Rondé Barber Reacts To Mike Evans Departure
March 13th, 2026So what does a Buccaneers legend who speaks openly about how important it was for him to finish his storied career in Tampa think about Mike Evans bailing on Tampa Bay in favor of the 49ers?
Rondé Barber chimed in on that subject during his visit to the Jay Recher Podcast this week.
“I hate to see it. Because I wanted him to be one of those guys [with the Bucs his entire career],” Barber said
“My kind of take is, as long as Mike’s happy, I’m happy for him. Right? Mike made this decision. I know the Bucs would have loved to have him back and it’s not a money thing. It’s a ‘I want to try new opportunites’ type thing.
“…Mike definitely has a lot left in the tank, man. Like I think, we went from the beginning of the year — and I know this because I talked to Mike briefly — him thinking about retiring to him then getting hurt, realizing his love for the game is still there, he still has a lot to give and he’s not ready to walk away from the game. And that he’s not walking away but going to another place, it sucks for us as Bucs fans. But for Mike, it’s probably a good thing.
“… Let him live out his dream. If his dream is not here anymore, that’s fine. There’s never going to be a better offensive player in Bucs history than Mike Evans. I’m confident, in 50 years, people will look back and say Mike Evans is still the best offensive player in Bucs history. So, we’ll always have that. I wish him the best. And I don’t hate that he’s going to John Lynch’s team. Because I root for John; I just can’t help myself (laughs). And they need help at wide receiver, so they got it.
“And I think one more important thing, and I think even will even say this, he’s leaving our wide receiver room in good shape.”
Barber went on to name the key Bucs receivers and say, “They can probably get by without him. Baker might not say that, but I think the team is in pretty good shape [at receiver].”
Interesting hearing Barber say Evans’ fire to play was re-kindled after his injury in Detroit on Oct. 20. Two weeks later, the Bucs were enjoying their bye week with a 6-2 record following wins over the Seahawks and 49ers.
That might have been another good time for the Bucs to remind Evans they believe in him and to offer him a one-year contract extension.

March 13th, 2026 at 6:37 pm
I’m guessing Evans is going to ball out this year. All you have to do is feed him consistently.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:38 pm
Great analysis by Barber. Well done, sir.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:39 pm
“I am not that man” – Mike Evans
March 13th, 2026 at 6:45 pm
I don’t care that he left, I think he is injury prone and does have not much left in the tank. No disrespect, just father time always wins. Not happy about his comments, but he is free to say whatever he wants. He should be thanking the Bucs and Baker for getting him 1000 yards and a $3M payday. Instead he threw Baker under the bus. lol. Evans cant play all 17 games next season, his hammy will still be a problem in SF.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:46 pm
Eloquent response, albeit an overly safe one. That’s fine, Ronde also has that forever status of his own for the greatest play in team history.
Unrelated news, Tennessee released Sneed today. No idea how his rehab is coming, but might be worth having him pay a visit.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:48 pm
Buc4. He didn’t throw Baker under the bus Baker threw himself under the bus by throwing late 4th quarter picks losing games or keeping other teams in games. Baker Mayfield is has shown that he’s not a franchise quarterback or less he gets to the NFC Championship the bucs need to move on from him and Bowles.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:56 pm
Rondé is not going to begrudge Mike for leaving, nor is he gonna badmouth the team who supports WFLA preseason telecasts, nor the team who permits his input on their official website and grants him access few others are given.
So he did the right thing. Sometimes the best slant is no slant.
Rondé leaves the bad seed planting from the Barber family on the green thumbs of Tiki.
Although it did come across that he and Mike were not close, so be it. Can’t be friends with everybody.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:58 pm
Mike Evans and Doug Williams should have been Bucs for life.
March 13th, 2026 at 6:59 pm
Stop with all the Evans whining. The guy bailed on us. He gave up on us. Stop wasting our time with him. He plays for the 49er’s.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:00 pm
¿Wait a minute, are we inquiring about trading for Anthony Richardson?
March 13th, 2026 at 7:01 pm
Nice comments. Let’s move on now.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:03 pm
Very diplomatic answer from Ronde.
It’ll be interesting to listen to the entire interview to see if he chides the front office for their missteps re: Mike over the past couple of years. He was critical of Todd Bowles a couple of times on his TV show.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:10 pm
Mike thinks those annual hammys can tie Jerry’s other record. Good luck with that
March 13th, 2026 at 7:11 pm
Let the Niners deal with the hamstring.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:15 pm
I may be in the minority as a Bucs fan, but I agree with every word that Ronde said, including rooting for John Lynch. Lynch is not only a Hall-of-Fame player, but a Hall-of-Fame human being as well. I’ll never forget when he came to Tampa General to visit children there, including the 10-year-old child of a friend of mine who was in there with kidney failure. It made a huge impression.
Evans has helped the Bucs win a Championship and has been big in helping the community as well. In no way is he a “traitor”. Nor do I agree that he threw Baker under the bus. He did not say or imply that. He wanted to join a team with a good QB AND a strong chance of winning a Super Bowl, and the Bucs have to rebuild their defense to be a real contender, which might take a couple of seasons. If he threw anyone under the bus, it was Bowles IMO.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:16 pm
I would’ve loved to have Mike stay but if he can’t stay healthy it’s not gonna help if he keeps turning into IHOP every year now.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:25 pm
He’s a enemy now old news ! I pray for a playoff game against the miners just to prove he mad the terrible choice
March 13th, 2026 at 7:26 pm
I’m not too bummed about him leaving would have been cool for him
To be a buc for life that rarely happens in sports these days
March 13th, 2026 at 7:27 pm
Just glad LVD wants to be a Buc for
Life like DB55
March 13th, 2026 at 7:29 pm
I think Ronde was genuine in his comments. He was graceful in saying hey Mike wanted to live the final chapter of his dream with another team. He is not going to bite the hand that feeds him and throw the Organization under the bus. However, we as fans were frustrated last year and apparently so was Mike. We can and should throw the Organization under the bus, because, yes they caused the whole thing!!!
The difference with Mike, he could take action on what he saw as a team and Organization now going the wrong way. As fans all we can do is quit supporting a team making bad decisions . Presently that is what I am considering .
Remember Mike lived in the lost decade and obviously did not want to experience that again.
Ronde of course is going to be happy for his friend Lynch. I mean Mike wanted to leave and the 49ers got a Hall Of Fame player. Ronde also said he hated to see him go. I mean what else can the guy say.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:29 pm
Mike Evans stayed a Buc a lot longer than most would have given how much individual success he had in spite of the terrible team. he could have possibly won a Super Bowl some where else. He doesn’t owe the Bucs or fans any more with this team wasting away the talent left on the roster. He just doesn’t believe in what Toilet is selling and most of us don’t either. But, consistently whining about Mike or Toilet isn’t going to change anything. Get over it.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:39 pm
Hard to disagree with anything he said.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:45 pm
He’s gone. He belongs to the 49ers. End of story. Time to move on.
March 13th, 2026 at 7:47 pm
Insane reading some of these posts calling Mike a traitor and almost hoping he fails with the 49’ers. The guy gave the Bucs his best years and likely only has one, maybe two years left at a high level with his size and the hamstring issues he’s delt with. He’ll probably retire as a Buccaneer on a one day contract and go into the HoF as a Buccaneer, so why all the butt-hurt attitudes towards a guy who earned the opportunity to pick the spot he felt gives him the best opportunity to add to his NFL legacy? Personally I agree verbatim with what Ronde said. Only time I’ll root for Mike to have an off day is if he plays the Bucs (though I imagine he’ll have over 150 yards and 2 TD’s against Bowles’ pass defense).
March 13th, 2026 at 8:00 pm
Ive been a Buc fan my entire life. 51 and my dad took me to my first game in 78. Been going to games since then and Mike is one of my all time favorite Bucs . He was amazing on the field and a great dude off the field.
BUT my WORD!!! Let it go Joe!!
Guy was on his last legs, or hammies…he might have 1 more good season left in him, but not much else. The Bucs have a very good WR room and tried to keep Mike, but things worked out the way they did and he’s gone.
I like Lynch, Evans and think they were both great Bucs that gave me lots of fun days watching the Bucs..but I hope the 49ers suck, Evans limps off the field after every catch.
Thanks for the memories, but bye bye.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:04 pm
Oh Good. Another Evans waste of time.
Joe is always going to write about what Joe finds interesting regardless of complaints or cheers. It’s really very easy not to read something. –Joe
March 13th, 2026 at 8:07 pm
In the end, it just came down to him being a good player on a team that doesn’t stand a chance in hell of making the playoffs with the coach they have now, or going to a team that could possibly make the playoffs in the toughest division in football.
This would probably not even be a conversation if Bowles’s worthless @ss had been fired.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:07 pm
There are a few things that no decent fan should let go.
3rd and 28
Losing Mike to another team for less money
Retaining Todd Bowles
The more articles on the travesty of these topics the better.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:22 pm
Good grief folks. The man brought a Super Bowl home, stayed and carried the team when all he had was bum QB’s. Took every new young receiver under his wing and helped with any and everything they needed and did even more than all that in the community! Let him try something new for HIM for a change, because he’s put everyone else before him and always carried himself like a professional. For a position around the league that pound for pound has the biggest turds playing that position he never ever was anything like that! Yes, we all wanted him to finish out being a Buc, but he’s earned the right to go do something for himself for a change. I hope it works out for him as well as it did for Brady leaving the Pats. Given the chance, every organization would love to have drafted and grown a great person and player, and we got lucky enough to watch since a rookie. Good luck to man, he’s earned it!!
March 13th, 2026 at 8:22 pm
I think both Evans and Barber recognize it’s amateur hour with Todd Bowles as coach. Probably Rashad White too, hell maybe even Bucky.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:28 pm
I’m sry to see him leave I truly respected him in the community and on the field for his integrity. However it’s getting old talking about him continuously.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:35 pm

Oh Good. Another Evans waste of time.

Thank you Joe! All he does is troll
Brings nothing but a elementary conversation to a grown man discussion
March 13th, 2026 at 8:35 pm
Shorter version: Mike is Andy and we are in Woody’s dream. “I don’t want to play with you anymore” (drop)
March 13th, 2026 at 8:39 pm
What strikes me is the difference in the Mike who appears in videos of the past and the Mike quoted from the latest videos. The attitude seems so different. I wonder whether he was coached by an agent of someone else to say the new stuff. The old Mike seemed to speak as an individual, from the heart. The new Mike is like a self-serving Bot spouting banalities like, “I want to win a Super Bowl’ that no one can disagree with as motivation but that, in reality, cannot be assured by any team in the parity-mad NFL.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:45 pm
Mike saw what the rest of us saw. The second half of the season—especially from the defense—was a total lack of effort at times. Honestly, it was hard to watch. How the head coach and much of that defensive staff are still in place is beyond me. Call it scheme, lack of effort, or plain incompetence—it doesn’t really matter. Mike saw it, and he decided he was done.
And honestly, I don’t blame him.
What I do want to say is thank you. Thank you for 12 years of effort, professionalism, and incredible play. It was an absolute pleasure watching you compete every week and eventually tie Jerry Rice’s record.
One of my favorite moments as a fan was the end of that Saints game when you broke the record. The energy in that moment was electric—honestly about as close as it gets to a Super Bowl feeling without actually winning one.
Thanks for everything, Mike. Wishing you another Super Bowl before you hang it up. Warm Regards Curtiss O
March 13th, 2026 at 8:51 pm
Mike Evans was drafted by this Buccaneer organization, they have paid him well and looked at him as a true Buccaneer. He’s won a Super Bowl here. Mike Evans has decided to turn his back on the people, organization that made him and has been loyal to them. I honestly think in my mind this has tarnished his reputation here in Buc land. As a Buc fan since 1976, this doesn’t sit well with me.
March 13th, 2026 at 8:54 pm
You can tell who the Buc fans are, we think it is time to turn the page and perhaps note in passing that Mike may not be happy when he finds out that he is not only 3rd fiddle to Kittle and GMac but also will be a decoy so that other WRs like Persall will get some looks and that is if Mike can stay on the field.
The fact that he did not personally thank Tampa fans and Buc nation out the door says enough. Turn the page, In a 5 to 10 years or so he will go in The Ring of Honor and that is that, wear your jersey then but time to stow it in the attic.
The trolls, Buc haters and Evans (Not Tampa) fans are the only ones who come and post how great Mike will be in Sf, the rest of us just want to move on. This is Stamkos all over again, though Stamkos was a bit more gracious in his exit.
March 13th, 2026 at 9:04 pm
Dude wants to win
He was the only one pissed when they lost
March 13th, 2026 at 9:14 pm
ME left because Baker sucks
March 13th, 2026 at 9:18 pm
IMO..the last time the Bucs were really a TEAM was with Tom Brady..I think Mike was waiting for something to start to gel again but that has just not happened..I will be with others and root for some miracle to happen with the Bucs but also wish Mike the very best..love him..John Lynch who are both gave their hearts and souls to the Buccaneers and the community and their fans for their time here.
March 13th, 2026 at 9:23 pm
If I’m Baker Mayfield I take noticed of Evens presser where he said he wants to play with a good QB. Sounds like a slap in the face to Mayfield.
I’ll take Mayfield over Purdy all day, every day.
March 13th, 2026 at 9:26 pm
Ronde’s a class guy.
March 13th, 2026 at 9:47 pm
Karen fans hurt feelings because he didn’t thank them like they paid his bills or was there for his family. The Bucsc have dumped several of our greats near the end of their careers, so why so upset about him leaving to go to a better franchise??? Between team B & B he sees no chance at making another Super Bowl before he retires. He’ll always be a Buc just like John Lynch will be. You remember how the Bucs cut him too right?
March 13th, 2026 at 9:48 pm
Can we move on????
The Mike Evans era is over.
Start writing about how Baker Mayfield will be able to step up and lead.
Or about the need to Fire Bowles now!
March 13th, 2026 at 9:51 pm
How does this not piss off Bucs fans that Evans turned his back on his team, his teammates? Apparently it’s all about Mike and not his family he’s been with for 12 years. I don’t know about you but I see this as short sighted and incredibly detrimental to his reputation. At least detrimental in Tampa, I’d make him wait along, long time to get in the ring of honor.
March 13th, 2026 at 10:03 pm
On the other hand maybe it was Todd Bowles being brought back that chased him away.
March 13th, 2026 at 10:08 pm
Can this be the last post about Mike?
Ronde is right. Watch the presser yourself, says clearly why he left, and no it’s not Baker’s fault you haters: 1) Offensive play calls (coaching), 2) They won DESPITE INJURIES (aka coaching), and 3) Organizational culture (in it to win – period). You can’t blame him for that. He gave the Bucs a chance.
In all fairness, all the other stuff some are gigging him for, or making conspiracies about, is noise. Of course, if he didn’t believe in Bowles or yet another OC, he would be looking for a good QB, nice environment (fan base), etc. Quit making more of that than what it is.
March 13th, 2026 at 10:35 pm
3rd & 28 was the last straw.
March 13th, 2026 at 11:00 pm
Take a knee somewhere else Mike . Haven’t forgiven you for that . Never will .
March 13th, 2026 at 11:09 pm
49ers better ad add another receiver. We have 3 more enviable, with strong hamstrings.
If they don’t just double old Mike, we know what that does.
Btw Egbuka disappeared only because he started getting doubled while Jalen was still out and then when Mike came back he became WR3 or 4 on some plays
March 13th, 2026 at 11:20 pm
Absolutely not! This is a business. No way Joe’s going to pretend the franchise’s greatest offensive player drafted doesn’t exist.
March 13th, 2026 at 11:28 pm
Just pouring salt in the wound at this point. It’s better than nothing. It’s a Bucs life.
March 13th, 2026 at 11:47 pm
WHATS SUPER FUN
1. Next year is set up.
Tons of young studs, solid OL, $100m cap.
2. Bowles is gone.
Enough said.
3. Tomlin is available
19 years. Never a losing season.
March 14th, 2026 at 12:01 am
Happy to see Evans go cant pay a WR 2 big time money for 3 years. If I wanted to read articles about a 49er I’d go to Joe the 49ers fan site. Can we cover the Bucs? I personally don’t care about the 49ers tired of seeing content about them.
Very good things happening adding pass rusher and depth plenty of content about our favorite team.
March 14th, 2026 at 12:07 am
One thing’s for sure, we don’t have ME 13 next season but we still have a very highly talented receiver room. Bucs need Godwin, McMillan and Egbuka to step up. Also I have really high hopes for the little guy, Tez Johnson to continue flashing!!
I can’t think of a better leader for our Bucs than Baker Mayfield. What an incredible fighter he is.
Next years schedule is another tough one sports fans, if we win ten games that’s a huge accomplishment!!
Go Bucs !!
March 14th, 2026 at 12:13 am
Thanks for the great 12 years Mike. I’m sad but can’t blame you for wanting to chase another ring. With all the injuries the 49ers had and as far as they went in 2025, would not be surprised to see them while it win it all this year.
March 14th, 2026 at 1:12 am
Nobody is saying he doesn’t exist, Joe. Obviously. Just that they, like many of us, are tired of seeing article after article about a wide receiver on another team on our favorite Bucs website. Yes, I know, I’ve read your replies already, you write about what you want, yada yada. And I’m free to pass on the article, etc. That’s not the point. And I’ve already seen that you have another one waiting in the wings. Fantastic.
March 14th, 2026 at 1:42 am
Ronde knows why Mike bolted. I wish he’d say it. Someone needs to.
Atrocities like this can not be forgotten or forgiven.
March 14th, 2026 at 2:17 am
We suck
March 14th, 2026 at 3:11 am
The “highly talented “ receiving corps features zero #1 receivers, one#2, a tired legs #3 and an inconsistent #3 who gets too emotional. And a midget whose best use would be as the projectile Vita hurls over opponents’ centers to get a sack. Woo hoo.
Mikey’s departure is the wound that will never heal.
March 14th, 2026 at 4:00 am
Mike wanted to move on. For what he’s done for the franchise, including a SB and a HOF career – he’s more than earned that right.
We know you read these messages at times Mike. We wish you the best, even if you’re no longer playing for the Bucs.
March 14th, 2026 at 8:18 am
Whining about Evans stories? Easy. Scroll on. It’s literally the most consequential thing that’s happened to this team this offseason. FA has, overall, been a giant nothing burger and you can only write so many articles on signing a backup 3rd down back, old DL and LB who haven’t done much and a backup QB.
That leaves you with the Evans story and how not firing Bowles when they should have cost them their face of the franchise.
March 14th, 2026 at 8:21 am
Oh Good. Another Evans waste of time.
Joe is always going to write about what Joe finds interesting regardless of complaints or cheers. It’s really very easy not to read something. –Joe

Thank you Joe. The dude is an idiot. Not only did he choose to take the time to read it. But he took the time to add his negative attitude post. Can you imagine being around someone who is so constantly negative all the friggin time? Dude must have no friends, no wife and his family avoids him like the plague.
March 14th, 2026 at 8:51 am
Yeah, be careful with the obsessive behavior. Not healthy – it’s what drives stalkers, school shooters, serial killlers, and wife beaters.
The Falcons Pierce is a good example. A POS that went after his girlfriend because she didn’t want him any more. No surprise there. But he wouldn’t let her go and kept going after her. Obsessive. So next stop – pokey!
Time to move on and have some optimism for 2026. Getting bigger up the middle on Defense is just what we needed. Too many small and slow guys getting run over last season.
Personally hope we get some bigger safetys. Few defensive coordinators are going to look good with who we lined up with last year. That’s the truth.
March 14th, 2026 at 9:21 am
Best of luck to him, he put up with us for so long he deserves to go to wherever he desired. Just wish I would have expected it sooner! We need to get a better pass rush and like Ronde Barber said im glad he thinks our wide receiver room is in good hands.
March 14th, 2026 at 10:06 am
Tough business
Sounds like something mike tomlin would say
March 14th, 2026 at 10:35 am
Moving on is what sheep do as they’re being led into the slaughterhouse.
Can’t forgive or forget. Can’t have too many articles about Mike, about his 3rd and 28 reaction, and about his relationship with his ex head coach (who should be the Bucs ex head coach).
March 14th, 2026 at 12:36 pm
Jmac is going to be a stud this year. They’ll be in pass mode constantly thats for sure.
March 14th, 2026 at 3:11 pm
I can’t understand all this “Bucs-For-Life” obsession. I mean, WHY!? Who Cares!? Especially, as an ADULT. And, in the modern day of free-agency, and the access to information. It has made ZERO difference to ME, ever since Joe Montana left the 49ers for the Chiefs. I was probably like, ‘SIXTEEN’ YEARS-OLD, at the time LoL. That was when “I” figured-it out, that it was A ‘BUSINESS’ and that the ‘players’ are nothing but EMPLOYEES. They can be CUT or TRADED literally, at ANY TIME. Those FO’s and Owners will DROP THEM in the blink of an EYE. With ZERO amount of ‘give a damn’ or shame. I mean, it is so ridiculous for YOU to give a damn, whatsoever.
Some of these people live in some kind of WEIRD adult “fantasyland” inside of their own heads. It’s VERY odd to give AF what Mike does, or any other ‘Professional’ ATHLETE. You have to have an empty life to care THAT MUCH. It is a GAME. Only for OUR Entertainment. Some of these people hang-onto, and take EVERY single word these ‘professional’ athletes say, as being LITERAL. I mean, come on. So, what else was MIKE supposed to say, “I’m excited to be playing for a ‘historical’ franchise with a great team, FO, coaching staff, and QB… Even, though, the city of San Francisco SUCKS, and is a literal HELL-HOLE, full of homelessness, crime, and feces – Though, I have heard that the new mayor is doing a much better job at trying to clean-it up now, finally!” LoL GTFO.
And, he never “insulted” Baker. Even, though, HE had definitely earned that right to do so, had HE wanted. Let’s be REAL… You people would not care if HE had insulted ANY other QB. If it had been Kyle Trask, or anyone else, you all would freaking PRAISE HIM for it! So, GTFO about that, too! Grow up. LIVE in reality. Go outside. Touch some grass. Do SOMETHING. Anything. It would help. LoL.
I think a lot of these people are just very old, and have very little else, to worry about or do. They just ‘romanticize’ about how it was back when they were ‘KIDS’ before free-agency. Back when players made very little money, had to have summer jobs, and stayed and lived in just ‘one’ city for all throughout their entire careers. It is NOT the ‘reality’ now, and they have yet, to figure that out. Lmao. I started to ‘realize-it’ somewhere between the time, after Rex Chapman had left Kentucky, and Joe Montana the 49ers. When I was 11 to 16 years-old. They are ATHLETES, people. Freaking EMPLOYEES. They have THEIR OWN lives to live, and their own FAMILIES and FRIENDS to take care of. Their careers and peak earning years are unbelievably SHORT. They have THEIR OWN egos, and GOALS to accomplish. While, having only a very “limited’ amount of time to do it in. And, they are only one-injury, or bad decision away, from it ALL coming to an end. It is what it is. And, Mike gave ALL HE HAD here. EVERY. Single. Freaking. OUNCE of it.
March 14th, 2026 at 3:18 pm
Seriously. It doesn’t matter, in the LEAST. I mean, WHY would anyone want an aging, older player, who is obviously on the decline, to just stick around for only in the name of being a “BUC-FOR-LIFE!?” It makes NO sense. And, WHY would anyone take it, OR anything THEY SAY as being a ‘personal’ shot towards THEM? It’s Absurd.
March 15th, 2026 at 3:26 am
It matters. Hall of Famer, or an anonymous lousy coach who will be forgotten long before the Bucs ever make the playoffs again thanks to his ruinous methods and refusal to adjust.
Never forget. Can’t forgive.
March 15th, 2026 at 4:58 pm
Does anyone notice that Baker has been VERY QUIET since the end of the season? Except for complaining about the Atlanta coach.
March 16th, 2026 at 6:36 am
Some of these comments are as unhinged as the fanbase that thinks Todd does a good job.
