If The Bucs Are Serious About Winning, Then Where Is Jason Taylor?

May 12th, 2026

Hire this man!

Joe has typed this before. And it’s worthy of typing again.

If the Bucs truly are serious about winning this year, which will result in saving jobs, then why isn’t one of the best assistant coaches in college football, a guy who has demonstrated he knows what he is doing with edge rushers, not been hired by the Bucs?

Joe is referring to Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor, the defensive line coach with Miami, specializing in defensive ends.

When Taylor came on board with the Hurricanes, Miami had a middling defense. Two years later the Canes jumped from No. 64 to No. 22 in the nation. And all of Taylor’s defensive linemen were named All-ACC.

We know what Taylor did last year. He turned Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain into complete beasts of defensive ends. They mauled and punished people week-in and week-out and nearly helped The U pull off an upset of Indiana in the national championship game.

Joe would say that Taylor has a better resume than maybe all of the Bucs’ defensive assistants except for Larry Foote.

Putting Taylor in charge of working with Bain would just be perfect.

Taylor, at the end of his career, played under Bucs coach Todd Bowles in Miami. So he knows what makes Bowles tick. So why isn’t Taylor with the Bucs? It’s not like going from Miami to Tampa is like going to Buffalo. It’s still good and warm most of the year in Tampa.

The phone call to Taylor asking how many zeros he needs on a check to get him up here should have already been placed.

What’s the holdup?

Why hasn’t any team n the NFL hired him yet? I mean he’s the next great DL coach guru and turned Mesidor and Bain into first rounders..32 teams out there and no one has called to hire him.

  2. Ha-Ha-Ha Says:

This is what I’ve been saying all alongalong. Why can’t we get a defensive coordinator?
Why aren’t people knocking down the door to work for the greatest defensive coach ever.
The biggest greatest defensive mind in the League that everybody should be trying to work for, kind of like how (offensively) everybody wants to work for McVey or Shanahan.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

    Someone has a man-crush…

    LOL!

  4. Stpetematt Says:

Who knows if it wasn’t placed and turned down? Those jobs in college athletics tend to be more stable and very lucrative. People also sometimes make promises when they take jobs. There’s lots of potential reasons why he might not be able to take it/move.

  5. FortMyersDave Says:

Seems like he would be a good hire. Todd probably does not want to let go of one of his defensive coaches to give Taylor a “title” as Bowles is loyal to a fault with his coaching staff which was really detrimental last year (just like Koetter’s loyalty to Smitty). So how about giving Taylor the title :special adviser to the defense, edge, Bowles…. One thought: perhaps Taylor simply likes coaching the kids down at the U and does not want an NFL job, has anyone asked him?

  6. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

Who really wants to take a job with Todd as the boss?? Seriously. He’s a lame duck on his way out either retirement or otherwise.

  7. Lt. Dan Says:

Serious question Joe’s: Is hiring Jason Taylor even remotely on the horizon for the Bucs or is the hiring just a “Joe pipe dream?”

  8. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Way too late, spring games have happened, coaching staffs are pretty much set around the country and nobody is asking if Jason Taylor has any desire to coach at the NFL level. Taylor has to make sure Moten, Lightfoot, Blount, and that Miami defense back to the CFP.

This was a move to make back in January, now if we had some way of inviting Taylor to camp just to “observe” that’d serve as much purpose, but hiring is pretty much done.

  9. Lefty R Says:

The Same Reason as to why Jim Schwartz has not been hired to replace the current but ineffective Buccaneer DC…… The Glazers and Mr AC DC FEAR THE BEARD!!!

  10. ChiBuc Says:

@Joe, the hold up is your ROH GM, Jason Licht. He is a trend follower, not setter. He needs ownership or the HC to nudge him into action, he does not do the nudging and the former only cares about the money and the current HC is a dullard when it comes to change.

  11. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

Has Jason Taylor ever indicated that he has a desire to coach in the NFL?

It seems rediculous to criticize the Bucs without first answering that question.

  12. DBS Says:

So why don’t the Bucs hire every great coach that has made great players look great in college? Who won the championship in 2025 ? Have they hired those coaches yet?

  13. jcscycles Says:

He might be on a multi-year contra t and cannot leave.

  14. Truth be Told Says:

    JOE-

Why haven’t you or somebody else asked that question directly to the Bucs brass?

    BINGO!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. Evo Says:

We don’t have a direct line to Bucs executives. YOU DO! And I have yet to hear that asked at those press conferences with the horrible audio. Please ask for us, Joes. I’m sure by posting this article, you know Bucs brass will see this and read the comments.

I’d bring Taylor in just to see our guys play with the fire the Miami defense played with last year, especially the line. They got after it. Our line hasn’t had that since Suh left.

  17. TampaBayBucFan Says:

What an insult to our current coach. Time for Bain to shine with a new coach.

  18. SB~LV ? Says:

    We have Bowels!

  19. DailyRich Says:

Way to tell your current defensive staff “Yeah, on second thought, we don’t think you can do the job, so, because of that and because we drafted this one particular player, we’re bringing in a new guy.” Stop beating this drum already.

  20. Bojim Says:

Maybe he likes where he’s at in life?

  21. Borimex 813 Says:

    The connection is REAL.
Joe make this happen. Todd Bowles, Jason Licht I hope you’re reading this post and FWD to Jason Taylor.

    * mutual respect ✅
    * Bowles/Taylor Dolphins history together ✅
    * defensive background alignment ✅
    * shared connection through Miami football culture ✅

Recruiting former players with Taylor’s reputation help attract defensive talent and will create excitement around the buccaneers organization. One that’s been missing since the days of Warren Sapp and my boy John Lynch.

You want to bring back fans to the stands, let’s build a bullying defense Tampa Bay headhunters that will create havoc for the next 10 years. We bring JT in as Todd’s assistant and lock him in for the next decade.

LFG!!!! I love the idea Joe.

  22. ModHairKen Says:

Why haven’t they hired Warren Sapp?

  23. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

Bringing JT in to coach would be an admission to failure by current DC (Todd) so ain’t no way there would ever happen or be discussed.

  24. Guzzie55 Says:

Who wouldn’t rather live in Miami over most NFL cities

  25. Todd Says:

Jason Taylor is under contract with Miami for 2026 , so maybe he is one of the rare cats who believes in honoring his word??

  26. Todd Says:

He’s not gonna leave Miami to work for Toilet Bowles

  27. ocala Says:

Bowles is the reason he wouldn’t come to Tampa.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He has to want to go to the NFL as well. Maybe they actually did contact him about it.

  29. Brandon Says:

Maybe he doesn’t WANT to work in the NFL… maybe he’s not as good as you think… the team D went from #64 to #22… that could have been for any reason. Players maturing, new scheme, another new coach, anything. Hall-of-fame players often make the worst coaches. I’m not saying he’s bad… I’m saying there is probably ample reason why he isn’t coaching in the NFL.

  30. Kenton Smith Says:

Lt. Dan. The answer to your question is yes.

  31. Steven007 Says:

I mean, why not raid the cupboards of every position coach in college that has good players? Ohio State wide receiver coach? Come on down. Maybe their defensive line coach as well? And on down the line. A bit of a chicken and egg thing here. Were these not highly rated recruits from high school? Certainly Bain was. Would he have just been a pedestrian player without Taylor? This seems like one of those weird Joe pipe dreams. That he refuses to give up on. As people have already mentioned, I’m sure they went down this road if it was even a possibility. Those tires have certainly been kicked. The guy lives in Miami and coaches in… Miami. What makes you think he’d even be interested?

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Ha-Ha-Ha Says:
“This is what I’ve been saying all alongalong. Why can’t we get a defensive coordinator?”

I want one too…but I don’t think he qualified for the DC position. DL Assistant maybe.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:
“Who really wants to take a job with Todd as the boss?? Seriously. He’s a lame duck on his way out either retirement or otherwise.”

Maybe. Maybe not. We all thought he would be gone this year.

Outside of injuries, I don’t think this year cannot be better than last year…so he might just save his job.

I’m guessing that if the team makes it to the Superbowl, he’ll retire…but it’s just a guess. If he makes it to the Conference championship, he might decide to stay another year, convincing himself that he could go all the way next year.

  34. Mveal2006 Says:

Make it so joe. We need something after what Hassan did to us

  35. Kenton Smith Says:

Bain is a huge talent. May not be my cup of tea but all you’ve got to do is watch him play. Dang near scary. Joe pipe dreamed Emeka and he is going to be a star. Joe’s been pipe dreaming an edge for years and man, I believe Bain is going to be one, too. So I’m saying that Joe’s pipe dreaming isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But with Bain, and players like him, I believe Joe could make a living coaching him. All you have to do is stand back(way back) and yell “sic-em!!

  36. LynchMob50 Says:

Joes pipe dream is never going to happen. But we’re going to hear about it for months to come.

And he will never ask such a pouted question to Bowels, Licht, or any of the Glazer kids.

Simple answer: “They’re sticking with Bowles!!!” – Ira Kaufman

Now go have a coconut donut.

  37. Ash Says:

Haven’t you beat that horse enough let that one go oof can’t wait until the season starts.

  38. Steve V. Says: Says:

Duh! He wants a DC position…

  39. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I’ll preface what I’m going to write here by saying my preference was that the Bucs replace Bowles after this past offseason.

But he is NOT as bad as many seem to believe. He’s been in charge of the defense the entire time he’s been with the team. His record in the playoffs is
5 -5 with one Lombardi Trophy, and his defense has given up 21.7 PPG during those playoff games to mostly elite-level QBs. If you compare that PPG in the playoffs with other DC’s, you’ll find that it’s pretty damn good.

  40. BigBoiBuc Says:

Why don’t we just hire the position coach of every good player drafted? Ridiculous. Name some more dominant edge rushers this guru has turned into all pros? Bain may get a rude awakening when he is playing against really good NFL level tackles this year instead of guys from Florida A&M. They get paid too.

  41. 3.28.Evans Says:

We both know why my Joe. The resident genius who should be a college professor thinks he’s got it nailed and knows better than everyone else, which is why everyone else but him got fired. Hopefully someone realizes the talents of Jason Taylor for a post-Bowles cleanse.

  42. Lakeland Says:

There’s a reason why NO team has hired him
We just hired a experienced D-Line coach
    Give him a chance

  43. DavidsHogg Says:

Maybe (stop me if I’m moving too fast) the already wealthy man probably getting paid a good amount to coach at the school where he already lives isn’t looking to be bought? If you’ve already got generational wealth what’s the point of doing something for money?

  44. Steve V. Says: Says:

Bucsfan your pi$$ing in the wind with these cutthroat Todd Bowles fans! Its Joe’s blame game here!

  45. garro Says:

I’m with you on this one 1000% Joe. Something else to notei is that I’m sure the Bucs are not the only NFL team who noticed Taylor turning things around at Miami. Get it done please team Glazer.

Not nearly as impressed with Foote as I used to be Joe.

    Go Bucs

  46. Steve V. Says: Says:

You all say Bowles is “horrible”, then you say Taylor is ” unqualified ” Ya’ll where’s the cheese! UgH!

  47. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I suspect Jason Taylor likes coaching at the U, and particularly for Mario Crisotobal. He’s not going to leave just because a team offers him a job as a position coach in the NFL. Big league college football is of the same caliber as the NFL, so why jump ship to chase a dollar. Jason is where he wants to be.

  48. George R Says:

Joe, sounds like a question you should ask.

  49. 813bucboi Says:

how about we hire the former OU coach for Baker lol…

im sure he can get baker to avoid choking away games in the 4th quarter

    GO BUCS!!!!

  50. SlyPirate Says:

    A) DL Coach for Tampa
HC is about to get fired, a team with F- facilities, and stadium never sells out.

    -or-

    B) DL Coach for University of Miami
Coach is a beloved, A+ Facility, super fun city, crazy fans, players that respect you.

    Such a hard decision.

  51. Stpetematt Says:

I just had a funny random thought. Watching Bain and Tristan Wirfs practice against each other will be kind of like watching an irresistible force meet an immovable object. Should be something else!

  52. Pickgrin Says:

Seems like Joseph and any others clamoring to bring in Jason Taylor are ignoring the fact that Bain’s current coach – Larry Foote – played 13 years in the NFL as a LB and has 3 Super Bowl rings (2 as a player and 1 as a coach). Foote also has 11 years experience as an NFL coach…. Taylor has 0. Just Sayin……

  53. Obvious One Says:

    JOE…..

    You ALREADY KNOW why…….

  54. Bosch Says:

Nearly every post above is dead on correct. Question answered.

  55. #1bucsfan Says:

JOE out of all of us you have the voice that is heard the most. Get it done lol

  56. Rod Munch Says:

Maybe he saw the game last year in Miami where the Bucs were in a must win scenario, and Baker came out and singlehandedly cost the Bucs any chance at victory. Why would he want to tie his future to a team with a QB who plays like that in the biggest situations and who just got his entire offensive staff fired? If you’re Taylor and want to come to the NFL, you’re going to come in with a new staff where you have some time – and almost certainly he’d be a DC, if he doesn’t jump straight to HC (wouldn’t completely rule it out).

  57. MelvinJunior Says:

This whole Jason Taylor obsession makes ZERO sense to begin with, and on so many levels. But, HE is NOT leaving MIAMI. Definitely not for the BUCS. JT IS MIAMI. And, WHY would he!? I sure as hell wouldn’t. He’s got a nice little deal going on there. ?

  58. Kenton Smith Says:

Munchabunch. Don’t know what it is, but your posts make me laugh. And I mean belly laughs. Thanks for brightening my day. And I ain’t whistling Dixie!

  59. LakelandSteve Says:

I think maybe, just maybe the Bucs already have a coach for Bain and the other outside linebackers/defensive ends. Besides, Taylor has a great gig in Miami that won’t be gone after the end of this season. People may not like it but Bowles is already on the hot seat and if the Bucs aren’t significantly improved and do damage in the playoffs Bowles will be toast.

  60. Pewter power Says:

I’m assuming you think Jason Taylor only taught Bain what he needed to know to rush the passer in college and Bucs need to bring him on because on the NFL he’s going to teach him all these new things he decided to hold back? nobody has time to teach Taylor how he needs to rush the passer in THIS scheme. Yaya getting 7 sacks and he won’t get any help from any vets.

  61. BucaneroJim Says:

I suspect Taylor would want a higher position than line coach, like defense assistant coach, but Todd Bowles Jr got that job for 2026. Looks like a nice young man.

  62. Buc king Says:

Should of been done the day after the draft

  63. MelvinJunior Says:

JT is having way too much fun coaching all that young talent, and living in MIAMI. He’s going nowhere. And, who cares. So, STOP.
