Jason Licht Says Mission Accomplished On Securing “Nasty Pri*ks”
March 21st, 2026The Tampa Bay defense was pillowy soft last season.
Steps were taken to increase the defense’s toughness quotient, per Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.
Licht went there during his intimate no-cameras sitdown with Joe and three other media members Wednesday at One Buc Palace.
One question posed to Licht was about the free agent of signings of high-energy middle linebacker Alex Anzalone, angry defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson and hungry rags-to-riches edge rusher Al-Quadin Muhammed. Licht was asked if those guys, with combined 2026 salaries of over $20 million, will “change the demeanor” of the Bucs defense.
Licht didn’t acknowledge his defense resembled warm cinnamon rolls last season, but he did admit the Bucs were seeking nastier players.
“We’ve never said that we don’t want those kind of players, ok. (laughs),” Licht begain. “So, you know, we stressed high character, football character, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t want some nasty assholes when they get on the field.
“But when we had the chance to get guys like — [Alex] Anzalone is also [in that camp] — to get those kind of guys and the energy that they have, then we had A’Shawn [Robinson] and Al-Quan Muhammed in the building, it definitely raised the level of intensity.
“And it’s going to be a lot of fun, I think. Because they definitely are nasty, you know, pricks. So I’m looking forward to that. It was a bonus. We did, we have made a little bit of a concerted effort to try to find the the right blend of high character when it comes team, and being teammates and football character, but also edgy.”
These three signings won’t be making Pro Bowl reservations, but they are a lot edgier than the dudes they will replace: overmatched SirVocea Dennis, bland Logan Hall and check’s-in-the-bank edge rusher Haason Reddick.
Joe likes the moves.

May help Todd’s stoicism. Or is that sleepiness from the carbs?
March 21st, 2026 at 2:30 pm
Geez more hype. How about underpromise and overdeliver this time Jason?
I remain unconvinced until I see it on the field.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:33 pm
We wouldn’t have won the Super Bowl without Jensen, Suh, or JPP.
All warriors.
The NFL is war. Without a doubt.
Without warriors, on both sides of the ball, you have no chance at a Super Bowl.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:35 pm
Hopefully they will stay healthy all season and that attitude will rub off. If you don’t have it to begin with you can aquire it, some can’t. When you have players that played the way they did last year it would piss me off so bad there would have been borderline if not actual fights in the locker room. I love the story of how Sapp and Brooks watched ESPN and they ragged the Bucs and those 2 said “oh hell no”, and took it on themselves to change the demeanor of that D, stat’s wise when you compare them to all the other great D’s, one of the 2 best if not best in NFL history. Nickerson started it and we definitely need more of that guy thank you.

Somewhere, an aging, large gummed ice cream eater is clutching his Batman themed pearls.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:37 pm
That’s why I’m leaning more and more towards Licht draft a Guard
We need that mean, nasty, mauler guard, to play opposite Mauch
When Licht signed Feeney, l think it was for depth
But l think Licht will draft a Guard early
March 21st, 2026 at 2:38 pm
Well on my humble opinion they have a long ,long way to go. Yes these will help, but they are rotational players except the LB. However even there they need 2 more as good or hopefully even better with or without David. Then they need at least 1 starting corner to replace either McColumn or Morrison, heck maybe both. I don’t see either as starting corners. Then there is the edge rush. They did little. Yes they brought in another 1 year wonder at 31 and saying the guy is nasty?. Didn’t we hear that about Reddick last year?. The Bucs really wonder how they lost Evans. Well just look at their plan for next year thus far. I just don’t get whatever they are thinking sorry. Like Evans I have lost all faith.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:38 pm
shake oil salesman. keep your mouth shut and CONCENTRATE on drafting the best defensive players. not BPA idiot. you had better not draft sadiq or a wr in the 1st round or your job is in jeopardy. be smart, get mesidor,,then go after lb , dl, and cb. get rid of that stupid smirk on the face, put on your game face, and be SMART.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:38 pm
Upvote for no mention of Mike Evans or LVD for once. Also, is “pr**ck” not allowed? If you touch a cactus, do you pr**k yourself?
March 21st, 2026 at 2:44 pm
Jason lost Mike Evans. He didn’t lose Bowles. He can yammer about all the signings he wants. He has proven himself to be incompetent.
March 21st, 2026 at 2:54 pm
This was an A+ pickup.
Go Bucs !!
March 21st, 2026 at 2:54 pm
Yes Lakeland draft a guard 15th overall; only if can also rush the passer. He can rotate on both the offensive and defensive lines. (sarcasm)
March 21st, 2026 at 2:59 pm
Jason licht is started to sound like a broken record every year. These are the guys? Why does he set us up for Disappointment every year?
-David
March 21st, 2026 at 3:02 pm
Messidor is the answer take him in the first. And draft Rodriguez in the second. These are ball players. Guys who just flat out play
March 21st, 2026 at 3:05 pm
I think all 3 pick ups are solid and will contribute to an improved front 7.
It’s a good start 👍🏼
March 21st, 2026 at 3:06 pm
I’m not writing SVD off completely yet tho… Unlike Joe and company
He might be a great special teams player and an effective spot blitzer. –Joe
March 21st, 2026 at 3:21 pm
After Suh left the D hasn’t been the same. No matter what people said about Suh and some of the dirty plays he did, he really made a huge difference to the Bucs D. Those type of guys are exactly what the Bucs need on D and it sure would be nice to have one on the offense side since it only seems like Baker is closest thing to it. Need an Incognito on the O side of the ball.
March 21st, 2026 at 3:41 pm
I am from Missouri-Show Me
March 21st, 2026 at 3:48 pm
He’s laying the groundwork to draft offense with over hyping his masterful defensive signings.
Signing a bunch of old guys with attitude does not speak to a long term commitment to winning.
Betcha he drafts a QB in 1st/2nd round.
March 21st, 2026 at 3:59 pm
Last year they were quite adamant they wanted only players modeled in demeanor after LVD.
Quite the turnaround!
March 21st, 2026 at 4:01 pm
Hope he drafts for the same.
I don’t know about the players themselves but I like the 4 round mock Chad Reuter did on NFL. Targeted the positions I would like to see early.
Rd.1 – Caleb Banks (DT)
Rd.2 – CJ Allen (LB…pipe dream or LBs fall?)
Rd.3 – OLB (can’t remember name)
Rd.4 – CB I think…
Again, players might not be the right guys but positions will be nice and hopefully some hungry dawgs!
March 21st, 2026 at 4:23 pm
Mesidor will join Kancey in the tub and t-shirt on the sidelines crew. Please no. 1st round bust in the making. 15 is a tough place for us to pick unless someone falls. Weak for edge, ILB and corner. Hopefully someone wants to trade up for Sadiq and we can grab one of the big DL like MacDonald or Banks a little later plus an extra high pick.
March 21st, 2026 at 4:39 pm
I wonder what A’Shawn Robinson has on his vision board? Oh, he doesn’t have one? I bet Twinkle-Toes Morrison has enough Modge-Podge and glitter for him and the other FA acquisitions to remedy that. Hot glue gun party at Benji’s! BYOP (P is for poster board.)
Don’t go landing that fighter jet on the air craft carrier with the great big banner just yet, Mr. Licht. Don’t consider the attitude box checked and revert to the old habit of drafting defensive talents with undescended testicles. Seed the roster with these FAs and a similarly tempered draft class and let it infect the whole roster. Maybe even the coaching staff?
I want to see one of these additions or ideally, Mayfield, run that vision board of Morrison’s up the flag pole at One Buc Place. Help the kid figure out where he is in life and that his vision board is now the space between the white lines in the stadiums. Paint it up with the blood, sweat, snot, puke and tears of thine enemies. I’m weary of waiting for these young talents’ balls to drop, no one more than Morrison. I saw him own Marvin Harrison Jr.- body and soul three years ago. I know he has that dawg in him and so do a lot of guys on the roster.
Whether or not this trio is enough to precipitate meaningful change this reimagining of what a Buccaneer man is should not be throttled until opponents dread facing the Bucs like they did just a few years ago. That dread was not of Brady. It was of the ass-whooping you were guaranteed to get regardless of which side of the ball you lined-up. Jason Kelce has expressed many times, many ways what it was like for him and his peers around the league to win on a Sunday then get to the locker room and be crushed by the realization that next on the slate was the Bucs. It wasn’t an anxiety over losing. They could feel the hurt of next Sunday in your body a week in advance. Stop losing this kind of ground and stop being so quick to pat yourselves on the back, please and thank you.
March 21st, 2026 at 4:42 pm
All l hear is defense, defense, defense, fix the defense
But it was the offense that averaged 16.8 ppg during our last 7 games
And we went 2-5 in those games
And the weakness of this offense is the Offensive Line
I’m not saying draft 4-5 offensive players
But at some point, you have to draft offensive lineman
If not, you may end up searching for another QB
March 21st, 2026 at 4:51 pm
Hilarious. Hope1. Well done, sir.
March 21st, 2026 at 5:14 pm
Mission far from accomplished JL
Need atleast 3 more … at Edge, ILB, CB
To be as good or any better than we were last year.
March 21st, 2026 at 5:18 pm
14 or more “walk-thru” practices will take the nasty right out of them! LOL
March 21st, 2026 at 5:26 pm
@Lakeland: Were you here last year? The O-line was injured except the center. The starting 5 is one of the best in the league, they need a couple key veteran back ups (who know their lane) that aren’t going to expect to start but can do so for short periods of time. If you draft a guy high he will want to start and be paid to start or he will leave as a free agent.
March 21st, 2026 at 5:26 pm
Mauch was missed last season for his nastiness on the Oline. Felt like a different team without him. Hes going to have a lot of pent up aggression from not playing all season.
March 21st, 2026 at 5:37 pm
Last year at this time, Joe was promoting the view that the Vegas total of 9.5 was a lock and most posters were talking of 11-13 wins as more realistic. This year, the general consensus is that the current totals, Buccaneers 8.5 (-105) is a gift and Under is a lock. Strange given that Bowles has never won fewer than 8 and this team with the Buccaneers and the injury factor was so huge last year. Be that as it may, it is not hard to imagine 9-11 wins. Let’s face it, the offensive coordinator simply was not ready, the linebacking roster was critically underwhelming, the offensive line was less than mediocre, and Baker was playing injured for almost half the season. When somewhat healthy the Buccaneers beat the Seahawks and Texans on the road. Nothing is certain, but the roster sure looks like it will be improved. Don’t forget that prioir to the season nobody had Dean figured to be an all-pro.
March 21st, 2026 at 5:38 pm
I really think our defense needed some junk yard dogs. Mean, tough, nasty guys that enjoy the toughness and physicallity of the game. Guys that will bring that to the field on gameday. When you play defense you need to have a different mindset then the average football player. Sounds like these guys have ‘it.’
March 21st, 2026 at 5:46 pm
Jason…go way. He Bozo
March 21st, 2026 at 6:06 pm
Jason, Todd & #6! Please leave……Go Away, Fae Away!!!!
March 21st, 2026 at 6:30 pm
Anthony,
So you hope the Bucs run it back with guys like Feeney, Chukwuma, Klien as your depth. And also there’s no guarantees they won’t get injured again. And then Deja Vu all over again.
March 21st, 2026 at 6:31 pm
Let me see the offense struggled as well as Baker. Could it be we were playing with 3rd string guards, both tackles missed time and injuries with other positions? Maybe that’s reason the offense struggled??
The old adage, don’t call for someone’s job unless you have a better replacement!
March 21st, 2026 at 6:38 pm
Right now the Bucs offensive lineman are:
LT Tristan Wirfs
RT Luke Goedeke
C Ghraham Barton
LG Ben Brederson
RG Cody Mauch
Reserves
Luke Haggard
Elijah Klien
Dan Feeney
Ben Scott
Ben Chukwuma
That’s what they have right now
And it ain’t much to say the least
March 21st, 2026 at 6:41 pm
What now,JL? Three guys and you can go back to sleep? Scan the waiver line after the draft each hour on the hour.
March 21st, 2026 at 6:43 pm
I guess this Joe is POed at me. What’s wrong with above post?
Guess this commenter has zero patience.–Joe

March 21st, 2026 at 6:51 pm
A nasty a**hole sounds AWFUL.
March 21st, 2026 at 6:57 pm
Take Mesidor then Anthony Hill Jr. or Rodriguez in that order of preference. Can only take a 4.3 speed TE if he happens to still be available in the 3rd round, lol.
March 21st, 2026 at 6:58 pm
Josh Allen was literally, walking on CRUTCHES the very next day after the season had just ended. And, I don’t remember ANYONE making any EXCUSES for him saying that HE was “injured.” They’re ALL banged TF UP by the time the season is half over. If you’re out there, then this whole “injury” BS in nothing other than just an EXCUSE. Period. End of Story. YOU don’t make up EXCUSES for anyone else. But with Baker, there is ALWAYS this phantom injury. Hmmmm… I see.
March 21st, 2026 at 7:02 pm
In all seriousness though, Sadiq is a unicorn at that size and speed. Could be the greatest tight end to ever strap on a helmet if he meets his potential. Nearly impossible to cover. Imagine Mike Evans with quite a bit more size and speed.
Yeesh!
March 21st, 2026 at 7:12 pm
****Meant Graham Barton
But if Licht and Bowles go into the 2026 season relying on those reserves on the offensive line. It would be a disaster, offensive linemen don’t play full seasons.
Also, the reason why this line was so great on paper in 2025
Was because of Liam Coen “” Dink and Dine ” offense
As soon as Bowles promoted Josh Grizzard
His very first words…we need to attack more. .push the ball down field
I knew then we were in for a long season
March 21st, 2026 at 7:14 pm
****Meant Dink and Dunk offense
March 21st, 2026 at 7:20 pm
@Lakeland: good vets will be available for backups after roster cut downs.
March 21st, 2026 at 7:30 pm
This team sounds like a 1975 Chevy Vega with an add-on 8-track player and home tinting.
March 21st, 2026 at 7:31 pm
What’s wrong with 8 track?
March 21st, 2026 at 7:54 pm
Am I the only one that believes we would be far better suited with drafting a center and moving Barton to guard. Barton played his best football kicking out to LG. Wirfs and Barton could move mountains.
March 21st, 2026 at 8:00 pm
Barton moved out to left tackle to fill in for Wirfs when he was injured.
March 21st, 2026 at 8:04 pm
Our offensive line is perfect as-is. We just need them healthy. Why mess with excellence? It was a winning formula 2 years ago when they were all playing and will be again. Need a better backup, but not drafted higher than the 4th round or better yet signed in free agency (a vet).

shake oil salesman. keep your mouth shut and CONCENTRATE on drafting the best defensive players. not BPA idiot. you had better not draft sadiq or a wr in the 1st round or your job is in jeopardy
Wow, hard to tell you’re from Boston. You don’t sound like a Masshole at all.
“Licht was asked if those guys, with combined 2026 salaries of over $20 million, will “change the demeanor” of the Bucs defense.”
He wasn’t bragging about his free agent signings, he was just answering a question. And you sound pretty demanding. I’m sure Licht will listen to you since you’re scary and he knows you’ll do something drastic if he decides to draft a TE or WR so in fear for his life, he definitely won’t.
March 21st, 2026 at 8:55 pm
The things a read in here are pure comedy.
“The oline is a weakness”…the oline is strength of the team. Im all for adding a quality guard and making it even stronger, but to call it a weakness is a total joke.
“Sadiq could be the greatest TE to ever strap on a helmet”…seriously? Guy is an athletic freak, but please stop with the greatest TE talk. He had 51 catches and averaged 11 yards a catch. And btw, he’s 2 inches shorter than Evans.
Keep the humdingers coming..laughter is the best medicine.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:04 pm
The offense line account for 18.3 % of all NFL injuries
If you think Feeney, Haggard, Scott, Chukwuma, Klien is a strength
There’s nothing more k can say to you
Because those reserves offensive linemen will be playing
March 21st, 2026 at 9:09 pm
I said it last year when they tried to patch up a line
I say it this year
You cannot patch up a offensive line
If you don’t have quality reserves on the line
It’s a weakness…… Because your starters will miss time
Last season should be an education
March 21st, 2026 at 9:28 pm
With his vertical, he’s taller than Evans. And heavier. And faster. If he keeps developing as a Tight End there’s no physical limit to what he can do. His athleticism is insane, and the position players that normally cover TE’s will not be able to keep up with him. It doesn’t mean he will be the best, but there’s certainly plenty of potential of him blowing by linebackers and safeties for walk in scores WEEKLY.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:30 pm
Lakeland, I have a hunch Chukwuma will emerge as a strength and possibly a future starter. Can’t say much about the others.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:39 pm
Also, size doesn’t just mean height.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:44 pm
That’s the biggest problem with these NFL General Managers
They can only see what’s on the surface
They spend, spend on starters, and say it’s a strength
And they ignore the reserves, so they are lacking depth
When the injuries occur, they scramble and try to find replacements
Robbing other teams practice squads, signing players off the street
Trying to get by off a patch up job, it’s impossible
You need quality reserves ready to step in and play
Reserves ready to hit the field running
If you don’t have quality depth, you don’t have a COMPLETE football team
That’s exactly why l kept mention Question Marks last season
The Bucs had way too many question marks, more than an episode of Jeopardy
March 21st, 2026 at 9:49 pm
Lakeland- Chukwuma is a strength and I’m excited to see more of him on the field but other than that yes, the Bucs need quality depth behind their once great but now hobbled OL. Wirfs degenerated knee is a thing. Mauch could be as done as Cappa. Reassurances that everyone will be ready to rock by week one from a team that said the same thing last year then, surprise! dropped their center in at LT last second to start the 2025 campaign aren’t terribly reassuring.
Wyatt Teller is probably the most realistic quality FA to bring in as Mauch insurance but I’d spend a little more on Greg Van Roten or Joel Bitonio who are still rock solid. If the Bucs want to get nuts about upgrading at OG Kevin Zeitler is the way to go and he is available as well.
One of these FAs and a day 3 guy in the draft will be ample reinforcement to this OL that likely won’t be what it was in 2024. All the guys I listed in my above post are extra large, long arms, big hands and RAS scores that will spin your head. The difference between one of them and Ioane is not worth a first round pick.
I had the biggest crush on Quentin Nelson years ago and I get where you are coming from but Ioane isn’t him. Ioane win a Super Bowl by harvesting the bounty of pass rush talent at the top of the draft- not draft a HOF OG and stay upper-mediocre. Licht has overindulged his OL fetish enough as it is. Barton was a dumb reach in my book. To each their own though.
I’m hoping more guys run the short shuttle at their pro days. 4.47 is the magic number. Every draft pick that ran that time or faster has started 80% of the games possible in their career. No one at the combine ran better than 4.56 though.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:53 pm
I agree there somewhat, Lakeland. What the team needs to aim for is to stop employing backups the coach would wince if they had to play. Like the 90% drop in skill level from the starter types. And O-line is hugely important to have good backups. So is D-line and secondary. All are position groups opponents will take major advantage of if there’s a weakness anywhere. Still, we have great starters on our O-line and cannot keep spending huge draft capital there. We have to find suitable, startable backups.
March 21st, 2026 at 9:59 pm
3 28 Evans, Bowles is here because the Glazers want him here. Licht might go to the Glazers with suggestions and opinions but don’t think for a second that the owners don’t have final say on the head coach.
March 21st, 2026 at 10:05 pm
At this point players coming to Tampa are collecting a check not a superbowl.
March 21st, 2026 at 10:19 pm
Regardless, l still think we win the NFC South
And just maybe, we might even win a few playoffs games
It all depends on the injuries, that’s where we’re at
March 21st, 2026 at 10:25 pm
Bruce Arians is the only reason Bowles is still here
March 22nd, 2026 at 12:23 am
Need a nasty @@@@@ Edge Rd 1
March 22nd, 2026 at 2:45 am
“That’s why I’m leaning more and more towards Licht draft a Guard
We need that mean, nasty, mauler guard, to play opposite Mauch”
@Lakeland, thats why im pushing Ioane so hard. I pushed Landon Dickerson when we went with JTS. Im not the best at prospect scouting….but I pushed for big V, Wirfs, D White (who was instrumental in winning the last SB), Winfield, Marpet, Godwin, shoot, ive lost count now how many Ive pushed and we got them and they turned out great. And yes, ive missed on a few, (Howard, Hall, Braswell)….They got Elijah Roberts too who I also pushed for last year for later rounds.
But anyways, this was a great signing by Jason…we needed another big body in the middle of that D. But I’d still like Lee Hunter if we can get him in the 3rd or 4th.
Many downplay the importance for QB protection, but not me. For value of pick where the need crosses each other, I see Ioane. Not popular, I know…but especially if we can trade down a spot or two and still get him…that will be a huge help. Just have to worry about the Ravens snatching him the pick before us. We have bu’s on O line with Bredeson and Mauch imo, unless Mauch is good to go and back to his former self at RG…Vega is READY to go at LG immediately!
March 22nd, 2026 at 4:02 am
One thing about JL is sure knows how to pat himself on the back. “Mission accomplished”? Really? Sorry, a bit jaded from year in, year out braggadocio. Not falling for it again. It’s a prove it year for JL & TB. We’ll see. Remember, JL, your defense has a lot of holes at Edge and back end. If you’re ‘hope’ is Morrison and McCollum, then, let’s just take pass on this season. Your depth is non-existent on Oline, Dline, LB, DB.
March 22nd, 2026 at 7:40 am
Licht is full of himself if this is it for the FA haul.
March 22nd, 2026 at 8:19 am
Bucs restructured 2 guys, had $51 million in funds, spent nearly every dime of it. HOW do you think they’re gonna sign more people?
March 22nd, 2026 at 11:16 am
LakelandSteve, agree with you. But Jason felt the same way as the Glazers. A real GM would’ve made the compelling case for Tood’s firing, with all the data available. A real GM would’ve gotten ownership to agree and we’d have a new coach now and some hope.
We don’t and we don’t.
March 22nd, 2026 at 11:44 am
Beej-
The Bucs take their understanding of inflation, optionality and the long-term projection of the NFL’s finances and apply it over the coming years to exploit void year acceleratio, rollover cap and cash spending over the cap. Additionally all new signing will be for the league minimum but receive their compensation in the form of option and roster bonuses
Extend Mayfield and Vea and restructure or trade Winfield Jr. Doing all this opens up $70 mil in room to play. There is no cap let alone cap hell. Trust between GM and management is paramount as the Glazers will have to be fronting a lot of cash. It’s not difficult to manage despite what the Saints ever-compounding mismanagement could lead us to believe.

Lakeland, you’re exactly correct. An injury plagued line along with a change to a vertical offense killed us. Now with Zac in as OC and M1K3 gone, we can switch more to a west coast scheme. Baker’s strength is short to intermediate anyways. We have three #2 receivers to distribute the ball to evenly.
