Bucs Added A Speed Coach
August 2nd, 2026This fits into the enhanced attention to football detail at One Buc Palace this year.
Joe was intrigued yesterday hearing Todd Bowles tell Inside Football “we got a speed coach in here” as a part of a broader plan to prevent injury.
There’s no mention on the Buccaneers’ official website about a speed coach hiring or position, and the Bucs’ new head strength and conditioning coach was an in-house promotion and his assistant was on staff last year.
Back in 2019, Bucco Bruce Arians arrived in Tampa with Roger Kingdom, the former U.S. Olympic gold medal hurdler and college football player. He was the Bucs’ speed coach into 2021.
Joe loves the “speed coach” addition — whomever it may be. Running is a massive part of football, especially defensive football. Not coaching the finer points of that skill would be an opportunity lost.
Joe sees the Bucs’ 2026 emphasis on details while watching Danny Smith coach special teams. The situational work and the pace of those periods has a very fresh look and feel from past year. There are other examples, too. The Bucs’ head strength coach, Chad Wade, also has drawn raves from players for tweaks to that process.

I’m not quite sure what I make of that, Joe. Don’t suppose it could hurt anything, I guess. I always heard you can’t teach speed.

Didn’t help Wirfs for his running drill, and I don’t think Morrison has had a lesson yet?

This team should be improved in many areas this year. Especially priority number one that putrid pass Defense of recent past. Go Bucs!

???
You mean out of the massive coaching and training staff of professionals andโฆ.
90 NFL players working out at OBP these guys donโt know what the speed coach is going to teach???
I get it on one hand while I am scratching my head with the other.

I just don’t understand if the goal is to improve why not get a DC if you’re going to retain the HC. Bucs get all these side guys like clock coaches and speed coaches to give the team a better chance to win. I don’t see how adding a DC the past off-season would be some kind of hindrance. Having a extra set a eyes in a area that needs improvement could only help especially having a defensive leaning draft.

โI donโt think Morrison has had a lesson yet?โ Ouch, Hodad.
I think this kid had operations on both his hips, something was wrong with them. One of those surgeries was right after we drafted him, I believe.
Heโs never been right, health wise, and they keep saying itโs a hamstring issue. Iโm thinking heโs got the kind of hitch in his get along that can be the end of a football career.
Man, I hope not. But not everyone makes it in this league. Not by a long shot.

Inwoodjeremy, I completely agree with you! Maybe not a true DC, but a young up and coming coach that will challenge Bowles daily as well as an extra set of eyes. Know your weaknesses and surround yourself with people who have those strengths. If you depend on coaches like the last special teams coach, then you get what you deserve.

I’d love to see a footwork coach. It’s the most important fundamental IMO.
Rex Ryan maybe. ๐

As I was waking up this morning and read this articles headline I thought I read โspeech coachโ. Thought for a few minutes about if the Bucs could use a speech coach. Then I rubbed my eyes and read the headline again lol.

How about a HC coach. You know he could offer tips on in game adjustments, when to go for it on 4th down and when not to. He could offer up subtle tips on motivating players before big games and during them. He could suggest what to do with players who are bored. Tips on when to bench an underperforming starter. And more….

Morrison was. A wasted pick. Heโs always hurt. Why select a defensive back coming off of surgery. What has he been able to do to help the Bucs team!!!

โJoe loves the โspeed coachโ addition โ whomever it may be.โ
Roger Kingdom:
โSince retiring, Kingdom has worked as head track and field coach at California University in Pennsylvania, an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Arizona Cardinals and, in 2019, joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a speed and conditioning coach. With Tampa Bayโs 2021 Super Bowl win, Kingdom joins โBulletโ Bob Hayes as the only two people to have Olympic gold medals and a Super Bowl ring.โ
This is who we brought back in as speed coach.

no only select him but bank on him as an important player letting dean walk and not adding quality depth.
