Another Dart Thrown At The Bucs’ 2025 Defense By Baker Mayfield
June 16th, 2026
Bucs players know the defense was sour last season, hard to watch, uglier than Carl Nicks’ big toe.
Baker Mayfield made a direct comment about the softness of the defense last season today after minicamp practice. He also made what some might call a throwaway one-liner, but it was very tellling.
The response came at the tail end of a response to a question from The Sage of Tampa Bay Sports, Ira Kaufman, who simply asked Mayfield if he tried to do too much at times in 2025.
Mayfield talked about forcing throws too often but he noted that pulling the trigger in the flow of a game is who he is and that will continue. And then he dropped a gem.
“I feel confident about where our defense is at. Instead of trying to, you know, have to put up 30 points each game, I feel confident that we’re going to have a really good team,” Mayfield said.
Joe found that to be telling insight into Mayfield’s mind. Was he entering games last season thinking Tampa Bay needed to hang 30 on opponents because its defense was sad? That’s a bad thing for a QB.
In reality, the Bucs allowed 28 or more points in six games last year. They went 1-5, but Joe will hang two of those losses on Bucs special teams — home against Philly and at Buffalo.
The Eagles blocked a punt and scored a TD on the play in a six-point victory; Buffalo benefited from one of the worst overall Tampa Bay special teams performances in modern times in a one-score game.

Good thing Jason retained the defensive coordinator.
Oh, wait….
June 16th, 2026 at 4:09 pm
Meanwhile the Baker lead offense only scored 30 or more points 3 times all year, and with the playoffs on the line, Baker was throwing for 122 yards, 145 yards, with huge 4th quarter INTs…
With that said, I do agree the defense needs to be better – and can easily be better by just not playing that awful Todd Bowles super soft zone.
But again, the idea that anyone but Baker cost this team the playoffs, with how he played with everything on the line, is fake news. 0-4 in the key stretch and Baker was terrible, missing easy throws and committing huge turnovers when they mattered most.
June 16th, 2026 at 4:09 pm
I perceived it the exact same way. That line didn’t just stand out, it Jumped out on first listen!
That just can’t be a good feeling when you’re on the sidelines and you see your stalwart and Team captain Lavonte David (he admitted it himself) loafing on certain plays. Among the others who did the same.
I’m thinking I gotta score on every possession to have a chance, not just play good football or a winning brand of football. Then when you don’t score and that’s gonna happen, it takes it out of you.
Then when you factor in Baker going all out and being willing to run over a defender and put his body on the line for the team and yet they are loafing and/or avoiding contact on the other side, etc.
Loafing & being allergic to tackling properly is a recipe for disaster. And not just for the side of the ball that is on the field.
I don’t blame Baker here. Even tho he shoulders some of the blame for what happened last season too – especially post Bye week.
June 16th, 2026 at 4:11 pm
Ooohhh. He made a criticism! Wow.
BFD. And it was accurate.
If any of the remaining guys are upset, do something. But they won’t. Why? Zyon is bored. Kancey is hurt. SVD got lost. Braswell is missing.

He hung the defense out to dry plenty of games during that 2-7 stretch.
The offense averaged 20.33 points per game while their opponents averaged 25.89 points per game during thw final nine games.
Total Bucs: 183 points
Total opponents: 233 points
-5 point differential
Barely getting 20 ppg isn’t cutting it. Has he talked about what he’s going to improve about himself?

Yes, he is being Honest. That Putrid Pass Defense of recent past has given us all the shakes at nite. All this new personnel and with no soft limping Dean and washed-up LVD will be part of it. We can only get better on Defense. All Faith in Bain. Go BUCS!!
June 16th, 2026 at 4:15 pm
What did the old Bucs coach say?
“We played bad defense but to make up for it we played bad offensively as well.”
Something like that. Anyway, thats the Bucs.

If any games gives you shakes at nite ,its time for a Xanax UGH!
June 16th, 2026 at 4:31 pm
THANK YOU! Special teams and defense explains all of why we missed the playoffs, and that’s before we count a single injury. That same core with a revamped D and TEAMS, AND OC, is a contender.

Thats the Bucs. Led by someone who takes zero accountability for his mistakes and poor play. The offense averaged 20.3 ppg during the last 9 games vs opponents 25 ppg. If its a struggle to get to 20 pts, you won’t win important games.

Can the season start already so that hopefully 3.28 and Munch can move on!?
The idea that Baker blew the season by himself isn’t a thing. No one except Rod thinks that. Team game, one that relies heavily on the coaching staff.
2025 went down the tubes because of Baker poor play, Bowles poor leadership, horrendous defense, injured OL, terrible special teams… the list probably goes on.
June 16th, 2026 at 4:52 pm
Cut this guy… eff resigning him
Not a leader but a blamer
Just like Bowles
Get rid of both
June 16th, 2026 at 5:06 pm
Baker is great at throwing darts at the defense. Especially the opposing defense on Sunday.
Crybaby wants more money after going 2-7 down the stretch.
That’s like crashing your car while driving drunk then telling your dad to buy you a new more expensive SUV.
Laughable at best.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:08 pm
“I’m thinking I gotta score on every possession to have a chance, not just play good football or a winning brand of football. Then when you don’t score and that’s gonna happen, it takes it out of you.“
This is what separates the good from the great.
Not only that, but when you finish with the 6th highest punt rate, 8th most FGs attempted and 18th in TDs you should have the mindset or at least be able to sell operating at peak scoring efficiency.
Not when it takes you 9 tries on 3 combined drives to score from 5 yards off the goal line.
Not when you double your turnover rate after the bye week
And especially not being able to score >10 points against a defense with a bunch of back ups in the secondary throwing the ball 50 times.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:09 pm
” uglier than Carl Nicks’ big toe.” Hahahahaha!! Classic – keep ’em coming Jose!
June 16th, 2026 at 5:13 pm
CleanHouse
I get your point , but you know, if he wants to tell everyone the Defense Sucks out loud let him.
Kit Kat won’t and someone should.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:20 pm
Anyone watch Mike Evans on the sideline last year watching the Defense do their best Paper Mache impression game after game.
Mike, like the rest of us had to watch a Defense that was not even competitive week after week, plain and simple.
He could not stomach it anymore and bolted.
Yeah Rod, Baker has his own issues for sure, but that does not change the fact the Defense just was not anywhere near what is needed to win consistently.
With Zac Robinson, the offense will look more like a Liam Coen run offense than the Grizzard spit and sputter mess last year.
Go Bucs!!!
June 16th, 2026 at 5:20 pm
Cut Baker yea right. Lol. Replace him with who? He may not be the best QB in the league but he is Far from the worst. You can pitch and moan all you want but he is here this year for sure. I think he will be here longer.

BM6 said what I was thinking every game during my the later half of the season last year… Gotta put up 30 points to win.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:34 pm
In games 9,10, 11 our season was basically over. Then Bredeson went down and it was over. Those 3 games were the worst defensive and special teams I’ve ever witnessed in the NFL. EVER. That’s when Mayfield shook up the entire organization and basically said we haven’t got a chance. Mayfield knew like anybody who knows anything about football- we weren’t a playoff team. He was perturbed, and that’s on him. But what he cost us by not making the playoffs was a ton of embarrassment.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:38 pm
Ohh gawd, Carl Nciks big toe. A FA player the idiot GM Mark Dominick signed because the Saints knew about his toe but the Bucs staff neglected. I also thought Baker would have to score on almost every possession due to the Bucs putrid defense
June 16th, 2026 at 5:40 pm
Last I looked it was a team sport! Beer is good….
June 16th, 2026 at 5:41 pm
Baker is starting to feel himself too much. Again, just like he did in criticizing the organization about his contract offer. Now he’s criticizing his defensive teammates publicly. This is the same kind of action that alienated him from some of his teammates in Cleveland. He was flapping his jaws about other players’ contract situation when they were holding out. Saying they need to get into camp.
There’s a moxie Baker and then there’s a self serving Baker. The latter of which was so selfish that he rather make the team lose with his horrible play than sit out a couple of weeks and heal.
Mark my words, we are witnessing the beginning of a Baker meltdown. His immaturity of the past is resurfacing.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:47 pm
He is not a leader. No mention of how he’s improving his game or helping to make the team better. Sad.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:54 pm
smart buc fans knew what baker was saying last year. bloggers didnt and were too happy to tout offense and the offensive rookie of the year, yada yada garbage thinking the performance against the seahawks was going to be par.
June 16th, 2026 at 5:56 pm
ATLBuc. Baker does have a habit of making his teammates accountable. Some can handle it, some can’t. I’m thinking we got rid of most of the riff raff. Keep Coach Bowles a mile away from our offensive game planning like happened those last 5 or 6 games. Put himself and his brain trust in charge of a defense that was last in the league in the red zone. A defense against New England gave up 4 TDS of over 65 yards. A defense that gave the Rams ZERO Effort. Josh Allen 6! Touchdown’s. And I didn’t mention 3rd and 28.
June 16th, 2026 at 6:09 pm
In 2025’s final 4 games, Mayfield was sacked 12 or 13 times and had 6 TD’s and 6 Interceptions
The OLine was not playing well, Grizzard was clueless and Mayfield himself admits his fundamentals were off.
The Defense has been upgraded significantly and so has the Special Teams.
Hope for a Healthy Season
June 16th, 2026 at 6:28 pm
I don’t find anything wrong with what he said. The defense was pathetic and was missing one integral player, Kancey. He missed almost the whole season. He played in the last game I think. Compared to the offense, who were missing players off and on all year across the all position groups. The defense was solely responsible for one victory, against the Saints in the first meeting. The battered offense was the sole reason for the rest of the wins.
June 16th, 2026 at 6:29 pm
How many times did we get a decent play on first down last year , w a penalty and instead of being 2nd and 5 , we were 1st and 18 or 15 or 20,,, how many times did we run for no gain,, 2nd and 10,,, so yes the D was ultra terrible ,, the Special teams were worse than the D ,, but whoever was playing on the O line (hurt or not ) gave us no shot at winning. So to be clear, D stunk, Special Teams were the worst , O Line was terrible , hurt but terrible ,,, we had no running game and the guy calling the plays had no idea what he was doing ! Beyond that we were great! The kicker was great anyway ,,, So the question is , How did we beat Houston, Seattle and SF with this sideshow!
June 16th, 2026 at 6:32 pm
Defense stayed on the field in the second half of the Patriots game we were down 21 -16 with 14 minutes and 30 seconds until the last 2 minutes in the 4th quarter. Where was Baker Mayfield and the offense. All those 3 and outs between that time where was the offense? Against the eagles he threw a pick in the red zone and lost that game after a int by 23 !! The Saints game he was bad and the dolphins game that would have also put us in the playoffs oh I know what about the Panthers game he threw a pick and lost that game. Oh yeah how about the falcons game he threw a pick on that drive that would have closed the game out and not to mention he missed Payne Durham wide open in the middle of the field that would have also closed out the game. And some of y’all want to pay him franchise quarterback money and years. Lol 🤣🤣

Baker’s played on so many crappy teams and for so many crappy coaches and has always received most of the blame from media and a lot of the stupid or ignorant fans for those teams failures and for the most part hasn’t said anything publicly about the shortcomings of others. It’s always best to just keep your mouth shut but I give him a pass for this. I think what he said is pretty benign anyway and understandable.
June 16th, 2026 at 6:45 pm
Munch complains about fake news while he’s always pushing it about Baker.
His apologies are coming.
June 16th, 2026 at 6:54 pm
I want a sharper dart from Baker!
He should say,he won’t re-sign here in Tampa, unless the Bucs hire a NEW DC!!!
Money should not be the issue, however how the team is run should be of the highest priority!

June 16th, 2026 at 7:47 pm
Yes you can fault him for throwing the defense under bus. However, yes it was and is desperately needed!!. Even YaYa acknowledges the team was hard to watch on the field. Then again another reminder what drove ME to San Fran. I hope the defense gets really angry. Then maybe they will tackle, be in position, not get bored and even swarm to the ball. Yes quite a concept.Baker please keep talking trash about that defense
June 16th, 2026 at 7:58 pm
So its fair to conclude that Baker wouldn’t have blamed Grisard as heavily as the remaining leadership has. I guess when the HC/DC cleans out most of his primary coaching assistants and elevates the assistants it points to the same conclusion. Just the DC left from that abysmal defense. if the defense fails again this yr there can’t be any more hiding it behind injuries and coach blaming.
June 16th, 2026 at 8:02 pm
EXCUSE! Gotta say that comment lowered my opinion of Baker as a team guy. Go look in th3 mirror Baker. It is not “needed.” What’s next, he’ll beat another dead horse, Grizzard, all in his quest to break the bank. He’s a punk…injuries, grizzard, the defense, I am what I am….punk
June 16th, 2026 at 8:07 pm
Is not Baker in a round about way saying what ALL of those who post their inter-most feelings on this and other sites that Todd Bowles needs to go? During the 2026 season, perhaps there was more division in the locker room than any player or coach was allowed to discuss in public. Time will reveal the truth!
June 16th, 2026 at 8:08 pm
Munch is dead on re Baker. Play for your pay, prove you’re man enough to save your saviors (Todd and Jason). Excuses his entire career….he is an OC killer. Tds and QBR are not wins. It’s a 10% return on a $20 investment, chump change.
June 16th, 2026 at 8:27 pm
Oc killer? He got Liam the jags gig…
June 16th, 2026 at 8:57 pm
I just watched the entire interview, he threw no one under the bus, especially not on an individual level. He told it like was and he did it in a nice way. He was not a prick. He also took accountability for his play and what he did wrong such as his footwork and alluded to some of the throws he wanted back. Sounded like a very mature leader. He was as articulate as I’ve ever heard him. He continues to grow as a leader. If he can stay relatively healthy , he might get be around a lot longer than some people think.
June 16th, 2026 at 9:07 pm
He was mature and poised and even good natured in that interview. Doesn’t look like the pressure of his contract situation is bothering him. Some of you guys who are howling for him to play out 2026 and earn his extension, even though he already has, were probably hoping he would mess himself from worry. He’s perfectly willing to play it out. I don’t think he’ll have to less he truly wants to!
June 16th, 2026 at 9:14 pm
Wondering how many caught Pat Kirwin today, where he was challenged to say which QBs he would rather have Baker over, assuming a three year contract extension.
Baker was his QB of choice over Jalen Hurts ($51 million/year), Jordan Love ($55 million/year), Brock Purdy ($53 million/year), all other NFC South QBs, Daniel Jones ($44 million/year).
He and co-host Kirk Morrison, a former NFL linebacker for the Raiders, Jaguars and Bills, put Baker somewhere in the #8-12 range of NFL QBs. They said if the Bucs don’t cough up at least $50 million/year, plenty of other teams will jump at the chance and that he would be extremely hard to replace with a rookie – something that would set the team back for years.
A former college offensive coordinator, Kirwin served several roles in the NFL for various teams (the Bucs, for one) including NFL scout, defensive assistant coach and director of player administration, where he negotiated contracts and managed the team’s salary cap.
I’m sure the commenters here at JBF have much more experience and knowledge of what Baker is worth than Kirwin, though.

Scotty. Lol 😆😆 Jalen Hurts a Superbowl MVP Jardan Love has won more games than Baker Mayfield and he only started for 2 years. Brock Purdy played in 2 NFC Championship game Baker Mayfield never played in one of those games. Daniel Jones and Baker Mayfield is about right. But at this point I don’t care what they do it’s NFC Championship or bust for Baker and Bowles.
June 16th, 2026 at 9:32 pm
And the injury excuse ain’t going to work this year if he plays the whole season.
June 16th, 2026 at 9:56 pm
@Oscar, thank you for the overview of the interview. It does change the lens a bit, but the tint is still off some
June 16th, 2026 at 10:06 pm
@Scotty, by your logic we should all heal to the will of Todd Bowles because he has had a longer career in the NFL than Kirwin. Look, I know Kirwin is an entertaining talking box and Joe seems to ingest every word out of Kirwin’s mouth, but let’s be realistic. Take a look at the teams Kirwin worked for, they were pretty bad teams, all of them, throughout his tenure. Just look at the drafts Scout Kirwin contributed to for the bucs. I respect Pat for his accomplishments, but I will not yield my time on an opinion driven blog based on your lame fallacious argument, ….’because Pat said’
June 16th, 2026 at 10:26 pm
Baker is and always has been a loser in the NFL.
Huge character flaw crying like a little girl about a contract extension.
He thinks he deserves a raise after brown staining his shorts in 2025.
2-7 down the stretch and 1-9 in prime time in Tampa.
Easily replaced for a lot cheaper. No soup for you! Next!!!
June 16th, 2026 at 10:31 pm
Baker was saying something good about this year’s defense, that he thinks it’s better than last year’s. That’s not throwing anybody under the bus. Ironically, his critics are always complaining that he isn’t putting up enough points to win games for this team, precisely what Baker said he was worried about last year.
June 16th, 2026 at 10:39 pm
Oneilbuc – LOL. You act like this is a game played by one person and that one person controls whether games are won or lost.
ChiBuc – Yep, you would be one of the experts here that I mentioned that know far more than Kirwin.
The Baker haters all want someone else. Someone they can’t get or a mythical person in the future who is going to somehow drop to the bottom half of the draft.
Jordon Love, incidentally, has never won more than nine games in his career. In fact, he has won exactly nine games all three years with the Packers.
Philly’s defense was slightly better than the Bucs, I think. You know, really good like the one that Brady had with the Bucs and all of his Patriot teams. Sure makes it easier to win when you don’t think you have to press and put up 30 points per game. Oops, I keep making that silly mistake, thinking this is a team game.
This is like trying to talk to someone with an opposing political view. Might as well be talking to a wall. I’m sure you feel the same way. I’ll keep rooting for Baker and the Bucs. You can keep hoping for the mythical future Superman QB who is so great, he doesn’t need the rest of the team.
June 16th, 2026 at 10:55 pm
Is Baker throwing last years defense under the bus or was he referencing Todd Bowles?
June 16th, 2026 at 11:06 pm
Kenton Smith Says:
June 16th, 2026 at 5:56 pm
ATLBuc. Baker does have a habit of making his teammates accountable.
————————————————————————————–
Accountability isn’t achieved through the media by blaming other players. Especially on a team that calls themselves brothers. Especially considering the horrendous performances Baker turned in at the end of the season. He needs to get the tree out of his own eye before he tries to take the splinter out of the eyes of the defense.
I’m all for accountability but behind closed doors. Did you ever hear Brady, or Brooks, or Sapp ever criticize teammates in public? I’m not saying it never happened but I have never seen it until now.
June 16th, 2026 at 11:25 pm
Oscar Says:
June 16th, 2026 at 6:28 pm
I don’t find anything wrong with what he said. The defense was pathetic ….
—————————————————————————————-
Let’s say that it’s okay to criticize teammates in public. Was Baker’s play so stellar that he deserved to criticize anyone. There were two players last year who have room to criticize but would never do so publicly; Wirfs and Parrish.
June 16th, 2026 at 11:41 pm
Yeah, this isn’t good. It’s actually pretty PATHETIC. Though, I wouldn’t expect anything less. Especially, when it’s just NOT true. It’s more EXCUSES, while never accepting accountability. He’s a CHILD. We CANNOT extend him. He’s not worth it. His play just isn’t good enough to make up for all the BS. It’s all Smoke & Mirrors. I can’t stand players who THINK they are better than they REALLY ARE. A sorry MFer, who is sooooo insecure it’s really embarrassing.
June 16th, 2026 at 11:43 pm
Real true LEADERS do not make EXCUSES in public to the media.
June 16th, 2026 at 11:52 pm
“Ironically, his critics are always complaining that he isn’t putting up enough points to win games for this team, precisely what Baker said he was worried about last year.”
Yeah, but he is using that as HIS EXCUSE and is BLAMING THEM for HIS OWN failures, and poor play last season. That is entirely different, than standing up and taking responsibility, and accepting accountability for YOURSELF.
June 17th, 2026 at 12:12 am
ChiBuc Says: “EXCUSE! Gotta say that comment lowered my opinion of Baker as a team guy.”
Baker has NEVER been a “team guy.” It’s all smoke & mirrors, that just FOOLS a ‘specific type’ of fan. He is a “BAKER GUY” 24/7/365. Always, has been. 💯
June 17th, 2026 at 12:32 am
Baker is NOT a better Quarterback than Purdy OR Dak. And, it’s just not even really that close. Ask Mike (and you people are trying to blame the DEFENSE lol). I mean, that’s laughable to even try to compare. Their horrific injuries aside, they are just on another level. They are calm, smooth, and under control. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. Their ball is always on-time, and exactly on the money, where it needs to be. They are machines. Even on the majority of Baker’s completions, they are rarely on-time, and accurate. They’re always, either a touch too high, (&/or) thrown BEHIND them. It’s why we couldn’t pick up any YAC. Because, he also holds onto the ball TOO LONG. And, HE is always erratic and has to try too hard. A lot of that is due to his size, but it’s sure NOT pretty. Everything THEY DO (Dak and Purdy) is effortless. Then, you a have to “Bake-in” (lol) all of the other BS. He’s still extremely immature and insecure. He’s focused on all of the WRONG THINGS. He is a HUGE walking DISTRACTION and is just NOT worth-it. HIS PLAY has not been good enough. And, these are all of the reasons why he once again, finds himself in this exact same situation that he is in now.

“Brooks, or Sapp ever criticize teammates in public?” It doesn’t matter. NO ONE wants/needs to hear it from THEIR QUARTERBACK. It’s just different.

@Scotty, you flatter me. Not only do you read my comments, you also think of me as an expert. That may be the first opinion I’ve seen of yours, all be it sarcastic, that is wholly your own. I completely agree with you that Jordan Love is a meh QB. but here is the irony in your point….Jordan Love has a higher career win percentage than Baker Mayfield. Just because GB threw out stupid money, the Bucs should follow suit? Lemmings. Now run along and see what Pat has to say so you can regurgitate it for us

All these posts that describe last year’s abomination is exactly why there is so much angst with the fans still. It was a collective disaster. We all want a good solid team that plays complimentary football. Bowles is ultra lucky to be given another chance at redemption but he’ll be under an electron microscope from the opening kickoff on week 1 in Sept. As he should be.
