Bucs Can Still Learn From Lavonte David Like The Texans Do

Father Time may have tackled Lavonte David from behind, but David can still impact Bucs linebackers.
He’s doing that for the Texans, per Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans.
Joe talked about David with Ryans this spring in Phoenix at the swanky Biltmore resort. Ryans, a former Pro Bowl linebacker himself, uses teaching film with his players and David is a featured player.
“I just see how he plays the game, watching him from [the] tape, this guy’s consistent as ever,” Ryans said. “I mean, he’s always around the football, always attacking the football. I don’t know how many turnovers he’s had in his career, but I can just think back to the highlights of what I’m showing my guys on how to get the ball out. There’s a lot of Lavonte David clips on that tape of him punching the football out, making incredible interceptions, so I’m just [happy] he was able to go out the right way, honored in the right way there with Tampa Bay. He did a lot of great things for them, an outstanding linebacker got a lot of young players definitely looking up to.”
That struck Joe. Ryans knows linebacker play intimately after 20 years in the NFL playing and coaching, and there is David playing a role in Ryans teaching his Texans defense — a defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season.
Ryans doesn’t know David personally but wishes he did.
“It seems like in today’s football, you don’t get a guy who’s stayed at one place as long as Lavonte has, so that in itself just tells you the type of guy that Lavonte is,” Ryans said. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about Lavonte, the leader that he is, and how he goes out and he shows the young guys how it should be done every single day — a guy I would have loved to work with.”

Hall was misplaced on this team—he SHOULD have been a DE on a 4-3 defense. They tried to grow him into a tackle

I don’t understand why most coaches don’t try to change with the team times?I guess it’s just like life the older we get the more stubborn we get. No matter what his assistant coaches tell the Head coach the Head coach is going to Ignore the advice and keep doing it his way even though it doesn’t work and even if it causes the end of his career.. Lovey Smith was the hat way with the famous Tampa 2 defensive that everybody finally figured out.. the mark of a good coach is not to keep running the same thing that doesn’t work but to run something that works well with what you have to work with..So unless you’re he Head Coach change to that Formula I just don’t see him being the Head Coach at Tampa much longer.. That will be his downfall Stubbornness😞

Tampa added a good offensive coordinator, they add a great special team coach and they had a young and good quarterback coach plus they’ve signed some good players and drafted some good players. There’s no reason why this team shouldn’t do well this year with all that addition none whatsoever…

I know! If im the glazers I’d fire myself! Keep Evans! Replace Bowles with 328 as HC and add Lynch mob for DC..Replace Mayfield with Kirk Cousins cause he can convert 3rd and 28 Hire Tom Brady as OC,cause he’s the best t buc ever! Then I could wine about something else! AHHH! Life’s Good!

I would argue that Lavonte going out the right would have been playing his last season beside Jihaad Campbell or Carson Schwesinger as a mentor for his successor.

Yesterday, you posted “Unlocking Second-Down Mystery May Get The Bucs An NFC South Title” with a chart that showed that the Bucs were 23rd in passing rate on first down, 9th on second down, and 8th on third down.
If a Joe is an opposing DC, can you figure out which down to stack the box and which two downs to either go nickel while you rush four or stack the box and blitz? Down the stretch, every DC the Bucs faced had figured it out.

Just because DeMeco turned out to be a great teacher, coach, and leader doesn’t mean Lavonte will be. Frankly – on his little interview tour, I found myself wanting him to talk less. Is he an all time great? Yes. But the self admitted loafer last year had a chance to galvanize the team last year. This, so-called veteran leadership on our team – where were they when the bottom fell out? Where was lavonte, where was Winfield, where was Evans, Vita etc? Our veteran presence, “leadership” is grossly overrated. The lockerroom and the leading voices in it clearly got stale.

LynchMob for DC has a certain ring to it! Probably wouldn’t be too hard to do better than 32nd ranked red zone defense. I mean, if I were a guru of defense and my team was that awful, I should probably be fired immediately.
Replacing Mayfield with Cousins is ridiculous though. Everyone knows he’s only good versus the wide open > soft as butter > pee wee league caliber > Swiss cheese on a hot Tampa Sunday > putrid pass defensive scheme employed by Toad Bowles.

Even an almost-retired David was light years better than most of the other people playing defense for the Bucs last year. If that was a “bad year”, it’s one many/most NFL linebackers can only dream of having. As graded by other NFL players, David still was still ranked in the top 100 of ALL NFL players in 2025.
Kudos to you LaVonte. You will be missed as a player, a leader and a man.
