Mark Dominik Explains Why He Passed On Cameron Jordan In The NFL Draft

April 10th, 2023

Hated Saints DE Cameron Jordan.

This one will send Joe to the Big Storm Brewery taproom in Ybor City when it opens today.

Joe will be the guy crying in his Wavemaker Amber Ale and inhaling chicken nachos and onion rings.

It’s become clear to Joe that former Bucs general manager Mark Dominik listened to too much Run-DMC back in the mid-1980s. After Dominik’s incredible share on SiriusXM NFL Radio last week, Joe can’t come up with another explanation as to why Dominik didn’t draft future Hall of Fame edge rusher Cameron Jordan in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Dominik was asked to detail a player he didn’t draft because of how the player interviewed and then the guy went on to greatness.

The pain in Dominik’s voice came through the airwaves as he acknowledged that Jordan (115 1/2 sacks) was a historic miss by Tampa Bay.

But why Jordan wasn’t Dominik’s draft pick is what has Joe in a state of disbelief. Dominik loved Jordan’s film and thought he was a great guy. But Dominik said Jordan talked so much when the two met, that he thought Jordan might be a bad fit around the young studs in the Bucs’ locker room: Josh Freeman, Mike Williams, LeGarrette Blount, Gerald McCoy, Aqib Talib and more.

That’s right. The Bucs didn’t select Jordan because he talked too much.

The Bucs wanted an edge rusher and Iowa’s Adrian Clayborn is who they instead drafted at No. 20 overall.

A Bucs area scout was in love with Jordan and the Bucs really loved Jordan’s film, Dominik said. But, per Dominik, the Bucs didn’t pick Jordan because he might have been too big of a presence.

“As I met him and as we talked about him, [our area scout] loved [Jordan] out of Cal, you know, powerful left end. And the question was, you know, ‘How is he going to fit in the locker room with a young team?’ Is it going to be too much, it it going to be too overbearing, that kind of thought,” Dominik said.

“And I just wasn’t sure. And so because [Jordan] talked and talked and talked, you were like, “I just don’t know about the fit in the locker room with him.

“…We leaned toward Clayborn in terms of the toughness and some of the stuff that we saw, but I’d be lying if I said [Jordan’s talking] didn’t play into it in my mind a little bit.”

Dominik said he and Jordan have a good relationship today and Jordan always reminds him of how he screwed up.

“I overthought it. [The Bucs] organization, we over thought it,” Dominik said of passing on Jordan.

And so goes another chapter in Bucs history. Ironic to Joe is that if Jordan talked that much, then he surely would have returned his incorrect dinner order at One Buc Palace.

Great fun ahead at the brand new Big Storm taproom in the heart of Ybor City! Upstairs in Centro Ybor with public parking all around. It’s big, bold and beautiful.

Explains why Jordan hates the Bucs and why Dom is not in the NFL anymore. Investigating then not drafting a dude due to being loud and sure of his abilities is a disgrace to the organization; But go ahead and take josh freeman

  3. miken Says:

    Just Brutal

  4. BA’s Red Pen Says:

    F Cam Jordan

  5. Rosadog Says:

    Dominic = Moron !!!!!

Over thinking is the death of front office exec. around the league.

    Keep it simple.

    See man… beat man!

    See ball…get ball!

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

Damn. I don’t think I would have shared that!

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

Dumpsternik: “I passed on him because I’m an idiot and was pretending I knew what I was doing. Other great moves were trading up for Josh Freeman, trading premium picks and paying $16 million a year (in 2013) for Revis when the Jets were going to cut him and he needed to rehab a knee — and my favorite, letting Michael Bennett walk because DuhQuan Bowers was ready to roll.”

  8. Dooley Says:

Again, Mark Dominik was over-employed as Bucs GM, good grief this is another ridiculous, but true story.

  9. Jason Says:

But I thought Dominic was a Rock Star General Manager?

  10. rrsrq Says:

So another thing that doomed Rah, can you imagine Michael Bennett, Aqib Talib and Cam Jordan in the locker room on defense Ed by trash talking Rah. Oh yeah and GMC cheesing the whole time.

  11. Goatfarmer Says:

    Mark “28-52” Dumbassnik

  12. Mr. Editor Says:

He “overthought” it? That’s not the word for it, but it explains why the pop star ex-GM Mark Dominik loved Schiano so much. Those two were a match made in…it’s not heaven.

  13. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Loud and boisterous didn’t seem to upset green college team mates. Very sad admission.

  14. zzbucs Says:

I hate Cameron big mouth jordan with all my heart, But Dominik is not to way behind……One of the worst if not the worst GM we had in our short history

  15. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

How did Mark Dominik ever get a job in scouting? He’s a real honest guy for admitting to this, but my God he is a total moron.

  16. AtlBuc Says:

    |Ironic to Joe is that if Jordan talked that much, then he surely would have returned his incorrect dinner order at One Buc Palace.|

Joe: Cam would have returned the food for sure but he would have spent the next two hours talking to the kitchen staff about how it should have been cooked and no one else would have gotten fed!!

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Dominick also got rid of Michael Bennett for no good reason…..what an idiot

  18. lambchop Says:

Do we really need more reason to bury our memory of Dumbinik? I mean who wants to listen to this guy? Ever.

  19. LOL Says:

    What a DUMBA$$

    LOL

  20. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

No wonder we sucked….talked too much haAAAAA

  21. Bobby M. Says:

Instead we went with a dude who’s arm/shoulder had known physical limitations. Dominick was in over his head….good cap guy but terrible GM.

  22. Kwame Richardson Says:

Thank you,Joes for finally answering this matter that has puzzled me for many years now. Never understood the move from draft night until this morning. Thanks again. Go Bucs.

  23. Cobraboy Says:

    OK.

Back in The Day, I quit dating an 8+ because she talked too much and didn’t listen.

If you asked her what time it was, she explained the theory of time.

She became a lawyer and worked with Obama at the Harvard Law Review, so maybe somebody sat her down to tell her to shut her pie hole.

    No regrets.

She should have removed the cotton from her ears and put it in her mouth.

I doubt she could rush a QB like Jordan, though. Plus, I don’t like that dumb hat.

If Jordan gets a HoF nod and Simeon Rice does not, there is no football justice.

  24. Goatfarmer Says:

    Cobra — great story, man! I LOL’d.

  25. Hodad Says:

Article should be, why Dominick is unimployed!

  26. Tim Says:

    …….AND that’s why you’re a talking head now instead of a GM.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Dumbassnik babbles on a show on NFL radio. He is just about unlistenable. Sounds like a regular dude with a stutter. A regular dude with a stutter who failed spectacularly as a GM, and I can’t believe he’ll be long for the broadcast world either.

  28. kgh4life Says:

This only shows you that some people should not be GM’s in the NFL. Look at Bruce Allen. Everywhere he has been his record has been mediocre.

  29. BucfaninMi Says:

    That was dumb

  30. gotbbucs Says:

You can’t manipulate a football locker room like that. The locker room polices itself. The loud guys and quiet guys always separate themselves after games and practice, on the field football takes over and none of that other stuff matters.

Dominik was looking for boy scouts instead of football players. Dominiks draft targets were always easy to pick out leading up to the draft.

  31. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Just one of many mistakes made by Mark Dominik.

  32. Who Says Says Can't Say Says:

Boy he really was just about the worst general manager ever.

  33. Marine Buc Says:

No wonder Dominik has never ever ever been hired in the NFL…

    Not as a scout.

    Not as a GM.

Not as a salary cap accountant.

Not even as a secretary (which is where he belongs).

Dominik is lucky Matt Millen was an NFL GM or else he would be remembered as the worst GM in NFL history.

Remember his brilliant plan to “build around #5”? What a joke…

  34. 97 bucBaby Says:

Mark was a horrible GM who doesn’t know talent as you see he has never been hired for that position again. Hated that man horrible at evaluating talent

  35. ItzOK Says:

worst GM in history. How this guy even has a job on radio talking about the nfl is beyond me. Whatever this guy says something do the opposite.

  36. Pickgrin Says:

    Dummynik!

Drafted exactly 2 good players in 5 years. LD54 and Gholston. McCoy doesn’t even count as that #3 overall pick was a given – that Geraldini would be the next player off the board after Suh….

  37. JBBUCS_06 Says:

If I were Mark D, I would NOT have admitted that. Just plain stupid X2

  38. unbelievable Says:

    Dusthty nailed it!

  39. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Licht wants Type A personalities. Dom does not. Licht has a ring. Dom does not.

  40. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Rockstar?

  41. RuKa_44 Says:

My respect for Jason Licht just increased substantially… Imagine having to clean the mess Mark “moron” Dominick left behind…. God grief!!

  42. AnonymousBuc76 Says:

    Makes 0 sense…

Worried about bringing a talkative cocky rookie into a young locker room Wow!…
So you drafted a 1 armed DE in the first round instead…smh

  43. Leopold Stotch Says:

Draft Guru punching the air rn. Good grief what an idiot.

  44. Mikejp Says:

It is surprising Dominik still has a job and I wondered why the Glazers hired him. The he has zero skill of leadership. Based on his selection criteria, he would miss Wirl and Tom Brady in great form because they are too shy or kind and would not correct the meal orders. He certainly missed Gronk because he talked so much. You always need different characters in your team, some one like Jordan and Gronk are critical for stress reliever when your team loses a game. Some one who are too kind to correct the order, so they are good examples for following the leader’s order when you have no time to debate.

  45. JN Says:

Doink! Can’t believe he admitted it. So would you not draft a guy if he was quiet? I get fitting in the locker room is big with culture and chemistry but come on. This is the same GM that loved drafting captains.

  46. Goatfarmer Says:

This is the same boob who paid Michael Clayhands a boatload in 2009. In 2010 Clayhands was on the Giants.

Dumbassnik is legendary for his magnificent boobery.

As mentioned above by Marine, he’s lucky for Matt Millen.

And Marine – the “build around number 5” thing has triggered my Turrett’s again. Aaaarrrrrrrggghhh.

  47. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Does Dominick have a job anywhere right now?

  48. 1#bucsfan Says:

He’s deff a good rusher but honestly glad we never drafted him. He does talk to much. So pumped we got the last laugh in 2020. They beat us twice but n the season n we beat them in the playoffs. I was smiling so big when that happened cause he was talking so much smack before the game

  49. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I’m sure the scout wasn’t too happy Dominik didn’t follow his advice. I bet that scout told his scout friends Cam was his choice and Dominik didn’t listen. I bet the smart scouts probably stayed away from Tampa. How do you not listen to your scout if your a GM. You’re literally paying this guy to tell you who to pick. Then you just decide. Ya know what? I’m not going to listen to the staff I pay to advise me. Because Cam Jordan talks to much and this other guy didn’t send his food back. What a joke!!! Might as well fire your whole scouting department and base your draft off of Mel Kiper’s list. Or toss a coin.

  50. garro Says:

And I should care about this because?

  51. Brandon Says:

Idiot move by an idiot GM. Jordan was bigger, faster, stronger, and more productive in college than Clayborn. He also had position versatility that Clayborn did not (RDE only). Then both accepted invites the Senior Bowl… Clayborn withdrew his and Jordan absolutely dominated. He destroyed everyone put in front of him in one-on-ones, practices, and games. And this dumb SOB take Clayborn, the Boy Dog, and lets a potential HOF candidate go because he talked too much? What a dunce.

  52. 80forBrady Says:

Maybe it was the stupid hat hes wearing in the picture
