Report: Bucs Sign University Of Kansas QB

April 26th, 2026

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels reportedly signed with the Bucs.

Kansas football doesn’t often get people excited. The last time it made any dent in the college football world was when Aqib Talib played for the Jayhawks and got them to the Orange Bowl.

However, in recent years, the Jayhawks were competitive, 5-7 in both 2024 and 2025. One reason is they had a halfway decent quarterback, Jalon Daniels.

Unfortunately, Daniels has an issue. The guy has struggled to stay on the field. He was a walking injury report in 2022 and 2023. When he played, Kansas wasn’t awful.

Multiple reports have the Bucs signing Daniels as an undrafted free agent.

Joe normally doesn’t break a sweat over undrafted free agents. Joe actually tries to focus on guys expected to play on Sundays, not guys who if they are lucky, will sit upstairs in air conditioning at The Licht House on Sundays.

Mostly healthy the past two seasons, Daniels threw for damn near 5,000 total yards in 24 games with little talent around him.

This is interesting to Joe in that Daniels could be a really solid No. 3 quarterback and maybe, if he’s coached up, could be a No. 2 quarterback. He’d only need to stay healthy for two or three games if, God forbid, Baker Mayfield went down.

Like this pickup and Bucs paid him nicely as well

  2. FortMyersDave Says:

I read on another outlet that he got a $25K signing bonus and $247K guaranteed salart as an UFDA per Tom Pellisero

    Yawn.

    ryan griffin

    grifff

  5. ATLBuc Says:

I don’t even know why they have a backup QB. They are not going to use him. They will let Baker play hurt and rag the team down like they’ve done the past two seasons!

  6. MadMax Says:

    So, Trigg went to Dallas….figures

  7. HopeIn1Hand... Says:

WR Eric Rivers from Georgia Tech is another UDFA signing worth noting. He is like Tez but with track speed. He might stick around.

WR Noah Short Army is another not so towering camp body?

DT Deshawn McKnight Arizona is probably a large adult size camp body

  8. MadMax Says:

Looks quick at diagnosing, finds the open man…and he can run…..

  9. Mickman Says:

Waste of money and pick. Doubt he will be a QB, likely to be running back over QB

  10. Baking with Robinson Says:

Somebody most have the guts to bench Baker when he is bringing down the team because of injuries. Otherwise is

RINSE AND REPEAT LIKE THE DEFENSE

  11. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

    @Mickman,
He was an UDFA, so no draft capital was needed to acquire him.

When they give that kind of money to an UDFA, they see a real chance for him to eventually make the team, even if a longshot.

The Bucs are better than most at finding eventual starters in UDFA’s. So, it’s a bit premature to write him off as a waste of money.

It’s common in the NFL for talented players to go undrafted. Mr. Irrelevant (AKA Brock Purdy) was the very last pick in the draft. And he turned out pretty good, didn’t he?

  12. Bucsalltheway Says:

Would have preferred sawyer Robertson but I don’t hate this pick he can’t be worst than teddy last year

  13. Bee Says:

This is a waste of time and resources. This QB won’t play under Bowles because he’ll let Baker play “injured” wether hes playing good or not. QB among many other positions on this team where you don’t have to play good to keep your job. Great decision making from the HC.

  14. ChiBuc Says:

Would have much rather seen Luke Altmeyer: tough, smart, consistant, accurate, and played a competitive schedule. And Ai think he would be an easy transition should Baker get injured. Looks like Detroit grabbed him, while JL sorted through the leftover damaged goods pile

  15. Gofortheface30 Says:

In before Rod Munch coming here to proclaim him as a day 1 starter

  16. ATLBuc Says:

    So far the UDFAs are:
Deshawn McKnight — DT, Arizona (NFL Media)
Eric Rivers — WR, Georgia Tech (CBS Sports)
Noah Short — WR, Army (NFL Media)
Jalon Daniels — QB, Kanas (NFL Media)
Jack Pyburn — EDGE, LSU (USA Today)
Maybe Big Gator will be back!!

  17. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

If the Bucs were looking to add a QB it’s ahead scratcher that they didn’t hold fast in round 6 and grabbed their TE and then double dipped on LSU guys by snagging Nussmeier in the 7th before KC did. I mean he could be the next Mile Evan’s stealin’ Brock Purdy? 😆 We joke around about Licht and Bowles wanting to wrap up the draft to get beer and pizza, but it was a little odd trading away their last pick just to move up and grab a guy who is a long shot to make the team.

  18. Marky mark Says:

He fell out if the draft because of injury? Isn’t v that Bakers issue? Are we insane? Trying the same things over and over looking v for different results.

  19. Marky mark Says:

Noah has to serve in the army at least 2 years.

  20. Kidfloflo Says:

For everybody saying he won’t see the field cause Baker will play hurt, well get ready this year! Because Baker is NEVER coming off the field, with Blows job on the line even more so this year,.he will send him out in a cast to try and win games! Any people dont realize the fire Baker will have this year to out play Purdy and show Evans he made a huge mistake by choosing him instead! Us fans will definitely benefit from that extra motivation Baker will have this year….He’s gonna ball out just like he did under Liam! Watch

  21. Kenton Smith Says:

Kidfloflo. Stefanski has won one playoff game in his life. He hung 48 points on the Steelers- in Pittsburgh. Just so happens Baker was his QB. Canales and Liam are looking like hotshots. I believe the commen denominator there just happens to be Baker Mayfield. Baker said last season that he hates the Saints. Zac Robinson is gonna know to let Baker be Baker and turn it loose on the Falcons. Those6 division games will be interesting. Interesting like in “more fun than a barrel of monkeys”. We’ve got some good help in this draft- great JBF work by our crack reporting team, from the combine through to yesterday. The time is coming. My prediction for this season is that we are going 6-0 in division. We’d have won 12 games last year with a healthy OLine. And if the OLine stays healthy this year we are as good a team as any in this league.

  22. BuccaDawg Says:

T our GM always finds a guy from Kansas. Big deal

Amazing that Baker haters can twist a UDFA signing into a Baker hating comment.
    And it’s spelled whether.

  24. 40 year Bucs fan Says:

Like the player but it wouldn’t matter if licht would do his job and draft a franchise qb, it’s only been 12 years now

  25. Joejack63 Says:

    @Mickman he wasn’t a pick up dweeb

  26. Joejack63 Says:

    @Mickman he wasn’t a pick up moron

  27. Lakeland Says:

The Bucs has signed some interesting Linebackers as UDFA

  28. Kenton Smith Says:

Common. Not Commen. I knew that didn’t look right.

  29. garro Says:

Camp arm with a chance to impress me thinks.

    Go Bucs!

  30. LFGBucs Says:

Bring back Dez Watson and give home a real chance to practice. The Bucs defence needs to get off the field more often after 3 downs.

  31. Leopold Stotch Says:

This kid damn near single-handedly beat Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl in ’22. Best freaking game I saw. The coach got cute at the end and had the backup overthrow to lose it.

  32. Mveal2006 Says:

I indulged my inner nerdness looked up what we did with and our other post draft signings on the CBS udfa rating board.

CBS is not impressed with us at all in this area.

But all the rating services gave most teams a or b plus on their grades.

Rarely does anyone revisit the results later but if everyone got an a no one improved

Good luck to all the guys they have good pr and seem likable

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“This QB won’t play under Bowles because he’ll let Baker play “injured” wether hes playing good or not.”

When the option was Teddy Bridgewater, of course Baker toughed it out. That doesn’t mean a different backup won’t be able to play.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I believe Joe is mistaken on assuming he will be the number 3.

I think there will be a competition for the #2 backup…because the two already signed before the draft are not so good either is guaranteed the #2.

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jalon Daniels may just surprise us all.

His injuries could have been due to a lack of protection. He seems very mobile. Pocket aware.

  36. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Bucs coach UP a player of any kind, especially a qb??? Show us where that’s ever happened!!! Unless they’re a 3rd rounder or higher not much chance of them sticking or staying with the team. Overall that has been the Buccaneer way and by keeping this head coach and his assistant choices doesn’t bode well that will Chang any sooner. Dungy and Arians are the only coaches I can think of who bucked that trend.

  37. CalBucsFan Says:

Alabama’s LB Deontae is still out there as a free agent. Need more LB Licht, go get him!

  38. CalBucsFan Says:

    Deontae Lawson that is.

  39. Mobucs Says:

If they are paying him a lot, it has to be because there was competition and an auction, so the Bucs aren’t the only team interested. Not a bad sign, unless the other teams were the Browns and the Jets.

  40. ir8oldman Says:

Picked up OG Henry Lutovsky 6’6′ 300 and LB Javin Wright 6’5″ 230 both out of Nebraska.

Might be really good camp meat with a chance to stick. You never know.

  41. adam from ny Says:

bucs signed him after all those beers they drank in the war room…

they got confused and thought for a moment he was jaden daniels…

honest mistake…these things happen…they will try to return him for a refund monday morning

  42. Rod Munch Says:

Much better than the typical training camp QBs the team gets, where the guy clearly has no chance to ever play in the NFL. While Daniels isn’t all that great at any particular thing, he’s also not really all that weak either. I wouldn’t be shocked if he makes the practice squad, and based on their college tape, I certainly like him more than Ballsack.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:
“Bucs coach UP a player of any kind, especially a qb??? Show us where that’s ever happened!!!”

It’s actually happened many times. Maybe not QB in a while though.

But…multiple RBs, OL guys, WRs, Secondary guys.

  44. ocalaBuc Says:

I bet Pyburn makes it, even if its just special teams
