Irreplaceable Advantage For Baker Mayfield
February 4th, 2026Joe hates quoting one of the great enemies of the Buccaneers, but the future Hall of Famer is a heck of a talker and he will be highly visible in the media for decades to come.
His name is Cam Jordan, the eight-time Pro Bowl edge rusher the Bucs didn’t draft because he talked too much.
Jordan, who has yet to retire after the slimy Saints drafted him in 2011, is cruising around Radio Row at the Super Bowl today pitching a football helmet and talking about the Saints and his 10 1/2-sack 2025 season at 36 years old.
During a lecture on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Jordan noted that quarterbacks get better with age — and too many in the NFL don’t understand that.
“When it comes to the quarterback position, we are so fast to label a quarterback the next superstar or the next bust, when in the quarterback position, your best weapon is experience,” Jordan said.
That got Joe thinking about Baker Mayfield, who has eight NFL seasons under his belt playing for a different offensive coordinator every year. Mayfield also played four college seasons under multiple head coaches and systems.
In the NFC, only three starting quarterbacks are older than Mayfield, who turns 31 in April. They are Jared Goff (31), Dak Prescott (32) and Matt Stafford (38). And all three of those guys had exceptional 2025 seasons statistically. (While drafted with Mayfield in 2018, Super Bowl QB Sam Darnold is two years younger than Mayfield.)
Joe wonders if Mayfield’s experience is an attractor for the Bucs. The team likely views Mayfield, whose contracts expires after next season, as a quarterback on the rise with at least four seasons in his prime ahead.

February 4th, 2026 at 2:47 pm
What a stretch. Baker is going to be the wise old man now? Prescott has no NFC championship appearances. Goff lost his shot at a title. Stafford is probably retiring.
People get shorter with age too, so that won’t help Baker.
What exactly is Joe stretching? The Bucs may view Baker through this lens. Those three quarterbacks all had strong seasons, plus Darnold.–Joe
February 4th, 2026 at 2:49 pm
Will be ludicrous to let him go unless the Bucs end up with a top 5 pick in 2027 somehow.
Who do you replace him with if you don’t have a very high pick?
If the Bucs want 4-5 more good years outta him though, he’s gotta stop lowering the shoulder and taking so much contact.
February 4th, 2026 at 2:56 pm
“Joe wonders if Mayfield’s experience is an attractor for the Bucs. The team likely views Mayfield, whose contracts expires after next season, as a quarterback on the rise with at least four seasons in his prime ahead of him.”
Why beat a dead horse and ask how that experience helped as the team lost 5 out of 7 games after the bye? Thats low hanging fruit. Let’s say he was injured, even though he said he wasn’t, wouldn’t experience teach him that he plays terribly when hurt?
Here’s another quick question, what does a prime season for Baker look like specifically? 45+ TDs? NFC Championship? SB game? So you think he’ll have 4 straight seasons of doing something he’s never done before? Lol…are you betting money on that?
My god man you Baker fans, I mean, A for effort really. The fact that no team is rushing to lock him in for a multi year deal, including the Bucs, tells you all you need to know. There’s way too much risk in paying $100+ million for 2+ years to an injury prone QB no matter what his name is.
February 4th, 2026 at 3:03 pm
Give the man some blocking. And a running game.
February 4th, 2026 at 3:13 pm
These old QBS are only as good as the players around them
They can’t carry a team on their backs
They need a strong run game, good receivers, pass protection
And they need a solid defense to cover their turnovers , mistakes
Experience can’t replace old legs, broken down body
Get some players on this team that ACTUALLY want to play football
Some players capable of performing at a high level
And the rest will fall in place
February 4th, 2026 at 3:23 pm
Cams right, generally speaking.
I’m hoping Baker has his best year yet. I’m looking at last year as a throwaway due to Grizz. Let’s see what he can do with an OC that’s got experience and an actual plan to attack defenses and utilize our weapons.
February 4th, 2026 at 3:24 pm
“People get shorter with age too, so that won’t help Baker.”
LMAO 🤣😭
February 4th, 2026 at 3:29 pm
2026 is the year that Mayfield buries the entire Munch Bunch. Don’t think Baker can do much to fix a worthless defense but he will elevate the offense so long as he doesn’t get beaten up like he did playing behind 3rd string guards in 2025. Really hoping that Baker becomes a FA at the end of 2026. Can hear the dummies in the Munch Bunch now, “Licht should have signed the Baker to a 5 year $250Mill deal. We love Baker, and so it will go…..”
February 4th, 2026 at 3:31 pm
LMAO!!!!!
The Funny Bone opens at 7pm Joe!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!
February 4th, 2026 at 3:31 pm
And one more thing……I trust CG14 and ME13 views of Baker Mayfield more than the clowns who post here.
February 4th, 2026 at 3:40 pm
It’s a throwaway due to INJURED GUARDS. And everyone else that was injured. Our backup guards were *terrible* turnstiles in pass protection. That cost us 5/7 games at the end of the season. We need very good depth at offensive line, defensive line, and secondary. Any missing players in all three position groups are easily targeted by coordinators! Any other position (other than qb) needs at least functional depth with effort. And our starters on the front 7 in our defense need improvement and more depth too. Vea shouldn’t be playing like 700 snaps!
February 4th, 2026 at 3:48 pm
And now is the best time to sign Baker long term. We should absolutely do it.
February 4th, 2026 at 3:56 pm
Baker is great but he needs the right environment and Grizzard obviously didn’t create that. I’m cautiously optimistic for next season.
February 4th, 2026 at 4:19 pm
The Jameis bois are still pissed he got run. They disappeared for a while and now they’re back.
February 4th, 2026 at 4:31 pm
Joe… this one is scraping the bottom of the bucket…
February 4th, 2026 at 5:32 pm
Four more prime years? Not the way he plays at his size. Maybe a three deal, with a team option for the 4th year. But pay him like the bridge QB he is. Draft his successor next year, and let him sit under Baker for a year.
February 4th, 2026 at 5:52 pm
I think these Baker Mayfield fans think we hope he plays bad and that’s not true were tired of the excuses y’all give Baker Mayfield. If the bucs resign him they’re going to set this team back. He haven’t proven you can even get to the NFC Championship and we supposed to be all in. On Baker Mayfield ? He was 75 percent of the reason for the 2-7 record at the end of the year.
February 4th, 2026 at 5:53 pm
Hodad. I say draft Drew Aluar in the 3rd round he will be there so we don’t have to thank
February 4th, 2026 at 5:54 pm
We don’t have to tank a season.
February 4th, 2026 at 6:12 pm
“. On Baker Mayfield ? He was 75 percent of the reason for the 2-7 record at the end of the year.”
Conversely he was 100% of the reason we got to 6 and 2
February 4th, 2026 at 6:18 pm
Getting shorter with age comes in later years. You know as you approach geezerhood. Baker has nothing to worry about quite yet. He is as short as he is gonna get for a while.😁
February 4th, 2026 at 6:31 pm
Where would the BAKER HATERS run and hide if the Bucs were to win the division in 2026 but lose in the conference championship game? Since most of them suffer from tunnel vision, their words “same old Baker” and joker and a choker would resonate the airwaves!
February 4th, 2026 at 6:36 pm
NO Jo…Nope….NOJO it is not gonna happen.
February 4th, 2026 at 7:12 pm
“Conversely he was 100% of the reason we got to 6 and 2“
How many TDs was he responsible for in our 6th win?
February 4th, 2026 at 8:14 pm
Bake may still be ascending as a NFL QB…But will the Bucs be of the mindset to sign him to a new deal after this season??
He will command at minimum $53M in 2027 coin…That number likely jumps to at least $60M over a 4yr extension. (4yrs – $225M).
I’m not so sure that signing any QB to that kind of deal makes sense…Not if it cripples your ability to build a quality roster around him.
Both time the Bucs have won a SB, they have had experienced QB’s that did not break the bank. Johnson was on a sweetheart deal (5yrs – $28M) & Brady was too (2yrs – $50M – taking much less than he could have pressed the Glazers for)…If Bake costs Tampa over $50M a year…They will not get back to the SB during his tenure.
February 4th, 2026 at 9:03 pm
It’s almost a waste of time trying to get you Baker haters to understand even the most simple concepts about a game and those that play it but I’m retired so what the heck. Bee says “so you really expect BM6 to do something he’s never done before”? Oh I don’t know Bee…in one year with a quality OC he led the league in all the important metrics for a quarterback. Was rated #1 this season for almost half the year. So just spitballing here, I wonder what he could do if he had Coen for 4 straight years, become aquanted with his system and know it inside out, you know kind of like 90% of the great quarterbacks get in their career but Baker has never had. He has had 10 OC’s in his 8 years. No quarterback has ever went through that before. And if you think that doesn’t matter then you really never have played the game. Having the right duo of quarterback and coach like Brady & Bill B. or Mahomes & Andy Reid. It takes both to be great and Baker has been the unfortunate one since being drafted in 2018. So to answer your question. Yes with the right coach, Baker could do things like lead the league in all the important stats that have to do with running a highly efficient offense like running and converting 3rd downs, throwing the most TD’s having the highest completion percentage, having the best passer rating in regular season and playoffs. Oh wait he’s already done that. The only thing he needs to do is maintain his level of play year after year and IF he could keep the same coach like almost all quarterbacks in the NFL do for multiple years and learn the system, yes he would work magic for us.
February 4th, 2026 at 9:39 pm
Not so fast
What is the simple concept I cant understand? You said Baker has had 10 OCs in 8 years and no other QB has gone through that. That’s where you’re wrong. Jalen Hurts has had 11 OCs including college and NFL with a different OC every year of his professional career. Hasn’t seemed to effect him much since hes been able to go to 2 Superbowls and win one. So thats not a good excuse for Baker. Yall keep saying hes this great QB but the guy getting paid $30+ million per year can’t learn a new offense? Hmmm…
Baker had Sean McVay, he’s not a good coach? Baker had his best season under Coen, so tell me, how did he do in the PLAYOFFS? Could he score over 20 pts after averaging 30 ppg during the season? Nope.
I don’t hate Baker. Based of his continuous underperformace season after season on every team hes on, I dont think hes the long term answer to take the Bucs to the Superbowl. And since hes one the last year of his deal, the Bucs don’t think so either.
February 4th, 2026 at 10:29 pm
Ok Oneilbuc the Bucs have been to four total nfc championships in franchise history. That’s it. Saying we can’t re-sign him unless we make it to that game is absurd.
February 4th, 2026 at 10:32 pm
Whatever Bee said,, I’m the opposite ,,, Sign Baker to a 3 year extension 40 million a year ,,, will look cheap in three years ,, especially w three SB trophy’s in our lobby
February 5th, 2026 at 12:51 am
Bee why are you stretching the truth. Jalen has had 5 OC’s in the NFL to Bakers 10. Quite a difference. I stand behind my statement that NO OTHER QUARTERBACK has ever had to deal with that. McVay doesn’t even count. He was there 5 whole games!!! The team was the walking dead they had so many injuries. The 2 superbowl thing…that’s what happens when you have a 1-a good coach, 2-a good team and 3-a good quarterback. We have a good quarterback. That’s 1 of 3 huh? I can’t understand why we haven’t won 5 superbowls with all we have going on. Our coach ranks in the bottom of the bottom 30%. Our defense ranked 20th this year. As I said we have 1 of the 3, that’s great it has to be our quarterbacks fault. With the right play calling and a healthy OL Baker will be back in the top 5 AGAIN, maybe back to #1 AGAIN.
February 5th, 2026 at 1:03 am
The simple concept that you fail to comprehend Bee is, some quarterbacks are given everything to succeed while some have to fight for everything only because they were the best coming out of college and get stuck on the worst team in NFL history 1-31, remember. Remember the 1, 2, 3 thing, Cleveland had 1 of the 3 also but Baker still took them to a divisional game that they actually won so Baker always elevates his team. Just like he did his first year here. Everyone agreed we would win 4 games after Brady. Baker came and we won 9 and went to the playoffs. He is a stud quarterback who like all quarterbacks needs to have certain things to be successful and Baker hasn’t had much of that but it hasn’t kept him from elevating those around him. The powers that be know what they have at quarterback, thank goodness
February 5th, 2026 at 9:24 am
I am so damn over you whining, disgruntled Ohio State loving, Baker hating people. You have the privilege of having one of the greatest competitors in football history play for our BUCS. Appreciate what you have, and learn something about football before you make ridiculous comments that show everybody your lack of football knowledge. I am talking to you oneilbuc and bee. Suck it up. If you aren’t a Baker Mayfield fan, your aren’t a Bucs fan. He is our QB and he is the leader of our team. Stand by him, or STFU.
February 5th, 2026 at 10:21 am
“You have the privilege of having one of the greatest competitors in football history play for our BUCS”
🤣🤣
February 5th, 2026 at 10:28 am
Becky when you speak truth these haters hear nothing. They don’t recognize it, so they put up a laughing emoji in response. It Flys right over their midget brains.
February 5th, 2026 at 11:08 am
@lakeland, Then why has Baker been carrying the team since he’s been here??
February 5th, 2026 at 11:23 am
“Becky when you speak truth these haters hear nothing. They don’t recognize it, so they put up a laughing emoji in response. It Flys right over their midget brains.”
-deep gasp ala Eddie Murphy-
🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
So inflammed by the opinions of others, because it clearly challenges your own and that makes you made. Toughen up buttercup.
February 5th, 2026 at 2:16 pm
Let’s trade for Dak Prescott.. He gets to the playoffs, Nfc Championship, and super bowl every year….Or does he? The question for the anti Bakers is are you for benching or firing dak because his playoff record is worse than Bakers and his cap hit is twice,as much? Baker is a good deal for the money and allows you to pay other guys. He needed a good backup so he can take games off to heal like San Francisco does.
February 5th, 2026 at 2:18 pm
Beckys theme song is,Stand by your Man by Tammy Wynette..
February 5th, 2026 at 3:39 pm
there is a long learning curve in professional sports, more so with key positions like QB, I very much like Baker +8 years experience with a strong supporting line and run game
February 5th, 2026 at 4:48 pm
Warren Brooks Lynch like I said in my comment, you baker haters are either crybaby Ohio State fans or know nothings. In your case I think it’s both. Emojis, really dude. I am a girl and I don’t use them.
February 5th, 2026 at 4:57 pm
Warren Brooks Lynch just saw your first comment to me where you were laughing because I said Baker is one of the greatest competitors in football history. You obviously don’t know the difference between greatest players and greatest competitors. So I guess I was right when I said you are a know nothing and I still bet you don’t like baker because you are an Ohio State fan since you had nothing to say about it.
February 5th, 2026 at 6:16 pm
How exactly does one go about gauging competitiveness from player to player, to say one player in unequivocally more competitive than every player that has come through the NFL?
Without romanticization or just outright embellishement?
No ties to Ohio State, but you know what they say about assumptions.
February 5th, 2026 at 11:31 pm
Truthfully I thought Baker was way off his game after taking too many hard hits in the first half of the season. He scrambled too much and took too many hard hits. The best qbs with long careers are good at getting rid of the ball as quick as possible and dumping the ball when pass protection breaks down. Baker takes way too many hard hits. Let me say it again. Baker takes way too many hard hits!!!
February 5th, 2026 at 11:49 pm
WBLoser says those that like Baker get mad and are buttercups but you know what’s funny? He is so mad he refuses to use our names when addressing one of our comments. Hilarious
Like that is suppose to hurt. LMAO at WBLoser
February 5th, 2026 at 11:51 pm
Not my NFL said it all, “then why has Baker been carrying the team since he’s been here”? End of story
February 6th, 2026 at 7:06 am
Oh look Warren Brooks Lynch didn’t use emojis in his last remarks to me that he wasn’t man enough to address to me. What happened buttercup?
February 6th, 2026 at 10:44 pm
Weeb10. Yep it’s been 4 years and Baker hasn’t lead this team to anything yet so yes no NFC Championship no contract for him or Bowles.
