Baker Mayfield Closing In On Bucs History

May 5th, 2026

Franchise record within reach.

UPDATED: Pretty interesting piece of Bucs history brought up by Sam Robinson of Pro Football Rumors that could be snapped.

In recent months, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer have openly, if not enthusiastically, discussed re-signing Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield to a new deal.

Mayfield is in a contract year, This will be his fourth season as Bucs starting quarterback. He hasn’t missed a start.

With a new contract, barring something unforeseen, it’s likely Mayfield would be the starting quarterback through 2028.

Would you believe (said in a Maxwell Smart voice), per Robinson, that if Mayfield does re-up with the Bucs and starts the 2028 season as the Bucs’ starting signal-caller, he will tie a franchise record for most years as a Bucs starting quarterback?

Per Robinson, Mayfield will tie Vinny Testaverde as the longest-tenured starting quarterbacks for the Bucs, if he is the starter at the end of the 2027 season?

Testaverde strarted six straight years before leaving the team as a free agent.

Doug Williams lasted five years. He, too, left as a free agent. Trent Dilfer was a five-year starter after being a backup as a rookie. America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, lasted five years as well.

Brad Johnson, who won a Super Bowl with the Bucs, hung with the Bucs for four years. The fact Johnson lasted three years with Chucky is like a marathon because Chucky never met a quarterback he didn’t like, and didn’t try to replace.

Hopefully, we will get this defense on track
It will take a very dominant defense to win a championship
I don’t believe the offense have enough firepower to get it done

  2. SethB22 Says:

Think we should go get him Keenan Allen as a mentor/Stop Gap for Ted Hurst. Allen has proven to be a great mentor to younger players and has a lot of traits that Hurst has. Kind of like VJax to Mike. Think it’s too much to put on a Georgia St kid to just walk in the league and be the guy supposed to move the chains. Idk, just my thoughts and it helps Baker.

  3. Saskbucs Says:

@SethB … I like Allen but aside from the experience you mentioned, he isn’t doing anything on the field that Godwin, JMac and Emeka aren’t doing.

JMac and Emeka were under Mike. Godwin is a pros pro and a seasoned vet himself.

With our WR coach, if Hurst can’t learn from the guys already in house, he’s got problems.

Back to Baker, I’d be shocked if he didn’t break that record. I figured this was the record he was set to break or QB rushing yards.

    @SethB

I like Allen but he’s not needed. If Hurst can’t learn from the people the Bucs already have in house, he’s got big problems. Godwin is a SB vet and pros pro. JMac and Emeka have been under him and Mike, we have a good WR coach.

Coming back to topic, I’d be shocked if Baker didn’t break that record by a year or two.

    Whoops, got the turkey.

    I’m not sold

  7. Brian in FL Says:

    Wait. This math ain’t mathing. ‘23, ‘24, ‘25, ‘26, and ‘27 would be 5 seasons, not 6. Am I missing something?

  8. Jeagan1999 Says:

Baker will lead us to a Super Bowl victory!!

    Count on it!!

  9. Pickgrin Says:

Learn how to count Sam Robinson…. Use your fingers if you need help.

    3+2=5

Mayfield has played 3 seasons as Bucs QB. (’23, ’24 and 2025).

’26 and ’27 would make FIVE years as Bucs starting QB.

How did Joseph not catch this Pre-school level miscalculation before writing 9 paragraphs touting said blunder?

  10. Get-Rid-of-Licht Says:

better records to attempt : if Baker has a 10+ win season he will tie the Brady record of two 10+ seasons with the Bucs – if Baker wins a playoff game he will be alone in 3rd place behind Johnson’s 3 wins and Brady’s 5 – if Baker throws 27+ TDs he will be alone in first place for TDs – and best of all if he wins a SB he will tie Brady and Johnson’s mark

  11. Get-Rid-of-Licht Says:

and if Baker somehow gets 12 wins he will be the winningest Bucs QB ever – imagine that – Tom Brady was undoubtedly the best Bucs QB ever – Brad Johnson was pretty good – Williams Young King Dilfer Testaverde Jameis and an assortment of others were mediocre – could it be that Baker could become the legendary QB most associated with the Bucs as Brady is with the Patriots ? shocking

“We like Mike Glennon. We want him to be part of the future. We like Mike Glennon a lot.” – Jason LichT

  13. Bee Says:

Joe is counting years on a contract that doesn’t exist. Lol…Licht extended so many players with bad contracts plus the fact that Baker is as clutch as a 10-speed automatic is why he doesn’t have a contract extension.

Its wait and see for the roster, the coaches and GM.

  14. Gus-Swayze Says:

He’s going to toss way more than 27 tuddies this year. Baker gets his deal and becomes all time passing td leader in Tampa bay history 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️ but the fan base will continue to bash him and say he’s not good enough while forgetting the years of qb purgatory we were in before Brady came to town.

  15. Stpetematt Says:

121 yards rushing for Baker and he ties Winston for all time rushing for a Bucs QB. 1 more yard and he will have the record.

  16. Kenton Smith Says:

He looks like an electronics warehouse manager. He’s actually a QB savant. Now if we could get some defense going. Whew doggies.

  17. ChiBuc Says:

Williams Young King Dilfer … were mediocre

Do you even hear yourself, or is it just a chaotic punctuationless rambling stream of consciousness in your head? 3 of those QBs were SB winners, 2 were SB MVPs, and one is in the HOF. They played for bad Buc teams with a tight wad owner who wouldn’t pay for a supporting cast. By no means were Williams or Young mediocre and while King didn’t get a ring, he and Brady have virtually identical win percentages as buccaneers.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

    gotta win first baker!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. 3.28.Evans Says:

    Facepalm

With a real head coach there’s a chance Mayfield could lose his gag reflex. Maybe.

  20. garro Says:

Hate to say this but because of the way Baker plays the game he may not last that long Joe. Got a bad feeling.

    Go Bucs!

  21. HeavyE Says:

#6 will disappoint us, like he always does!!!

  22. unbelievable Says:

A few of you math geniuses should devote some time to your reading comprehension capabilities:

per Robinson, that if Mayfield does re-up with the Bucs and starts the 2028 season as the Bucs’ starting signal-caller, he will tie a franchise record for most years as a Bucs starting quarterback?
