Keionte Scott = Cam Skattebo

May 4th, 2026

Rookie Bucs cornerback Keionte Scott.

Giants fans loved their rookie running back last season, Cam Skattebo, who did a decent Mike Alstott impression before suffering a serious injury.

At 5-9, 220 pounds, Skattebo was a fun fourth-round pick that ran for 410 yards and 5 touchdowns on 101 carries. And he had 207 receiving yards and a couple of scores. All came in just half a season’s work.

So who will be this year’s Skattebo in the NFL, meaning what Day 3 draft pick (Rounds 4 through 7) will become a fan favorite in a hurry for his style of play?

If you ask former quarterback Chris Simms and Connor Rogers of NBC’s Unbuttoned podcast, that guy will be Bucs rookie nickel cornerback Keionte Scott. The Bucs grabbed him in Round 4 out of the University of Miami.

Rogers is convinced fans quickly will be on the Scott bandwagon.

“He’s physical. He’s loud. He plays the run like a linebacker,” Rogers said. “He’s got clock-and-close; he can pick off the ball because of his instincts. He’s someone to me that I just think we’ll get to the end of the year and [say], ‘What the hell was Keionte Scott doing on the [draft] board on Day 3?”

Simms agreed.

“And I can see [Scott teammate and Bucs first-round pick Rueben] Bain becoming one of those rookie favorites of a fan base right away with his attitude, his no-nonsense,” Simms said. He’ll make a couple of crazy physical plays to get the fanbase jump on the bandwagon with him.”

Simms added that Bain should become the role of loveable “bad guy.”

The hype for the Bucs rookies rolls on!

There will be open competition in training camp
Keionte Scott will have the same opportunity as an UDFA
All of this hype is just noise, that’s all it is

Ascl said, EVERY position on this team should be up for grabs
And the best player on the field should grab it
Not a fan favorite, not a media darling, no more jobs should be handed out

  2. Allen Lofton Says:

He was a good blitzer in College so we already what Todd Bowles will be doing with him. If our defense becomes a top 10 the offense will more chances to score. When that happens the Bucs will win their conference and make noise in the playoffs.

  3. J Says:

I like to think Scott will have an impact like Cooper DeJean, only sooner.

Cooper DeJean and Scott had similar stats in college. Albeit, DeJean only played 3 years to Scott’s 4 years, but even if you subtract Scott’s freshman stats DeJean and Scott are pretty even. DeJean overall (7) had 3 more takeaways than Scott (4… 2 INtTDs & 2 FF & FR). Scott had 2 pick 6s, and Dejean 3.

  4. ScottyMack Says:

Who new that “Lakeland” had become the coach of the Bucs?

  5. Truth be Told Says:

whatever happened to players wearing knee pads Joe? Are they really that restrictive? What’s changed?

  6. Saskbucs Says:

    Lakeland isn’t wrong.

Why should Zyon be handed a job? Can ask that question all over the roster outside like 9 players and Baker and the OL make up the bulk of those 9.

Shouldnt matter what you make or where you were drafted. Once that 53 is set… who is helping win ball games? That’s the only question.

  7. Tony Says:

If we’re gonna compare possible 4th round steals how about maybe Maxx Crosby. I think I’d rather go with him over Skattebo so far even though we gotta wait to see what goes on with Scott. He’s just coming out.

  8. B Says:

Simms being out of Football Night in America has officially pushed his takes from “Thirsty” to “Desperate”. Wonder if he did one comically thin Skattebo comparison per team or are we just special?

  9. TampaBayBucFan Says:

With a name like Skattebo, even the most normal plays seem unique…

  10. Kenton Smith Says:

Shame to see Skattebo hurt his knee like that last year. If you can get 2 or 3 playmakers they’re liable to win a game a season for you making a play. That’s something Lavonte could do. I watched him make some plays the last 2 or 3 years that were game changers. I know that Jacob Rodriguez is gonna do some game changing. I’m gonna have to wait for Scott to show me what he’s got. Our defense has improved, but I wanna see the football get turned around and going the other way. I’m gonna look it up, but I’ll bet those Bucs defenses of lore(turn of the century-high time for more) knocked a bunch of footballs loose. That’s the kind of defense I want to see. And Trotter and Scott are just gonna need to come through. It does look like they should have it in them. Gonna find out in the next 3 or 4 months.

  11. Kenton Smith Says:

I just looked back at Bucs defensive stats 1998-2002. 31 interceptions in 2002? Holy Moly. 13.2 points against. Top 5 all 5 of those years. Plus 17 turnover differential. Interceptions turn the field just like fumbles. Good defensive lines cause chaos. Imagine if this team got on a defensive run like those five years? We would be the first team in NFL history to win 3 consecutive Super Bowls. I can see it now.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

So he’s one concussion away from being a vegetable? That’s terrible news.

  13. Todd Says:

Lakeland, the starting edge should be handed out to Bain.

    Period.

    End of story.

End of that virtue signal nonsense.

  14. Stpetematt Says:

It’s not virtue signaling to say everyone should have to compete for their position. Bain would win his anyway. This statement is most pointed at McCollum- who could get beat by both Morrison and Parrish. He might be the most athletic of the three but his tackling and coverage are suspect. Maybe he has a much better year this year but open competition at CB would be a good thing.

  15. Stpetematt Says:

I also think Scott with his massive speed is going to be a HUGE addition to our defense. It’s going to be much harder for wide plays to run around our defenders and down the sideline than it was. He can really help in limiting huge plays. Bain and Robinson will help a lot too by limiting holes and making plays at the line of scrimmage before they get started. And teams still have to double Vea. So what do they do with Bain?

  16. JimBobBuc Says:

Bain should be moved around the front so he can find a matchup he can dominate. In long yardage, make sure Bain, Kancey, and Roberts are along the front with Keionte blitzing.

If Trotter is on the field, offenses will force him to cover, even in early downs. Trotter needs to work hard on his coverage the entire offseason. We don’t want him to be the next SVD in coverage.

Zyon gave up a lot of red zone touchdowns because he’s terrible in man coverage. He has long speed but not the agility for man coverage. Pull him in the red zone.

  17. Slacker Says:

Looks like they are stocked up on a bunch of blitzing run stoppers. Teams will just continue to throw and pick apart this defense as they have in the past. Thats where a good coverage LB was the pick when Trotter was selected. And there was high prospects available.

  18. 3.28.Evans Says:

    LOL

Bowles will read this and have Scott play offense.

  19. firethecannons Says:

It was a good draft, I’m back on board.
