Morning Cup Of Joe
July 2nd, 2026
Welcome to your Morning Cup of Joe, an eye-opener to help Joe’s readers ease into their busy workday with a few football links, wacky news and a pleasant distraction.

Now this is journalism: It’s very uncomfortable, especially the timing. It seems ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller may have a shady past. He recently lost an arm in a horrible car accident. Missouri authorities claim the Joplin native crossed a center line and hit a semi-tractor trailer head-on. His family set up a GoFundMe account asking for $10,000. Wait, does he not have insurance with Disney? And why can’t a company like Disney, worth some $170 billion, help out one of its rising stars and high-profile talent? Fishy. The GoFundMe money was raised quickly and so did the goal as a result, up to $55,000. Then, word came out: Miller has a shadowy history. Enough that Awful Announcing went into a deep dive on the matter that raised many ethical, if not legal, questions. Miller allegedly owed many people for fantasy football winnings never paid and sign-up fees for defunct leagues never refunded. Once funds started flowing into the GoFundMe account, some of the victims suddenly got paid. 🤔 First and foremost, Miller is going through a horrible, life-altering period in his life. Joe wouldn’t wish that on any enemy. And Joe has been harsh on Awful Announcing in the past for some really juvenile stories. But Joe has to give them props for bringing these Miller issues to light at a terrible time. (Joe has a Miller encounter of his own that Joe has often shared on this site but never cited the name of the person in question. Regular, long-time readers may be able to connect the dots but Joe smelled something rotten from his first and only chat with Miller years ago, who otherwise seemed like a pleasant guy despite what he told Joe one frigid day in Indianapolis at the combine.) Where are all these self-proclaimed defenders of democracy and why aren’t they doing gumshoe investigations on this like Awful Announcing did? It took a website from a bunch of stringers to expose this? Where is Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, The Athletic or even USA Today? Joe suspects those outlets didn’t want to deal with the unwashed and write about — eeeewwww, fantasy football people. #Crickets You know: “So what if that ilk got (allegedly) bilked by one of our fraternity brothers? They deserved it. Hicks. Anyone paying to play make-believe deserves what they get. They probably play video games and subscribe to recruiting websites, too! (Gasp!) What cities are you visiting in Europe this summer? Ah, the culture! (Sigh)” [Awful Announcing]

With the Tampa Bay Rays officially halfway through the year, I analyze a few reasons for their success & expectations moving forward.
For a group that wasn't predicted to do much in the preseason, it would now feel like a disappointment if they didn't play in October. #RaysUp pic.twitter.com/0qhXqdWaT1
