will be very telling. Want to see what Bain will do as well.

Zyon is really inconsistent, making plays one day and then giving them up the next.
Bucky and Gainwell seem to be wide a$$ open a lot. Where are the LBs ?

DBS . You guys call everyone a fan of a player when you don’t like a player that really beat out the player you like. Look i don’t care about none of them that’s why I can criticize all of them when needed. Baker was bad the second half of the season and the injury excuse is just a cover up for the players you guys like. And the players you guys don’t like you guys never use the injury excuses.

I don’t see the bucs going to the superbowl with this roster .quarterback and coach. The roster is to young on offense the quarterback dose not have the ability to elevate the team and the hc is not a real HC he’s a DC . NFC championship or bust this is year 4 no more excuses. Go bucs!!

The Bucs (so far) have been cool with Joe being as detailed as these reports are.
