Bucs Get A Notre Dame Guard

April 25th, 2026

New Bucs G Billy Schrauth.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht loves his offensive linemen from the northern Midwest.

In the fifth round, Licht drafted Notre Dame guard Billy Schrauth, a native of Wisconsin. You can always bank on a multi-year starter from a big-time program like Notre Dame for backup offensive linemen.

A red-haired offensive lineman like Schrauth from a small town in the upper Midwest who was a captain of his college team? That just screams “Jason Licht.”

Joe first wrote about Schrauth in early March as a possible Bucs target.

Here is what Dane Brugler of The Athletic typed about Schrauth in his draft tome “The Beast.”

Schrauth is solid across the board. He has the athletic ability, play strength and demeanor to compete for NFL starting snaps (if he stays off the injured list and reaches his development potential). His game gives off Wyatt Teller vibes.

Most Bucs fans — including Joe — focus on the 2025 collapse on a quitting defense. But almost as big of a culprit was the backup Bucs guards. They played awful football. Michael Jordan and Dan Feeney had two of the worst blocking win-rates in football last year. No wonder Baker Mayfield was beat to hell.

So Joe fully applauds this draft of Schrauth. He comes across like another former Bucs offensive lineman from Notre Dame: Robert Hainsey.

(Apparently, Marcus Freeman interrupted his chat on NBC Sports Network during Notre Dame’s spring game today to announce the Bucs drafted Schrauth. Freeman said the Bucs are getting a “tough” player.)

Schrauth said in a Zoom interview any way he can get on the field and help the Bucs win, and play with a physical attitude, he’s the guy. And the Bucs needed a backup guard like him badly.

Two first round RBs. They must have some decent blockers!

  2. Lakeland Says:

He’s exactly what we were looking for

  3. Jarrett Says:

This is a solid draft overall

    JL addressed some needs

Not sure if this roster really has any position you would consider dominant or elite but we are a decent / ok team right now

Only two receivers are proven (Godwin, Egbuka)

None of our corner backs are proven

Defensive Line is ok on paper but not elite

Replacement linebacker from the lions should be good

It’s really all on baker if this guy can elevate this team. He’s put up some good numbers but nobody considers Baker an Elite QB

Running backs are ok but not elite (Irving , Pittsburgh RB)

    We not elite

  4. Simeon4HOF Says:

If Brederson or Barton gets hurt we will be ok

  5. Inwoodjeremy Says:

There is a FB from Michigan out there named Max Brendeson. Yes that is Bens brother that will probably be available once the draft ends. Interesting to see if he shows up at camp for a look courtesy of his brother.

  6. Rusty Shackleford Says:

    Magic beat Detroit.

  7. Inwoodjeremy Says:

Looks as the Vikings grabbed him in the 5th my bad.

  8. MadMax Says:

Glad we at least addressed Guard….i still need to look up some things on him

  9. Bucsalltheway Says:

We need to draft sawyer robertson…bucs can’t screw this up…he is baker 2.0 with wheeels…

  10. Robert Says:

He is a steal in the 5th. He had a 2nd. Round draft grade. Licht is killing it in this draft.

  11. firethecannons Says:

He blocked for Jermiyah Love and the otherr one Jadarian Price so theres that

  12. 28.3.Evans Says:

Also the captain of the line that blocked for Jeremiah love. A+ draft by the bucs

  13. Mveal2006 Says:

I agree with Colin in Canada and firethecannons but Joe doesn’t do.likes

  14. Gipper Says:

    Joes,

Thank you for stating clearly what Baker was dealing with in Jordan and Feeney. Real Bucs fans saw what was obvious. The anti Baker crowd is nuts. Billy is bound to be an improvement as a back up. Overall the draft program looks very constructive other than lack of coverage capability at ILB.

  15. NC Lifelong Bucs Fan Says:

Okay, let’s just be real. The Bucs have no idea what they’re doing – this draft is laughable. We could have had Bain in 1st, CJ Allen or Anthony Hill in 2nd, and Jermod McCoy in 3rd (could have traded down and got him at end of 3rd given he went 1st in the 4th). For tight end they could have gotten Michael Trigg, yet they draft a total project for a TE. What in the heck are they thinking! Another lost year – Glazers, clean house please!!!
