Baker Mayfield Said Holding Out Was Not An Option The Way 2025 Unfolded

Baker Mayfield plays with heart like few other quarterbacks. But Mayfield didn’t have the heart to eff over his teammates.
That’s the reason Mayfield gave ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. After practice today, and after Mayfield got a lot off his chest about his contract hassle, Fowler had a one-on-one with Mayfield.
Fowler asked Mayfield given how much leverage a starting quarterback has over a team if he holds out, if he ever thought about that option to get a deal done.
“No, I have a bad taste in my mouth from last year,” Mayfield said. “And I know the potential that this group has.
“Still, for me, the most important thing is winning and making sure I am a team-first guy. I wanted our guys to know that. I am dead-serious about it.”
Mayfield then explained he didn’t want to hang his teammates out to dry and perhaps Pearl Harbor the Bucs’ 2026 season by invoking Operation Shutdown.
“I never considered a hold-out or a hold-in,” Mayfield said. “I want to win ballgames. I want to play with these guys. It is a special group and that’s why it feels like home.”
Is there any wonder why Mayfield’s teammates respect him so much? And at least from a football perspective, this was a brilliant move by Mayfield.
Think about it: Mayfield is potentially sacrificing millions by reinforcing his loyalty to his teammates. One thing players respect is cash. And Joe is confident dedicating himself to his craft and his teammates for a few million dollars has the Bucs’ locker room’s attention.

Begs the obvious question… what QB are you going to get if it’s not Baker? There’s more leverage there than you think. The first franchise tag gives him what he’s asking for ($50 million). The second elevates him to near what Mahomes makes. Seems like he’s got more cards than you think he does. The worst case scenario gives him exactly wat he’s asking for, and you know it’s not going to end at his worst case scenario. Negotiations things never do.

I really don’t get the bucs logic here.
Baker’s reported to have asked for about 53 million 3 year contract.
When they don’t sign him and tag him next year he’ll earn 50 million, and if they tag him a second year it’ll closer to 60.
Are they really arguing over like 2 million or so a year?
Making a point and showing every other player on the team, your a cog and you don’t matter.
Pretty obvious they don’t really care about winning this year or soon.
There are plenty of teams that will pay maker next year. For Example Rodgers is 100 % not playing next year.

The Bucs have no leverage after this season with Mayfield.
If they franchise tag Mayfield, his salary cap hit for 2027 balloons to $80M counting dead cap charges owing to a +$30M hit from the void year on his current deal.
Instead, they’ve staked their immediate future on the notion that somehow they’re justified in *NOT* paying him. It’s a no-win decision by Jason Licht since Mayfield having a great season effectively prices him far above whatever his demands might have been this year.

I do believe Baker when he says “it’s not ALL about the money”. It’s about the money, but not all about it with him.
With Big Girl Jr./Vita, it’s become clear with him at this point that it’s really ALL about the money. Money A, Money B and Money C

I wonder if its more House Glazer holding up the check book. Bowles is on a 1 year prove it or lose it year. You have Mike Tomlin waiting in the wings, he very well might want Baker or maybe not??? I wonder if they want to leave this all up to 2026 results. We go deep in the playoffs, everyone gets paid, if not, the team is loaded with youth and talent for going forward.

The Bucs obviously didn’t want to make any real commitment to Baker with only two years combined with below-market money. He’s going to be thinking about that all season long.

The QB situation a little bit more dire than NT and Vita situation. A team goes no where without a QB and we seen Baker play at an elite level the first half of the season and then not look good at the end of the season when injuries started stacking up. They are playing a risky game by not extending him. My guess is if he has a good season then the Bucs will have to pay him even more and if he feels that disrespected he might walk completely. No one thought Evans would leave and look how that worked out.

Vita is a tough situation with his age and demands.
I wonder if Mike walking was a huge eye opener for Licht and the Glazers. That one domino made them re-evaluate the entire thing. Bowles, Baker, future years.
I would hate to start a full rebuild. Too many talented young players. Will waste a terrific OL and WR room. Good young D players from the last few drafts. Bowles is wasting it all anyway but at least with Baker and Vita there was a fighting chance.

IMHO, Jason Licht on orders from England…low balled Mayfield. Damn, I hope Baker has a great year. The defense will suck per usual. Mayfield will put up crazy numbers but we will go 7-10. Everyone is fired including that fraud Jason Licht. The new coach and GM will franchise him and we can get onto to real football.

Since when are you some kind of hero for honoring a contract you actually signed? Three means three years, not two! And that goes for Vita too!
When the beggar approaches and you refuse him money, and he comes back with, “At least I’m not out there stealing,” he too wants to be rewarded for doing the right, only in this case by not breaking the law.
People who holdout during the last year of their contract are essentially saying their signature is worthless, which makes them worthless too.
Yes, Baker chose to honor his last contract year, but it should not have been given a second thought.

Of all the things I despise in sports self-inflicted insanity is the worst. There’s no reason to believe Baker can’t play 3-5 more years if he wants to. And we would be lucky to have him for that long. Maybe by then the retooling of the defense would be complete and we have a couple Super Bowls. Hiring Tomlin is insane. Low-balling Baker is insane. Not at least making Vea happy for this year (if he would accept it) is insane. Baker is by far the most important asset to this team and keeping him happy is crucial to success. FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THAT AND DO IT RIGHT NOW. If we lose Baker because we are dumb, I will be intensely disappointed.

Drake Mayes don’t grow on trees. Drafting a QB high is a 35% crapshoot. Most teams including us crap out repeatedly. Every time. The line will be out the door and around the corner to sign Baker if we don’t. And a bidding war would be a hugely avoidable mistake. He’s going to have a great season if the offensive line plays. There’s 0 doubt in my mind about that. The longer the contract at 53 million, the more reasonable and then eventually cheap it becomes. Sign him for 5 years with 3-4 guaranteed. He still has many great years ahead of him.

You (and Bee), the Baker haters, seem to have forgotten your history lesson. The history lesson is his first contract year with the Bucs he made 4 million plus incentives. His current contract is for 100 million for three years. If you average that he has been playing for less than almost any other quarterback in the league
His leverage is better than you think. If they try to franchise tag him he can not sign it. The Bucs will have to trade for a back up from another team (good luck with that) or hope to draft a quarterback in the middle of the first round (good luck with that).
You Baker haters want to blame every loss on him. Last year the injuries and the really bad defense lost most of the games. Have you forgotten 3rd down and 28?

If fans don’t think a starting QB threatening to hold out has leverage… they haven’t been watching the NFL for very long.
I agree with “this Joe” – it’s another reason the Bucs missed an opportunity to save some money while supporting their franchise QB. He’s a leader and he’s demonstrating how to move forward in a difficult situation. Vita tried a different route, and unless he decides to hold out – costing him a LOT of money – he and Baker are at the same point. The organization is playing hard ball with stars, and future stars, and key contributors, alike. It’s a strategy for a reason.
It seems there is deliberate way they are going about this season, and it feels different.
Maybe someone in sports media could ask about that?

A final note on quarterbacks and their value to a team. First, consider the Seahawks who just won a Superbowl with Sam Darnold as their quarterback. Good old Sam was never any good anywhere (played second string to Baker at the Panthers) and was picked up as a backup to Geno Smith. The rest is history.
Now consider the great Tom Brady. His last season for Tampa Bay he was 8-9 in the regular season and lost to the Cowboys 31-14. What a bum. He is trash. Right? Wasn’t good enough to win a wild card game! Or, maybe it’s coaching, defense, offensive and defensive line, etc.

Teams are just NOT very interested in guaranteeing tip-top of the market $$ to 32-YEAR OLD (‘beaten up and banged up’ & undersized to boot) Quarterbacks, LONGTERM. It is just the REALITY. And, I don’t blame them. They don’t call-it a “CLIFF” for nothing. Baker is NOT a young 31 either, and he will NOT age well. NOBODY knows 💯 for certain, that HE is not already on the decline. He’s definitely NOT on the ‘upside’ of his career, that is FOR SURE. Teams are MUCH MORE comfortable paying-out THAT type of $$$$, on a young Quarterback, who has not yet reached HIS potential. It’s about UPSIDE, when you’re talking “LONGTERM.” Players do NOT get healthier, bigger, stronger, faster, OR BETTER when they are on the ‘other side’ of 30. It just is what it is. The Bucs are only being SMART about this. They KNOW that paying-out $80-MIL+ (longterm, too) to BAKER & VEA, is NOT going to make THEM a better team. Total BS. You want to pick one bad play and blame it on the loss. They were ahead by 14 points. They couldn’t run the bad with the injury depleted O-Line and Baker was running for his life most of the game. Even with the bad INT it was 3rd and 28 and they had the lead.

This snub is great for Baker and fans for one season. Bakes plays with a huge chip on his shoulder and proves everyone wrong. He has a Rams OC again. He wins the Super bowl than tells the Bucks to Flick off and replaces A retiring Stafford for 80 m per year. Go Rams. I lived in LA 13 years when they had no NFL.

Not signing Baker is an admission from the front office that we expect be in full rebuild mode next year. Probably going to be a rough 27′. With Baker this is a team with playoff aspirations. Without Baker this team is in full rebuild. With Bowles on a 1yr contract and no contract for the starting QB. That pretty much signals Bowles is gone and we are in a full blown rebuild. Which is sad because we have a good core, oline is good, WR’S are good, running backs are good. Dline looks to be improving. Losing Vea next year would suck. But not as bad as going into full rebuild. Expect a new coach and tank 27′

It’s just VERY simple to comprehend AND SEE HERE. The FO finally, recognizes that THIS TEAM as it is currently constructed… Is. Just. NOT. GOOD ENOUGH. And, paying-out over $80-MILLION PER YEAR to both “Baker & Vea” LONGTERM, over the next 3-4 YEARS (and having to pay for it, while affecting our cap for the next 5+)… Will absolutely NOT make this team any BETTER than it already is. Players do NOT improve past the age of 30. They do NOT get faster, stronger, bigger, better, OR healthier. So, if they’re NOT “GOOD ENOUGH” NOW… Then, they definitely WON’T BE after ‘shelling-out’ $80+MILLION MORE, over the next few years. Because, then there would be absolutely NO-WAY POSSIBLE, to even get any better. You are 💯 entirely, CASH STRAPPED and DONE. And, THIS TEAM (who is NOT good enough), is “THE TEAM” that you’re rollin’ with for the next several seasons. I know it’s NOT “the team” I want to ROLL WITH. I thought Bakers press conference today was in poor taste and unprofessional. Currently according to ESPN he’s the 16th highest paid QB in the league at 33 million which to me seems about right. 16th is dead center middle of the road and in my mind that’s exactly where he is he’s tough as nails, tries hard, but results matter. In no way or fashion is he in the upper echelon of NFL QB’s.
I side with the front office in a wait and see. If he balls out, he will get a huge payday. 33 million is nothing to scoff at.

In the process, he lifted the weight from himself and transferred it to the Glazers and Licht. There’s been a wide range of speculation around his contract and I’m betting that it’s gotten to be a distraction from his goal to excel in performance with his team this year.

Mayfield is going to play his ass off this year to prove he’s worthy of 50million plus contract. As I said, he’s a good QB and paid according to where he’s currently at. He is far is a game changing QB, he’s proven to be adequate, decent at best. He’s not a franchise changing QB, he obviously seems to think he is better then he actually is. Not to mention he’s on the back end of 30 years old, his playing style will not be the same as he ages.

Mayfield plays his ass off every year. It’s all about team. Have the Bucs had a total team that was deep-playoff capable in the past three years?
Some of the posters here blame him for us not making the playoffs last year. I was happy for the players when we didn’t make the playoffs because given our then-current condition, the team would’ve been further emasculated in the divisional match. If you want to look at Mayfield’s entire career, when did he play for a playoff-quality team? Well, he and Cleveland were making great progress until he got hurt with the type of injuries that they should’ve kept him out for. So he gets the surgery he needs, prognosis back-to-normal, and it’s off to Carolina, with finally a brief stint with the still-recouping Rams. Were these teams even playoffs-capable?
Mayfield stays in shape and has no long-term injury concerns. He’s going to be age 32-36 in his next contract years — still very much in quarterback-prime end-range.

This is the proof that the rest of the NFL does not look at Baker as a franchise quarterback. All those GM’s talk to one another don’t be fooled by they’re on different teams. They are a fraternity so they talk about these players. If Jason Licht had any of those guys saying Baker is a franchise quarterback Jason Licht would have been signed him. But he knows that no other team looks at him as a franchise quarterback so that’s why he’s not signed right now the bucs knows things Baker doesn’t know.

I had said he’s a good adequate quarterback. He plays his worst when the big lights are on. Brad Johnson won a Super Bowl here, he was a good adequate QB. Brad Johnson will go down in Super Bowl history as a Super Bowl winning QB. Brad Johnson was very fortunate to be the QB on a team that arguably had a top five defense in the history of the NFL.
That will be exactly what Mayfield will need. He’s not a Tom Brady kinda guy who performs his best when the big game is on the line.

Yes, Baker is under contract for this year….And is under paid per the current market for QB1’s in the league…Yes, he would like a new deal that pays him appropriately (>$50M/yr for 3-4yrs) & puts him in the new baseline for top 10-12 NFL QB’s pay.
But his statements were a great example of why the VAST majority of Bucs players, fans and those inside the organization love the guy. He is a natural born leader! He is not a prima donna. He’s a guy that carries himself with a blue-collar work ethic & leads by example.
I am not say it was premeditated, but his words could easily have been a direct dig at Vea. Who is acting like a total “me-1st” guy with his “hold-in” – as he perceives himself to be under paid…Which he may be, but as 31yr old DT that has shown himself to be lack luster 50% of the plays he’s on the field while carrying a $18M cap number ($17M in cash due in 2026)….It’s not like Vea is hurting for money…(He’s in the $75M range of career earns with 2026 included).
Vea does not have the leverage that Baker could wield if he wanted to. Yes, he is important to the Bucs D but an aging DT/NG is also easier to replace or cover-up a weakness with a lesser player than a good to abv avg QB1.
It’s just a fact of life that a QB1 holds much more sway than the NG1.
No one says Vea went 2-7 after the bye weak and holds the keys to the Bucs collapse in 2025…But many on here sure seem content in pointing a finger at Baker – when a ton blame lay at the feet of Todd Bowles DEF – who’s side of the ball played like trash in 2025.

Captahab. Baker is exactly the kind of guy who performs his best when the game is on the line. Baker has the best passer rating in NFL playoff history. Brady, when he was here using the Bucs as his personal brothel, chucked 3! interceptions in one half of the NFC championship game in 2020 and Todd Bowles defense saved his a$$. Baker has thrown 3 interceptions in his 5 game playoff career.
Aren’t you the same guy saying Baker was fortunate being paid like the 16th best QB. When he’s statistically at the top of all meaningful QB ranks in his Tampa career?
