Ruben Bain “Superpower” Is Against The Run

June 15th, 2026

Rueben Bain

A former Bucs quarterback who breaks down film for the slimy Saints seems to have a crush on Rueben Bain.

The Miami Mauler edge rusher has the eye of Luke McCown, the former Bucs backup QB who should have been Tampa Bay’s 2009 starter over Byron Leftwich.

McCown served as Drew Brees’ backup in New Orleans for a few years and now works as analyst for the Saints website. Around draft time, McCown shared his film study of Bain and it was all sunshine and awe.

Interestingly, McCown appeared to be most in love with Bain’s ability to stuff runs.

“Here’s his superpower, playing on first and second downs, playing against the run, coming off the ball with great pad level, great extension and strength, shedding a block and the making the tackle,” McCown detailed. “He’s an every-down player. … He can do all the things you want him to do.

As far as pass rush, McCown broke down Bain’s successful speed moves, and how he overcomes short arms with leverage and getting into the chest of offensive tackles tackles. McCown likes how Bain overpowers linemen’s hands with stronger hands. He said “pure manpower” sets Bain apart.

Of course, McCown was looking at the Saints possibly drafting Bain at No. 8 overall. He went No. 15 to the Bucs while New Orleans picked receiver Jordyn Tyson.

McCown did not address Bain having any ability to drop into pass coverage.

I have a bad feeling Bowles will screw him up moving him all around, and dropping him in coverage.

  2. Will Says:

Let’s be positive and not count the ways he could be tainted,

  3. 3.28.Evans Says:

If he really works hard, he might be able to spell Antoine Winfield in the way deep zone where someone got wide open deep anyway.

  4. Winny Testaverde Says:

One of the many things I like about Bain is that he’s not a loop around the tackle kind of edge rusher. Of course he can do that with incredible “bend”…but can also rip/tear through the middle while creating complete chaos. Very fortuitous that he fell to The Bucs.

  5. Bee Says:

I will refrain from making a pass coverage joke. But in all seriousness, I’m eager to see how he’ll be used. I like his attitude and I think the team finally has someone to provide some juice and energy. We’ll see…

  6. DavidsHogg Says:

I don’t think Bowles has had a talent like this since JPP/Shaq. Guys here seem to think JTS was bouta be a 10 sack guy if not for occasionally having to drop into coverage (he wasn’t)

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Well it’s either Bain or Diaby dropping into coverage fellas. Unless you want to blitz or pull a defensive lineman out. If you pull out the lineman, then you have two pass rushers on the outside outweighed by 50-60-70 pounds each. Not recommended.

I swear some of the repetitive posts on here are like women when they she another woman wearing ugly shoes and think they’re “fabulous” and next thing ya see every chick is wearing the same ugly shoes, SMDH. Mynah birds.

  9. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    Can’t wait to see Bain.

Also gonna keep an eye on Owen McCown at UTSA this fall, the kid is a bit of a run but he can sling it

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Based on watching his tape since we drafted him, he does look really strong vs the run. It’s not just power, it’s also intelligence – he’s so quick to respond to what is happening, he really has a great feel for what the offenses are doing.

Again, I didn’t really watch much from him before the draft since I didn’t think there was any chance the Bucs would get him – but since then, watching tape, I can see why people talked about him as maybe going as high as #2 overall. He’s got that sort of talent, and that sort of tape. The nonsense about his T-Rex arms, if that’s the reason he fell… it worked out amazing for the Bucs.

  11. Kenton Smith Says:

Rod, that’s about as good player profile as I’ve seen you make. I believe the guy is so talented that it could spread to the whole defense. “ if that’s the reason he fell”. I think we both know the reason he fell to us. And I hope he knows that we’re all pulling for him to make great decisions. Because if he can do that, then our decision will have been a great decision, too.

  12. Lokog Says:

We will see what he’s made of

  13. ryan a. smith Says:

I haven’t been this excited about a pick in a long long time. To me this is what I would have felt like if we would have got Megatron in the 2007 draft, or Suh in the 2010 draft.

  14. Larrd Says:

Diaby is good against the run, too. Those two plus Kancey, if healthy, will be a good pass rushing threesome, as well. Undersized but quick and strong, with Vea the anchor. Four on the line most of the time is best!

  15. Oldbucsfan Says:

That’s the last thing I wanna hear! It should be getting after the QB!

  16. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

This guy will call Todd out if he gets stuff way wrong. He is a true alpha. Like Suh was. Can’t wait to see him play

  17. Football 1 Says:

It is definitely hard to refrain from the coverage jokes. However I will let’s hope the guy doesn’t press with all the hype . Remember he is a rookie and not in the HOF yet

  18. David Says:

One of the most pessimistic fan bases in the entire NFL. I get it, we did not want Bowles to stay, but he did, so move on, get optimistic, and get on board, or go away and don’t watch.

If you expect him to come out as a rookie and have 10 sacks, your expectations are too high. I hope he does but if he gets 8 as a rookie and Yaya can get 10, i’ll be real happy. That and Kancey staying healthy.

  19. MonsVenusVIP Says:

Oh don’t worry, Bowles will have Bain will drop back in 2nd and short situations and cover the slot receiver.

  20. 3.28.Evans Says:

There can be no optimism until The Bucs Biggest Problem is no longer employed by The Bucs.
