Baker Mayfield Says Bucs Will “Dictate” Through Receivers

Will the high-flying Buccaneers offense return after a one-year hiatus?
Joe would label that is “somewhat likely” as the afternoon heats up One Buc Palace in mid-June.
The offensive line is healthy, so is the quarterback and running backs and a talented group of receivers not named Mike Evans.
Baker Mayfield talked to media today at One Buc Palace following Day 1 of mandatory minicamp. He seems to feel the Bucs offense will be able to impose its will through the air.
“We’ll be able to kind of dictate based on personnel and [our receivers] moving around and really seeing defenses and how they’re going to try and cover us, attack us,” Mayfield said. “It’s a great luxury to have.
“I think Chris [Godwin] looks really, really good right now. I was training with him the whole offseason and [Jalen McMillan,] as well. Those guys busted their tails. Chris looks like he’s back into his pure form.”
Joe is excited about Godwin, maybe even as much as Mayfield.
At 30-years-old, Godwin should be in his prime and he’s sort of in a contract year with no cash guaranteed in his Bucs contract for the 2027 season.
At 30, Evans had 79 catches for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns. Yea, Godwin is not Evans, but he is capable of making a lot of fans forget about Evans for at least one season.

This WR core and the skill players overall especially with the addition of Gainwell are going to be part of a Top 10 Offense. The biggest concern will be the health of the O-Line which relates directly to Baker’s comfort level of course. The real exciting part of the Offense is this OC knows what he is doing. LFG!!

Godwin looked REALLY good in limited opportunities once he got back. Barring injury, he’ll be a difference maker this year.

If their is a positive thing from ME leaving and the way he left, it is Godwin coming out of ME shadow. Yes, I think we all hope Godwin is back to himself. I am truly happy for him because he has truly overcome. I mentioned before I would like yo see him placed on the billboard at the stadium. He is in my opinion now MR Buc!!. I hope he nails it this year for him. Yes we will all benefit from his performance. .
Talk about passion the D players need to look at this guy and so do the fans.

If their is anything positive in ME leaving and the way he left, it is Godwin can now emerge from ME shadow. I think they need to put his pic on the billboard at the stadium. He is now MR Buc. No one is more dedicated and worked harder to get back into form than him. Talk about passion!!, the D players need to watch this guy and yes so do the fans. I hope he has a breakout season and cashes in

If Godwin is used in the slot, like 2024, and can stay healthy, he’s going to have a huge year. For fantasy, I’ll be picking up Godwin on the cheap as everyone rushes to get e2. Also, McMillan isn’t a bad last round flyer – he looked so good to end last year, and if Godwin or e2 got hurt …or, who knows, maybe he just flat out ends up taking one of their jobs. He looked that good to end last year, if he can keep it up, that’s a possibility.

Or you can just watch 2021 tape of Godwin getting spammed passes from Tom Brady himself. Chris had like 90+ catches and 1,110yards in like 13-14 games before getting hurt. Was playing at a level high enough that he still got voted to the Pro Bowl afterward.

Brady wasn’t talking about talent – Evans is on a level all by himself. But the offense did run through Godwin since Brady never had an issue taking what defenses would give him, and Godwin played in the slot and knows how to get open underneath, who to pick out holes in defenses, or how to rub coverage in man. It’s why if Godwin can stay healthy, he could statistically have one of the best seasons in Bucs history at WR.
Well, assuming Baker can throw for more than 122 yards a game. But if Baker is “healthy” and the offense is moving, Godwin could return to form like in 2024 when he lead the NFL in receiving for the first quarter of the season before he got hurt.

Appreciate the encouragement for more emphasis about Mike Evans, greatest offensive player in Buc history and a great human. Four years of watching Twocoach do two jobs poorly as the team regressed and failed to win big games became too much for him to take. Same for most real fans.
So rather than do the right thing, Jason let Twocoach throw everyone else under the bus instead of holding the right person accountable.
Mike is gone but, always remember and never forget, why Mike left. He should still be a Buc under a head coach with a modern, full-time defensive coordinator.
But no. Now all fans will suffer. This goes down as the greatest Bucs blunder since Doug Williams left in 1983. Disgraceful.

Think the passing game offense is going to be less predictable & more versatile. Also think the new running game concept/scheme additions Zac is making that players are alluding to this off-season will do the same. At least I hope so.
Baker also said in his PC how Anzalone already has enough of a grasp of the defense and his defensive teammates on the same page enough to be able to make dummy calls and play that kind of chess match. That’s welcome news to hear at this point in June!
Bring in the newfound juice of both players and coaches and this should be heckuva lot more fun than last season.
And please let our starting offense line have (way) more than one snap together this upcoming season. That would be a big boost in a myriad of different ways.

He also said we can’t throw it 50 times a game. . He believes the running game under Zac will be back to where it was under Coen. Key to the season will come down to the O line staying healthy. Hard to be good on offense when you’re starting O line never plays a snap together all season.

Mike is a HOF’er for sure. But if you factor in the the lack of games Chris has been out, he is just as good. People act like Chris has spent his whole career in Mikes’ shadow, but the numbers don’t support that at all. From 2017 through 2025, they’ve basically been a WR1A/WR1B duo, not a hierarchy.
Over those nine seasons, Godwin has 612 receptions to Evans’ 628 — almost identical volume, and Godwin did it while playing 10 fewer games. That alone shows he’s not some secondary option. When he’s on the field, the ball finds him just as often.
First downs tell the same story. Evans has 476 first downs in that span, Godwin has 395. That’s extremely close considering Evans gets more deep shots and red‑zone targets. Godwin is the chain‑mover, the guy who keeps drives alive, and the one the offense leans on in the middle of the field.
There are multiple seasons where Godwin outperformed Evans outright. In 2019 he led the team with 1,333 yards. In 2021 and 2022 he led the team in receptions with 98 and 104. Even in 2023 he was right there with 83 catches. When the Bucs needed volume and reliability, Godwin was the focal point.
The difference between them isn’t “Evans is the star and Godwin is in the shadows.” It’s that they play different roles. Evans is the vertical X receiver and red‑zone monster. Godwin is the slot/outside hybrid who blocks, takes the tough catches, converts third downs, and creates yards after the catch. One stretches the defense, the other punishes it underneath. Both are essential.
The truth is simple: Evans is the touchdown machine, but Godwin is the engine. The Bucs’ passing attack for almost a decade has been built on both of them. Godwin hasn’t been in Evans’ shadow — he’s been his counterpart.
