Somebody’s Untruthful About The Baker Mayfield Extension — And Signs Point To Mayfield

The strong Baker Mayfield insinuation yesterday that the Bucs offered him a two-year contract extension at less than $50 million per year is highly dubious.
Mayfield told Jeremy Fowler of ESPN that he lobbied the Bucs to be in the $50 million quarterback club without asking for a change-the-market deal. But, per Mayfield, he didn’t get that offer.
A dozen NFL quarterbacks have contracts that pay an average of $50 million or more per season, per OverTheCap.com.
Jeremy Fowler: Did you make a stance that you belong in that top-10 [quarterback pay] range — 50-plus million dollars? That’s sort of the market and where you are.
Baker Mayfield: Yeah. And I told [the Bucs] and I said it publicly, I was never trying to reset the market. I know where I fit in on that. I’m not over-realistic on that. But it’s also, I know just to be compensated and put in that category, and salary cap keeps going up. And the guys that are going to re-sign next year, it’s going to look a lot different. So, at the end of the day, it’ll probably be still top-15 [quarterback pay] next year at this time. But it’s unfortunate they failed to recognize it.
Fowler: How far away were they from that range?
Mayfield: Pretty far.
Without providing hard numbers, that’s Mayfield essentially saying he didn’t get offered close to $50 million annually for 2027 and 2028. His contract expires after this season.
Fowler also asked Mayfield what value the Bucs placed on him in a contract-extension offer to make him feel disrespected and undervalued.
“It was all three — between years, average [salary] and guarantees,” Mayfield said. “Probably the most disappointing is years. Didn’t get offered anything over two [years].
Jenna Laine of ESPN.com wrote a story about this yesterday afternoon, and then came a mysterious night edit to the story. Fowler noted an update on X directing fans to check it out.
It sounds like Fowler talked to Mayfield’s agent — and someone tied to the Bucs — and Mayfield wasn’t truthful when it came to the money on a two-year extension.
The Buccaneers felt their offers in the final days of the negotiation were competitive, including a two-year deal worth slightly above $100 million in total, sources told Fowler.
Several factors went into Mayfield turning down the Bucs’ overtures, sources told Fowler:
- Mayfield felt the structure of the contract was not suitable, mainly the guaranteed money.
- Mayfield was adamant about wanting a longer commitment than two years.
- Mayfield used contract comps such as Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55 million per year), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55 million) and San Francisco’s Brock Purdy ($53 million) during the negotiation process. Mayfield’s camp felt Mayfield was among the league’s best bargain players in recent years, ranking third in passing yards (12,237) and second in touchdown passes (95) since 2023. That had to change.
- And, perhaps mainly, Mayfield was long dismayed by the team’s low initial offer in June, to the point that one source close to him wondered whether that fueled his direct tone in his press conferences weeks later.
By the time the Bucs were set to report Tuesday, Mayfield called things off. Still, even without hitting Mayfield’s direct number, the Bucs felt they were closer in range than perceived, sources told Fowler.
Before June minicamp, Joe was told the Bucs were prepared to pay Mayfield more than $50 million annually on an extension — real money, not mystery math common in NFL contracts. The team wasn’t hiding its desire to “write that check,” as Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer said in the following exhange with JoeBucsFan.com at the NFL annual meeting in April.
JoeBucsFan.com: Is it your hope that something is resolved with Baker this offseason, with an extension that makes him a franchise quarterback beyond the three-year contract he has now?
Joel Glazer: That’s part of [GM] Jason [Licht’s] planning and everything. And I know Jason is looking at all, not only [Baker], any other contract. And it’s a constant thing that you look at. That’s something that Jason and [assistant GM] Mike [Greenberg] and his staff, [VP of football research] Jackie [Davidson], carefully evalute and there’s a time and a place for everything. And everything always takes care of itself.
JoeBucsFan.com: But is Baker your guy? Are you all on board with Baker?
Joel Glazer: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, he’s gone above and beyond anything we could have asked or hoped of Baker. Everybody loves him. He performs on the field, gives 250 percent when he’s on that field. And that’s all you can ask.
Before this line of questioning, Glazer said he has no issue paying top dollar for a franchise quarterback because that means things are going well.
“That doesn’t hurt at all to write that check,” Glazer said. “It’s something that all the teams do if you have a good quarterback.”
Was Mayfield telling the truth yesterday about his extension offer? Or does Mayfield have a bumbling agent who didn’t properly explain the Bucs’ offer to his client? That’s unclear.
Joe has no reason to believe the Bucs changed their stance on Mayfield or were foolish enough to offer Mayfield the equivalent (or less) than the projected 2027 franchise tag value and think he would smile and like that — and not make a public stink.
Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman, the venerable JoeBucsFan.com columnist, has said many times over the past year that Team Glazer “couldn’t be happier with Mayfield” and has “no desire to start over with a new quarterback.”
Bucs fans should feel confident taking Kaufman’s words to the bank.
Mayfield is an emotional guy, so it makes sense that he’d be incensed by the Bucs not offering him an extension that includes the 2029 season. That’s fair. But to think the Bucs didn’t try to put Mayfield in the $50 million club is farfetched at best.

I want Mayfield to resign but he’s got to realize that there are areas where he needs to improve. Playoff wins, Prime time record, protecting his body, interceptions and deep ball accuracy. If he had finished the 2025 season and won in the playoffs, like he played the first 8 games and how he played in 2024 he would of had a legitimate case for 60 mil per and even reset the market.
He may of been hurt but he didn’t play up to even the 50 million standard the last 9 games. Perspective of a Baker Mayfield fan but I’m not waiving any Pom Poms!

It doesn’t seem that far fetched when the clarified offer was just over $100 and likely made up a lot of incentives/escalators, reducing the average annual salary to below 50 mil. When that’s the case, typically the phrase “up to” X amount is used. That’s not what happened here.–Joe

Instead of calling Mayfield a liar, Joe, why not tell your readers that there are 16 NFL QBs with over 160 million guaranteed dollar contracts, and the vast majority of those are over 200 million- with the vast majority being written over the last year or two or three?
Revenue is going up for owners, the cap rises. So they want to pay Baker bottom half guaranteed dollars-In Old Dollars!

Some of the deals that have been made were done with poor judgement and many if not most regret it and are suffering because they don’t have enough money for other players and a good portion of the quarterbacks are under performing the deal. A lot of these deals never made sense in the first place. Why should Licht and the Glazers make the same mistakes that have been ridiculed by the media and the fans.

Get the GM in front of the press, be asked questions about the contract and then let folks draw their own conclusion! This will shed more light on the issue than the back and forth on any website and include Baker’s agent too! Until then, folks will make their own assumptions and just muddy the water.

Baker never should have entered into a conversation with Fowler or anyone else about the specifics of the offer he received. Talking about the specifics of the numbers is obviously above his pay grade. The fact that he was offered 50 million per year is great but if it was for a two year contract, that’s insulting when compared to any of the other contracts of those in the 50 million dollar club. Beyond that, do we know what portion of it would have been guaranteed? That would be even more insulting if it wasn’t even fully guaranteed. I can’t think of any reason why Baker would find it in his best interest to be untruthful. Even though Baker is older than most of those other quarterbacks, a contract of such short duration doesn’t exactly demonstrate commitment and is probably what triggered this along with an initial low ball offer.

Baker, with his 2-11 record in primetime and playoff games, thinks very highly of himself. Also his nutjob Baker Boi(s) do as well. But what Baker has been with the Bucs is a very inconsistent QB who folds under pressure. The Bucs offered him a middling deal, because he’s a middling QB.
In any case, waiting until the season is over to do something is best for everyone. If Baker bounces back from a terrible final 11 weeks last year, and plays like he did in 2024, he’s going to make a ton of money. But if Baker continues to be the inconsistent QB who is always struggling with his “health” – well the Bucs are clearing house and getting a new QB and coach anyways.
It truly is amazing how the Baker Boi(s) will literally tell you Baker is the best playoff QB in NFL history, is THE best QB in the NFL right now, and yet they’re scared that the Bucs won’t give him a new deal, as if the best QB in the history of the game wouldn’t have his pick of any team. Sometimes the smartest move is to let your play do the negotiating. Go out, stay healthy, win games, and make the front office’s decision impossible. If you’re worth franchise quarterback money, they’ll pay it. Until then, what happens behind the doors at One Buc Place is business.

I Fricken KNEW-IT. Baker is FULL-UV-IT. He can’t use “comps” based off of Love, Lawrence, & Purdy… HE WILL BE “30. FREAKING. The 2024 season with COEN was nothing but an outlier, to begin with. An anomaly. Going off of HIS 2023 & 2025 seasons ALONE… And, he hasn’t shown that HE is worth-it. HE HASN’T. I mean, the ONLY reason HE “beat out” Darnold in Carolina, was because of Darnold having a horrible ankle-sprain. Cause, as SOON AS Darnold was finally recovered… HE replaced BAKER, taking over the ‘starting’ job, and then BAKER was promptly RELEASED. It just is what it is. The 2024 season with COEN, just skews his overall ‘numbers’ during his current 3-year Bucs-run. 💯

If it was “longterm” that he wanted… Then, “MY DEAL” made the most sense. 3-years, at $135-MIL, with about $85-MIL Guaranteed. But, HE WANTED to be the $50-MILLION MAN. You DON’T GET BOTH. On a more somber note, Falcons defensive coordinator, Jeff Ulbrich, just lost his wife to cancer.
As one who has born witness to his young wife’s suffering through this horrible disease, my heart goes out to him. Between the chemo, radiation and numerous side effects from each, anyone who is tasked with going through these treatments has my utmost respect. These people go through hell! Spend some time in an chemo treatment room. Forty treatment chairs (I’d guessed they’d be 2-3), and most all full. It will change you forever.
After three years of suffering, and still suffering to a degree, it looks like my wife is gonna make it. The dreaded fear I imagined, through many sleepless nights, has come to Jeff. No words …
We spend an inordinate amount of time here arguing about a game. Cancer is no game. And unless you experience it, you’ll never fully understand.

Again, 31 is not old for a QB. He could still potentially play a couple more 4 year contracts at a high level. Maybe even more. The Bucs really better think about what they are doing because they are playing with fire here. 4 years at around 53 with at least 2-3 years guaranteed should be the baseline. That’s not a lot and the cap grows rapidly. The only year they’d feel even a bit of a squeeze is this one, and they can make it work easily.

How soon it is forgotten that Baker signed for 4 million plus some incentives his first year with the Bucs. The last three years contract was for 100 million. That makes his average salary for the Bucs 25 million per year which is very low for a NFL starting QB.

MelvinJunior, so you feelings about Coen reveals that he recognizes a quarterback’s strengths, designs an offense that plays to those strengths and puts the quarterback into his comfort zone! Using the same concepts with Baker in 2024, Baker had perhaps the best year of his career, right? Then had Coen be retained in 2026 as HC or OC, Baker’s 2024 season would have not been an outlier but the start of success occurring because for the first time in his NFL career, he had a quality offensive coordinator, right or wrong? If wrong, explain why?

Munch and his girlfriend, the loquacious Melvin Jr, have been wrong about Baker before he took a snap for the Bucs. They believe redemption is the back half of 2025 season with an injured Mayfield trying to play behind a junior college O line.
Real fans are not buying this nonsense. They have seen enough of Baker to know he can lead the team to a Super Bowl. Expect Baker to eclipse his 2024 season. When he does, Munch will sulk and disappear from these pages.

Calling Baker “classless” because he answered questions about his contract is a stretch. I’ve already said I don’t love players discussing contract negotiations publicly, I think those conversations belong behind closed doors. But answering a reporter’s direct questions is a lot different than holding out, skipping camp, demanding a trade, or trashing the organization.
He reported to training camp, is preparing for the preseason and Week 1, and continues to practice with his teammates. That’s where the team-first mentality is. Actions carry more weight than headlines.
Wanting security after putting your body on the line doesn’t mean winning is an afterthought. Every player negotiates, and every team negotiates back. That’s business, not betrayal.
You keep calling him a loser, selfish, washed, and now classless, yet the very organization you’re defending is trying to extend him. Teams don’t negotiate extensions with quarterbacks they believe can’t lead them.
And “classless”? No. Classless is attacking someone’s character because they answered questions you didn’t like. Criticize his play if you want, that’s fair. But inventing motives and turning a contract discussion into a character assassination says far more about the criticism than it does about Baker.
One last thing: if Baker truly “only cared about Baker,” the easiest leverage would have been a holdout. Instead, he’s in camp competing while negotiations continue. That doesn’t prove everyone has to agree with his approach, but it certainly doesn’t support calling him classless.

So who will our QB next year,, Geno is my guess , but JJ from Minn is young, Jacobi is another name and maybe Tua, Stroud or Mac Jones ,,, All this while Bakers Houston Texans will be one of the favorites to win the SB,, 4 years 53 per , get it done Bucs or become the old Bucs that no one watched or cared about ,,, Also when it’s time to hire a new HC , having a QB is much bigger to lure a guy then if the coach has to wonder who he might get suck with at QB

I’m seeing both sides of this argument. On one hand, it seems the team is right on the verge of declaring the competitive rebuild a failure and starting from the ground up (so why sign Baker long term?). On the other, *IF* Baker performs well and *IF* the Bucs offense returns to Liam Coen-live performance under Zac Robinson and *IF* the defense does its job the way they’re supposed to… you know the rule about three “if’s,” don’t’cha?

Sounds like the true story is coming out that the Glazers are willing to pay Baker $50M plus per year and the stumbling point is the 2 year contract extension. Everything boils down to money and as the old saying goes It’s been the ruin of many a poor boy. What’s it going to be fellows, IS IT ALL ABOUT THE MONEY or WHAT IS IT REALLY?.

Draft a qb in next years draft to be the guy, a 32 year old average player is not the answer. Some blame needs to be on Jason too for not being able to find a franchise qb in his 12 YEAR tenure, that’s sad. Baker is not the guy he might be a little overhyped. I think the real fans are just tired of the delusion tbh.

There is a shred of truth in saying there is a level of irrationality with some of Bakers most ardent fans and that would probably be true for fans of any player. That’s called fanaticism but in a positive sense because they want to see the team and the man succeed. You can multiply that level of irrationality by 100 times or more for those negative fanatics that despise him. Their goal is not only to see him fail but to fail miserably, they probably even secretly pray for him to be seriously injured although they would never admit to that in this forum. So they spew their venom in the form of half truths and lies with an occasional backhanded compliment and hope for the team to fail so that they can be rid of him. Ironically, the saddest thing is they probably will be disappointed when Baker is gone and they’ll have to find a new target. Rinse and repeat. Sick bastards!

What 2025 “trap?” You mean the one where his Oline was playing 3rd stringers and the entire middle of the line was mush?
Baker toughed it out but that wasn’t enough for Munch and the other girls. Brady would have refused to play behind that O line last year.

OK, lets take a step back.
First, I don’t love that Baker is airing the laundry in public. That’s not a good plan.
Second, Baker’s AVERAGE salary over the past 4 years is ~25M/yr… which is very very below starter money. That’s rookie contract money at best. Especially when he’s 2nd in the league TDs and 3rd in yardage over that same period. As for playoff wins and super bowl wins, only 4 QBs have a SB win in the past 4 years… and the team makes a HUGE difference in that result. I realize some here (Munch) think that should be the standard, but by that standard, none of the other 31 QBs should be paid at all…
Third, the Franchise Tag and Transition Tag will be between $43M and $50M, so that seems like the floor for the negotiations. Why would Baker take less than that?
AND, those tags both make the $30M in deferred money due immediately. Clearly, the Buc’s cannot tag him and give up $70M to $80M in one season… BTW: that money also comes due immediately if he walks in Free Agency…
Fourth, I can guarantee you that there will be a line of suitors willing to pay Baker $50M+ if he reaches free agency. The Cardinals, Vikings, Steelers, Dolphins, Jets, Falcons, Titans and even the Browns jump immediately to mind. Yes, some of those will be drafting from next year’s mega class (and many will miss on those).
Fifth, The Bucs will NOT be in position to draft one of the top QBs from next year’s class unless they totally fall apart in 2026… not likely to happen… So, not likely to have a plan for ‘after Baker’ that has any real chance of success…
Bottom Line: the Buc’s HAVE to sign him, and probably at least north of $45M. The real conflicts are over length of contract, incentives, and guaranteed money. I suspect Baker’s PO’ed over the short term of the contract, and probably the guaranteed money.

Gipper, what exactly is the issue with my take on what to do with Baker? I’ve literally said let him play out the year and see what happens – and I said if your version of events turns out to be correct, that Baker is going to get a huge extension.
I’ve never said don’t let him play this year, trade him right this second, I don’t want him starting, etc. I’ve said after he played so bad last year he got his entire offensive staff fired – you don’t make that guy the highest paid player in team history based off that performance.
The Baker Boi(s) only hear what they want to hear. I’ve said if Baker performs like he did in 2024, and can actually win some meaningful games, then you extend him – I have no issues with that. Also, if Baker does his job and the defense lets him down – then yes, that also means you extend him. But if Baker is going out and putting up 122 yards and 145 yards with the playoffs on the line and going to Miami and turning it over 3 times vs a terrible team in a must win game – that’s not a guy I’m giving $55M/year to.
Also, if you’re a Baker Boi, why wouldn’t you want Baker to play out the year since you know he’s the league MVP – if he does that, he’s going to then even be well north of $55M/year.

Poor misunderstood victim Munch. Most on this website know your incessant criticism of Mayfield and think of you as a fool. You hung the entire last half of the season on an injured Mayfield. Moreover you are on record as saying Mayfield faked his injuries. Finally, you are so absurd you claim the defense played well in the last 9 games. They played so well that Licht completely overhauled the defense during the off season.

Funny how every bad game is 100% Baker’s fault, but every good game gets an asterisk. That’s not evaluating a quarterback my guy, it’s protecting a preconceived opinion. Baker didn’t get the offensive staff fired, they fired themselves with middle school level play calling and an offense that completely lost its identity.
The Bucs have every snap, every practice, every meeting on film, and they still offered him an extension. I’ll trust their evaluation over your selective memory every single time.
