Reunited With Baker Mayfield “A Big Deal” For Zac Robinson

January 28th, 2026

Bucs OC Zac Robinson.

Back in 2022, Liam Coen was Rams offensive coordinator.

Coen, along with Rams head coach Sean McVay and assistant quarterback coach Zac Robinson, were given the credit for rescuing Baker Mayfield’s career.

The former No. 1 overall pick was discarded by the Browns and he was left for roadkill by Matt Rhule and the Stinking Panthers.

(For some weird reason, Rhule couldn’t win with Christian McCaffrey, Sam Darnold, D.J. Moore and Mayfield. And folks wonder why Rhule can’t beat a ranked opponent at Nebraska.)

When the Bucs hired Coen to run their offense in 2024, Coen crowed how being able to work again with Mayfield was a major draw to Tampa.

Fast forward two years and the Bucs hired Robinson, who happens to be very tight with Coen. Joe had asked Robinson yesterday if Coen had to sell him on seeking the Bucs’ opening at offensive coordinator.

No, Robinson said, Coen didn’t sell him on the Bucs. He didn’t have to. Robinson wanted the job, largely because of Mayfield.

“Sure, it’s a big deal,” Robinson said. “We got Baker in 2022 [when] we had had some injuries at the quarterback spot. I’ve known of Baker for a long time. I went to Oklahoma State, he went to Oklahoma. … He’d dice us up every single time that they played.

“I had a ton of respect for him from afar as a player, and then, to be able to get him in there [with the Rams] and see just the type of worker he was.

“I’ll never forget, we gave him a handful of plays. It was a short week, Thursday night game, so we gave him kind of a menu of plays and Baker could probably tell you about 20-25 plays. It was like at 10 o’clock at night and he came in the next day and I saw his notebook – we had a bathroom break, [so] I saw his notebook – he had highlighters everywhere, color coded.

“Right away, I was like, ‘Okay, I know the player, I know the talent, but he’s made of all the right stuff.’”

Mayfield and Robinson developed a connection. Robinson also saw how Mayfield could lead a team of men, even if he barely knew them. That motivated Robinson to work again with Mayfield.

“Obviously, that time that we spent together was invaluable during a tough season [where] he came in and ignited that group,” Robinson said. “I’m fired up to work with ‘Bake’ and the rest of the guys.

“It’s a good group of dudes and I’m looking forward to it, for sure.”

Well, if Coen could come in and add juice to the offense and transform it into a top-four offense, why can’t Robinson? Robinson noted his offense will have a bunch of “carry-over” from what Coen did with the Bucs.

That energized Joe. That offense Coen built was fantastic. There’s no reason to believe Robinson can’t have similar success that Coen and Mayfield had in 2024.

Excellent one-on-one interview. Thank you for sharing it, Joe. Zac seems very, very excited to be here. A lot of history and he seems sincere about it all.

Baker bringing all the different highlighters, priceless and loving it! Baker is definitely an igniter.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

baker led the NFL in INTs and Fumbles under Liam….and we were 1 and done after another 4th quarter turnover by baker…

and that production, ” energized Joe”….lol….

figures lol…Joe, like others wanted the BUCS to extend JW after he throw 30INTs lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. darengibo Says:

Excited for the season. I can see Robinson thriving here as long Bucs stay relatively healthy!

  5. Truth be Told Says:

Our Offense should be just fine. Can he help at all on our pass defense? Lol it’s putrid.

  6. Bee Says:

“The offense should be fine” even though it struggled to score against teams with worse records and backup QBs. Lol….ok. And spare me the nonsense about the OL when it ranked 16th in time to throw, better than some playoff teams. But some yall dont like facts.

But hey, let’s stay “positive” and ignore the glaring weaknesses on the ENTIRE TEAM and focus on one side of the ball.

Can’t wait for Joe and other Bucs media to hit us with articles and videos talking about the Bucs “Superbowl Roster” lmao.

did anyone ask him what head coach job he wants after the offense has some decent stats and loses in the Wild Card round again?

  8. Gipper Says:

Munch, WarrenBrooksLoser, Oneiilbuc, MelvinJunior, Bee and the other girls know more about Mayfield than Zac Robinson. Heck, those girls know more about Mayfield than Mike Evans or Chris Godwin. What we know for sure is there are ZERO QB’s past or persent who can play behind 3rd string OG’s. Hope that Zak Robinson will have credible backups if the Oline gets beat up again in 2026.

  9. Steven007 Says:

813, it seems you’ve fallen into the rabbit hole after reading so much negativity about Baker for so long. If I remember correctly, this is a change for you. Seems like it will take a while for you to be convinced that we have a decent quarterback here. Hopefully next season will prove that. In the meantime, try to see the glass half full. At least occasionally.

  10. Bee Says:

3rd string OGs, 2nd string OL, blah blah blah……I thought yall loved stats? The Bucs OL at their WORST WAS MIDDLE OF THE LEAGUE in pass protection. It doesn’t matter what string they are, it’s how you perform. And when the QB has more time to throw than half the league that means he should be able to operate the offense effectively.

  11. OLDSCOOL1976 Says:

Having 8-10 teams looking for OC/HC and Todd as lame duck this is probably a better hire than they could have possibly expected. I believe that if the O line stays a bit healthier that Zac will be OK and fall somewhere between Coen and Caneles.

Hey, sweetie, we all saw the games on TV and through the miracle of Sunday NFL Ticket we can watch them again. Baker had to run for his life most of the season. Eventually, he got really banged up. Go back to playing with your dolls.

Reprinting my comments to Bee from a few days ago when the Bee buzzer went off on Mayfield not “winning” the Washington playoff game. See below.

    Bee,

Just keep commenting, you are cementing your idiocy. Mayfield in 2024 Washington playoff game had a rating of 146 15-18 passing for 2TD O INT. Washington dominated the clock. Pretty hard for any QB to “win” a game when he can’t even get on the field. This is typical of you bedwetters. You say endlessly stupid things hoping that you will fit in with Munch and his other girlfriends.

Talk is cheap because supply vastly exceeds demand. There is one ginormous obstacle, who is probably wolfing down a bag of cheeseburgers as this is being typed

Here’s a fact for you: It’s not 2025 anymore. The team won’t be the same next season as it was last season.

Some of the “glaring weaknesses” in 2025 have already been addressed. They launched an inexperienced coordinator and an awful special teams coach.
If you can’t acknowledge the positive changes than go root for the Saints.

  16. BakerFan Says:

Seems like everyone that knows Baker up close likes the total package, players, opponents, coaches etc.., but it is only the turds on this site who know nothing about him or football that project all the hate.

Who should we believe the day to day football guys or you turds? That’s right I said it, YOU TURDS.

  17. Wayne Kerr Says:

If Robinson schemes are offense to score 51 points a game
Bowles defense will give up 53 points a game

If only these Bowles femboys could be comfortable in their own skin and admitting they’re here they’re qu33r and they will not disappear

  18. Show Me the TDs Says:

I think Gipper is in love. Awww 🥰

  19. Bee Says:

    BFS1996

You dont know those weaknesses have been addressed. You’re guessing just like I am although my guesses are based off past consistent performance. The HC and QB have one playoff win in 3 years. If you like those results, thats fine, I dont and have higher standards. If you think a new OC and ST coach will equal a playoff run, then fine, thats glass half full thinking but I don’t see it making much difference since the leadership is the same.

My guess is this team tanks but we’ll see. I’m sure you probably said the 2024 team wasn’t like the 2025 team too…they were worse.

There’s a word for expecting different results from doing the same thing over and over….

  20. Saskbucs Says:

We will see. Only way Robinson has Coen magic is if Baker really is that much better than Penix and Cousins.

Otherwise Falcons would have been better and won the South.

Coen elevated Baker and clearly elevated Trevor Lawrence. Can Robinson lift his guys… I hope so.

  21. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Maybe after 8 years and >100 starts in the league, Mayfield will finally stop staring down WRs, locking in on his first read so that he doesn’t miss the open read, drop his eyes too fast, improve his spacial awareness which shortens pass pro time for his linemen regardless of what they’re slotted on the depth chart all because he and Zac Robinson spent a working together.

Mayfield himself likened himself to garbage, when he’s really just been recycled and repurposed.

Wanker is proving his handle is more creative than anything he has to say about football.

While Gipper is still proving he’s more Baker fan than Buc fan, that’s all this guy talks about. Matter of fact, Gipper who do you think we get to replace Greg Gaines, if you even know who he is

  22. RondeBarberTime Says:

Looks like copy and paste is working at JBF headquarters.

Guess we’re going all in on papering over the real issue with the Bucs.

This has been on repeat since Bowles was hired as HC\DC.

Two OC’s have been fired and two escaped from Todd’s inept scheme.

If Robinson has any success at all he’ll leave for a HC job elsewhere in 2027.

Bowles is the ultimate Manchurian candidate.

  23. MelvinJunior Says:

“ And folks wonder why Rhule can’t beat a ranked opponent at Nebraska.”

I was pretty shocked about them offering him THAT extension. I felt they really jumped the gun on it! I mean, so what if Penn State had swooped-in and stole him (though they still could’ve)!? Who cares… NEXT. It’s not like he was Nick Saban. Same at Kentucky with Coach STOOPID. These AD’s freaking panic over losing these mediocre head caches. It’s RIDICULOUS. Just SO Absurd. And, of course they immediately proceeded to TANK on the season from that point on. OF COURSE. It’s happens EVERY TIME. You can just book-it! Tom Osbourne gave him a big boost of confidence just the other day, but what else was he going to say!? They are now 💯 fully indebted to HIM. The entire state of Nebraska.

  24. MelvinJunior Says:

Oh yeah, I also meant to add… He also just lost his QB to go to Oregon and be their BACK UP. The little Mahomes wannabe. LoL. The dude really gets on my nerves. I can’t STAND watching him play. EVERYTHING he literally does is like Mahomes, down to the haircut, how he stands, moves, throws the ball, and EVERYTHING. It’s very odd.

    ———————————————————————————–

No, Bee, the leadership is NOT the same.

There are two new coordinators. If you can’t see that that is a change in leadership, I don’t believe I can help you.
